To identify and compare the rates of cannula-associated deep vein thrombosis (CaDVT) in patients on venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) who receive systemic anticoagulation (AC) and those who do not receive AC. Retrospective observational study. Tertiary academic medical center. Consecutive patients who successfully have been decannulated from VV-ECMO for treatment of refractory acute respiratory distress syndrome between 2017 and 2022. None. After decannulation of ECMO, a duplex sonograph was performed on the cannulation sites to determine the incidence and characteristics of cannula-related thrombosis. Thrombosis was classified as occlusive or nearly occlusive. Ninety-four of 161 patients were weaned from VV-ECMO. Nineteen patients who were placed on VV-ECMO due to COVID-19 were excluded. Twenty-seven of 52 patients (52%) who did not receive AC were identified to have thrombus. Twelve of 23 patients (52%) who received AC were identified to have thrombus. Patients who received AC required more blood products during the ECMO run and required longer support on VV-ECMO. This study showed a high incidence of cannula-related venous thrombosis after VV-ECMO decannulation. Surprisingly, the incidence of CaDVT in anticoagulation-free patients was the same as in patients requiring anticoagulation. Anticoagulated patients required longer support on VV-ECMO and required more transfusions. Routine post-decannulation screening for DVT is recommended due to the high incidence of CaDVT. The number of electrophysiology (EP) procedures being performed has dramatically increased in recent years. This escalation necessitates a full understanding by the general anesthesiologist as to the risks, specific considerations, and comorbidities that accompany these now common procedures. Procedures reviewed in this article include atrial fibrillation and flutter ablation, supraventricular tachycardia ablation, ventricular tachycardia ablation, electrical cardioversion, pacemaker insertion, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) insertion, and ICD lead extraction. General anesthetic considerations as well as procedure-specific concerns are discussed. Remotely located offshore wind farms (OWFs) are usually in unmanned operation, and are severely at risk from accidental or deliberate man-made damages, such as cable faults caused by vessel anchoring. In this work, a proactive alarming and interception method utilising unmanned surface vehicles (USV) is proposed to prevent suspect vessels from intruding OWF areas and damaging the assets. More specifically, the vessel intrusion interception system keeps monitoring the motion of surrounding vessels and assessing their potential intrusive risks. When a suspect intruder is identified, USV will be automatically deployed to proactively intercept the target vessel with an alarming and expelling system. In particular, a risk assessment model based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy weight method (EWM) is established to predict the potential intrusive risk, and an improved fast marching square (FMS) algorithm is designed for USV path planning to guarantee dynamic and reliable vessel interception. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, case studies have been conducted for the Zhejiang Jiaxing 2 OWF with authentic vessel traffic data. O3-type layered oxide cathodes are primarily limited by complex phase transitions and sluggish kinetics resulting in rapid capacity drop and poor rate capability. Even worse, its inherent air sensitivity leads to spontaneous extraction of lattice Na-ions and the deactivation of the cathode. Simultaneous modification of both the bulk phase and the surface structure is promising to offset the above deficiencies. A spinel@O3 type layered composite structure Na 0.9 Mn 0.5 Ni 0.5 Cu 0.1 O 2+x (NMNCO-SL) was constructed for the design of cathodes with higher cycling, rate and air stability. The atomic-level Cu-rich spinel structure on the surface was identified by scanning transmission electron microscopy, elemental linear scanning analysis and Raman spectra. In situ charge-discharge X-ray diffraction results show that the phase transition of NMNCO-SL is significantly suppressed. Finally, the material maintains good electrochemical properties after exposure to stringent humidity environments. The results indicate that the spinel structure at the surface plays a significant role in improving ion-diffusion dynamics, enhancing structural integrity, and increasing air stability. 1 Ah pouch cell based on NMNCO-SL showed 92% capacity retention after 500 cycles of charge/discharge cycling at 1 C, demonstrating the potential prospects of customizing the surface phase structure for materials engineering applications. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), known for their health risks, are prevalent in the environment, with the coking industry being a major source of their emissions. To bridge the knowledge gap concerning the relationship between environmental and dietary PAH exposure, we explore this complex interplay by investigating the dietary exposure characteristics of 24 PAHs within a typical Chinese coking plant and their association with environmental pollution. Our research revealed Nap and Fle as primary dietary contaminants, emphasizing the significant influence of soil and atmospheric pollution on PAH exposure. We subjected our data to non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS), Spearman correlation analysis, Lasso regression, and Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression to delve into this multifaceted phenomenon. NMDS reveals that dietary PAH exposure, especially within the high molecular weight (HMW) group, is common both within and around the coking plant. This suggests that meals prepared within the plant may be contaminated, posing health risks to coking plant workers. Furthermore, our assessment of dietary exposure risk highlights Nap and Fle as the primary dietary contaminants, with BaP and DahA raising concerns due to their higher carcinogenic potential. Our findings indicate that dietary exposure often exceeds acceptable limits, particularly for coking plant workers. Correlation analyses uncover the dominant roles of soil and atmospheric pollution in shaping dietary PAH exposure. Soil contamination significantly impacts specific PAHs, while atmospheric pollution contributes to others. Additionally, WQS regression emphasizes the substantial influence of soil and drinking water on dietary PAHs. In summary, our study sheds light on the dietary exposure characteristics of PAHs in a typical Chinese coking plant and their intricate interplay with environmental factors. As an emerging form of pollution, microplastic contamination of the coastal ecosystems is one of the world's most pressing environmental concerns. Coastal sediments have been polluted to varying degrees by microplastics, and their ubiquitous presence in sediments poses a threat to marine organisms. However, there is currently no ecological risk assessment of microplastics on aquatic biota in sediments. This study, for the first time, established a new procedure to evaluate the toxicity of microplastics on aquatic biota in sediments, based on the probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) concept. The choice of Zhelin Bay as the case study site was based on its severe pollution status. The average content of microplastics in the sediments of Zhelin Bay was 2054.17 items kg−1 dry weight, and these microplastics consisted of 46 different species. Microplastics in sediments exist in five different forms, with the film form being the main composition, and the majority of microplastics have particle sizes ranging from 100 to 500 μm. Correlation analysis (CA) reveals significant negative correlations between microplastic abundance, and Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2. The toxicity of microplastics, based on the PRA concept, suggests that Zhelin Bay surface sediments had a low probability (3.43%) of toxic effects on aquatic biota. Rationale and Objectives: The sonographic appearance of benign and malignant breast nodules overlaps to some extent, and we aimed to assess the performance of the Gail model as an adjunctive tool to ultrasound (US) Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) for predicting the malignancy of nodules.Materials and Methods: From 2018 to 2019, 2607 patients were prospectively enrolled by 35 health care facilities. An individual breast cancer risk was assessed by the Gail model. Based on B-mode US, color Doppler, and elastography, all nodules were evaluated according to the fifth edition of BI-RADS, and these nodules were all confirmed later by pathology.Results: We demonstrated that the Gail model, age, tumor size, tumor shape, growth orientation, margin, contour, acoustic shadowing, microcalcification, presence of duct ectasia, presence of architectural distortion, color Doppler flow, BI-RADS, and elastography score were significantly related to breast cancer (all p < 0.001). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, accuracy, and area under the curve (AUC) for combining the Gail model with the BI-RADS category were 95.6%, 91.3%, 85.0%, 97.6%, 92.8%, and 0.98, respectively. Combining the Gail model with the BI-RADS showed better diagnostic efficiency than the BI-RADS and Gail model alone (AUC 0.98 vs 0.80, p < 0.001; AUC 0.98 vs 0.55, p < 0.001) and demonstrated a higher specificity than the BI-RADS (91.3% vs 59.4%, p < 0.001).Conclusion: The Gail model could be used to differentiate malignant and benign breast lesions. Combined with the BI-RADS category, the Gail model was adjunctive to US for predicting breast lesions for malignancy. Rationale and Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of the fifth edition of the Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) in clinical breast radiology by using prospective multicenter real-time analyses of ultrasound (US) images.Materials and Methods: We prospectively studied 2049 female patients (age range, 19-86 years; mean age 46.88 years) with BI-RADS category 4 breast masses in 32 tertiary hospitals. All the patients underwent B-mode, color Doppler US, and US elastography examination. US features of the mass and associated features were described and categorized according to the fifth edition of the BI-RADS US lexicon. The pathological results were used as the reference standard. The positive predictive values (PPVs) of subcategories 4a-4c were calculated.Results: A total of 2094 masses were obtained, including 1124 benign masses (54.9%) and 925 malignant masses (45.1%). For BI-RADS US features of mass shape, orientation, margin, posterior features, calcifications, architectural distortion, edema, skin changes, vascularity, and elasticity assessment were significantly different for benign and malignant masses (p< 0.05). Typical signs of malignancy were irregular shape (PPV, 57.2%), spiculated margin (PPV, 83.7%), nonparallel orientation (PPV, 63.9%), and combined pattern of posterior features (PPV, 60.6%). For the changed or newly added US features, the PPVs for intraductal calcifications were 80%, 56.4% for internal vascularity, and 80% for a hard pattern on elastography. The associated features such as architectural distortion (PPV, 89.3%), edema (PPV, 69.2%), and skin changes (PPV, 76.2%) displayed high predictive value for malignancy. The rate of malignant was 7.4% (72/975) in category 4a, 61.4% (283/461) in category 4b, and 93.0% (570/613) in category 4c. The PPV for category 4b was higher than the likelihood ranges specified in BI-RADS and the PPVs for categories 4a and 4c were within the acceptable performance ranges specified in the fifth edition of BI-RADS in our study.Conclusion: Not only the US features of the breast mass, but also associated features, including vascularity and elasticity assessment, have become an indispensable part of the fifth edition of BI-RADS US lexicon to distinguish benign and malignant breast lesions. Zinc tin oxide (ZTO) thin films can be deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) with adjustable electrical, optical and structural properties. However, the ternary ALD processes usually suffer from low growth rate and difficulty in controlling film thickness and elemental composition, due to the interaction of ZnO and SnO 2 processes. In this work, ZTO thin films with different Sn levels are prepared by ALD super cycles using diethylzinc, tetrakis(dimethylamido)tin, and water. It is observed that both the film growth rate and atom composition show nonlinear variation versus [Sn]/([Sn]+[Zn]) cycle ratio. The experimental thickness measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry and X-ray reflectivity are much lower than the expected thickness linearly interpolated from pure ZnO and SnO x films. The [Sn]/([Sn]+[Zn]) atom ratios estimated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have higher values than that expected from the cycle ratios. Hence, to characterize the film growth behavior versus cycle ratio, a numerical method is proposed by simulating the effect of reduced density and reactivity of surface hydroxyls and surface etching reactions. The structure, electrical and optical properties of ZTO with different Sn levels are also examined by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscope, Hall measurements and ultraviolet–visible–infrared transmittance spectroscopy. The ZTO turns out to be transparent nanocrystalline or amorphous films with smooth surface. With more Sn contents, the film resistivity gets higher (>1 Ω cm) and the optical bandgap rises from 3.47 to 3.83 eV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional Chinese medicine prescription sini decoction (SND) can alleviate inflammation, improve microcirculation, and modulate immune status in sepsis patients. However, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear, and therapeutic effects may vary among individuals. Through a comprehensive and systematic network pharmacology analysis, the purpose of this study is to investigate the therapeutic mechanisms of SND in treating sepsis. An analysis of WGCNA identified CX3CR1 as a key gene influencing sepsis prognosis. A drug-active component-target network for SND was created using the traditional Chinese medicine systems pharmacology (TCMSP) database and Cytoscape software. Shared targets between SND and CX3CR1 high-expression gene modules were found through the GEO database. Gene module functionality was analyzed using GO, KEGG, GSEA, and GSVA. Unsupervised clustering of sepsis patients was performed based on the ferroptosis gene set, and immune cell interactions and mechanisms were explored using CIBERSORT, single-cell sequencing, and intercellular communication analysis. This study demonstrates that high expression of CX3CR1 improves survival rates in sepsis patients and is associated with immune cell signaling pathways. SND contains 116 active components involved in oxidative stress and lipid metabolism pathways. HMOX1, a co-expressed gene in SND and CX3CR1 high-expression gene module, plays a crucial role in sepsis survival. Unsupervised clustering analysis classified sepsis patients into three clusters based on the ferroptosis gene set, revealing differences in immune cell expression and involvement in heme metabolism pathways. Notably, intercellular interactions among immune cells primarily occur through paracrine and autocrine mechanisms in MIF, GALECTIN, and IL16 signaling pathways, modulating the immune-inflammatory microenvironment in sepsis. This study identifies CX3CR1 as a crucial molecule impacting sepsis prognosis through WGCNA analysis. It reveals that SND's active component, quercetin and kaempferol, target HMOX1 via related pathways to regulate heme metabolism, reduce inflammation, inhibit ferroptosis, and improve immune function, ultimately improving sepsis prognosis. Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging contaminants due to their worldwide exploitation in the high-technology sector. Aquaculture systems, particularly those located within coastal areas, are fragile ecosystems due to anthropogenic impacts regarding urban and aquaculture activities. However, to date, there are no reports on the combined toxicity of rare earth element (REE) mixtures on aquatic biota in sediments from coastal aquaculture systems. In this study, the combined toxicity of REE mixtures based on probabilistic risk assessment indicated that the surface sediments of Zhelin Bay had a 1.86% probability of toxic effects on aquatic biota. The average value of total REEs (TREEs) was 297.37 μg/g, with light REEs representing the major part. A factor analysis (FA)-geographic information system (GIS)-based approach coupled with correlation analysis (CA) revealed that the REEs are derived from anthropogenic sources through fluvial processes. Bioenrichment preference of arsenic and metals in wild marine organisms has been scarcely considered. Twenty species including fishes, cephalopods, crustaceans, and bivalve mollusks were collected from Dapeng (Mis) Bay and analyzed for arsenic and metals. Through this study, we had obtained the following four main conclusions: (1) average concentrations of arsenic and metals (μg/kg, wet weight) in the aquatic organism samples were 48.7 for Cr, 1762.0 for Mn, 20,632.8 for Fe, 33.0 for Co, 119.5 for Ni, 3184.7 for Cu, 12,040.5 for Zn, 389.0 for As, 189.1 for Se, 144.4 for Cd, 15.0 for Hg, and 55.3 for Pb; (2) factor analysis (FA) revealed that the studied twenty species exhibited three types of arsenic and metal bioenrichment preference;(3) non-carcinogenic health risk assessment indicated insignificant health effects from marine organism consumption; (4) carcinogenic health risk assessment revealed an unacceptable risk from consumption of nine species, seven of which were crustaceans. Heavy metals (HMs) are routine contaminants due to their extensive use worldwide. Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging contaminants because of their global exploitation for use in the high-tech sector. Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) are an effective method for measuring the bioavailable component of pollutants. This study represents the first assessment of the mixture toxicity of HMs and REEs in aquatic biota using the DGT technique in sediments. Xincun Lagoon was chosen as the case study site because it has been contaminated by pollutants. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) analysis reveals that a wide variety of pollutants (Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu, InHg, Co, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) are primarily impacted by sediment characteristics. Appraisal of single HM-REE toxicity reveals that the risk quotient (RQ) values for Y, Yb and Ce notably exceeded 1, demonstrating that the adverse effects of these single HMs and REEs should not be ignored. The combined toxicity of HM-REE mixtures in terms of probabilistic ecological risk assessment shows that the Xincun surface sediments had a medium probability (31.29%) of toxic effects on aquatic biota. Aquaculture wetlands, particularly those located within urban areas, are fragile ecosystems due to urban and aquaculture impacts. However, to date, there are no reports on the combined toxicity of heavy metal mixtures in aquatic biota in sediments from aquaculture wetlands in metropolitan areas. Thus, the characterization, bioavailability, and ecological probability risk of heavy metals were studied in the riverine/estuarine sediments of the Rongjiang River in an aquaculture wetland in Chaoshan metropolis, South China. In the study area, the average total concentrations (mg/kg) were 2.38 (Cd), 113.40 (Pb), 88.27 (Cr), 148.25 (Ni), 62.08 (Cu), 125.18 (Zn), 45,636.44 (Fe), and 797.18 (Mn), with the Cd pollution being regarded as extremely serious based on the enrichment factor (EF). There are two main sources of heavy metals in the study area; Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe and Mn are mainly from domestic waste, while Cr, Cd and Cu are possibly associated with industrial production activities. The bioavailability of most heavy metals accounted for more than 20% of the total concentration. The combined toxicity of heavy metal mixtures based on probabilistic risk assessment suggests that the surface sediments of the Rongjiang River and its estuary had a 15.71% probability of toxic effects on aquatic biota. Rechargeable Li-CO 2 batteries provide a very promising approach to simultaneously solve energy shortage and the greenhouse effect. However, Li-CO 2 batteries are facing several shortcomings, especially the slow CO 2 oxidation and reduction kinetics, which deteriorate the energy efficiency and cycling life. Herein, IrO 2 /carbon fibers derived from kapok (IrO 2 /CK) are prepared via simple one-step carbonization and subsequent hydrothermal reaction. Benefitting from the favorable CO 2 reduction and evolution catalytic activities of the loaded IrO 2 nanoparticles, the enhanced electron transfer and reactants diffusion kinetics derived by the unique cross-linked hierarchical porous structure and the ample space for Li 2 CO 3 deposition, the fabricated Li-CO 2 battery, IrO 2 /CK as the cathode, shows ultra-long operation time more than 4000 h. More importantly, the cathode exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility conferred by the kapok, which can maintain the original structure during bending. The pouch-type flexible Li-CO 2 battery with IrO 2 /CK cathode can steadily operate for 300 h under different bending conditions. The booming coastal zone economy poses increasing anthropogenic threats to marine life and habitats. Using the endangered living fossil horseshoe crab (HSC) as an example, we quantified the intensity of various anthropogenic pressures along the coast of Hainan Island, China, and for the first time assessed their impact on the distribution of juvenile HSCs through a field survey, remote sensing, spatial geographic modeling, and machine learning methods. The results indicate that the Danzhou Bay needs to be protected as a priority based on species and anthropogenic pressure information. Aquaculture and port activities dramatically impact the density of HSCs and therefore be managed priority. Surface sediments from 21 stations within the Pearl River estuary (PRE) intertidal zone were sampled for heavy metal contamination analysis. Average heavy metal concentrations (mg/kg) in the PRE intertidal zone were 118.5 (Cr), 860.4 (Mn), 19.5 (Co), 72.5 (Ni), 128.1 (Cu), 198.5 (Zn), and 73.0 (Pb), with the concentrations of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn being significantly higher than their corresponding background values. The enrichment factor (EF) and geo-accumulation index (I geo) reveal the same contamination status, with Pb, Ni, Co, Mn, and Cu showing slight to moderate contamination. Overall, the combined heavy metal concentration in the PRE intertidal surface sediments had a 24.7 % probability of toxic effects on aquatic biota based on the joint probabilistic risk (JPR) approach. Heavy metals and pesticides (HMPs) are common contaminants due to their extensive use worldwide. Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) are a good method for measuring the bioavailable concentration of pollutants. This study represents the first evaluation of HMP toxicity in aquatic biota using the DGT technique in sediments. Zhelin Bay was selected as the case study site because it has been contaminated by pollutants. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMS) analysis reveals that a diverse range of pollutants (V, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, InHg, Mo, Cd, Sb, W, Pb, CLP, PYR) are mainly influenced by sediment characteristics. Assessment of single HMP toxicity found that the risk quotient (RQ) values for Mn, Cu, inorganic Hg (InHg), chlorpyrifos (CLP) and diuron (DIU) are significantly higher than 1, indicating that the adverse effects of these single HMPs should not be ignored. The combined toxicity of HMP mixtures based on probabilistic ecotoxicological risk assessment shows that Zhelin Bay surface sediments had a medium probability (54.6%) of toxic effects to aquatic biota. Vitamin D deficiency is a widespread health problem globally and vitamin D deficiency/ insufficiency in pregnancy is a risk factor for preeclampsia, a hypertensive disorder in human pregnancy. Vitamin D elicits its biological effects through binding to its receptor VDR. In the present study, we determined maternal vascular expression of VDR and hnRNPC1/C2, a native repressor of VDR, in subcutaneous adipose tissue from women with normal pregnancy and preeclampsia. Maternal antenatal and postnatal vitamin D levels were measured. We found that hnRNPC1/C2 expression was markedly increased, while VDR expression was markedly reduced, in maternal vessel endothelium and smooth muscle cells from women with preeclampsia compared to that from normal pregnant controls. Reduced VDR expression was relevant to low maternal antenatal and postnatal vitamin D levels in women with preeclampsia. Using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) as an endothelial model, we further investigated the role of hnRNPC1/C2-mediated VDR expression in endothelial cells, and tested effect of hnRNPC1/C2 inhibition on endothelial response to bioactive vitamin D, 1,25(OH) 2 D 3. Our results showed that inhibition of hnRNPC1/C2 by hnRNPC1/C2 siRNA resulted in not only an increase in endothelial VDR expression, but further improved endothelial response to 1,25(OH) 2 D 3. Known as burgeoning contaminants, the bioavailability of rare earth elements (REEs) can be determined using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT). As Daya Bay (South China) has been under serious anthropogenic influences, the present study examined the distribution of REEs in surface sediments and their possible ecological risks in the bay. The range of DGT-labile concentrations of REEs (∑REEs) was from 5.67 μg/L to 8.41 μg/L, with an average of 7.34 μg/L. Results of assessment of single REE toxicity revealed that the risk quotient (RQ) values of Y, Ce and Yb were >1, indicating that their potential negative impacts on the nearby environment. However, analysis of the integral toxicity of REE mixtures through assessment of probabilistic ecotoxicological risks showed that there was a negligibly low probability of toxicity of PRE surface sediments to aquatic organisms in the study area. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the major form of chronic liver disease in adults; however, there are no approved drugs for NASH. In this study, we designed the PNM-G-PV method, in which gelatin nanoparticles (G) are loaded with pioglitazone and vitamin E (G-PV) and then encapsulated by the surfaces of platelet–neutrophil hybrid membranes (PNM). Inherited from the natural source cells, the PNM show immune evading ability due to the surface marker comprising a number of "do not eat me" signals and has dual inflammatory enrichment capabilities due to specific surface adhesion molecules. By functionalizing the gelatin nanoparticle biomimetic surfaces, PNM-G can enhance the targeting to inflammatory sites and enrich liver tissue. The high expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) at the NASH site enables the gelatin nanoparticles to intelligently respond to degradation and then release vitamin E and pioglitazone for drug treatment. We performed an in vivo analysis of these nanoparticles to monitor changes in triacylglycerol metabolism in liver tissues and assessed the therapeutic efficacy of PNM-G-PV in a NASH rat model. The results showed that PNM-G-PV exhibited better therapeutic efficacy than therapies using G-PV or PV alone. This work explores a new biomedical use of PNM-G-PV and a promising NASH treatment protocol based on a new drug delivery system. • We determined the complete mitogenome of Ovalona pulchella in Chydoridae. • This is the first sequenced species of the family Chydoridae in Cladocera. • Data on O. pulchella are valuable for phylogenetic and evolutionary studies. • Mitochondrial genomes are highly conserved among different Branchiopoda species. Chydoridae are phytophilic-benthic microcrustaceans that make up a significant proportion of species diversity and play an important role in the littoral zone of freshwater ecosystems worldwide. Here, we provide the complete mitochondrial genome of Ovalona pulchella (King, 1853), determined by next-generation sequencing. The entire mitochondrial genome is 15,362 bp in length; this is the first sequenced mitochondrial genome in the family Chydoridae. The base composition and codon usage were typical of Cladocera species. The mitochondrial gene arrangement (37 genes) was not consistent with that of other Branchiopoda. Both maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses supported each suborder and family of Branchiopoda as monophyletic groups. The relationships among the families were as follows: [(Leptestheriidae + Limnadiidae) + (Sididae + (Bosminidae + (Chydoridae + Daphniidae)))] + Triopsidae. The newly sequenced O. pulchella was most closely related to the family Daphniidae. The complete mitochondrial genome of O. pulchella also provides valuable molecular information for further analysis of the phylogeny of the Chydoridae and the taxonomic status of the Branchiopoda. The presence of rare earth elements (REEs) in different trophic levels of wild fish species remains unknown. In this study, fish characteristics and distribution patterns of REEs at different trophic levels of wild fish species are studied for the first time. The northern coastal region of the South China Sea was selected as it has the highest fishing intensity in China. The concentrations of 15 REEs were measured in 14 marine wild fish species from this area. The total concentrations of REEs (ΣREEs) ranged from 1.02 to 178.55 μg/kg (wet weight). The average ratio of light REE (LREE) to heavy REE (HREE) was 13.04, indicating that the ∑REEs content was dominated by LREE. The distribution patterns demonstrated significant bioaccumulation of LREEs. The REE patterns of most of the fish species showed Ce, Gd, Tb, and Dy anomalies. The surface intertidal sediments in the Pearl River Estuary of China were analyzed from multiple perspectives, including the distribution characteristics, potential sources, and biological risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The average concentration of PAHs, ranging from 73.68 ng/g to 933.25 ng/g, was 346.78 ng/g. PAHs are mainly composed of the 2- and 3-ring PAHs, with naphthalene (Nap), phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr), benzo(g,h, i) perylene (Dib), fluoranthene (Flua), and indeno (1,2,3-c,d) pyrene (Ind) as the dominant constituents. The principal component analysis combined with multiple linear regression showed that petroleum combustion and biomass/coal combustion have contributed 52.78% and 40.53%, respectively, to the PAHs in intertidal sediments of Pearl River Estuary. The occurrence of adverse biological effects as a result of PAH contamination in the intertidal sediments of Pearl River Estuary has increased by 8% based on the mean value of the probable effect quotient. Hydrological variation is well-known to affect the morphological plasticity of aquatic macrophytes; however, whether these responses are size-dependent ("apparent plasticity") or not ("real plasticity") remains unclear, particularly with respect to the water exchange rate (WER). Here, we used allometric analysis to investigate the morphological plasticity and the carbon, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus stoichiometry of the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans cultured for 15, 30, 45, and 65 days under three levels of WER (0, 20, and 40% exchange of total volume day−1). We found that the negative effects of a higher WER on plant growth were primarily attributable to a deficiency in dissolved carbon dioxide, which resulted in shorter and thicker roots, smaller leaves (decreased width and length), higher specific leaf area, and lower below-: above-ground biomass ratios. Allometric analyses showed that the changes in root length reflected real plasticity, whereas other root and leaf adjustments indicated apparent plasticity. Furthermore, stoichiometric calculations indicated that N limited the growth of leaf tissues more than root tissues, thereby restricting the potential for real plasticity in leaf morphology.
