The thermal properties of carbon nanofibers (CNF)/epoxy composites, composed of tetraglycidyl‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) resin and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) as a curing agent, were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. DSC results showed that the presence of CNF had no pronounced influence on the heat of the cure reaction. However, the incorporation of CNF slightly improved the thermal stability of the epoxy. Furthermore, the storage modulus of the TGDDM/DDS epoxy was significantly enhanced, whereas the glass‐transition temperature was not significantly affected, upon the incorporation of CNFs. The storage modulus of 5 wt % CNF/epoxy composites at 25°C was increased by 35% in comparison with that of the pure epoxy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 100: 295–298, 2006

Biodegradable poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)–poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate]–poly (tert‐butyl acrylate) triblock copolymers based on bacterial poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The chain architectures of the triblock copolymers were confirmed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. Gel permeation chromatography analysis was used to estimate the molecular weight characteristics and lengths of the PHB and poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) blocks of the copolymers. The thermal properties of the copolymers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). TGA showed that the triblock copolymers underwent stepwise thermal degradation and had better thermal stability than their respective homopolymers, whereas DSC analyses showed that a microphase‐separation structure was formed only in the triblock copolymers with the longer PHB block. As a similar result, from wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction experimentation, the crystalline phase of PHB could not be seen evidently in the triblock copolymers with the shorter PHB block. The enzymatic hydrolysis of the copolymer films was carried at 37 °C and pH 7.4 in a potassium phosphate buffer with an extracellular PHB depolymerase from Penicillum sp. An investigation was carried out into the cure kinetics of carbon nanofibers (CNF)/epoxy composites, composed of tetraglycidyl‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) resin and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) as a curing agent. The experimental data for both neat system and CNF/epoxy composites revealed an autocatalytic behavior. Analysis of DSC data indicated that the presence of carbon nanofibers had only a negligible effect on the cure kinetics of the epoxy. Kinetic analysis was performed using the phenomenological model of Kamal and two diffusion factors were introduced to describe the cure reaction in the latter stage. Activation energies and kinetic parameters were determined by fitting experimental data. Comparison between the two diffusion factors was performed, showing that the modified factor was successfully applied to the experimental data over the whole curing temperature range. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The electrical‐resistivity/temperature behaviors of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE)/carbon black (CB) composites irradiated with 60Co γ rays were studied. The experimental results showed that the irradiated composites could be separated into insoluble crosslinking networks with CB (gel) and soluble components (sol) by solvent‐extraction techniques. When the sol of an irradiated LDPE/CB composite was extracted, the electrical conductivity of the system increased. The positive‐temperature‐coefficient (PTC) and negative‐temperature‐coefficient (NTC) intensities of the gels of the irradiated composites became extremely small and independent of the radiation dose. The sols and gels of the irradiated LDPE/CB composites, which had different thermal behaviors, played important roles in the appearances of the PTC and NTC effects. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The cure kinetics of tetraglycidyl‐4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) and 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) as a cure agent in nanocomposites with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been studied with an isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. The experimental data for both the neat TGDDM/DDS system and for epoxy/MWNTs nanocomposites showed an autocatalytic behavior. Kinetic analysis was performed with the phenomenological model of Kamal and a diffusion control function was introduced to describe the cure reaction in the later stage. Activation energies and kinetic parameters were determined by fitting experimental data. For MWNTs/epoxy nanocomposites, the initial reaction rates increased and the time to the maximum rate decreased with increasing MWNTs contents because of the acceleration effect of MWNTs. The values of the activation energies for the epoxy/MWNTs nanocomposites were lower than the values for the neat epoxy in the initial stage of the reaction. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The electrical resistivity of low-density polyethylene/carbon black composites irradiated by ⁶⁰Co γ-rays was investigated as a function of temperature. The experimental results obtained by scanning electron microscopy, solvent extraction techniques, and pressure-specific volume-temperature analysis techniques showed that the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) and negative temperature coefficient (NTC) effects of the composites were influenced by the irradiation dose, network forming (gel), and soluble fractions (sol). The NTC effect was effectively eliminated when the radiation dose reached 400 kGy. The results showed that the elimination of the NTC effect was related to the difference in the thermal expansion of the gel and sol regions. The thermal expansion of the sol played an important role in both increasing the PTC intensity and decreasing the NTC intensity at 400 kGy. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
