Singaporean parents will soon be able to sue their children for financial support once the proposed Maintenance of Parents Bill is approved by parliament. The law was drafted in view of the growing population of citizens over 60 in the country. Of those belonging to this group without their own source of income, 95% are receiving contributions from relatives, while the remaining 5% are forced to fend for themselves. Through the bill, lawmakers hope to guarantee elderly people of maintenance from any of their children, in the same way that the law compels parents to look after their children.
