This paper presents a novel scheme to generate a real-time paper time scale by utilizing ensemble clock data and two-way satellite time and frequency transfer (TWSTFT) data of time laboratories in the Asia-Pacific region. Based on integration of the aforementioned data with a specific weighting method and a fuzzy prediction approach, the reference paper time scale devised in this paper can be generated in real time. The validity of the proposed scheme is investigated by undertaking about one year's worth of experiments, which are based on the calculated clock ensembles from TWSTFT links among Asian time laboratories. Moreover, the performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated with respect to the time scales of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and local realizations of UTC. The simulated real-time reference time scale based on the proposed scheme is within 10 ns with UTC, and time deviation is less than 0.6 ns for a time interval exceeding 60 days. Two-way satellite time and frequency transfer (TWSTFT) is one of the major techniques to compare the atomic time scales between timing laboratories. As more and more TWSTFT measurements have been performed, the large number of point-to-point 2-way time transfer links has grown to be a complex network. For future improvement of the TWSTFT performance, it is important to reduce measurement noise of the TWSTFT results. One method is using TWSTFT network time transfer. The Asia-Pacific network is an exceptional case of simultaneous TWSTFT measurements. Some indirect links through relay stations show better shortterm stabilities than the direct link because the measurement noise may be neutralized in a simultaneous measurement network. In this paper, the authors propose a feasible method to improve the short-term stability by combining the direct and indirect links in the network. Through the comparisons of time deviation (TDEV), the results of network time transfer exhibit clear improved short-term stabilities. For the links used to compare 2 hydrogen masers, the average gain of TDEV at averaging times of 1 h is 22%. As TWSTFT short-term stability can be improved by network time transfer, the network may allow a larger number of simultaneously transmitting stations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigations of the effects of clouds on Earth’s radiation budget demand accurate representations of cloud top parameters, which can be efficiently obtained by large-scale satellite remote sensing approaches. However, the insufficient utilization of multiband information is one of the major sources of uncertainty in cloud top products derived from geostationary satellites. In this study, we developed a new algorithm to estimate Cloud, Atmospheric Radiation and renewal Energy application (CARE) version 1.0 cloud top properties [cloud top height (CTH), cloud top pressure (CTP), and cloud top temperature (CTT)]. The algorithm is constructed from ten thermal spectral measurements in Himawari-8 observations by using the random forest (RF) method to comprehensively consider the contribution of each band to the cloud top parameters. We chose the highly accurate Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) products in 2018 as the true values. The sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the products can be fully reproduced by using multiple Himawari-8 channels with the addition of the digital elevation model (DEM) data. The validation results of the 2019 CALIOP data confirm that the new algorithm shows an effective performance, with correlation coefficients ($R$) of 0.89, 0.89, and 0.90 for CTH, CTP, and CTT, respectively. Moreover, a significant improvement in the ice cloud estimation is achieved, in which the CTT $R$ value increased from 0.46 to 0.70, as well as an improvement in the sea area, where the CTT $R$ value increased from 0.71 to 0.84 compared with the Himawari-8 products of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) P-tree system. We describe a methodology for tracking individual planetary waves in longitude-time plots of satellite data, based on fitting an elementary wave shape model to subsets of the data by maximum likelihood, then reconstructing the trajectory and evolution of every single wave (where for "single wave" we mean an individual positive or negative westward propagating anomaly) by joining the elementary waves according to their similarity. We then illustrate the potential of the methodology with an example at 34°N in the Atlantic Ocean and its adaptability to different cases with a second example on eastward-propagating Kelvin waves in the equatorial Pacific. Although the examples given use sea surface height anomaly data, the technique lends itself to be applied to any space-time plot of any dataset displaying propagation and, in particular, to sea surface temperature data.
