This paper considers the optimization problem for partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) with the continuous state, observation, and action spaces. POMDPs with the discrete spaces have emerged as a promising approach to the decision systems with imperfect state information. However, in recent applications of POMDPs, there are many problems that have continuous states, observations, and actions. For such problems, due to the infinite dimensionality of the belief space, the existing studies usually discretize the continuous spaces with the sufficient or nonsufficient statistics, which may cause the curse of dimensionality and performance degradation. In this paper, based on the sensitivity analysis of the performance criteria, we have developed a simulation-based policy iteration algorithm to find the local optimal observation-based policy for POMDPs with the continuous spaces. The proposed algorithm needs none of the specific assumptions and prior information, and has a low computational complexity. In this paper we consider distributed optimization problems in which the cost function is separable, i.e., a sum of possibly non-smooth functions all sharing a common variable, and can be split into a strongly convex term and a convex one. The second term is typically used to encode constraints or to regularize the solution. We propose a class of distributed optimization algorithms based on proximal gradient methods applied to the dual problem. We show that, by choosing suitable primal variable copies, the dual problem is itself separable when written in terms of conjugate functions, and the dual variables can be stacked into non-overlapping blocks associated to the computing nodes. We first show that a weighted proximal gradient on the dual function leads to a synchronous distributed algorithm with local dual proximal gradient updates at each node. Then, as main paper contribution, we develop asynchronous versions of the algorithm in which the node updates are triggered by local timers without any global iteration counter. This paper proposes distributed discrete-time algorithms to cooperatively solve an additive cost optimization problem in multiagent networks. The striking feature lies in the use of only the sign of relative state information between neighbors, which substantially differentiates our algorithms from others in the existing literature. We first interpret the proposed algorithms in terms of the penalty method in optimization theory and then perform nonasymptotic analysis to study convergence for static network graphs. Compared with the celebrated distributed subgradient algorithms, which, however, use the exact relative state information, the convergence speed is essentially not affected by the loss of information. We also study how introducing noise into the relative state information and randomly activated graphs affect the performance of our algorithms. This paper presents continuous-time multiagent systems for distributed minimax optimization subject to bounded constraints. All agents in the system are divided into two groups for minimization and maximization. The multiagent system features competitive intergroup interactions and cooperative intragroup interactions, both of which are based on the output information of agents. First, a proportional-integral (PI) intragroup interaction rule is utilized for consensus within each group in the system. With this interaction rule, the system is proved to be convergent to an optimal solution to the problem, under a certain requirement on the intergroup interactions. Second, another discontinuous intragroup interaction rule is introduced. It is proved that the system with such an interaction is still convergent to an optimal solution if the proportional gain exceeds a derived lower bound, without the previous requirement on the intergroup interactions. This paper considers a class of stochastic source-seeking problems to drive a mobile robot to the minimizer of a source signal. Our approach is first analyzed in an obstacle-free scenario, where measurements of the signal at the robot location and information of a contact sensor are required. We extend our results to environments with obstacles under mild assumptions on the step size. Our approach builds on the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation idea to obtain information of the signal field. We prove the practical convergence of the algorithms to a ball whose size depends on the step size that contains the location of the source. The novelty relies in that we consider nondifferentiable convex functions, a fixed step size, and the environment may contain obstacles. Our proof methods employ nonsmooth Lyapunov function theory, tools from convex analysis, and stochastic difference inclusions. This paper considers the problem of a leader that seeks to optimally influence the opinions of agents in a directed network through connecting with a limited number of the agents (“direct followers”), possibly in the presence of a fixed competing leader. The settings involving a single leader and two competing leaders are unified into a general combinatoric optimization problem, for which two heuristic approaches are developed. The first approach is based on a convex relaxation scheme, possibly in combination with the $\ell _1$ -norm regularization technique, and the second is based on a greedy selection strategy. The main technical novelties of this work are in the establishment of supermodularity of the objective function and convexity of its continuous relaxation. The greedy approach is guaranteed to have a lower bound on the approximation ratio sharper than $(1-1/e)$ , while the convex approach can benefit from efficient (customized) numerical solvers to have practically comparable solutions possibly with faster computation times. The two approaches can be combined to provide improved results. This paper proposes distributed algorithms to solve robust convex optimization (RCO) when the constraints are affected by nonlinear uncertainty. We adopt a scenario approach by randomly sampling the uncertainty set. To facilitate the computational task, instead of using a single centralized processor to obtain a “global solution” of the scenario problem (SP), we resort to multiple interconnected processors that are distributed among different nodes of a network to simultaneously solve the SP. Then, we propose a primal-dual subgradient algorithm and a random projection algorithm to distributedly solve the SP over undirected and directed graphs, respectively. Both algorithms are given in an explicit recursive form with simple iterations, which are especially suited for processors with limited computational capability. We show that, if the underlying graph is strongly connected, each node asymptotically computes a common optimal solution to the SP with a convergence rate $O(1/(\sum _{t=1}^k\zeta ^t))$ , where $\lbrace \zeta ^t\rbrace$ is a sequence of appropriately decreasing stepsizes. That is, the RCO is effectively solved in a distributed way. The relations with the existing literature on robust convex programs are thoroughly discussed and an example of robust system identification is included to validate the effectiveness of our distributed algorithms. The relational model of data, the XRM Relational Memory System, and the SEQUEL language have been covered in previous papers and are reviewed. SEQUEL is a relational data sublanguage intended for ad hoc interactive problem solving by non-computer specialists. A version of SEQUEL that has been implemented in a prototype interpreter is described. The Interpreter is designed to minimize the data accessing operations required to respond to an arbitrary query. In this paper the comparison of a proposed neural network with generalized type-2 fuzzy weights (NNGT2FW) with respect to the monolithic neural network (NN) and the neural network with interval type-2 fuzzy weights (NNIT2FW) is presented. Generalized type-2 fuzzy inference systems are used to obtain the generalized type-2 fuzzy weights and are designed by a strategy of increasing and decreasing an epsilon variable for obtaining the different sizes of the footprint of uncertainty (FOU) for the generalized membership functions. The proposed method is based on recent approaches that handle weight adaptation using type-1 and type-2 fuzzy logic. The approach is applied to the prediction of the Mackey–Glass time series, and results are shown to outperform the results produced by other neural models. Gaussian noise was applied to the test data of the Mackey–Glass time series for finding out which of the presented methods in this paper shows better performance and tolerance to noise. The problems to find attribute reduction in rough sets and to obtain the minimal vertex cover for graphs are both NP-hard problems. This paper studies the relationship between the two problems. The vertex cover problem for graphs from the perspective of rough sets is first investigated. The attribute reduction of an information system is then studied in the framework of graph theory. The results in this paper show that finding the minimal vertex cover of a graph is equivalent to finding the attribute reduction of an information system induced from the graph. Conversely, the attribute reduction computation can be translated into the calculation of the minimal vertex cover of a derivative graph. Finally, a new algorithm for the vertex cover problem based on rough sets is presented. Furthermore, experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The recent literature indicates that preserving global pairwise sample similarity is of great importance for feature selection and that many existing selection criteria essentially work in this way. In this paper, we argue that besides global pairwise sample similarity, the local geometric structure of data is also critical and that these two factors play different roles in different learning scenarios. In order to show this, we propose a global and local structure preservation framework for feature selection (GLSPFS) which integrates both global pairwise sample similarity and local geometric data structure to conduct feature selection. To demonstrate the generality of our framework, we employ methods that are well known in the literature to model the local geometric data structure and develop three specific GLSPFS-based feature selection algorithms. Also, we develop an efficient optimization algorithm with proven global convergence to solve the resulting feature selection problem. A comprehensive experimental study is then conducted in order to compare our feature selection algorithms with many state-of-the-art ones in supervised, unsupervised, and semisupervised learning scenarios. The result indicates that: 1) our framework consistently achieves statistically significant improvement in selection performance when compared with the currently used algorithms; 2) in supervised and semisupervised learning scenarios, preserving global pairwise similarity is more important than preserving local geometric data structure; 3) in the unsupervised scenario, preserving local geometric data structure becomes clearly more important; and 4) the best feature selection performance is always obtained when the two factors are appropriately integrated. In summary, this paper not only validates the advantages of the proposed GLSPFS framework but also gains more insight into the information to be preserved in different feature selection tasks. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to consider selected optimization problems with parameter uncertainty. A case is studied when uncertain parameters in functions undergoing the optimization belong to intervals of known bounds as well as the absolute regret based approach for coping with such an uncertainty is applied. The paper presents three different cases depending on properties of optimization problems and proposes which method can be used to solve corresponding problems. Design/methodology/approach – The worst-case absolute regret method is employed to manage interval uncertainty in functions to be optimized. To solve resulting uncertain optimization problems, optimal, approximate as well as heuristic solution algorithms have been elaborated for particular problems presented and described in the paper. The latter one is based on Scatter Search metaheuristics. Findings – Solution algorithms for worst-case absolute regret versions of the following optimization problems have been determined: resource allocation in a complex of independent operations and two task scheduling problems Q‖∑Ci and P‖Cmax. Research limitations/implications – It is very difficult to generalize the results obtained and to use them for solving other optimization problems which correspond to real-world applications. Such new cases require separate investigations. Practical implications – The considered allocations as well as task scheduling problems have plenty of applications, for example in computer and manufacturing systems. Their versions with not precisely known parameters can be met commonly. In the paper a Lyapunov matrices approach to the parametric optimization problem of a neutral system with two delays and with a P-controller is presented. The value of integral quadratic performance index of quality is equal to the value of Lyapunov functional for the initial function of the neutral system with two delays. Approximate Numerical Expressions (ANEs) are linguistic expressions involving numerical values and referring to imprecise ranges of values, illustrated by examples such as “ about 100 ”. In this paper, a general principle is proposed to interpret uncontextualised ANEs as intervals of denoted values. It is based on an empirically justified combination of characteristics of numerical values, both arithmetical and cognitive, and in particular, taking into account the cognitive salience of numbers. This general principle is instantiated in two computational models that can be extended so as to take into account the applicative context. An empirical study is conducted to assess the performances of the two models, comparing them to state-of-the-art methods, on real interpretations collected through an on-line questionnaire. Results validate the proposed characteristics used to build the models and show that they offer the best performances in estimating the median interval chosen as representative of the collected intervals. The advantages and applications of rule-based systems have caused them to be widely recognized as one of the most popular systems in human decision-making, due to their accuracy and efficiency. To improve the performance of rule-based systems, there are several issues proposed to be focused. First, it is unnecessary to take the entire rule base into consideration during each decision-making process. Second, there is no need to visit the entire rule base to search for the key rules. Last, the key rules for each decision-making process should be different. This paper focuses on an advanced extended belief rule base (EBRB) system and proposes a multi-attribute search framework (MaSF) to reconstruct the relationship between rules in the EBRB to form the MaSF-based EBRB. MaSFs can be divided into k -dimensional tree (KDT)-based MaSFs and Burkhard–Keller (BKT)-based MaSFs. The former is targeted at decision-making problems with small-scale attribute datasets, while the latter is for those with large-scale attribute datasets. Based on the MaSF-based EBRB, the k -neighbor search and the best activated rule set algorithms are further proposed to find both the unique and the desired rules for each decision-making process without visiting the entire EBRB, especially when handling classification problems with large attribute datasets. Two sets of experiments based on benchmark datasets with different numbers of attributes are performed to analyze the difference between KDT-based MaSFs and BKT-based MaSFs, and to demonstrate how to use MaSFs to improve the accuracy and efficiency of EBRB systems. This paper presents a framework for global synchronization of dynamical networks with nonidentical nodes. Several criteria for synchronization are given using free matrices for both cases of synchronizing to a common equilibrium solution of all isolated nodes and synchronizing to the average state trajectory. These criteria can be viewed as generalizations of the master stability function method for local synchronization of networks with identical nodes to the case of nonidentical nodes. The controlled synchronization problem is also studied. The control action, which is subject to certain constraints, is viewed as reorganization of the connection topology of the network. Abstract: In this paper, a suitable model of distributed supply-chains (DSCs) is presented with the aim of providing a tool for DSC decentralised optimisation. Abstract: Optimization in dynamic environments is important in real-world applications, which requires the optimization algorithms to be able to find and track the changing optimum efficiently over time. Among various algorithms for dynamic optimization, particle swarm optimization algorithms (PSOs) are attracting more and more attentions in recent years, due to their ability of keeping good balance between convergence and diversity maintenance. To tackle the challenges of dynamic optimization, several strategies have been proposed to enhance the performance of PSO, and have gained success on various dynamic optimization problems. But there still exist some issues in dynamic optimization which need to be studied carefully, i.e. the robustness of the algorithm to problems of various dynamic features. In this paper, a new multi-strategy ensemble particle swarm optimization (MEPSO) for dynamic optimization is proposed. In MEPSO, all particles are divided into two parts, denoted as part I and part II, respectively. Two new strategies, Gaussian local search and differential mutation, are introduced into these two parts, respectively. Experimental analyses reveal that the mechanisms used in part I can enhance the convergence ability of the algorithm, while mechanisms used in part II can extend the searching area of the particle population to avoid being trapped into the local optimum, and can enhance the ability of catching up with the changing optimum in dynamic environments. The whole algorithm has few parameters that need to be tuned, and all of them are not sensitive to problems. We compared MEPSO with other PSOs, including MQSO, PHPSO and Standard PSO with re-initialization, on moving peaks Benchmark and dynamic Rastrigin function. The experimental results show that MEPSO has pretty good performance on almost all testing problems adopted in this paper, and outperforms other algorithms when the dynamic environment is unimodal and changes severely, or has a great number of local optima as dynamic Rastrigin function does. In this paper, a novel optimization technique is proposed to optimize filter coefficients of linear phase finite-impulse response (FIR) filter to share common subexpressions within and among coefficients. Existing approaches of common subexpression elimination optimize digital filters in two stages: first, an FIR filter is designed in a discrete space such as finite wordlength space or signed power-of-two (SPT) space to meet a given specification; in the second stage, an optimization algorithm is applied on the discrete coefficients to find and eliminate the common subexpressions. Such a two-stage optimization technique suffers from the problem that the search space in the second stage is limited by the finite wordlength or SPT coefficients obtained in the first stage optimization. The new proposed algorithm overcomes this problem by optimizing the filter coefficients directly in subexpression space for a given specification. Numerical examples of benchmark filters show that the required number of adders obtained using the proposed algorithm is much less than those obtained using two-stage optimization approaches. In this paper, the problem of maximizing power-system loadability with multiple complementarity constraints representing generator limits is examined. The structure of the loadability surface is investigated, the various type of limits are classified and a general algorithm to optimize settings of control variables, in order to maximize loadability margin is developed. The importance of nonsmooth corner points (CPs) of the loadability surface that are due to the simultaneous occurrence of several loadability conditions is discussed. At such limits, maximization, of loadability margin is performed based on techniques provided by nonlinear optimization theory. Variable digital filters (VDFs) are useful for various signal processing and communication applications where the frequency characteristics, such as fractional delays and cutoff frequencies, can be varied online. In this paper, we investigate the design of VDFs with discrete coefficients as a means of achieving low complexity and efficient hardware implementation. The filter coefficients are expressed as the sum of signed power-of-two terms with a restriction on the total number of power-of-two for the filter coefficients. An efficient design procedure is proposed that includes an improved method for handling the quantization of the VDF coefficients for both the mm-max and the least-square criteria leading to an optimum quantized solution. For the least-square criterion, a reduced search region around the optimum quantized solution is further constructed and the branch and bound method in conjunction with an efficient branch cutting scheme is presented to search for an optimum solution in this reduced region. Continuous-time (CT) sigma-delta (ΣΔ) modulators are growing increasingly popular in wide-band analog-digital conversion. High orders of quantization noise shaping, and multibit quantizers, are used to compensate for the low oversampling ratios in wide-band applications. These, however, add circuit complexities and excess loop delay that are detrimental to the ΣΔ control loop. This paper presents an exact mathematical analysis technique, based on the CT-discrete time equivalence, that can take these effects into account. A design-by-optimization approach based on that analysis is used to compensate for these effects, avoid intractability issues and to gain flexibility in the design. Abstract: In this paper, the H ∞ analysis problem is studied for a general class of nonlinear stochastic systems with time-delay. The stochastic systems are described in terms of stochastic functional differential equations. The Razumikhin-type lemma is employed to establish sufficient conditions for the time-delay stochastic systems to be internally stable, and the H ∞ analysis problem is studied in order to quantify the disturbance rejection attenuation level of the nonlinear stochastic time-delay system. In particular, the paper obtains the general conditions under which the L 2 gain of the system is less than or equal to a given constant. Some easy-to-test criteria are also given so as to determine whether the nonlinear stochastic time-delay system under investigation is internally stable and whether it achieves certain H ∞ performance index. This paper focuses on enhancing feature selection (FS) performance on a classification data set. First, a novel FS criterion using the concept of Bayesian discriminant is introduced. The proposed criterion is able to measure the classification ability of a feature set (or, a combination of the weighted features) in a direct way. This guarantees excellent FS results. Second, FS is conducted by optimizing the newly derived criterion in a continuous space instead of by heuristically searching features in a discrete feature space. Using this optimizing strategy, FS efficiency can be significantly improved. In this study, the proposed supervised FS scheme is compared with other related methods on different classification problems in which the number of features ranges from 33 to over 12,000. Nullnorms are generalization of triangular norms and triangular conorms with a zero element in the interior of the unit interval. In this paper, we generalize nullnorms to an arbitrary bounded lattices. We show the existence of nullnorms with zero element a for arbitrary element a ∈ L \{0, 1} using the fact that some t-norms and t-conorms on an arbitrary fixed bounded lattice L always exist. As a by-product we give a method of constructing nullnorms. Using this method, we obtain also the smallest nullnorm and the greatest nullnorm with given zero element a . In this paper, we propose a new fuzzy interpolative reasoning method for sparse fuzzy rule-based systems based on ranking values of polygonal fuzzy sets and automatically generated weights of fuzzy rules. First, the proposed method gets the characteristic points of the observation polygonal fuzzy sets and the characteristic points of the antecedent polygonal fuzzy sets of the fuzzy rules, respectively, by using the α-cut operations, respectively, where α ∈ [0, 1]. Then, it calculates the ranking value of each observation polygonal fuzzy set and the ranking value of each antecedent polygonal fuzzy set, respectively. Then, it calculates the difference between the ranking value of each observation polygonal fuzzy set and the ranking value of each antecedent polygonal fuzzy set. Then, it calculates the weight of each fuzzy rule based on the obtained differences between the ranking values of the observation polygonal fuzzy sets and the ranking values of the antecedent polygonal fuzzy sets. Then, based on the obtained characteristic points of the observation polygonal fuzzy sets, the obtained characteristic points of the antecedent polygonal fuzzy sets, and the obtained weights of the fuzzy rules, it gets the characteristic points of the fuzzy interpolative reasoning result represented by a polygonal fuzzy set. Many real incidents demonstrate that users of Online Social Networks need mechanisms that help them manage their interactions by increasing the awareness of the different contexts that coexist in Online Social Networks and preventing them from exchanging inappropriate information in those contexts or disseminating sensitive information from some contexts to others. Contextual integrity is a privacy theory that conceptualises the appropriateness of information sharing based on the contexts in which this information is to be shared. Computational models of Contextual Integrity assume the existence of well-defined contexts, in which individuals enact pre-defined roles and information sharing is governed by an explicit set of norms. However, contexts in Online Social Networks are known to be implicit, unknown a priori and ever changing; users relationships are constantly evolving; and the information sharing norms are implicit. This makes current Contextual Integrity models not suitable for Online Social Networks. In this paper, we propose the first computational model of Implicit Contextual Integrity, presenting an information model for Implicit Contextual Integrity as well as a so-called Information Assistant Agent that uses the information model to learn implicit contexts, relationships and the information sharing norms in order to help users avoid inappropriate information exchanges and undesired information disseminations. Through an experimental evaluation, we validate the properties of the model proposed. In particular, Information Assistant Agents are shown to: (i) infer the information sharing norms even if a small proportion of the users follow the norms and in presence of malicious users; (ii) help reduce the exchange of inappropriate information and the dissemination of sensitive information with only a partial view of the system and the information received and sent by their users; and (iii) minimise the burden to the users in terms of raising unnecessary alerts. Two primary properties of complex networks, controllability and modularity not only are closely related to each other, but also play an important role in understanding the networks’ characteristics. In this paper, we discuss an elastic model to enhance the control of undirected networks and study the controllability of random networks with built-in gradually varied modularity as well as real-world networks to elaborate the correlation between the networks’ controllability and modularity. The results show that it is easier to control the networks with stronger modularity than that of weaker modularity, and the networks with larger size communities probably need more driver nodes to control than that of smaller size communities when we fix both the number of nodes and the number of links of the networks. In addition, the robustness analysis indicates that the model enhances the resistance of networks against link failure. This work shows that the controllability of complex networks is highly associated with the networks’ degree distribution as well as the networks’ modularity, which gives a new insight into the understanding of controllability and modularity of complex networks. In this paper, we first discuss some properties of residuum and deresiduum of a binary operation on a complete lattice. Then, we investigate the relations between residuum and deresiduum. Finally, we demonstrate how each individual logical character of a right infinitely ∧-distributive implication, such as the law of importation, the weak exchangeability principle, the exchange principle, the contrapositive symmetry and the contraction law, can be translated into a property of its deresiduum. The Intelligent Water Drop (IWD) algorithm is a recent stochastic swarm-based method that is useful for solving combinatorial and function optimization problems. In this paper, we propose an IWD ensemble known as the Master-River, Multiple-Creek IWD (MRMC-IWD) model, which serves as an extension of the modified IWD algorithm. The MRMC-IWD model aims to improve the exploration capability of the modified IWD algorithm. It comprises a master river which cooperates with multiple independent creeks to undertake optimization problems based on the divide-and-conquer strategy. A technique to decompose the original problem into a number of sub-problems is first devised. Each sub-problem is then assigned to a creek, while the overall solution is handled by the master river. To empower the exploitation capability, a hybrid MRMC-IWD model is introduced. It integrates the iterative improvement local search method with the MRMC-IWD model to allow a local search to be conducted, therefore enhancing the quality of solutions provided by the master river. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed models, a series of experiments pertaining to two combinatorial problems, i.e., the travelling salesman problem (TSP) and rough set feature subset selection (RSFS), are conducted. The results indicate that the MRMC-IWD model can satisfactorily solve optimization problems using the divide-and-conquer strategy. By incorporating a local search method, the resulting hybrid MRMC-IWD model not only is able to balance exploration and exploitation, but also to enable convergence towards the optimal solutions, by employing a local search method. In all seven selected TSPLIB problems, the hybrid MRMC-IWD model achieves good results, with an average deviation of 0.021% from the best known optimal tour lengths. Compared with other state-of-the-art methods, the hybrid MRMC-IWD model produces the best results (i.e. the shortest and uniform reducts of 20 runs) for all13 selected RSFS problems. Measuring the similarity between two instances reliably, shape or image, is a challenging problem in shape and image retrieval. In this paper, a simple yet effective method called Neighbor Set Similarity (NSS) is proposed, which is superior to both traditional pairwise similarity and diffusion process. NSS makes full use of contextual information to capture the geometry of the underlying manifold, and obtains a more precise measure than the original pairwise similarity. Moreover, based on NSS, we propose a powerful fusion process to utilize the complementarity of different descriptors to further enhance the retrieval performance. The experimental results on MPEG-7 shape dataset, N-S image dataset and ORL face dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. In this paper, we propose two novel methods viz., counterpropagation auto-associative neural network (CPAANN) and grey system theory (GST) hybridised with CPAANN for data imputation. The effectiveness of these methods is demonstrated on 12 datasets and the results are compared with that of various extant methods. Wilcoxon signed rank test conducted at 1% level of significance, indicated that the proposed methods are statistically significant against all methods. The spectacular success of CPAANN can be attributed to the local learning, global approximation and auto-association that take place in tandem in a single architecture. Furthermore, significantly CPAANN turned out to be the best in the class of AANN architectures used for imputation. This paper presents two mathematical models representing imprecise capacitated fixed-charge transportation problems for a two-stage supply chain network in Gaussian fuzzy type-2 environment. It is a two-stage transportation process from a manufacturing center to m potential distribution centers (DCs) and then from DCs to business centers of n retailers with particular demands. Retailers are situated at some distances apart. Here unit transportation costs, fixed charges, availabilities, and demands are imprecise and represented by Gaussian type-2 fuzzy numbers. The proposed models are formulated as profit maximization problems in such a way that some DCs are selected in order to satisfy the demands at all retailers. The type-2 fuzziness has been removed by using generalized credibility measure developed with the help of CV-based reduction method and hence the models are reduced to chance constrained programming problems with different credibility labels. The deterministic models are then solved using both genetic algorithm (GA) based on Roulette wheel selection, arithmetic crossover with uniform mutation and modified particle swarm optimization (PSO), where the position of each particle is adjusted according to its own experience and that of its neighbors. Although various efficient indexing techniques have been proposed to improve the performance in distributing road data to mobile clients to perform shortest path searches on road networks, how to minimize the tune-in and path searching costs are still important performance goals since the clients usually have limited processing capability and energy supply. In this paper, based on the Next Region ( NR ) approach, we propose a new method called Approximate Path Searching (APS) for constructing the broadcast index at mobile clients with soft arrival times to destinations. APS adopts an approximation technique in calculating the sets of required regions for each region pair in a road network to reduce the index generation cost at the road server and the tune-in and path searching costs at the clients. Different from NR , which only provides one set of required regions containing the shortest path from a client’s start region to its destination region, APS generates n -sets of required regions for a client to choose. Each set of required regions contains different numbers of regions. Although choosing a smaller region set may give a slightly longer delay in arrival, the tune-in and path searching costs could be significantly reduced. Theoretical analysis and extensive simulation experiments have been performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of APS in improving the system performance with just a few percentages delay in arrival time on average comparing with NR using data sets from real road networks. Sparse representation based reconstruction methods are efficient for single image super resolution. They generally consist of the code stage and the linear combination stage. However, the simple linear combination has not considered the image edge constraint information of image, and hence the classical sparse representation based methods reconstruct the image with the unwanted edge artifacts and the unsharp edges. In this paper, considering that the local rank is able to extract better edge information than other edge operator, we propose a new single image super resolution method by combining the sparse representation and the local rank constraint information. In our method, we first learn the local rank of the HR image via the traditional sparse representation model, and then use it as the edge constraint to restrict the image edges during the linear combination stage to reconstruct the HR image. Furthermore, we propose a nonlocal and global optimization model to further improve the HR image quality. A number of different analytical and numerical methods have previously been proposed to identify and control systems with unknown delay. The methods have been based on the Smith Predictor for the stable case and on modified Smith predictor, for the unstable and integrating case. Among the proposed optimization techniques, the pattern-search-based method besides its computational advantage, provides better accuracy compared to other methods. However, the response of the methods under step input in some case is deficient. This paper presents an improved Generalized Pattern Search Method (GPSM) based optimization technique, where new updates ways are proposed. The proposed GPSM algorithm uses a simple structure based on the feedback of fitness value in the process. It provides better performance for delay identification and a reference tracking. Comparisons with existing methods for delay estimation are presented using both synthetic and experimental data under various conditions. In this paper, the element free Galerkin method (EFG) is proposed for topology optimization of cracked structures using the bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization method (BESO). The mathematical formulation of the topology optimization is developed considering the nodal strain energy as the design variable and the minimization of compliance as the objective function. The element free Galerkin method is enriched by the crack-tip enrichment functions to increase the approximation accuracy near the crack-tip. The Lagrange multiplier method is employed to enforce the essential boundary conditions. Several numerical examples are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Many issues related to topology optimization of cracked structures such as the effects of crack size and location on the optimal topology are addressed in the examples. In some real-world decision processes, decision makers may prefer to provide their opinions using linguistic expressions instead of a single linguistic term. Particularly, they may hesitate between several linguistic terms. In this paper, we deal with the consensus issue in the hesitant linguistic group decision making (GDM) problem. Firstly, a novel distance-based consensus measure is proposed. Then, using this consensus measure we develop an optimization-based consensus model in the hesitant linguistic GDM, which minimizes the number of adjusted simple terms in the consensus building. Furthermore, a two-stage model is displayed to further optimize the solutions to the proposed consensus model, through which we obtain the unique optimal adjustment suggestion to support the consensus reaching process in the hesitant linguistic GDM. This paper presents a Gaussian classifier-based evolutionary strategy (GCES) to solve multimodal optimization problems. An evolutionary technique for them must answer two crucial questions to guarantee its success: how to distinguish among the different basins of attraction and how to safeguard the already discovered good-quality solutions including both global and local optima. In GCES, multimodal optimization problems are regarded as classification ones, and Gaussian mixture models are employed to save the locations and basins of already and presently identified local or global optima. A sequential estimation technique for the covariance of a Gaussian model is introduced into GCES. To best adjust the global step size, a strategy named top-ranked sample selection is introduced, and a classification method instead of a common but problematic radius-triggered manner is proposed. Experiments are performed on a series of benchmark test functions to compare GCES with the state-of-the-art multimodal optimization approaches. This work deals with the analysis and the design of minimum-time control laws for a class of nonlinear discrete-time dynamical systems characterized by \cal K-continuous transition maps and bounded control inputs. In the paper, it is shown that the reachability properties of the target set, even if not robust positively controllable in one state transition, can be exploited to assess the existence of a robust positively controllable set including the target in its interior. This result allows the formulation of a robustified minimum-time control policy, based on iterated online optimizations and guaranteeing the ultimate boundedness of the state-trajectories in the presence of bounded uncertainties, even if the target set is not robust positively controllable. Abstract: Organizations can implement the agility required to survive in the rapidly evolving business landscape by focusing on their core business and engaging in collaborations with other partners. This entails the need for organizations to monitor the behavior of the partners with which they collaborate. The design and enactment of monitoring, in this scenario, must become flexible and adapt as the collaboration evolves. We propose an approach to flexibly design and enact cross-organizational business process monitoring based on Product-Based Workflow Design. Our approach allows organizations to capture monitoring requirements, optimize such requirements, e.g. choosing the monitoring process with lowest cost or highest availability, and enacting the optimal monitoring process through a service-oriented approach. Optimization, in particular, is made efficient by adopting an Ant-colony optimization heuristic. The paper also describes a prototypical implementation of our approach in the ProM framework. Abstract: This paper is a brief survey on the existing problems and challenges inherent in model-based control (MBC) theory, and some important issues in the analysis and design of data-driven control (DDC) methods are here reviewed and addressed. The necessity of data-driven control is discussed from the aspects of the history, the present, and the future of control theories and applications. The state of the art of the existing DDC methods and applications are presented with appropriate classifications and insights. The relationship between the MBC method and the DDC method, the differences among different DDC methods, and relevant topics in data-driven optimization and modeling are also highlighted. Abstract: In this paper, a novel biologically-inspired algorithm, namely krill herd (KH) is proposed for solving optimization tasks. The KH algorithm is based on the simulation of the herding behavior of krill individuals. The minimum distances of each individual krill from food and from highest density of the herd are considered as the objective function for the krill movement. The time-dependent position of the krill individuals is formulated by three main factors: (i) movement induced by the presence of other individuals (ii) foraging activity, and (iii) random diffusion. For more precise modeling of the krill behavior, two adaptive genetic operators are added to the algorithm. The proposed method is verified using several benchmark problems commonly used in the area of optimization. Further, the KH algorithm is compared with eight well-known methods in the literature. Abstract: In practical optimization problems, disturbances to a given instance are unavoidable due to unpredictable events which can occur when the system is running. In order to face these situations, many approaches have been proposed during the last years in the area of robust optimization. The basic idea of robustness is to provide a solution which can be used even if the input instance is disturbed, at the cost of optimality. However, the notion of robustness in every day life is much broader than that pursued in the area of robust optimization so far. In practice it is reasonable to consider a solution as robust, if a recovery strategy is available that can be applied when disturbing events occur in order to adapt the solution to the new situation. This suggests to study robustness and recoverability in a unified framework. Recently, a first tentative of unifying the notions of robustness and recoverability into a new integrated notion of recoverable robustness has been done in the context of railway optimization, see . Although this model represents a significant improvement, it has the following drawback: typically there is not only one disruption, but many of them might appear one after another. In this case, the solutions provided within the recoverable robustness are not satisfying. In this paper we extend the concept of recoverable robustness to deal not only with one single recovery step, but with many recovery steps. Abstract: Obtaining an optimal solution for a permutation flowshop scheduling problem with the total flowtime criterion in a reasonable computational timeframe using traditional approaches and optimization tools has been a challenge. This paper presents a discrete artificial bee colony algorithm hybridized with a variant of iterated greedy algorithms to find the permutation that gives the smallest total flowtime. Iterated greedy algorithms are comprised of local search procedures based on insertion and swap neighborhood structures. In the same context, we also consider a discrete differential evolution algorithm from our previous work. The performance of the proposed algorithms is tested on the well-known benchmark suite of Taillard. The highly effective performance of the discrete artificial bee colony and hybrid differential evolution algorithms is compared against the best performing algorithms from the existing literature in terms of both solution quality and CPU times. Ultimately, 44 out of the 90 best known solutions provided very recently by the best performing estimation of distribution and genetic local search algorithms are further improved by the proposed algorithms with short-term searches. Abstract: Increasing attention is being paid to solve constrained optimization problems (COP) frequently encountered in real-world applications. In this paper, an improved vector particle swarm optimization (IVPSO) algorithm is proposed to solve COPs. The constraint-handling technique is based on the simple constraint-preserving method. Velocity and position of each particle, as well as the corresponding changes, are all expressed as vectors in order to present the optimization procedure in a more intuitively comprehensible manner. The NVPSO algorithm , which uses one-dimensional search approaches to find a new feasible position on the flying trajectory of the particle when it escapes from the feasible region, has been proposed to solve COP. Experimental results showed that searching only on the flying trajectory for a feasible position influenced the diversity of the swarm and thus reduced the global search capability of the NVPSO algorithm. In order to avoid neglecting any worthy position in the feasible region and improve the optimization efficiency, a multi-dimensional search algorithm is proposed to search within a local region for a new feasible position. The local region is composed of all dimensions of the escaped particle’s parent and the current positions. Obviously, the flying trajectory of the particle is also included in this local region. The new position is not only present in the feasible region but also has a better fitness value in this local region. The performance of IVPSO is tested on 13 well-known benchmark functions.
