CONFERENCES & conventions , *COMPUTER software - Abstract
This article presents news and events related to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The advance program for the International Conference on Software Engineering, September 13-16, 1982, in Tokyo, includes sessions on language processing; software configuration management; quantitative aspects of software; requirement techniques; programming environments; maintenance evaluation and tools; specification techniques; testing and tools; software notations; and program analysis. Up to two $1000 prizes for best submitted papers are to be awarded by the Technical Committee on Software Engineering. The Symposium on Programming Language Issues in Software Systems sponsored by ACM SIGPLAN, to be held during June 27-29, 1983 in San Francisco, California, is to focus on innovation in two major areas: new programming language constructs and abstraction mechanisms; and the application of programming language principles to the design of software systems. Relevant topics in the first area encompass languages or language constructs; abstraction techniques; specification methods; and techniques for supporting concurrency or exception handling. In the second area topics include the application of programming language principles and techniques to the design and organization of software systems.

CONFERENCES & conventions , *COMPUTERS , *ADULT education workshops , *MULTIMEDIA systems - Abstract
This article presents an announcement for the formation of Special Interest Group (SIG) on multimedia. The SIC Board recently gave preliminary approval for the formation of a new SIC on multimedia. This coincided with the very positive response to Multimedia 1993, the first Association for Computing Machinery International Conference on Multimedia held at Anaheim, California. More than 200 papers have been submitted to Multimedia 1993. The conference, which will be co-located with SIGGRAPH 1993, was an exciting event with top-quality papers, a series of helpful courses, and three special workshops on distributed, medical and sound processing applications. Complimentary membership in the SIC on multimedia was being offered to all those who attend the 1993 Multimedia Conference.

CONTESTS , *COLLEGE students , *PROFESSIONAL education , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges , *CYBERNETICS - Abstract
The article presents information on the First Student Paper Competition organized at Stanford, California by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Although launched barely two years ago, the Student Paper Competition is proving to be a constructive force in computer science education at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Editorial and refereeing activities undertaken by graduate students translate into a type of professional development experience that is enriching for the participants and healthy for the profession as a whole. The active participation of an equal if not larger number of undergraduate students who submitted papers for the competition attests to the stimulation for scientific and professional growth among students in computer science everywhere. George E. Forsythe, who was a pioneer and who encouraged many of his colleagues to work toward the development of a computer discipline of widespread scientific value, strongly favored promoting the Student Paper Competition to serve this end. As a computer science department chairman he had encouraged the active participation of students in academic and administrative affairs at Stanford University and also at ACM. This example was the inspiration for the plan that graduate students take active and major roles in the management of the Competition.

CONFERENCES & conventions , *COMPUTER integrated manufacturing systems , *MANUFACTURING process automation - Abstract
This article focuses on the events and activities related to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The ACM Special Interest Group on Design Automation and the Design Automation Technical Committee are sponsoring the 13th Design Automation Conference that will be held during June 28-30, at Jack Tar Hotel, San Francisco, California. The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum whereby developments in the field of design automation can be presented and discussed. The conference aim is to improve and expand the quality and quantity of design automation developments. The three-day technical program has been arranged so that the technical papers are presented concurrently in different disciplines of design automation. The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) announced that the next of the triennial IFIP Congresses will be held in Toronto, Canada during August 8-12, 1977. The theme of the Congress is "The Maturing Profession--Perspectives and Prospects." IFIP Congress 77 will be the first North American gathering of international computer professionals under the aegis of IFIP since 1965.

FAX machines , *FAX transmission equipment , *COMPUTER software - Abstract
A new fax compression technique that can squeeze 200 pages of text or software code onto a single piece of paper has been developed by Palo Alto, California-based InfoImaging Technologies Inc. 3D Fax compresses pages to be faxed into a single indecipherable image that can be sent via fax machine or computer to its destination, where it can then be scanned, allowing 3D fax software to separate out the various pages of text or code. Limited capability versions of the software can be found at the company's Web site.
