This article reports that a June 1, 1995 federal deadline for the switch to computerized, paperless trading of stocks and bonds has retail investors and securities firms poised for an overhaul that will forever change the way Wall Street operates. It is reported that stock and bond trades that are currently settled within five days will be narrowed to three. A speedier settlement is meant to be a safeguard against a financial collapse.

ACM SIGIR 2021 conference was organized as a fully online event, with more than 1,000 attendees from dozens of countries, a large technical program, and several activities and initiatives not seen at SIGIR before. This conference report provides some of the important details of how the organizers navigated through changing environments - political, social, and public health - moving the conference from NYC to Montreal and then to online. In addition to that decision process, the report also highlights several new and renewed initiatives around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The article presents information on the first symposium on Small Systems organized by the Association for Computing Machinery that was held on August 2-3, 1978 in New York City under the sponsorship of Small Computing Systems and Applications. The keynote speaker was Maurice V. Wilkes of the University of Cambridge. Following the keynote address, a distinguished panel session was presented. A Best Paper Award based upon the quality of the written material and oral presentation was given to Jacob Slonim, Michael Farrell, and Paul Fisher of Kansas State University for the paper "A Survey of Mini-Database Management Systems in 1977."

On July 23, 1992, New York City Mayor David Dinkins announced that seven thousand Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) voting machines would be purchased from the company Sequoia Pacific, pending the outcome of public hearings. This runs counter to the advice of New York Bar Association, independent groups of concerned scientists and citizens and the consulting firm SRI International, all of whom have indicated that the equipment is not yet fit for use. At first glance, most DRE appear similar to mechanical "lever" voting machines. Lacking any visual identification as "computers," voters would be unlikely to assume that one or more microprocessors are housed in units. The ballot is printed on paper which is mounted over a panel of buttons and light emitting diodes. The astute reader, having been given this description of the system, should already have at least a dozen points of entry in mind for system tampering. Sequoia has now had almost four years since they were told they would be awarded the contract if they could bring their machines up to specifications stated in Requirements for Purchase Act.
