This paper explores disciplinary formation as both a physical and an intellectual process. That is, how decisions regarding tangible entities - in this case, the Pitt Rivers collection and the building designed to house it in Oxford - have shaped the intellectual landscape of a university discipline. The negotiations surrounding General Pitt Rivers's donation to Oxford in the 1880s were driven forward by a group of Oxford scientists based in the University Museum who were intent on establishing a dedicated space for anthropology at the University. The collection might have been amalgamated with that of the Ashmolean, since its future was also the subject of active debate at the time, but Pitt Rivers and his scientific peers at Oxford succeeded in establishing the collection as a new ethnographic department within the University Museum. Their achievement had long-lasting implications for the University's collections, and for the future shape of Oxford anthropology as an academic discipline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reviews two key initiatives undertaken in the historical city of Oxford to bring about reductions in energy-related CO2 emissions on a dwelling-level as well as city-wide scale, using both bottom-up and top-down carbon-counting approaches. The development and application of a bottom-up carbon-counting approach called DECoRuM is described. DECoRuM is a Geographical Information System-based software model which estimates and maps baseline energy use and CO2 emissions on a house-by-house level, identifies ‘pollution’ hotspots, predicts the potential for reductions in CO2 emissions and monitors reductions achieved as a result of deploying energy efficiency measures and renewable energy systems. The application of DECoRuM model to a case study in Oxford shows that CO2 emission reductions above 60% are possible, at a cost of between £6 and £77 per tonne of CO2 emissions saved, depending upon the package of measures used and the scenario of capital costs (low or high) employed. Alongside DECoRuM, the author has led the development of an action-oriented Oxford Climate Change Action Plan (OCCAP) which uses top-down approaches to construct an accurate CO2 emissions inventory for Oxford city for a baseline year, establish CO2 reduction targets and propose action for each of the energy-related sectors to meet those targets. The article focuses on the forty-sixth Annual Meeting of the British Association of Dermatology that held in Oxford, England on 20-23 July, 1966 under the Presidency of Dr. H. Renwick Vickers. The meeting was attended by 352 members and guests, many of whom stayed at Lady Margaret Hall. This must have been a record meeting in terms of the number of participants and the number of papers read, 134 and 37 respectively. Alkaline phosphates shown by the histochemical method revealed the minute patterns of the cutaneous circulation through staining of the endothelium of capillaries and arterioles.

This paper describes four watercolour paintings of Amerindians from the collection of General Pitt Rivers. Previously unidentified, they have been traced to the hand of Edward A. Goodall, the artist who accompanied the British Guiana boundary expedition of 1841-3. The paintings appear to be the artist's own copies of his original sketches now housed in the British Library, three of which were published in 1977 in Goodall's Sketches of Amerindian Tribes 1841-43. The article focuses on Darier's disease in the Oxford region. Onset was usually in adolescence and was often sudden following exposure to sunlight; the subsequent course tended to be chronic and relapsing. Affected and unaffected members of the family were examined whenever possible and tissue histocompatibility antigens were studied. Inheritance was usually autosomal dominant although sporadic cases occurred and incomplete forms of the condition were also noted. The incidence of this condition in the local population has been assessed and the relative frequency of the various skin, nail and mucosal changes documented.

Between 1698 and ca. 1715 Nathaniel Spinckes created an Anglo-Saxon glossary, now Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Rawlinson C.887. This article describes the manuscript, identifies Spinckes's sources, traces the compilation process and speculates on its purpose, and positions it within the larger context of contemporary antiquarian projects. Spinckes, who enjoyed a long friendship and working relationship with George Hickes and Edward Thwaites, is known for his role as a bishop in the nonjuring Church of England, but not for his part in the compilation and publication of Hickes's Linguarum veterum septentrionalium Thesaurus Grammatico-criticus et Archaeologicus (1698-1705). His unpublished manuscript reflects a careful reader of some of the earliest published editions of Anglo-Saxon texts. It, together with surviving correspondence, attests to Spinckes's place in the late-seventeenth and early eighteenth-century antiquarian project to recover Old English. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The article presents a research on the formation of a multidisciplinary team which will provide acute stroke thrombolysis at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England. The departments involved in the team are the ambulance services (AS), emergency department (ED), and radiology department. The authors concluded that the acute stroke thrombolysis protocol was safely implemented and the results are similar to those reported from other centers.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) represents the sum of advanced gastric cancer (AGC) and early gastric cancer (EGC). Endoscopy (with biopsies) is the gold standard for detection of GC, but a false-negative rate of up to 19% is reported. AIM: To determine whether patients with GC had had an oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD) in the year preceding diagnosis that might reasonably have been expected to detect the cancer, as a measure of quality assurance of endoscopic practice. METHODS: Patients with histologically proven GC were identified from pathology records. Endoscopy reports and case notes were examined to identify any OGD before diagnosis, the interval and endoscopic findings. A false-negative OGD was defined as one where GC was neither suspected nor shown at pathology, but where a diagnosis of GC was made within 12 months. RESULTS: Between January 2005 and February 2008, 9764 OGDs were performed. GC was diagnosed in 74 patients (male/female ratio 2.89; median age 76, range 38–95). Nine (12%) patients had EGC. There were no differences in age, sex or symptoms between the EGC and AGC group. Sixty-eight of the 74 patients with GC (92%) presented with alarm symptoms. Ten of the 74 had had an OGD within 12 months before definitive diagnosis; all these were planned because of suspicious lesions. Significantly fewer biopsies were performed at OGDs preceding definitive diagnosis (median 2 (0–10) vs 6 (2–12); p=0.002). CONCLUSION: False-negative rates of 0% (within 12 months) and 8% (within 3 years) for diagnosis of GC are reassuring, but an inadequate number of biopsies compromises the quality assurance of endoscopy. There have been wide-ranging debates about medicine and the law encapsulated in the figure of the coroner in Victorian England. Recently the historical literature on coroners has been enriched by macro-studies. Despite this important research, the social lives of coroners and their daily interactions remain relatively neglected in standard historical accounts. This article redresses that issue by examining the working life of the coroner for Oxford during the late-Victorian era. Edward Law Hussey kept very detailed records of his time in office as coroner. New research material makes it feasible to trace his professional background, from doctor of the sick poor, to hospital house surgeon and then busy coroner. His career trajectory, personal interactions, and professional disputes, provide an important historical prism illuminating contemporary debates that occupied coroners in their working lives. Hussey tried to improve his medico-legal reach and the public image of his coroner's office by reducing infanticide rates, converting a public mortuary, and acquiring a proper coroner's court. His campaigns had limited success because the social scene in which he worked was complicated by the dominance of health and welfare agencies that resented his role as an expanding arm of the Victorian information state. For a period of almost two centuries the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford functioned as an integrated scientific institution, combining a conventional museum display with a chemical laboratory and a school of natural history. The history of the collection of naturalia is examined here in terms of three principal phases: during the earliest of these the character of the displays as revealed by contemporary catalogues was largely conditioned by the collection's genesis in a seventeenth-century cabinet of curiosities; in the second phase, centred early in the second half of the eighteenth century, the impact of Linnaeus began to make itself felt; in the third phase, occupying the second quarter of the nineteenth century, the entire collection was redisplayed as an exposition of natural theology. Finally, by 1860 the natural specimens were transferred from the Ashmolean, leaving a much reduced collection of manmade objects from which the Museum in its current form was later relaunched. In January 1776, Reinhold Forster and his son George sent to Oxford a collection of Pacific artefacts selected from those they had acquired while serving as naturalists on Captain Cook's second famous voyage. The collection is preserved at the University of Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum. This essay introduces the collection and presents the two extant contemporary documents relating to the gift: a letter from the Forsters to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford and a manuscript 'Catalogue of Curiosities sent to Oxford'. Although there is evidence to support an autoimmune basis for lichen sclerosus, there have also been some studies which suggest an infective aetiology. These include reports of the presence of spirochaetal forms with Steiner silver stains and purplish coccoid forms with Fite stains. We have repeated these studies on vulval biopsies obtained from 16 patients with vulval lichen sclerosus. Using the Steiner silver method we found no evidence of spirochaetal forms in any of the specimens. With the Fite stain we observed purple-staining coccoid forms within the dermis of 13 of the 16 lichen sclerosus specimens. However, these coccoid forms also stained strongly positive with toluidine blue, suggesting they were mast cell granules rather than micro-organisms. We were therefore unable to demonstrate evidence for an infective aetiology in vulval lichen sclerosus, although this cannot yet be excluded. Aim This study aimed to examine changes in the provision of vascular services in the Oxford region over 5 years. Methods A questionnaire was sent to all general surgeons in the region asking of their involvement in vascular surgery. Data were obtained from the Department of Health concerning vascular procedures and inpatient codes for each district in the Oxford Region from 1990–1991 to 1994–1995. Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) data for abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and femoral artery reconstruction were validated against data collected prospectively for West Berkshire. Results Eighteen of 45 surgeons who replied to the questionnaire carried out elective and emergency arterial work. All were members of the Vascular Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VSS). All but one took part in the general surgical rota. Eight surgeons carried out emergency arterial surgery only; only two of these were members of the VSS. Of 19 surgeons undertaking no arterial surgery, 15 operated on primary and 11 on recurrent varicose veins. The number of arterial reconstructions rose from 20·8 per 100000 population to 28 per 100000 throughout the study. The greatest increase occurred in districts where a new vascular consultant had been appointed. Similar results were obtained with endovascular procedures. The number of major amputations remained fairly constant at approximately 11 per 100000 population. The number of inpatient episodes for arterial disease also rose, from 35·7 to 47·6 per 100000. In validating OPCS codes against prospectively collected data, discrepancies for individual years were noted but the annual trend was reflected fairly accurately by the codes. This article reexamines the selection process in the context of a sample of applicants to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University in 1978. We have observed that a stable equation can be estimated that correctly classifies a high proportion of candidates between accepted and rejected categories and forecasts well out of sample. Performance in Oxford's own entrance exam was found to be the most important public examination influence on the probability of being accepted. A- and O-levels, while less influential, were still highly significant. Inclusion of individual entrance and A-level marks substantially improved the performance of the function and some exam results were observed to be more significant than others. Socioeconomic variables as a group were highly significant. While women had a slightly higher probability of being admitted ceteris paribus than men there was not much evidence of sex discrimination. Far more important was the type of school from which the candidate came. Finally, in contrast to selection, the decision to award a scholarship or exhibition appears to be based virtually entirely on entrance exam performance and, to a lesser extent. A-level grades.
