The article analyzes challenges that come with food-related papers issued by Great Britain's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs predicting the need for the world to produce 70 percent more food by 2050. Factors that would affect science and technology in the future include the decline in public and private spending on research for crop yield growth, and the time lag between initial research and practical applications. Other problems foreseen are climate change, water depletion, demand for renewable energy, and sustainability.
