Racing newspaper The Sporting Life was found guilty of libel on Feb. 26, 1998, over its allegations that trainer Lynda Ramsden, her husband Jack and champion jockey Kieren Fallon had cheated punters by arranging for one of their horses to lose a race. An editorial in The Sporting Life in May 1995 claimed that the Ramsdens had instructed Fallon to hold a horse back in a minor race on Apr. 18, 1995, in order to give it better odds in a more important race three weeks later. Television commentator Derek Thompson testified that he had been told of this by Fallon, an allegation Fallon emphatically denied.
