Role assignment is an important and complex task in collaboration and management. Group role assignment (GRA) pursues the optimal team performance by assigning pertinent roles to agents in a team from the team’s viewpoint. There are many factors that should be considered when conducting role assignment. Budgets are such a factor. This paper presents a challenging role assignment problem in collaboration, called GRA with budget constraints (GRABC). This paper contributes a thorough investigation of the GRABC problem including: 1) the first formalization of the proposed problem; 2) a set of practical solutions to different forms of this problem by using the IBM ILOG CPLEX optimization package (CPLEX); 3) a set of necessary conditions for these problems to possess feasible solutions to improve the CPLEX solutions; and 4) a synthesized process to deal with GRABC problems. Contribution 2) actually clarifies a list of requirements in solving the GRABC problem. This paper studies the collaborative budget allocation problem in which users are not isolated in the collaborative consumption of goods or services when available goods or services are limited. Different from existing methods that treat each user independently, we investigate the geometric properties of user’s consumption or preference on services, and design a matrix completion framework on the simplex. In this framework, an item’s allocation vector indicating how available services are allocated to users is estimated by the combination of user profiles as basis points on the simplex. Instead of using Euclidean distance directly, we specify a Riemannian distance on the simplex or project histogram data on simplex to Euclidean space. To intensify our model’s stability, we relax the exact recovery constraint to make a robust collaborative prediction. The resulting objective function is then efficiently optimized by a Riemannian conjugate gradient method on the simplex. Experiments on real-world data sets demonstrate our model’s competitiveness versus other collaborative budget prediction methods. Comparisons of different distance metrics for histogram data are shown and discussed. Note to Practitioners—This paper was motivated by the collaborative budget allocation (CBA) problem in which either a user has limited ratings that can be distributed among items, or a service has limited availability to all users in the sharing economy system. Existing approaches rarely consider this phenomenon in their collaborative prediction modeling, which implies the geometric constraints on a user’s rating vector. This paper suggests a matrix factorization framework to address this problem by learning a group of a user profile as basis points that can be combined to recover other users’ rating vectors. Considering the noise in observed ratings in real applications, we enhance the robustness of collaborative prediction by relaxing the recovery constraint. We then propose to specify the distance metric on the simplex from two perspectives, and give the optimization approach. In the future research, we will address the CBA in more complex settings, for example, some items can be substitutes or complementary for each other, in this way, how items can be better distributed among users is an interesting problem. It is an important topic to organize a team efficiently and keep it in a good state. In most cases, administrators try to avoid critical members. With this requirement, administrators prefer that their team members are able to be good at many things and expert in one (GMEO). However, that too many people are “good at many things” is definitely a waste. Role-based collaboration and its environments—classes, agents, roles, groups, and objects (E-CARGO) model are a good means to provide modeling and solutions to such a challenging problem. This paper formalizes the problem of GMEO into GMEO-1 (the fundamental form of GMEO) with the support of E-CARGO, clarifies two different forms of GMEO-1 and provides two highly practical solutions. The proposed solutions are verified by comparing with initial solutions using a linear programming solver, i.e., the IBM ILOG CPLEX Optimization Platform. The contributions of this paper are a thorough investigation of GMEO-1 that has no exact solutions even for a small group (e.g., ten people) and is normally managed by highly qualified administrators. This paper studies the precedence-constrained task assignment problem for a team of heterogeneous vehicles to deliver packages to a set of dispersed customers subject to precedence constraints that specify which customers need to be visited before which other customers. A truck and a micro drone with complementary capabilities are employed where the truck is restricted to travel in a street network and the micro drone, restricted by its loading capacity and operation range, can fly from the truck to perform the last-mile package deliveries. The objective is to minimize the time to serve all the customers respecting every precedence constraint. The problem is shown to be NP-hard, and a lower bound on the optimal time to serve all the customers is constructed by using tools from graph theory. Then, integrating with a topological sorting technique, several heuristic task assignment algorithms are proposed to solve the task assignment problem. Numerical simulations show the superior performances of the proposed algorithms compared with popular genetic algorithms. Note to Practitioners—This paper presents several task assignment algorithms for the precedence-constrained package delivery for the team of a truck and a micro drone. The truck can carry the drone moving in a street network, while the drone completes the last-mile package deliveries. The practical contributions of this paper are fourfold. First, the precedence constraints on the ordering of the customers to be served are considered, which enables complex logistic scheduling for customers prioritized according to their urgency or importance. Second, the package delivery optimization problem is shown to be NP-hard, which clearly shows the need for creative approximation algorithms to solve the problem. Third, the constructed lower bound on the optimal time to serve all the customers helps to clarify for practitioners the limiting performance of a feasible solution. Spatial crowdsourcing, a human-centric compelling paradigm in performing spatial tasks, has drawn rising attention. Task assignment is of paramount importance in spatial crowdsourcing. Existing studies often use heuristics of various kinds to solve task assignment problems. These schemes usually only apply some specific cases, once the environment changes, the efficiency of the algorithms is significantly reduced. In this paper, we first introduce a taxonomy of task assignment in spatial crowdsourcing. Next, we design an approximation algorithm and get an efficient solution for the important problem, namely, Bounded and Heterogeneous Task Assignment (BHTA), such that the sum of the rewards of workers is maximized subject to multiple constraints. We prove that the BHTA problem is NP-hard. Subsequently, we propose a constant-ratio approximation algorithm based on partition and shifting method to achieve the assignment solution. To meet with the workers’ dynamism, we further devise a greedy algorithm and provide theoretical guarantee. Experiments on synthetic and real datasets demonstrate the efficiency of our strategy over previous methods. In this paper, we formulated the optimal bit-allocation problem for a scalable codec for images/videos as a graph-based constrained vector-valued optimization problem with many optimal solutions, which are referred to as Pareto points. Pareto points are generally derived using weighted sum scalarization; however, it has yet to be determined whether all Pareto points can be derived using this approach. This paper addresses this issue. When presented as a theorem, our results indicate that as long as the rate-distortion function of each resolution is strictly decreasing and convex and the Pareto points form a continuous curve, then all Pareto points can be derived using scalarization. The theorem is verified using the state-of-the-art scalable coding method H.264/SVC and a scalability extension of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). We highlight a number of easily interpretable Pareto points that represent a good trade-off between candidate resolutions. The proximity point is defined as the Pareto point closest to the ideal performance for each resolution. This paper proposes a method for visualizing combinatorial search spaces named low-dimensional Euclidean embedding (LDEE). The proposed method transforms the original search space, such as a set of permutations or binary vectors, to $\pmb {\mathbb {R}}^{k}$ (with ${k} {=} {2}$ or 3 in practice) while aiming to preserve spatial relationships existing in the original space. The LDEE method uses the t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) to transform solutions from the original search space to the Euclidean one. In this paper, it is mathematically shown that the assumptions underlying the t-SNE method are valid in the case of permutation spaces with the Mallows distribution. The same is true for other metric spaces provided that the distribution of points is assumed to be normal with respect to the adopted metric. The embedding obtained using t-SNE is further refined to ensure visual separation of individual solutions. The visualization obtained using the LDEE method can be used for analyzing the behavior of the population in a population-based metaheuristic, the working of the genetic operators, etc. Examples of visualizations obtained using this method for the four peaks problem, the firefighter problem, the knapsack problem, the quadratic assignment problem, and the traveling salesman problem are presented in this paper. Many operation optimization problems such as scheduling and assignment of interest to the automation community are mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problems. Because of their combinatorial nature, the effort required to obtain optimal solutions increases drastically as the problem size increases. Such operation optimization problems typically need to be solved several times a day and require short solving times (e.g., 5, 10, or 20 min). The goal is, therefore, to obtain near-optimal solutions with quantifiable quality in a computationally efficient manner. Existing MILP methods, however, suffer from slow convergence and may not efficiently achieve this goal. In this paper, motivated by fast convergence of augmented Lagrangian relaxation (LR), a novel advanced price-based decomposition and coordination “surrogate absolute-value LR” (SAVLR) approach is developed. Within the method, convergence of our recent surrogate LR (SLR), which has overcome all major difficulties of traditional LR, is significantly improved by penalizing constraint violations by adding “absolute-value” penalties. Moreover, such penalties are efficiently linearized in a standard way, thereby enabling the use of MILP solvers. By exploiting the beautiful property of exponential reduction of complexity of subproblems upon decomposition, subproblems are efficiently solved and their solutions are efficiently coordinated by updating Lagrangian multipliers. Convergence is then proved under novel adjustment of penalty coefficients. A series of generalized assignment problems is considered, and for these problems, superior performance of SAVLR over other state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice methods is demonstrated. Accompanying CPLEX codes, whereby SAVLR is implemented, are also included. To significantly improve convergence while maintaining linearity so as to use MILP solvers, our idea is to penalize violations of relaxed constraints by the infrequently used “absolute-value” penalty functions. Although not differentiable, absolute-value penalties have the advantage of being exactly linearizable through extra variables and constraints. The difficulties caused by those extra constraints, which couple subproblems, are resolved by adaptive adjustment of penalty coefficients. A series of generalized assignment problems is considered and superior performance of the new method against state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice methods is demonstrated. The integration of aerial base stations carried by drones in cellular networks offers promising opportunities to enhance the connectivity enjoyed by ground users. In this paper, we propose an optimization framework for the 3–D placement and repositioning of a fleet of drones with a realistic inter-drone interference model and drone connectivity constraints. We show how to maximize network coverage by means of an extremal-optimization algorithm. The design of our algorithm is based on a mixed-integer non-convex program formulation for a coverage problem that is NP-Complete, as we prove in the paper. We not only optimize drone positions in a 3–D space in polynomial time, but also assign flight routes solving an assignment problem and using a strong geometrical tool, namely Bézier curves, which are extremely useful for non-uniform and realistic topologies. Specifically, we propose to fly drones following Bézier curves to seek the chance of approaching to clusters of ground users. This enhances coverage over time while users and drones move. We assess the performance of our proposal for synthetic scenarios as well as realistic maps extracted from the topology of a capital city. This paper analyzes the integration of Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) in a Fog Radio Access Network (FRAN) architecture with limited fronthaul capacity. More precisely, it proposes methods for optimizing the resource allocation for the downlink of a NOMA-based FRAN with multiple resource blocks (RB). The resource allocation problem is formulated as a mixed-integer optimization problem, which determines the user-to-RB assignment, the power allocated to each RB, and the power split levels of the NOMA users served by each RB. The optimization problem maximizes a network-wide rate-based utility function subject to fronthaul-capacity constraints. The paper proposes a feasible decoupled solution for such a non-convex optimization problem using a three-step hybrid centralized/distributed approach, which in part relies on the edge-devices computation capabilities. The paper proposes and compares two distinct methods for solving the assignment problem, namely a Hungarian-based method, and a Multiple Choice Knapsack-based method. The power allocation to RBs and the NOMA power split optimization are solved using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Simulations results illustrate the advantages of the proposed methods compared to different baseline schemes, including the conventional Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA), for different utility functions and different network environments. Task allocation is a critical phase of project management. Tree-type structures are frequently used constraints to obtain a pertinent task allocation. They can illustrate where one task may require numerous agents and when an agent can be assigned to different tasks (roles). The process of task allocation is made more complex when administrators need to satisfy sequential and fixed branch relationships between/among tasks (roles). This paper formalizes the tree-structured task allocation problem (TSTAP) with group multirole assignment (GMRA) and proves necessary conditions, the necessary and sufficient condition, as well as sufficient conditions, of TSTAP. The formalization makes it easy to find a solution with the IBM ILOG CPLEX optimization package (CPLEX). The necessary conditions improve the CPLEX solution by eliminating infeasible cases. The necessary and sufficient condition describes the solution space of TSTAP completely. Another exciting result is that the sufficient conditions can not only improve the CPLEX solution by describing a practical approximate solution space but also help decision-makers and human resource officers organize a team in order to successfully assign tasks. The proposed approach is verified by simulation experiments with respect to a real-world problem. The experimental results present the practicability of the proposed solutions in this paper. This paper was motivated by general cooperative projects whose tasks have tree-structured relationships. This can make the problem of successful multitask assignment extremely challenging. The traditional method of assignment such as the KM algorithm can no longer solve this problem. To solve the assignment problem with tree-structured relationships, an efficient many-to-many assignment with constraints is required. The proposed approach provides theoretical and technical foundations for efficient assignment of TSTA, which can not only provide a viable and effective assignment scheme for TSTA problems but also help human resource officers to formulate reasonable plans according to the relationships between/among tasks. In network-centric warfare, the interconnections among various combat resources enable an advanced operational pattern of cooperative engagement. The operational effectiveness and outcome strongly depends on the reasonable utilization of available sensors and weapons. In this paper, a mathematical model for the coallocation of sensors and weapons is built, taking into account the interdependencies between weapons and sensors, the resource constraints, the capability constraints, as well as the strategy constraints. A marginal-return-based constructive heuristic (MRBCH) is proposed to solve the formulated sensor–weapon–target assignment (S-WTA) problem. MRBCH exploits the marginal return of each sensor–weapon–target triplet and dynamically updates the threat value of all targets. It relies only on simple lookup operations to choose each assignment triplet, thus resulting in very low computational complexity. For performance evaluation, we build a general Monte Carlo simulation-based S-WTA framework. Furthermore, we employ a random sampling method and an extension of the state-of-the-art algorithm Swt_opt as competitors. The computational results show that MRBCH consistently performs very well in solving S-WTA instances of different scales, and it can generate assignment schemes much more efficiently than its competitors. In this paper, we study two sensor assignment problems for multitarget tracking with the goal of improving the observability of the underlying estimator. We consider various measures of the observability matrix as the assignment value function. We first study the general version where the sensors must form teams to track individual targets. If the value function is monotonically increasing and submodular, then a greedy algorithm yields a $1/2$ –approximation. We then study a restricted version where exactly two sensors must be assigned to each target. We present a $1/3$ –approximation algorithm for this problem, which holds for arbitrary value functions (not necessarily submodular or monotone). In addition to approximation algorithms, we also present various properties of observability measures. We show that the inverse of the condition number of the observability matrix is neither monotone nor submodular, but present other measures that are. Specifically, we show that the trace and rank of the symmetric observability matrix are monotone and submodular and the log determinant of the symmetric observability matrix is monotone and submodular when the matrix is nonsingular. If the target's motion model is not known, the inverse cannot be computed exactly. Instead, we present a lower bound for distance sensors. At CRYPTO 2017 and IEEE Transactions on Computers in 2018, Todo et al. proposed the division property based cube attack method making it possible to launch cube attacks with cubes of dimensions far beyond practical reach. However, assumptions are made to validate their attacks. In this paper, we further formulate the algebraic properties of the superpoly in one framework to facilitate cube attacks in more successful applications: we propose the "flag" technique to enhance the precision of MILP models, which enable us to identify proper non-cube IV assignments; a degree evaluation algorithm is presented to upper bound the degree of the superpoly s.t. the superpoly can be recovered without constructing its whole truth table and overall complexity of the attack can be largely reduced; we provide a divide-and-conquer strategy to Trivium-like stream ciphers namely Trivium, Kreyvium, TriviA-SC1/2 so that the large scale MILP models can be split into several small solvable ones enabling us to analyze Trivium-like primitives with more than 1000 initialization rounds; finally, we provide a term enumeration algorithm for finding the monomials of the superpoly, so that the complexity of many attacks can be further reduced. We apply our techniques to attack the initialization of several ciphers namely 839-round Trivium, 891-round Kreyvium, 1009-round TriviA-SC1, 1004-round TriviA-SC2, 184-round Grain-128a and 750-round Acorn respectively. A promising technique to provide mobile applications with high computation resources is to offload the processing task to the cloud. Utilizing the abundant processing capabilities of the clouds, mobile edge computing enables mobile devices with limited batteries to run resource hungry applications and to save power. However, it is not always true that edge computing consumes less power compared to device computing. It may take more power for the mobile device to transmit a file to the cloud than running the task itself. This paper investigates the power minimization problem for the mobile devices by data offloading in multi-cell multi-user OFDMA mobile edge computing networks. We consider the maximum acceptable delay as QoS metric to be satisfied in our network. We formulate the problem as a mixed integer nonlinear problem which is converted into a convex form using D.C. approximation. To solve the converted optimization problem, we have proposed centralized and distributed algorithms for joint power allocation and channel assignment together with decision-making. Simulation results illustrate that by utilizing the proposed algorithms, considerable power savings can be achieved, e.g., about 60 percent for large bit stream size compared to local computing baseline. With the increase of mobile devices, Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) has become an efficient way to ubiquitously sense and collect environment data. Comparing to traditional sensor networks, MCS has a vital advantage that workers play an active role in collecting and sensing data. However, due to the openness of MCS, workers and sensors are of different qualities. Low quality sensors and workers may yield noisy data or even inaccurate data. Which gives the importance of inferring the quality of workers and sensors and seeking a valid task assignment with enough total qualities for MCS. To solve the problem, we adopt truth inference methods to iteratively infer the truth and qualities. Based on the quality inference, this paper proposes a task assignment problem called quality-bounded task assignment with redundancy constraint (QTAR). Different from traditional task assignment problem, redundancy constraint is added to satisfy the preliminaries of truth inference, which requires that each task should be assigned a certain or more amount of workers. We prove that QTAR is NP-complete and propose a $ (2+\epsilon)$ (2 + ε) - approximation algorithm for QTAR, called QTA. Finally, experiments are conducted on both synthesis data and real dataset. This paper presents a new approach to accurately and efficiently identifying a large number of wireless devices blindly installed to known three-dimensional installation/fitting points, based on received signal strengths (RSSs) between the devices. The approach is non-trivial because of the factorial, mapping nature of the considered problem, the multiplicative ranging errors of the RSS measurements (with standard deviation of 5–7 dB), and the requirement of high mapping accuracy in many internet-of-things (IoT) applications, e.g., industrial IoT and aircraft. The consideration of a structured environment where the set of candidate node positions is known beforehand shifts the problem of interest from a pure position estimation problem to a position assignment problem. The key idea of the proposed approach is that we interpret the position mapping problem with a probabilistic graphical model, where the factorial nature of mapping (more specifically, the mutual exclusiveness of devices at every installation point) is fully captured. A max-product belief propagation is designed against the probabilistic graph, to estimate the max-marginal position distribution of each device. The Kuhn-Munkres algorithm is applied to preserve the mutual exclusiveness of devices throughout the belief propagation and to decide device locations based on the estimated position distributions. Large-scale simulations and field tests are carried out, showing that the new approach achieves close-to-100% accuracy in simulations with hundreds of blindfolded devices under RSS measurement errors with standard deviation of 5–7 dB. Our approach also achieves 100% accuracy in all field trials with 76 devices inside the cabin of a Fokker 100 airplane, dramatically outperforming baseline techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Integrating dense small cell (DSC) networks with mobile edge computing is employed by 5G to tackle the contradiction between the computation limitations of user equipment (UE) and the stringent latency requirement of services. This paper investigates the service-oriented edge resource allocation problem in DSC networks, determining where to deploy the service entity, how many service entities should be deployed at each edge cloud, and how to assign the UEs to service entities. The problem is challenging for the following three aspects: 1) Service entity deployment and UE assignment are highly coupled. 2) Due to the overlap of coverage regions of densely deployed small cells, the allocation mechanism of different base stations has mutual effects on the overall service performance. 3) Considering the limited resources of edge clouds, it is a thorny problem to encourage edge clouds to cache and share service startup images. We devote the following efforts to tackle the problem under these challenges. First, we explore blockchain’s decentralized, traceable, and secure characteristics, and propose a scheme to encourage image sharing in mobile edge computing. Second, we formulate the service-oriented edge resource allocation as mixed integer non-linear programming. Third, towards the target of reducing the computational complexity, we decouple UE assignment from service entity deployment and solve it through Gibbs sampling. Moreover, the power of Lyapunov optimization and convex optimization is incorporated to reduce the long-term power consumption and budget. We consider the energy-efficient mobility-aware content caching problem with clustered small cells (SCs) in ultra-dense networks (UDNs). The UDN is regarded as one of the key solutions to overcome the explosive growth of mobile data traffic and consequential energy consumption. In addition, caching the popular contents at the edge of UDNs can further mitigate the challenges of traffic and energy. In this paper, we group the SCs into disjoint clusters and model the mobility of users between clusters as a Markov chain. We formulate the caching problem aimed at minimizing the overall energy consumption for content delivery to the moving users. Then we decompose the complicated task of energy consumption optimization in cache-enabled UDNs into two sub-problems. In the first sub-problem, we formulate the inter-cluster caching problem as minimizing the energy consumption for serving a user request by the macro base station. We show that the first sub-problem is NP-hard, and develop a polynomial-heuristic algorithm. Further, we define the mobility-oblivious version of the sub-problem, and provide a ${\textstyle {1 \over {2k }}}$ -approximation solution for the mobility-aware based on this mobility-oblivious version. In the second sub-problem, we consider the heterogeneity of small cells and define the intra-cluster caching problem. The aim of this sub-problem is the placement of content in different SCs within the cluster so that the energy consumption for the content delivery in that cluster is minimized. In particular, the second sub-problem fits the general framework of the generalized assignment problem, which allows us to exploit its rich literature, to determine the optimal solution for our problem. Through extensive simulations based on real wireless data and human mobility patterns, we demonstrate the benefits of our approach that is even up to 56% better compared to the conventional caching schemes. In this paper, we investigate the combination of non-orthogonal multiple access and millimeter-wave communications (mmWave-NOMA). A downlink cellular system is considered, where an analog phased array is equipped at both the base station and users. A joint Tx-Rx beamforming and power allocation problem is formulated to maximize the achievable sum rate (ASR) subject to a minimum rate constraint for each user. As the problem is non-convex, we propose a sub-optimal solution with three stages. In the first stage, the optimal power allocation with a closed form is obtained for an arbitrary fixed Tx-Rx beamforming. In the second stage, the optimal Rx beamforming with a closed form is designed for an arbitrary fixed Tx beamforming. In the third stage, the original joint Tx-Rx beamforming and power allocation problem is reduced to a Tx beamforming problem by using the previous results, and a boundary-compressed particle swarm optimization (BC-PSO) algorithm is proposed to obtain a sub-optimal solution. With the proliferation of computation-extensive and latency-critical applications in the 5G and beyond networks, mobile-edge computing (MEC) or fog computing, which provides cloud-like computation and/or storage capabilities at the network edge, is envisioned to reduce computation latency as well as to conserve energy for wireless devices (WDs). This paper studies a novel device-to-device (D2D)-enabled multi-helper MEC system, in which a local user solicits its nearby WDs serving as helpers for cooperative computation. We assume a time division multiple access (TDMA) transmission protocol, under which the local user offloads the tasks to multiple helpers and downloads the results from them over orthogonal pre-scheduled time slots. Under this setup, we minimize the computation latency by optimizing the local user’s task assignment jointly with the time and rate for task offloading and results downloading, as well as the computation frequency for task execution, subject to individual energy and computation capacity constraints at the local user and the helpers. However, the formulated problem is a mixed-integer non-linear program (MINLP) that is difficult to solve. To tackle this challenge, we propose an efficient algorithm by first relaxing the original problem into a convex one, and then constructing a suboptimal task assignment solution based on the obtained optimal one. Furthermore, we consider a benchmark scheme that endows the WDs with their maximum computation capacities. To further reduce the implementation complexity, we also develop a heuristic scheme based on the greedy task assignment. Finally, the numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, as compared against the heuristic scheme and other benchmark ones without either joint optimization of radio and computation resources or task assignment design. This paper studies linear distributed estimation of an unknown random parameter vector in a bandwidth-constrained multisensor network. To meet the bandwidth limitations, each sensor converts its observation into a low-dimensional datum via a suitable linear transformation. Then, the fusion center estimates the parameter vector by linearly combining all the received low-dimensional data, aiming at minimizing the estimation mean square error. The main purpose of this paper is to jointly determine the compression dimension of each sensor (referred to as dimension assignment) and design the corresponding compression matrix when the total compression dimensions is limited. Such a joint design problem can be formulated as a rank-constrained optimization problem and it is shown to be NP-hard for the first time. In addition, successive quadratic upper-bound minimization (SQUM), SQUM-block coordinate descent (SQUM-BCD) and nuclear norm regularization (NNR) methods are developed to solve it approximately. Furthermore, we show that any accumulation point of the sequence generated by the SQUM method satisfies the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of the rank-constrained optimization problem, and the Phase II algorithm of the SQUM-BCD and NNR methods (both are two-phase algorithms and have the same Phase II algorithm) guarantees convergence at least to a stationary point. In this paper, we deal with the problem of dynamical assignment of traffic light schedules in large-scale urban networks. We present a model for signalized traffic networks, based on the cell transmission model, and then a simplified model based on averaging theory. The control objective is to improve traffic, optimizing traffic indexes such as total travel distance and density balancing. We design a scheme that decides the duty cycles of traffic lights, by solving a convex program. The optimization is done in real time, at each cycle of traffic lights, so as to take into account variable traffic demands. The scalability problem is tackled through the synthesis of a distributed optimization algorithm; this reduces the computational load significantly, since the large optimization problem is broken into small local subproblems, whose size does not grow with the size of the network, together with iterative exchanges of messages with few neighbor subproblems. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated via numerical simulations in two different scenarios: a macroscopic (MATLAB-based) Manhattan grid and a microscopic scenario (based on Aimsun simulator) reproducing a portion of the city of Grenoble, France. Edge computing is becoming pervasive in our daily lives with emerging smart devices and the development of communication technology. Smart devices with various resources make data transactions prevalent over edge environments. To ensure such transactions are unmodifiable and undeniable, blockchain technology is introduced into edge environments. In this paper, we propose a hybrid blockchain system to enhance the security for transactions and determine the incentive for miners in edge computing environments. We propose a Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS) hybrid consensus blockchain system utilizing the heterogeneity of devices to adapt to the characteristic of edge environments. We raise the incentive assignment problem for a fair incentive to PoW miners. We formulate the problem and propose an iterative and another heuristic algorithm to determine the incentive that the miner will receive for a new block. We further prove that the iterative algorithm can obtain global optimal results. Pilot contamination is a limiting factor in multicell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems because it can severely impair channel estimation. Prior works have suggested coordinating pilot design across cells in order to reduce the channel estimation error caused by pilot contamination. In this paper, we propose a method for coordinated pilot design using fractional programming to minimize the weighted mean squared-error (MSE) in channel estimation. In particular, we apply the recently proposed quadratic transform to the MSE expression which allows the effect of pilot contamination to be decoupled. The resulting problem reformulation enables the pilots to be optimized in closed form if they can be designed arbitrarily. When the pilots are restricted to a given set of orthogonal sequences, pilot optimization reduces to an assignment problem which can be solved by weighted bipartite matching. Furthermore, we consider the max-min fairness of data rates with orthogonal pilots and obtain an extension of the proposed method to correlated Rayleigh fading. Finally, simulations demonstrate the advantage of the proposed (orthogonal and nonorthogonal) pilot designs as compared with state-of-the-art methods in combating pilot contamination. Network slicing is a promising approach for enabling low latency computation offloading in edge computing systems. In this paper, we consider an edge computing system under network slicing in which the wireless devices generate latency sensitive computational tasks. We address the problem of joint dynamic assignment of computational tasks to slices, management of radio resources across slices and management of radio and computing resources within slices. We formulate the Joint Slice Selection and Edge Resource Management (JSS-ERM) problem as a mixed-integer problem with the objective to minimize the completion time of computational tasks. We show that the JSS-ERM problem is NP-hard and develop an approximation algorithm with bounded approximation ratio based on a game theoretic treatment of the problem. We use extensive simulations to provide insight into the performance of the proposed solution from the perspective of the whole system and from the perspective of individual slices. Our results show that the proposed slicing policy can achieve significant gains compared to the equal slicing policy, and that the computational complexity of the proposed task placement algorithm is approximately linear in the number of devices. Feature matching is a fundamental problem in many computer vision tasks. This paper proposes a novel effective framework for mismatch removal, named LOcality-guided Global-preserving Optimization (LOGO). To identify inliers from a putative matching set generated by feature descriptor similarity, we introduce a fixed-point progressive approach to optimize a graph-based objective, which represents a two-class assignment problem regarding an affinity matrix containing global structures. We introduce a strategy that a small initial set with a high inlier ratio exploits the topology of the affinity matrix to elicit other inliers based on their reliable geometry, which enhances the robustness to outliers. Geometrically, we provide a locality-guided matching strategy, i.e., using local topology consensus as a criterion to determine the initial set, thus expanding to yield the final feature matching set. In addition, we apply local affine transformations based on reference points to determine the local consensus and similarity scores of nodes and edges, ensuring the validity and generality for various scenarios including complex nonrigid transformations. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed LOGO, which is competitive with the current state-of-the-art methods. Accurate delay analysis with distributed RC delay can be computationally expensive, and can contribute the majority of the total runtime for gate sizers. Recent works have shown that Lagrangian relaxation (LR)-based gate sizers have produced designs with the lowest power on average. But they are also very slow due to a large number of expensive timing updates spread across several tens of iterations. In this paper, we develop an LR-based discrete gate sizer for fast timing and power reduction. Our gate sizer is multithreaded and is equipped with parallelization enabling techniques, namely mutual exclusion edge (MEE) assignment and directed acyclic graph (DAG)-based netlist traversal (DNT). MEEs are dummy edges assigned to improve load sharing among different threads. DNT facilitates simultaneous resizing of gates belonging to different topological levels. Our Lagrange multiplier update strategy enables rapid convergence of our timing and power recovery algorithms. To reduce the runtime of timing updates, we propose a simple and fast-to-compute effective capacitance model. We further propose mechanisms to calibrate timing models to improve their accuracy. By calibrating the internal timing models only twice, our proposed gate sizing flow facilitates extremely fast design optimization. We benchmark our gate sizer using the ISPD 2012 and 2013 gate sizing contest benchmark suites. Compared to the state-of-the-art gate sizer, our proposed gate sizer is on average $15\times $ faster and the optimized designs have 2.5% higher leakage power. In this paper, we investigate the scheduling design of a mobile edge computing (MEC) system, where active mobile devices with computation tasks randomly appear in a cell. Every task can be computed at either the mobile device or the MEC server. We jointly optimize the task offloading decision, uplink transmission device selection and power allocation by formulating the problem as an infinite-horizon Markov decision process (MDP). Compared with most of the existing literature, this is the first attempt to address the transmission and computation optimization with random device arrivals in an infinite time horizon to our best knowledge. Due to the uncertainty in the device number and location, the conventional approximate MDP approaches addressing the curse of dimensionality cannot be applied. An alternative and suitable low-complexity solution framework is proposed in this work. We first introduce a baseline scheduling policy, whose value function can be derived analytically with the statistics of random mobile device arrivals. Then, one-step policy iteration is adopted to obtain a sub-optimal scheduling policy whose performance can be bounded analytically. The complexity of deriving the sub-optimal policy is reduced dramatically compared with conventional solutions of MDP by eliminating the complicated value iteration. To address a more general scenario where the statistics of random mobile device arrivals are unknown, a novel and efficient algorithm integrating reinforcement learning and stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is proposed to improve the system performance in an online manner. Controller area network (CAN) is a widely used protocol that allows communication among electronic control units (ECUs) in automotive electronics. It was extended to CAN with flexible data-rate (CAN-FD) to meet the increasing demand for bandwidth generated by the growing number of features in modern automobiles. The signal-to-frame packing problem has been studied in the literature for both CAN and CAN-FD. In this paper, we propose and formulate the signal offset assignment problem (SOAP) in CAN-FD to improve the bus utilization during frame packing. We propose two algorithmic themes to solve SOAP and establish their worst case performance guarantees. The first is a general approximation framework (GAF) which can use any approximation algorithm for the makespan minimization problem (MMP) in multiprocessor systems. Its performance guarantee is the product of the performance guarantee of the MMP algorithm and the number of distinct periods in the frame. The second is a 2-D strip packing-based framework (2DSPF) which uses the bottom left fill algorithm for 2-D strip packing. The performance guarantee is $2{G}$ , where ${G}$ is the minimum number of groups into which the set of signals can be partitioned so that the periods of the signals in the same group form a geometric series. The experimental results for GAF and 2DSPF indicate that by carefully assigning offsets for signals in frame packing schemes, one can achieve about 10.83% improvement in bus utilization in CAN-FD systems. In this paper, we study a new type of spatial crowdsourcing, namely competitive detour tasking, where workers can make detours from their original travel paths to perform multiple tasks, and each worker is allowed to compete for preferred tasks by strategically claiming his/her detour costs. The objective is to make suitable task assignment by maximizing the social welfare of crowdsourcing systems and protecting workers’ private sensitive information. We first model the task assignment problem as a reverse auction process. We formalize the winning bid selection of reverse auction as an $n$ n -to-one weighted bipartite graph matching problem with multiple 0-1 knapsack constraints. Since this problem is NP-hard, we design an approximation algorithm to select winning bids and determine corresponding payments. Based on this, a Secure Reverse Auction (SRA) protocol is proposed for this novel spatial crowdsourcing. We analyze the approximation performance of the proposed protocol and prove that it has some desired properties, including truthfulness, individual rationality, computational efficiency, and security. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first theoretically provable secure auction protocol for spatial crowdsourcing systems. Current distributed control methods have a lack of information exchange infrastructure to enable spatially evolving multiagent formations. Specifically, these methods are designed based on information exchange rules represented by a network having a single layer, where they lead to multiagent formations with fixed, nonevolving spatial properties. For situations where capable agents have to control the resulting formation through these methods, they can often do so if such agents have global information exchange ability. Yet, global information exchange is not practical for cases that have large numbers of agents and low-bandwidth peer-to-peer communications. Motivated from this standpoint, the contribution of this paper is to show how information exchange rules, which are represented by a network having multiple layers (multiplex information networks), can be designed for enabling spatially evolving multiagent formations. In particular, we first consider the formation assignment problem and then the formation tracking problem and introduce new distributed control architectures that allow capable agents to spatially alter the size and the orientation of the resulting formation without requiring global information exchange ability. In addition, tools and methods from differential potential fields are further utilized in order to generalize the proposed distribute control architecture for the formation tracking problem to allow for connectivity maintenance and collision avoidance needed in real-world applications. Two-echelon vehicle routing problem (2E-VRP) is a challenging problem that involves both the strategic and tactical planning decisions on both echelons. The satellite locations and the customer distribution affect the cost of different components on the second echelon, thus the possibilities of satellite-to-customer assignment complicates the problem. In this paper, we propose a graph-based fuzzy evolutionary algorithm for solving 2E-VRP. The proposed method integrates a graph-based fuzzy assignment scheme into an iteratively evolutionary learning process to minimize the total cost. To resolve the possibilities of the satellite-to-customer assignment, graph-based fuzzy operator is used to take advantage of population evolution and avoid excessive fitness evaluations of unpromising moves in different satellites. Each offspring is produced via graph-based fuzzy assignment procedure out of an assignment graph from parent individuals, and fuzzy local search procedure is used to further improve the offspring. Many task models have been proposed to express and analyze the behavior of real-time applications at different levels of precision. Most of them target sequential applications with no support for parallelism. The digraph task model is one of the most general ones, as it allows modeling arbitrary directed graphs (digraphs) for sequential job releases. In this paper, we extend the digraph task model to support intra-task parallelism. For the proposed parallel multi-mode digraph model, we derive sufficient schedulability tests and a dichotomic search to improve the test pessimism for a set of $n$n tasks onto a heterogeneous single-ISA multi-core platform. To reduce the computational complexity of the schedulability test, we also propose heuristics for (i) partitioning parallel digraph tasks onto the heterogeneous cores, and (ii) assigning core operating frequencies to reduce the overall energy consumption, while meeting real-time constraints. The $N$ − $k$ problem is very well known in the power industry and it tries to answer the question whether there exists a set of $k$ lines in a power network with $N$ elements whose removal would cause the failure of the system. In practice, it is common to evaluate a system according to an $N$ −1 criterion, i.e., $k = 1$. While this problem has traditionally been considered in a deterministic setting, stochastic behavior within the system is important especially in the context of extreme events. A number of stochastic Monte Carlo models have been proposed to estimate the probability of cascading failures. In this paper, we deal with simulation budget allocation of the stochastic $N$ –1 problem. More specifically, we assume that a simulation model is able to provide us an estimate of the system failure rate when any line is tripped. It is not difficult to see how simulation of all configurations to some certain accuracy can become computationally expensive with the growth of $N$. Under such a setting, we transform the $N$ –1 problem into a stochastic selection process with optimal computing budget allocation (OCBA): given $N$ configurations, we would like to sequentially allocate a certain number of simulation replications in order to answer the question whether the system is reliable or not. We show through theoretical analysis and numerical experiments that the probability of correctly identifying the system reliability state can be increased by applying OCBA allocation rules in the simulation budget allocation process. Although 3D point cloud data has received widespread attentions as a general form of 3D signal expression, applying point clouds to the task of dense correspondence estimation between 3D shapes has not been investigated widely. Furthermore, even in the few existing 3D point cloud-based methods, an important and widely acknowledged principle, i.e. one-to-one matching, is usually ignored. In response, this paper presents a novel end-to-end learning-based method to estimate the dense correspondence of 3D point clouds, in which the problem of point matching is formulated as a zero-one assignment problem to achieve a permutation matching matrix to implement the one-to-one principle fundamentally. Note that the classical solutions of this assignment problem are always non-differentiable, which is fatal for deep learning frameworks. Thus we design a special matching module, which solves a doubly stochastic matrix at first and then projects this obtained approximate solution to the desired permutation matrix. Moreover, to guarantee end-to-end learning and the accuracy of the calculated loss, we calculate the loss from the learned permutation matrix but propagate the gradient to the doubly stochastic matrix directly which bypasses the permutation matrix during the backward propagation. Our method can be applied to both non-rigid and rigid 3D point cloud data and extensive experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance for dense correspondence learning. The ongoing quest for transportation electrification with the massive proliferation of EV charging stations (EVCSs) will deepen the interaction and require the further coordination of coupled power and transportation networks (PTN). The individually-owned EVCSs located in an urban transportation network (UTN) will compete using price signals to maximize their respective payoffs. In this paper, a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MA-DRL) method is proposed to model the pricing game in UTN and determine the optimal charging prices for a single EVCS. The EVCS charging demand is first analyzed using a modified user equilibrium traffic assignment problem (UE-TAP) with elastic traveling demands and different charging prices. The price competition problem is then formulated as a game with incomplete information in which the market environment is complex due to nonlinear traffic assignments. Thus, the MA-DRL approach is proposed to learn the charging pricing strategies of multiple EVCSs and approximate the Nash Equilibrium (NE) of the pricing game using the incomplete information. The proposed solution will determine the optimal pricing strategies for an EVCS in UTN. The case studies on a 24-node Sioux-Falls network, and the real-world Xi'an and Hangzhou cities are conducted to verify the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed approach. This paper investigates a new multi-objective order assignment and scheduling problem for personal protective equipment (PPE) production and distribution during the outbreak of epidemics like COVID-19. The objective is to simultaneously minimize the total cost and maximize the PPE supply timeliness. For the problem, we first develop a bi-objective mixed-integer linear program (MILP). Then an $\epsilon $ -constraint combined with logic-based Benders decomposition method is proposed based on some explored properties. We then extend the proposed model to handle dynamics and randomness. In particular, we design a predictive reactive rescheduling approach to address random order arrivals and manufacturer disruptions. Computational experiments on a real case from China and 100 randomly generated instances are conducted. Results show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms an adapted $\epsilon $ -constraint method combined with the proposed MILP and the widely used non-dominated sorting genetic (NSGA-II) in obtaining high-quality Pareto solutions. This paper investigates the integration of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) with downlink non-orthogonal-multiple-access (NOMA) in a multi-user two-cell network assisted by the joint-transmission coordinated multipoint (JT-CoMP). Specifically, the RIS is deployed at the edge of two adjacent cells to assist the JT-CoMP from these two cells to multiple far NOMA users located at their edges. Under this setup, we jointly optimize the power allocation (PA) coefficients at the base stations (BSs), the user clustering (UC) policy, and the phase-shift (PS) matrix of the RIS with the objective of maximizing the network sum-rate subject to a target quality-of-service, defined in terms of the minimum required data rate at each cellular user, and the successive interference cancellation (SIC) constraints. The formulated problem ends to be a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear program that is difficult to be solved in a straightforward manner. To alleviate this issue, and with the aid of alternating optimization (AO), the original optimization problem is decomposed into two sub-problems, a joint PA and UC sub-problem and a PS sub-problem, that are solved in an alternating way. For the first sub-problem, we invoke the bi-level optimization approach to decouple the PA sub-problem from the UC sub-problem. For the PA sub-problem, closed-form expressions for the optimal PA coefficients are derived. On the other hand, the UC problem is projected to multiple 2-dimensional assignment problems, each of which is solved using the Hungarian method. Finally, the PS sub-problem is formulated as a difference-of-convex problem and an efficient solution is obtained using the successive convex approximation technique. The numerical results reveal that the network sum-rate of the proposed RIS-assisted CoMP NOMA networks outperforms the conventional CoMP NOMA scheme without the assistance of the RIS, the RIS-assisted CoMP orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme, and RIS-assisted NOMA scheme, especially for low transmit power from the BSs. In this paper, an aerial heterogeneous wireless network consists of a high altitude platform (HAP) and low altitude platforms (LAPs) as aerial base stations (ABSs) in a downlink orthogonal division multiple access (OFDMA) transmission is investigated. Two types of spectrum sharing, including spectrum underlay access (SUA) and spectrum overlay access (SOA) are employed to evaluate the inter-tier interference. Distributed problem formulation and solving method are used to reduce the computational complexity, communication overhead and system latency. Subcarrier assignment and power allocation in spectral efficiency (SE), energy efficiency (EE) and transmission power optimization problems are accomplished by the proposed two-layer algorithm. In the proposed algorithm, first, subcarrier assignment based on constraints of the optimization problems is carried out to cover both SUA and SOA with low computational complexity. Second, the proposed algorithm performs power allocation. We consider a generic model of distributed caching systems, where the cache servers are constrained by two main resources: memory size and bandwidth. Content distribution networks (CDNs) providing video contents and peer-to-peer video-on-demand services are a few examples of such systems. The throughput of these systems crucially depends on how these resources are managed, i.e., how contents are replicated across servers and how requests of specific contents are matched to servers storing the contents. In this paper, we formulate the problem of computing the replication policy and the matching policy, which jointly maximizes the throughput of the caching system. It is shown that computing the optimal replication policy for a given finite system is an NP-hard problem. A greedy replication scheme is then proposed and is shown to achieve a constant factor approximation guarantee when combined with the optimal matching policy. We note that the optimal matching policy has the problem of interruption in service of the ongoing requests due to re-assignment or repacking of the existing requests. To avoid this problem, we propose a simple randomized online matching scheme and analyze its performance in conjunction with the proposed replication scheme. We consider a limiting regime, where the number of servers is large and the arrival rates of the contents are scaled proportionally, and show that the proposed policies achieve asymptotic optimality. Extensive simulation results are presented to evaluate the performance of different policies and study the behavior of the caching system under different service time distributions of the requests. Crowdsourced live streaming (CLS), such as Twitch.tv and Inke.tv, has emerged as an important multimedia application in recent years. Video delivery in such CLS service involves two steps: 1) video uploading—video streaming (i.e., a live channel) generated from a broadcaster is uploaded to the server, which we call the “first mile” network and 2) video distribution—the video streaming is then delivered to viewers in the channel. Today’s CLS services usually use conventional content delivery network solutions to address the video distribution problem, while little attention has been paid to improve the video uploading quality. Our measurement study shows that the first mile network causes 17% viewer rebuffers, and some viewers quit the channel once encountering rebuffer. In this paper, we propose a content harvest network (CHN) architecture to address the uploading problem in the CLS service. Specifically, the CHN architecture employs edge devices in the network as relays to receive the streaming uploaded by broadcasters and then forward to the central servers. On one hand, we need to reduce the latency since it is live streaming; on the other hand, we must provide sustainable upload bandwidth. It is challenging to achieve both at the same time, especially in such high dynamic system as CLS. In order to provide global optimal and real-time assignment, we propose a hybrid solution, i.e., centralized and distributed assignment. Specifically, we formulate the centralized relay assignment problem as an optimization problem to achieve both low latency and sustainable bandwidth. To cope with the frequent channel establishments, we use a multi-armed bandit method to characterize the time-variant network condition. Experiment results on a large-scale trace provided by Inke.tv show that our solution can reduce the overall viewer cost by 40% compared to state-of-the-art solutions. Obtaining a multiresource allocation scheme for multitask influenced by uncertain factors is a critical problem in a collaborative logistics network. This paper presents an optimal allocation model of fuzzy resources for multistage random logistics tasks based on the six-point trapezoidal fuzzy number and the membership function. Besides, considering task demands and resource constraints, a new cost–time–quality multiobjective programming of N–N task–resource assignment is introduced, which can be divided into minimize total logistics cost and execution time, maximize total service quality. Furthermore, by setting the different simulation scenarios, the results show that if the decision maker has a higher risk preference and pursues the optimization of single or multiobjective, the higher degree membership and satisfaction function values can be obtained with a larger compensation coefficient. The allocation scheme of task–resource assignment generated by proposed model has a high global level of utilization efficiency, which can effectively utilize fuzzy resources in collaborative logistics network, and avoid resource shortage caused by the excessive occupation of local resources. Inverted generational distance (IGD) has been widely considered as a reliable performance indicator to concurrently quantify the convergence and diversity of multiobjective and many-objective evolutionary algorithms. In this paper, an IGD indicator-based evolutionary algorithm for solving many-objective optimization problems (MaOPs) has been proposed. Specifically, the IGD indicator is employed in each generation to select the solutions with favorable convergence and diversity. In addition, a computationally efficient dominance comparison method is designed to assign the rank values of solutions along with three newly proposed proximity distance assignments. Based on these two designs, the solutions are selected from a global view by linear assignment mechanism to concern the convergence and diversity simultaneously. In order to facilitate the accuracy of the sampled reference points for the calculation of IGD indicator, we also propose an efficient decomposition-based nadir point estimation method for constructing the Utopian Pareto front (PF) which is regarded as the best approximate PF for real-world MaOPs at the early stage of the evolution. To evaluate the performance, a series of experiments is performed on the proposed algorithm against a group of selected state-of-the-art many-objective optimization algorithms over optimization problems with 8-, 15-, and 20-objective. With the explosive growth in the scale of cloud computing infrastructures, reliability and energy efficiency have become important concerns considering the great complexity of cloud data centers. There is an urgent need for efficient task assignment that can dispatch tasks to appropriate cloud data center servers, which is critical to achieve reliability and energy efficiency in current cloud data centers. Most of the research on task assignment focuses on only one of the objectives of reliability and energy efficiency, while the two objectives are intrinsically conflicting with each other. In this paper, we deal with the problem of task assignment in data centers, with the objective of minimizing the energy consumption while providing failure tolerance to task execution failure. We propose a reliability-aware and energy-efficient task replica assignment algorithm based on running task replicas at a low speed and enabling multiple task replicas to share the same server resources. Each task in a job processed by the cloud computing platform has two instances: main task and task replica (shadow). Each main task runs on an individual server, and the task replica associated with the main task is assigned on a different server. The main tasks run at the full server speed, while the task replicas run at a lower rate than the main tasks. The task replicas can be mapped onto dedicated backup servers or be assigned to the servers on which the main tasks are running. Multiple task replicas can share the same server resources to reduce the number of servers required. We conduct experiments through simulations. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the energy consumption, while achieving a good balance between the number of servers used and job completion time. Mobile and IoT devices are becoming increasingly capable computing platforms that are often underutilized. In this paper, we propose RAMOS, a system that leverages the idle compute cycles in a group of heterogeneous mobile and IoT devices that can be clustered to form an edge FemtoCloud. At the heart of this system, we formulate a multi-objective, resource-aware task assignment and scheduling problem. The scheduler runs in two main modes; latency-minimization and energy-efficiency. Under the latency-minimization mode, it strives to maximize the computational throughput of the constructed FemtoCloud while maintaining the energy consumption below an operator specified threshold. Under the energy-efficient mode, it minimizes the total energy consumed in the FemtoCloud while meeting defined tasks deadlines. Due to the NP-Completeness of this scheduling problem, we design a set of heuristics to solve it. We implement a prototype of our system and use it to evaluate its performance and efficiency. Our results demonstrate the system's ability to meet different scheduling objectives while adhering to pre-specified time and energy constraints. Compared to other schedulers, RAMOS achieves 10 to 40 percent completion time improvement under latency minimization mode and up to 30 percent more energy-efficiency under the energy-efficient mode. Pilot contamination resulting from pilot reuse seriously restricts the communication performance of the cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks. To deal with this problem, an efficient pilot assignment scheme using a weighted graphic framework is proposed in this correspondence paper. Specifically, a novel metric is first introduced for capturing the severity of potential mutual pilot contamination in cell-free topology. On this basis, the weighted pilot contamination graph is constructed to depict the dynamic interference relationship corresponding to the network. Then, the pilot assignment optimization is mapped to the Max k-Cut problem, and a heuristic algorithm is exploited to realize pilot decontamination. Numerical simulation results reveal the superior performance of the proposed scheme, which is capable of achieving a significant improvement in throughput with low complexity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
