The links between large-scale silicic volcanism and plutonism offer insights into the dynamics of crustal magmatic systems and growth of continental crust. In Hong Kong, voluminous silicic ignimbrites and linked plutons record a ~26 Myr period of magmatism from ~164 to 138 Ma. We present data from these linked volcanic-plutonic assemblages at the Lantau and High Island caldera complexes, with an emphasis on the ~143–138 Ma activity from the latter. To track the evolution of these magmatic systems, U-Pb dating and trace element analyses using secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) were carried out on zircons from 21 samples from both volcanic and plutonic samples. The SIMS age data sets divide into two groups across volcanic and plutonic origins: (1) seven samples with unimodal age spectra [five of which have the same mean value as the published Isotope Dilution Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ID-TIMS) age from the same sample]; and (2) 14 samples yielding multiple age components. Age patterns from both groups suggest that the previously separated ~143 Ma Repulse Bay (RBVG) and ~141–140 Ma Kau Sai Chau volcanic groups (KSCVG) instead represent activities over a single ~5 Myr period. Direct linkages previously proposed between some volcanic and plutonic units for this period (e.g., High Island Tuff, Kowloon Granite) are no longer supported, and magmatism represented by exposed plutons continued until 137.8 ± 0.8 Ma (Mount Butler Granite). Under CL imagery, a wide range of zircon textures identified in both volcanic and plutonic samples is indicative of complex processes, some of which are identified through trace element data coupled with textural characteristics. Overall, intra-grain (cores vs. rims; sector-zonation) and intra-sample variations in trace element abundances and ratios are larger than those between samples. Zircon chemistries in both volcanic and plutonic samples fall into two groups during the ~5 Myr history of the High Island caldera magmatic system. One group (RBVG and “cold” granites) includes inherited grains back to 164 Ma and wider ranges in Hf, Y, total trivalent elements, Th and U concentrations and Th/U, Yb/Gd, and U/Yb ratios than the other (KSCVG and “hot” granites). Two possible evolutionary models of the High Island caldera magmatic system are: (1) the system randomly tapped a single crustal domain that fluctuated in temperature as a result of varying interactions of hotter melts, or (2) the volcanic and plutonic records reflect the interplay of two crustal domains with contrasting “low-” and “high-temperature” characteristics. In Hong Kong, some plutonic bodies were comagmatic with large-scale volcanism, while others were emplaced at shallow crustal levels independently of volcanism, matching the current two end-member views of the volcanic-plutonic relationship.

Abstract:The Tula A2‐subtype granite pluton is located between the Altun fault and its branching fault. According to the geological, geochemical, REE and trace elements characteristics, it belongs to the A2(PA) subtype granite. The SHRIMP U‐Pb zircon dating gives a result of 385.2±8.1 Ma, which is located between the Middle and Late Devonian in the international stratigraphic chart, and can be regarded as the crystallization age of the Tula granite. The study indicates that the Tula area was in a local extensional environment in the end of the Middle Devonian, and that environment was probably related to the synchronized strike‐slip activity of the Altun fault.

Abstract Two types of granitic intrusives occur in the lower Paleozoic strata in north Qilian. One is the hornblende‐bearing granitic body in Jingzichuan, characterized by the REE total of 90×10−6106×10−6, LREE/HREE ratio of less than 8 (ranging from 6.9 to 7.8) and zircon SHRIMP age of 464 Ma. These intrusives have island‐arc affinity. The other is biotite‐bearing granitic body in Huangyanghe with the REE total of 214×10−6250×10−6, LREE/HREE ratio of more than 8 (ranging from 8.2 to 9.7) and zircon LA‐ICP‐MS age of 383 Ma. They were tectonically intruded in a post‐coilisional or within‐plate environment.

Zircon and monazite U-Pb geochronology of rocks in the western Mojave province of the southwest US reveals that the Proterozoic arc exposed there shares an intrusive and deformational history with rocks exposed further east in the Yavapai and Mazatzal belts after approximately 1780 Ma. Consequently, it seems likely that the Mojave province was contiguous with these other Laurentian provinces by that time. Isotopic and geochronologic data also suggest that Mojave province plutonic rocks inherit their distinctive isotopic compositions, at least in part, from an enriched lithospheric mantle source and interaction with sedimentary rocks containing Archean detritus.

•Geochemically anomalous arc-derived detrital zircon are Middle-Late Jurassic in age.•Jurassic rifting mobilized deep magmas that typically do not reach the upper crust.•Most REE-rich zircon record magmatic differentiation prior to hornblende saturation.•Some REE-rich zircon record resorption of hornblende during depressurization.•Niobium and scandium contents are useful fractionation and assimilation indices.

Alkalic and tholeiitic basalts were erupted in the central Arizona Transition Zone during Miocene-Pliocene time before and after regional faulting. The alkalic lava types differ from the subalkaline lavas in Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic ratios and trace element ratios and, despite close temporal and spatial relationships, the two types appear to be from discrete mantle sources. Pre-faulting lava types include: potassic trachybasalts (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7052 to 0.7055, ?Nd= -9.2 to -10.7); alkali olivine basalts (87Sr/ 86Sr = 0.7049 to 0.7054, ?Nd= -2 to 0.2); basanite and hawaiites (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7049 to 0.7053, ?Nd= -3.5 to -7.8); and quartz tholeiites (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7047, ?Nd= -1.4 to -2.6). Post-faulting lavas have lower 87Sr/86Sr (<0.7045) and ?Nd from -3.2 to 2.3. Pb isotopic data for both preand post-faulting lavas form coherent clusters by magma type with values higher than those associated with MORB but within the range of values found for crustal rocks and sulfide ores in Arizona and New Mexico. Pb isotopic systematics appear to be dominated by crustal contamination. Effects of assimilation and fractional crystallization are inadequate to produce the Sr isotopic variations unless very large amounts of assimilation occurred relative to fractionation. It is impossible to produce the Nd isotopic variations unless ancient very unradiogenic material exists beneath the region. Moreover the assumption that the alkalic lavas are cogenetic requires high degrees of fractionation inconsistent with major- and trace-element data. Metasomatism of the subcontinental lithosphere above a subduction zone by a slab-derived fluid enriched in Sr, Ba, P and K could have produced the isotopic and elemental patterns. The degree of metasomatism apparently decreased upward, with the alkalic lavas sampling more modified regions of the mantle than the tholeiitic lavas. Such metasomatism may have been a regional event associated with crustal formation at about 1.6 Ga. Disruption and weakening of the subcontinental lithosphere in the Transition Zone of the Colorado Plateau by volcanism probably made deformation possible.

Late Jurassic dioritic plutons from the Bristol Lake region of the eastern Mojave Desert share several geochemical attributes with high-alumina basalts, continental hawaiite basalts, and high-K are andesites including: high K2O concentrations; high Al2O3 (16–19 weight %); elevated Zr/TiO2; LREE (light-rare-earth-element) enrichment (La/YbCN=6.3–13.3); and high Nb. Pearce element ratio analysis supported by petrographic relations demonstrates that P, Hf, and Zr were conserved during differentiation. Abundances of conserved elements suggest that dioritic plutons from neighboring ranges were derived from similar parental melts. In the most voluminous suite, correlated variations in elemental concentrations and (87Sr/86Sr)i indicate differentiation by fractional crystallization of hornblende and plagioclase combined with assimilation of a component characterized by abundant radiogenic Sr. Levenberg-Marquardt and Monte Carlo techniques were used to obtain optimal solutions to non-linear inverse models for fractional crystallization-assimilation processes. Results show that the assimilated material was chemically analogous to lower crustal mafic granulites and that the mass ratio of contaminant to parental magma was on the order of 0.1. Lack of enrichment in 18O with differentiation is consistent with the model results. Elemental concentrations and O, Sr, and Nd isotopic data point to a hydrous REE-enriched subcontinental lithospheric source similar to that which produced some Cenozoic continental hawaiites from the southern Cordillera. Isotopic compositions of associated granitoids suggest that partial melting of this subcontinental lithosphere may have been an important process in the development of the Late Jurassic plutonic arc of the eastern Mojave Desert.

Southern California and adjacent areas contain two suspect or exotic terranes comprised largely of ancient continental crust, namely the Tujunga (San Gabriel) and Joshua Tree terranes, that have been considered part of a larger displaced terrane, the Santa Lucia-Orocopia allochthon. Paleomagnetic data for the allochthon indicate northward transport in excess of 2000 km and, thus, an origin extraneous to North America. However, Early Proterozoic plutons of the Mojave crustal block and the Joshua Tree and Tujunga terranes have strikingly comparable features, including: (1) crystallization ages of 1.63 to 1.68 Ga; (2) biotite + sphene + magnetite $$\pm$$hornblende $$\pm$$garnet mineralogy; (3) high LIL and enriched HFS elemental composition; (4) WPG (within-plate granite) trace element chemistry; (5) similar and unique oxygen isotopic compositions; and (6) distinct Pb and Nd isotopic signatures. These features of the Mojave block, which clearly originated as part of native North America, nevertheless distinguish it from crust elsewhere in North America. On the basis of data presented here, we conclude that the Tujunga terrane is a disrupted portion of the Mojave crustal block and is neither far-traveled nor exotic to North America. Its apparent "exotic" nature stems from derivation out of the middle crust. We also conclude that the Joshua Tree terrane is correlative to the Mojave block. We have found no significant evidence for its displacement and consider Joshua Tree to be contiguous with the Mojave block and thus not a valid terrane. The Tujunga (San Gabriel) and Joshua Tree terranes should not be considered as part of, or having shared the same transport as, the Santa Lucia-Orocopia allocthon.

Major and trace-element whole rock data, Nd and Sr isotopic data, and microprobe data have been collected from a suite of basanites, olivine nephelinites, and olivine melilite nephelinites from the Raton-Clayton volcanic field, New Mexico. Most of the lavas have geochemical characteristics that suggest they are primary upper mantle derived melts. The previously unreported occurrence of Type I and Type II ultramafic xenoliths in some of the lava flows supports this conclusion. All the lavas are strongly enriched in light REE, Sr, Ba, U, Th, and P2O5. 87Sr/86Sr ratios are 0.70394 to 0.70412 and 143Nd/144Nd ratios are equal to an epsilon value of +1.4; the data fall within the Nd-Sr correlation field. Trace-element modeling indicates that the lavas were last in equilibrium with a light-REE enriched mantle with a (La/Yb)N of two to nine. However, the Nd isotopic data indicate a source with a time integrated, chondritic normalized, Sm/Nd ratio of 1.01. To account for this discrepancy a metasomatic enrichment of the source is proposed. The timing of the enrichment event can only be constrained to less than 1 AE ago, and the isotopic composition of the premetasomatized source and the metasomatizing agent cannot be specified. However, geochemical constraints suggest a CO2-rich fluid enriched in incompatible elements as the likely metasomatizing agent
