The article reports that scholars of ancient Greece in the U.S. are envisioning the use of computers to facilitate their research. At the University of California at Irvine, Theodore F. Brunner is directing the development of the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae database which will include all surviving Greek texts from about 750 B.C. to about 600 A.D. A database of epigraphs from Attica from about 700 B.C. to about 400 A.D. is being developed under the direction of Kevin Clinton at Cornell University.

The article reports that the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Hellenic Studies at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, will provide funding for the Hellenic Studies Program at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale. The article reports that Western Maryland College scholar Gregory Alles presented the theory that the Greek epic poetry "Iliad" reflected religious ideology in ancient Greece in the eighth century B.C. Alles pointed out that the character of Achilles is a dramatic representation of destructive forces in a community where consensus has failed.
