Reports that the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has honored U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island at its February Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C. Award which was given to Senator Pell to commemorate his dedication to library and education issues; Role of Senator Pell in creating the Higher Education Act of 1965, the Library Service and Construction Act, and the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965; Efforts of Senator Pell to gain national policy on permanent paper, and his work for the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The article presents an editorial looking at U.S. Democratic Senator Barack Obama, who unofficially declared his intentions for running in the 2008 presidential race by filing papers for a presidential exploratory committee. According to the author, there is an undeniable aura of excitement that surrounds Obama, a kind of charisma other candidates, no matter their credentials, may be hard-pressed to match.
