Kennedy Krieger Institute Vice President of Psychiatric Services and Research Robert Findling, M.D., recently received the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's (AACAP's) 2019 Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Award for Scientific Achievement for his research on the role of lithium in the maintenance treatment of pediatric patients with bipolar I disorder. The award, which was presented Oct. 16 at the AACAP annual meeting in Chicago, recognizes the most outstanding scientific paper published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from July 2018 through June 2019, a news release stated. Published in February 2019, the study, "Lithium for the Maintenance Treatment of Bipolar I Disorder: A Double‐Blind, Placebo‐Controlled Discontinuation Study," examines the long‐term safety of lithium through a randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled discontinuation trial. Jennifer L. Doleac and Anita Mukherjee are at it again. After last spring's publication of their working paper suggesting that providing naloxone, an overdose‐reversal drug, would just encourage more people to use fentanyl, they were roundly criticized by the public health research community (see ADAW, March 19). They said naloxone eliminated the "moral hazard" of opioid use. Both economists, they recently wrote a similar article published by the Brookings Institution, also suggesting that harm reduction in general, including syringe exchanges, promotes drug use and therefore contributes to overdoses. A novel approach to evaluating the impact of nonprofit organizations is proposed, combining social network and linguistic analysis. The authors examined data from nonprofit organizations' websites and site hyperlinks to other organizations. They identified 369 sites of organizations that measure social impact and captured inbound and outbound weblinks to construct a relational structure. Keywords from the sites were categorized as reflecting scientific, civil society or managerial domains and located the entity in a triangular semantic space. While most organizations fell into one of the three communities, some were in an interstitial space spanning these domains. The interstitial organizations used a mix of terminology, were densely interconnected and connected extensively to organizations across domains, but there were few direct connections among the three domains. The resulting map integrates cultural and relational dimensions and reveals hidden patterns and clusters. The approach can be used with other social systems combining rich text with relational data.
