SPANISH language , *ENGLISH language writing , *AUTHORS , *WRITING processes , *ENGLISH language - Abstract
Authoring support consists of (semi)automated aids to be used at different stages during the writing process. Language information, however, tends to be restricted to areas such as spelling and grammar checking or term banks, and text construction difficulties that writers face concerning the structure of particular genres, associated sentence formulations or genre-specific vocabulary have not received proper attention. An additional gap in the research is that this support is generally addressed to English language users. This paper addresses these concerns focusing on a particular genre: the company's directors' report, and on Spanish language writers writing in English. A custom-made monolingual corpus has been analyzed using Bhatia (1993, 2004) and Swales (1990, 2004) definitions of genre and move combined with theme characterization. Recurrent strings for each move/step, which are conventionally associated with each rhetorical unit, were identified and formulated as "meta-strings." The bilingual glossary includes domain-specific items as well as move/step or genre-specific lexical and phraseological options, i.e., elements used irrespective of the business, places or people involved. The results are valuable by themselves, as an analysis of the genre, but also as the empirical basis for the authoring support tool that we present here, and as language training materials. This paper offers a programmatic proposal for the characterisation, or profiling, of editorials from the Spanish newspaper El País on the dimension of the explicit signalling of intersentential relations for purposes of comparison. The study adopts an integrated discourse as process approach to the description of language, in conjunction with some of the basic tenets of corpus linguistics. The paper advocates strict specificity and differentiation of text types in such studies and a rigorous respect for the intrasentential, the intersentential and the interparagraph segmentation which authors impose on their texts. Figures are offered for the frequency of selected connectors in a corpus of one whole year of editorials from this newspaper, together with information relating to their sentence and paragraph position. Additional consideration is given to important alternative means for the expression of intersentential relations and to questions related to corpus extent in studies of this nature. SPANISH language -- Terms & phrases , *SPANISH language , *PREPOSITIONS , *ADJECTIVES (Grammar) , *SYNTAX (Grammar) , *SEMANTICS , *CORPORA - Abstract
This paper attempts to explain the alternation between the prepositions a and de when used as complements to the adjectives contrario 'contrary', diferente 'different', and distinto 'distinct', as illustrated in Yo no fui distinta __mi madre 'I wasn't different __my mother', where both prepositions can be inserted. Relying on Langacker's3 notion of construal, the hypothesis is that a construes the comparison in the sense of 'direction toward' while de construes it in the sense of 'separation' or 'point of departure', and that these senses should be reflected in the usage contexts of the two prepositions. The quantitative analysis of some 800 cases extracted from Davies'4 two billion word Corpus del español, however, shows no indication of a and de setting up different construals. This lack of correlation between usage and semantics appears to be due to the diachronic generalization of a as complement of the three adjectives, thus relegating the use of de to specific collocations. Grammar studies have focused lately on speech instead of on written language, being the latter the most traditional approach. This situation confronts us with the necessity of a new definition for some grammar concepts. This paper proposes a new definition for the concept of sentence so that it can be used for spoken Spanish analysis. Already existing definitions are evaluated and discarded because they do not fit with many normal speech structures. Besides, they usually are confusing regarding syntactic, prosodic and pragmatic features. We propose a new definition only based on grammar and semantic features. Conclusions show that this approach allows the syntactic analysis of speech in a much more accurate way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of youth language has grown during the last decades, and covers quite a few of the particular features and ways of communicating that characterize young people. Contrastive studies in this area, however, are few and far between, no doubt due to the lack of corpora. In this paper, which is based on two corpora of youth language, COLT and COLAm, we compare some aspects of the use of the pragmatic markers like and como by adolescents in London and Madrid. Like and como are used for the same functions, although like is used twice as frequently as como. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to present the theoretical and methodological keys that have been followed for the preparation of a corpus of neological latinisms of the 15th century. Due to the lack of a historical dictionary of the Spanish language, our research is based upon the lexical items of the Diccionario del castellano del siglo XV en la Corona de Aragón (DICCA-XV). We’ve then compared the first documentation of its neologisms with the data of theCorpus diacrónico del español (CORDE) and a sample of lexicographical works at our reach. Finally, we’ll use the listof neologisms to explain the sort of philological data that can be deduced and analyzed from it using the DICCA-XV., Pretendemos dar a conocer, en este trabajo, las claves teóricas y metodológicas que hemos seguido para la confección de un corpus de latinismos neológicos del siglo XV.

Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-15T18:28:29Z (GMT). In this paper we discuss and present the first results gathered from the compilation of a learner corpus comprised of texts written by university students (Language, Literature and Translation Course). We made use of Corpus Linguistics and observations of researchers from the learner’s corpus field, in order to compile and analyze a corpus of argumentative and descriptive texts written in Spanish. Four hundred compositions were collected (about 120 thousand words) from August 2011 to December 2012. The methodology adopted assisted us considerably in maintaining a comprehensive working agenda, taking into consideration students’ needs and using the data collected as subsidy to improve classroom management of content. We also present the difficulties faced during the data gathering and propose procedures do avoid or minimize them.
