The Loyal Orders have held marches in Drumcree, Ireland, since the 1790's, with the marches designed to reinforce the Protestants' feelings of loyalty at being Ulstermen. Some march with triumphalism and others march with an air of dignified commemoration. Catholics are perceived as the enemy, with the English also derided for failing to understand the Protestant's need to celebrate their partial victory over Rome. The Loyal Orders called for 100,000 people to march im summer 1998, but many stayed away. Some compromises were made to avoid conflict.
