Isoflavonoid composition of freshly harvested soy sprouts of six cultivars grown in Colombia was analyzed. Evaluations on the effect of storage time at 12 °C and exogenous application of the elicitor 2,6-dichloro isonicotinic acid (INA) were carried out to establish their influence in the ability of soy sprouts for synthesizing isoflavonoids. In addition, elicited and non-elicited sprouts of soy cultivar Soy SK-7 was assessed for total phenolic content and antioxidant activity according to the growth stage (VE, VC, and V1) and tissues (cotyledon-epicotyl and hypocotyl-root). Isoflavonoid content and antioxidant capacity were dependent on the cultivar, growth stage, tissue, and storage time at 12 °C. Growth stages VE and V1 and the hypocotyl-root exhibited the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. In general, 6"-O-malonylgenistin, daidzin and genistin were the major constituents in the cultivars. Soy SK-7 and Panorama 358 displayed the highest amounts of 6"-O-malonylgenistin (155.9 µg/g) and daidzin (83.5 µg/g), respectively. Results showed that the isoflavonoids and phenolic contents and antioxidant activity were significantly increased by application of INA. This information can be useful to produce soybean sprouts with increased amounts of bioactive compounds and improved response to abiotic and biotic stresses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enlist™ technology confers resistance to 2,4-D herbicides, glyphosate, and ammonium glufosinate for soybeans. However, the application of herbicides to plants can generate stress, even in resistant crops. Thus, here we evaluated whether the application of herbicides in transgenic soybean farms, resistant to these herbicides, adversely affects the activity of antioxidant enzymes and porphobilinogen formation by delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALA-D) activity. At seven days after herbicide application, the aerial part of the plants was collected and used to determine the activity of antioxidant enzymes as catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and guaiacol peroxidase, such as lipid peroxidation levels and the activity of the ALA-D enzyme. The activity of important antioxidant enzymes involved in the scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was increased in the soybean cultivar with the Enlist™ technology, while no severe damage to lipids was detected. However, the activity of ALA-D was inhibited, which could potentially impair the formation of porphobilinogen and decrease photosynthetic efficiency. Soybean is the main crop grown in Brazil and is important to quantify the capacity of increase in yield by crop production intensification and management. This study aims to quantify yield gap and agricultural efficiency (AE) for soybean in Central Cerrado biome, Brazil. Yield gap by management (YGMG) and water deficit (YGWD) and AE and climate efficiency (CE) were calculated based on potential (PoY), attainable (AtY) and actual (AcY) yields. Potential yields and AtY were simulated for the main sowing date, ranging from Oct 11 to Nov 01, using the agroecological zone crop model, from 1980/81 to 2016/17 growing seasons. The sites were Rio Verde (GO), Cristalina (GO), Barreiras (BA) and Peixe (TO). Actual yield was obtained from official statistics for each site. Agricultural efficiency rate for this period and its relationship with CE were analyzed. The YGMG were 4,345, 3,446, 4,531 and 2,649 kg·ha–1 for Rio Verde, Cristalina, Peixe and Barreiras, respectively. Barreiras had a higher YGWD when compared with other sites, reaching a mean of 6,526 kg·ha–1. However, Barreiras had a higher AE (51%), indicating that crop management applied in this region can explore the environmental conditions more than other sites. Agricultural efficiency showed an increasing rate from 0.70 to 1.21% per year, while the relation between AE and CE fitted an exponential negative function, by which higher water volume available reduced AE. Thus, it is possible to double soybean yield through improvements in management based on AtY (7,409 kg·ha–1) and AcY (3,260 kg·ha–1) in Central Cerrado biome, Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The conservation tillage systems is based on the surface protection by crop residue and reduced soil disturbance. These two principles can favor the soil quality and promote sustainable agricultural systems. The study was developed with the objective of measure soil microbial biomass, soil basal respiration, enzymatic activity and soybean yield in conservation systems cultivated with cover crops species in the Northeastern Cerrado. The experiment was carried out in 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 cropping seasons, performed in a randomized blocks design. The treatments were soil tillage systems allocated in the main plots: no-tillage (NT) and minimum tillage (MT) and the cover crops were allocated in the subplots: Pennisetum glaucum (millet), Urochloa ruziziensis (brachiaria), Crotalaria spectabilis (C. spectabilis), Crotalaria ochroleuca (C. ochroleuca), Pennisetum glaucum + Crotalaria spectabilis (millet + C. spectabilis) and spontaneous plants with three replicates. The evaluated variables were dry mass (DM) production and nutrient accumulation in cover crops; soil biological properties, namely microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen (MBC and MBN, respectively), respiration, metabolic quotient (qCO2), dehydrogenase enzymatic activity (DH), fluorescein diacetate (FDA); and soybean yield. The higher production of dry mass and nutrient cycling occurs with the intercropping millet + C. spectabilis and single millet. The highest soybean yield occurs in succession to C. ochroleuca and intercropping of the millet + C. spectabilis. The cultivation of second-harvest with soybean crop after first-harvest with maize crop has become an alternative to aggregate income to farmers in the South region of Brazil. However, there is little information about this cropping system in this region. The aims of this study were to: (i) evaluate the agronomic performance of soybean (Glycine max L.) cultivars growing in second-harvest during the summer; and (ii) evaluate the genetic divergence of the cultivars based on qualitative and quantitative traits. To do this, 18 soybean cultivars were evaluated in three field trials, sown during January in the northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. In each experiment, a randomized block design with four replicates was used. Five quantitative traits (representing the agronomic performance of the cultivars) and 12 qualitative traits (morphological descriptors) were assessed aiming at studying the genetic divergence. Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated using mixed models and BLUPs for genotypes were estimated for each quantitative trait. The cultivars FPS Iguaçu RR and BMX Turbo RR have good agronomic performance and are, based on quantitative and qualitative traits, genetically distant. These cultivars have shown agronomic features that allow their cultivation in the second-harvest in the northwestern of Rio Grande do Sul in addition to be potential genitors for future soybean breeding programs.
