The article examines the debate over genetically engineered crops, focusing primarily on a form of rice endowed with genes from corn and a bacterium known as "Golden Rice" that can produce beta carotene. Details are provided on the production of Golden Rice by the nonprofit group International Rice Research Institute as well as opposition from those in the Philippines concerned about health risks. According to the author, such technology could improve nutrition in developing countries.
