This article discusses the history and aesthetics of the keystones used in structural bridge building and architectural styles, with a focus on the symbolic aspects of the keystone shape. Topics include a description of how a keystone voussoir was inserted into an arch after preliminary wooden and stone projections had been used to support to the other stones during construction, the adoption of the notched top keystone shape as an icon for many commercial and corporate entities, and the various exhibits at science museums that present demonstrations of classical stone arch building.
