This process can also be triggered by new external conditions: in the example of steady-state conduction, the copper bar exhibits transient conduction as soon as one end is exposed to a different temperature than the other. Steady-state conduction occurs when the temperature difference(s) driving the conduction are constant, and the spatial distribution of temperatures (temperature field) in the conducting item does not vary anymore (after an equilibration time).
