The EU-OPENSCREEN (EU-OS) European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) is a multinational, not-for-profit initiative that integrates high-capacity screening platforms and chemistry groups across Europe to facilitate research in chemical biology and early drug discovery. Over the years, the EU-OS has assembled a high-throughput screening compound collection, the European Chemical Biology Library (ECBL), that contains approximately 100 000 commercially available small molecules and a growing number of thousands of academic compounds crowdsourced through our network of European and non-European chemists. As an extension of the ECBL, here we describe the computational design, quality control and use case screenings of the European Fragment Screening Library (EFSL) composed of 1056 mini and small chemical fragments selected from a substructure analysis of the ECBL. Access to the EFSL is open to researchers from both academia and industry. Using EFSL, eight fragment screening campaigns using different structural and biophysical methods have successfully identified fragment hits in the last two years. As one of the highlighted projects for antibiotics, we describe the screening by Bio-Layer Interferometry (BLI) of the EFSL, the identification of a 35 μM fragment hit targeting the beta-ketoacyl-ACP synthase 2 (FabF), its binding confirmation to the protein by X-ray crystallography (PDB 8PJ0), its subsequent rapid exploration of its surrounding chemical space through hit-picking of ECBL compounds that contain the fragment hit as a core substructure, and the final binding confirmation of two follow-up hits by X-ray crystallography (PDB 8R0Iand 8R1V).

Well-characterized small molecules are essential tools for studying the biology and therapeutic relevance of a target protein. However, many compounds reported in the literature and routinely studied in biomedical research lack the potency and selectivity required for mechanistic cellular studies on the function of a given protein. Furthermore, commercially available compounds often do not include useful tools developed by industry as part of their research and development efforts, as they frequently remain proprietary. The freely available donated chemical probe (DCP) library, fueled by generous donations of compounds from industry and academia, enables easy access to a steadily growing collection of these valuable and well-characterized tools. Here, we provide a systematic description of the current DCP library collection and their associated comprehensive characterization data, including a variety of in vitroand cellular assays. Of note, we characterized the set in relevant human primary models by employing hepatotoxicity screening in primary human liver spheroids and viability screening in patient-derived colorectal cancer organoids and matched normal-adjacent epithelium. Taken together, the DCP library represents a well-annotated, openly available collection of tool compounds for studying a wide range of targets, including kinases, G-protein-coupled receptors, and ion channels. As such, it represents a unique resource for the biomedical research community.

This article considers the artists’ book collections in two academic libraries: New York University, where books circulate routinely, and Cornell University, where books circulate by special arrangement. The authors examine how these collections were formed, their evolution, the challenges and advantages to having open collections, recommendations for libraries considering making their holdings available to patrons in the open stacks, and how these initiatives can contribute to a more equitable and inclusive library environment. In 2018, the University of Kansas (KU) Libraries upgraded from a tired, twenty-year-old basement space to a new, purpose-built conservation lab for library and archives collections. The new conservation lab, which is housed in the special collections and archives library, quadrupled available lab space for its conservators and fleet of student employees. The move afforded Conservation space in the same library as the most vulnerable collection materials. In addition, rooms in the special collections and archives library were repurposed for audiovisual (AV) preservation, creating two new spaces for film and video workflows and upgrading an existing small audio room. This paper will discuss the conservation and preservation lab construction literature and will serve as a practical exemplar of the challenges and successes of the planning process, including lessons learned and unexpected benefits.

Collection development activities that involve electronic content require knowledge of quantitative research methods. The ability to calculate cost per use, identify usage trends, and provide evidence for collection development decisions are essential skills in the digital age. Because of the dynamic nature of electronic resources, particularly e-books, it has been challenging to create standardized methods that support routine evaluations of collection materials. While the term quantitative analysis can seem daunting, I hope this issue of Library Technology Reports (vol. 53, no. 4), “Applying Quantitative Methods to E-book Collections,” demonstrates that it is possible to hone quantitative skill sets and develop an evaluation framework for e-book collections based around readily available quantitative data sources regardless of the size of an individual library system or equipment budget. This study provides empirical relationships between photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and broadband clear-sky indices at ground level for both the PAR global irradiance and its direct component. Once multiplied by the irradiance in clear-sky conditions, the clear-sky index provides the irradiance under cloudy conditions. The relationships are developed by the means of radiative transfer simulations of various realistic atmospheric states including both ice and water cloud phases. For the direct component, the PAR clear-sky index is equal to the broadband clear-sky index. For global irradiance, several linear relationships are proposed depending on the availability of cloud properties namely cloud phase and cloud optical depth. The developed relationships are validated numerically and experimentally by using ground-based measurements from the SURFRAD network in the U.S.A. Overall, it has been found, a squared correlation coefficient R² close to 1.00 and a relative bias (relative root mean square error) in absolute value less than 3% (6%) with respect to the means of the relevant measurements, demonstrating a high level of accuracy of the proposed relationships. As we prepared the special issue on Oceania for the IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, the question arose: What collections of primary data are available that may be used by current and future historians? We noticed the absence of oral histories that capture accounts from early pioneers of computing describing their work as entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, IT journalists, and legislators. First, taking Australia as an example, searching relevant sources yields very little available material (Table 1). This is surprising, for instance, Australia was an early innovator with Trevor Pearcey and Maston Beard building one of the first half dozen of computers in the world in Sydney [1], the first computer to play music [2]. Likewise, the first UNIX port happened Down Under [3] and WiFi came out of CSIRO and Radiata. The situation is similar in New Zealand, where there are only limited resources available, namely two small collections in the National Library of New Zealand, recorded for the 25th and 50th anniversaries of the New Zealand Computer Society, respectively (Table 1).

Abstract:This article updates a description on Malay and Bugis manuscripts and early printed books at the Library of Congress published by A. Kohar Rony almost thirty years ago. It discusses the provenance of these holdings, linking them to the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838–42 by means of lists of manuscript and book purchases found at the Smithsonian Institution Archives, and draws attention to the role of the American missionary, Alfred North, in their acquisition. The article also highlights three items at the Library of Congress that were re-discovered due to these lists, among them a Malay code of law copied by Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir. In addition, the article points towards a digitized collection of 46 nineteenth-century letters available online through the Library of Congress website (https://lccn.loc.gov/2019276520).

This article provides information on the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). The program operate sunder authority of U.S. Code Title 44 and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-130. Chapter 19 of Title 44 gives the Superintendent of Documents responsibility for acquiring, cataloging, and distributing government information to libraries. Title 44 and OMB Circular A-130 require federal agencies to make their publications available for distribution to depository libraries through the Superintendent of Documents. Among the approximately 1,400 depository libraries, 53 regionals receive all publications distributed through the FDLP and are required to retain documents permanently to ensure the availability of archival collections. The FDLP network is in the process of transforming from a tangible collection of print, maps, and microforms to an online collection available to libraries and the public. Funds for the FDLP come from the Superintendent of Documents' budget. Expenditure reports do not specify the portion of this budget used to support the program. The Government Printing Office and the depository libraries are taking steps to increase availability of and access to government information.
