Quasicrystals represent a category of rarely structured solids that challenge traditional periodicity in crystal materials. Recent advancements in the synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials have paved the way for exploring the unique physical properties of these systems. Here, we report on the synthesis of 2D quasicrystals featuring 30{\deg} alternating twist angles between multiple graphene layers, using chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Strikingly, we observed periodic Moir\'e patterns in the quasicrystal, a finding that has not been previously reported in traditional alloy-based quasicrystals. The Moir\'e periodicity, varying with the parity of the constituent layers, aligns with the theoretical predictions that suggest a stress cancellation mechanism in force. The emergence of Moir\'e fringes is attributed to the spontaneous mismatched lattice constant in the oriented graphene layers, proving the existence of atomic relaxation. This phenomenon, which has been largely understudied in graphene systems with large twist angles, has now been validated through our use of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Our CVD-grown Moir\'e quasicrystal provides an ideal platform for exploring the unusual physical properties that arise from Moir\'e periodicity within quasicrystals.

Quantum valley Hall (QVH) domain wall states are a new class of one-dimensional (1D) one-way conductors that are topologically protected in the absence of valley mixing. Development beyond a single QVH channel raises important new questions as to how QVH channels in close spatial proximity interact with each other, and how that interaction may be controlled. Scalable epitaxial bilayer graphene synthesis produces layer stacking wall (LSW) bundles, where QVH channels are bound, providing an excellent platform to study QVH channel interactions. Here we show that distinct strain sources lead to the formation of both well-separated LSWs and close packed LSW bundles. Comparative studies of electronic transport in these two regimes reveal that close-packed LSW bundles support electrically tunable magnetoconductance. The coexistence of different strain sources offers a potential pathway to realize scalable quantum transport platform based on LSWs where electrically tunability enables programmable functionality.

Non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is one of the most fundamental phenomena in non-Hermitian physics. Although it is established that one-dimensional NHSE originates from the nontrivial spectral winding topology, the topological origin behind the higher-dimensional NHSE remains unclear so far. This poses a substantial challenge in constructing and manipulating high-dimensional NHSEs. Here, an intuitive bottom-to-top scheme to construct high-dimensional NHSEs is proposed, through assembling multiple independent one-dimensional NHSEs. Not only the elusive high-dimensional NHSEs can be effectively predicted from the well-defined one-dimensional spectral winding topologies, but also the high-dimensional generalized Brillouin zones can be directly synthesized from the one-dimensional counterparts. As examples, two two-dimensional nonreciprocal acoustic metamaterials are experimentally implemented to demonstrate highly controllable multi-polar NHSEs and hybrid skin-topological effects, where the sound fields can be frequency-selectively localized at any desired corners and boundaries. These results offer a practicable strategy for engineering high-dimensional NHSEs, which could boost advanced applications such as selective filters and directional amplifiers., Comment: Published in Advanced Materials

Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have significantly enhanced their coding capabilities. However, existing benchmarks predominantly focused on simplified or isolated aspects of programming, such as single-file code generation or repository issue debugging, falling short of measuring the full spectrum of challenges raised by real-world programming activities. To this end, we propose DevBench, a comprehensive benchmark that evaluates LLMs across various stages of the software development lifecycle, including software design, environment setup, implementation, acceptance testing, and unit testing. DevBench features a wide range of programming languages and domains, high-quality data collection, and carefully designed and verified metrics for each task. Empirical studies show that current LLMs, including GPT-4-Turbo, fail to solve the challenges presented within DevBench. Analyses reveal that models struggle with understanding the complex structures in the repository, managing the compilation process, and grasping advanced programming concepts. Our findings offer actionable insights for the future development of LLMs toward real-world programming applications. Non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), characterized by a majority of eigenstates localized at open boundaries, is one of the most iconic phenomena in non-Hermitian lattices. Despite notable experimental studies implemented, most of them witness only certain signs of the NHSE rather than the intrinsic exponential localization inherent in eigenstates, owing to the ubiquitous and inevitable background loss. Even worse, the experimental observation of the NHSE would be completely obscured in highly lossy cases. Here, we theoretically propose a dual test approach to eliminate the destructive loss effect and track the intrinsic NHSE that is essentially irrelevant to background loss. Experimentally, the effectiveness of this approach is precisely validated by one- and two-dimensional non-Hermitian acoustic lattices. Our study sheds new light on the previously untapped intrinsic aspect of the NHSE, which is of particular significance in non-Hermitian topological physics.

Occultations provide indirect sensitivity to the number density of small Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) too faint to directly detect telescopically. We present results from the Caltech HI-speed Multicolor camERA (CHIMERA) survey with the Palomar Hale Telescope, which monitored stars over the central 5'x5' of the M22 globular cluster along the ecliptic plane for serendipitous occultations by kilometer-scale KBOs over 63 hr across 24 nights at a 33 Hz frame rate simultaneously in i' and g'. We adapted dense-field photometry and occultation template fitting techniques to this dataset, finding a 95% confidence upper limit on the occultation rate corresponding to an ecliptic sky density of <10^7 deg^-2 of >1 km diameter classical KBOs. We discuss a few of the occultation-like light curve signatures at the edge of the sensitivity limit responsible for setting the upper bounds, and their likely nonviability as true occultations., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 1 table; AJ, in press

Thouless charge pumping protocol provides an effective route for realizing topological particle transport. To date, the first-order and higher-order topological pumps, exhibiting transitions of edge-bulk-edge and corner-bulk-corner states, respectively, are observed in a variety of experimental platforms. Here, we propose a concept of hybrid-order topological pump, which involves a transition of bulk, edge, and corner states simultaneously. More specifically, we consider a Kekul\'e-textured graphene lattice that features a tunable phase parameter. The finite sample of zigzag boundaries, where the corner configuration is abnormal and inaccessible by repeating unit cells, hosts topological responses at both the edges and corners. The former is protected by a nonzero winding number, while the latter can be explained by a nontrivial vector Chern number. Using our skillful acoustic experiments, we verify those nontrivial boundary landmarks and visualize the consequent hybrid-order topological pump process directly. Symmetry plays a key role in classifying topological phases. Recent theory shows that in the presence of gauge fields, the algebraic structure of crystalline symmetries needs to be projectively represented, which enables unprecedented topological band physics. Here, we report a concrete acoustic realization of mirror Chern insulators by exploiting the concept of projective symmetry. More specifically, we introduce a simple but universal recipe for constructing projective mirror symmetry, and conceive a minimal model for achieving the projective symmetry-enriched mirror Chern insulators. Based on our selective-excitation measurements, we demonstrate unambiguously the projective mirror eigenvalue-locked topological nature of the bulk states and associated chiral edge states. More importantly, we extract the non-abelian Berry curvature and identify the mirror Chern number directly, as conclusive experimental evidence for this exotic topological phase. Recently, the higher-order topological phases from the chiral AIII symmetry classes are characterized by a Z topological invariant known as the multipole chiral numbers, which indicate the number of degenerate zero-energy corner states at each corner. Here, we report the first experimental realization of higher-order topological insulators protected by multipole chiral numbers with using acoustic crystals. Our acoustic measurements demonstrate unambiguously the emergence of multiple corner states in the middle of the gap, as predicted by the quantized multipole chiral numbers. Our study may provoke new possibilities for controlling sound, such as acoustic sensing and energy trapping.

Sunskirting asteroid (3200) Phaethon has been repeatedly observed in STEREO HI1 imagery to anomalously brighten and produce an antisunward tail for a few days near each perihelion passage, phenomena previously attributed to the ejection of micron-sized dust grains. Color imaging by the SOHO LASCO coronagraphs during the 2022 May apparition indicate that the observed brightening and tail development instead capture the release of sodium atoms, which resonantly fluoresce at the 589.0/589.6 nm D lines. While HI1's design bandpass nominally excludes the D lines, filter degradation has substantially increased its D line sensitivity, as quantified by the brightness of Mercury's sodium tail in HI1 imagery. Furthermore, the expected fluorescence efficiency and acceleration of sodium atoms under solar radiation readily reproduce both the photometric and morphological behaviors observed by LASCO and HI1 during the 2022 apparition and the 17 earlier apparitions since 1997. This finding connects Phaethon to the broader population of sunskirting and sungrazing comets observed by SOHO, which often also exhibit bright sodium emission with minimal visible dust, but distinguishes it from other sunskirting asteroids without detectable sodium production under comparable solar heating. The nature of complex eigenenergy enables unique band topology to the non-Hermitian (NH) lattice systems. Recently, there has been a fast growing interest in the elusive winding and braiding topologies of the NH single and double bands, respectively. Here, we explore the even more intricate NH multi-band topology and present the first experimental characterization of the three-band braid relations by acoustic systems. Based on a concise tight-binding model, we design a ternary cavity-tube structure equipped with a highly controllable unidirectional coupler, through which the acoustic NH Bloch bands are experimentally reproduced in a synthetic dimension. We identify the NH three-band braid relations from both the perspectives of eigenvalues and eigenstates, including a noncommutative braid relation and a swappable braid relation. Topological features embedded in ancient braiding and knotting arts endow significant impacts on our daily life and even cutting-edge science. Recently, fast growing efforts are invested to the braiding topology of complex Bloch bands in non-Hermitian systems. This new classification of band topology goes far beyond those established in Hermitian counterparts. Here, we present the first acoustic realization of the topological non-Hermitian Bloch braids, based on a two-band model easily accessible for realizing any desired knot structure. The non-Hermitian bands are synthesized by a simple binary cavity-tube system, where the long-range, complex-valued, and momentum-resolved couplings are accomplished by a well-controlled unidirectional coupler. In addition to directly visualizing various two-band braiding patterns, we unambiguously observe the highly-elusive topological phase transitions between them. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are counter-intuitive localized states with eigenvalues embedded in the continuum of extended states. Recently, nontrivial band topology is exploited to enrich the BIC physics, resulted in topological BICs (TBICs) with extraordinary robustness against perturbations or disorders. Here, we propose a simple but universal mirror-stacking approach to turn nontrivial bound states of any topological monolayer model into TBICs. Physically, the mirror-stacked bilayer Hamiltonian can be decoupled into two independent subspaces of opposite mirror parities, each of which directly inherits the energy spectrum information and band topology of the original monolayer. By tuning the interlayer couplings, the topological bound state of one subspace can move into and out of the continuum of the other subspace continuously without hybridization. As representative examples, we construct one-dimensional first-order and two-dimensional higher-order TBICs, and demonstrate them unambiguously by acoustic experiments. Inspired by the newly emergent valleytronics, great interest has been attracted to the topological valley transport in classical metacrystals. The presence of nontrivial domain-wall states is interpreted with a concept of valley Chern number, which is well defined only in the limit of small bandgap. Here, we propose a new visual angle to track the intricate valley topology in classical systems. Benefiting from the controllability of our acoustic metacrystals, we construct Weyl points in synthetic three-dimensional momentum space through introducing an extra structural parameter (rotation angle here). As such, the two-dimensional valley-projected band topology can be tracked with the strictly quantized topological charge in three-dimensional Weyl crystal, which features open surface arcs connecting the synthetic Weyl points and gapless chiral surface states along specific Weyl paths. All theoretical predictions are conclusively identified by our acoustic experiments. C/2017 K2 (PANSTARRS) is an Oort cloud comet previously observed to be active at heliocentric distances r>20 au on what is likely its first passage through the inner solar system. We observed the comet on 2021 March 19-20 at r=6.82 au pre-perihelion and 8.35 deg phase angle with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and obtained high spatial resolution photometry and polarimetry mapping the properties of dust over the coma prior to the onset of water ice sublimation activity on the nucleus. We found clear radial gradients in the color and polarization of the coma: the F475W-F775W (g'-i') reflectance slope increased from ~4.5% per 100 nm within ~10,000 km of the nucleus up to ~7% per 100 nm by ~50,000 km, while the negative polarization in F775W (i') strengthened from about -2% to -3.5% over the same range. The radial intensity profiles moreover strongly deviate from profiles simulated for stable dust grains. Near-infrared imagery obtained with the Palomar Hale Telescope on 2021 May 18 at r=6.34 au revealed a continued absence of micron-sized grains in the tail, but showed no clear spatial gradient in JHKs colors. The observed patterns collectively appear consistent with the inner coma being optically dominated by sublimating, micron-sized water ice grains, unlike the tail of more stable, millimeter-sized grains. Finally, we evaluated these results alongside other Oort cloud comets, and found in a reanalysis of HST observations of C/2012 S1 (ISON) that the near-nucleus polarimetric halo reported for that comet is likely an observational artifact., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; PSJ, in press

Topological phononics offers numerous opportunities in manipulating elastic waves that can propagate in solids without being backscattered. Due to the lack of nanoscale imaging tools that aid the system design, however, acoustic topological metamaterials have been mostly demonstrated in macroscale systems operating at low (kilohertz to megahertz) frequencies. Here, we report the realization of gigahertz topological valley Hall effect in nanoelectromechanical AlN membranes. Propagation of elastic wave through phononic crystals is directly visualized by microwave microscopy with unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution. The valley Hall edge states, protected by band topology, are vividly seen in both real- and momentum-space. The robust valley-polarized transport is evident from the wave transmission across local disorder and around sharp corners, as well as the power distribution into multiple edge channels. Exploring new topological phases and phenomena has become a vital topic in condensed matter physics and material sciences. It is generally believed that a pair of band nodes with opposite topological charges will annihilate after collision. Recent studies reveal that a braided colliding nodal pair can be stabilized in a multi-gap system with PT or C_2z T symmetry. Beyond the conventional single-gap abelian band topology, this intriguing phenomenon exemplifies non-abelian topological charges. Here, we construct ideal acoustic metamaterials to realize non-abelian braiding with the fewest band nodes. We experimentally observe an elegant but nontrivial nodal braiding process, including nodes creation, braiding, collision, and repulsion (i.e., failure to annihilate), and measure the mirror eigenvalues to elucidate the essential braiding consequence. The latter, at the level of wavefunctions, is of prime importance since the braiding physics essentially aims to entangle multi-band wavefunctions. Furthermore, we experimentally unveil the highly intricate correspondence between the edge responses and the bulk non-abelian charges. Notably, all our experimental data perfectly reproduce our numerical simulations. Our findings pave the way for developing non-abelian topological physics that is still in its infancy.

Recently, artificial moire superlattices of classical waves have aroused tremendous interest, inspired by the newly emergent twistronics that focuses on the peculiar electronic properties induced by flat bands. However, so far, the moire flat bands have not been observed directly. Here, we report the first experimental observation of ultraflat bands in moire sonic crystals with frequency-momentum spectra, together with a real-space visualization of the hallmark localized states. Strikingly different from the established magic angle mechanism for twisted bilayer graphene, the flat bands are formed by weakly coupled moire potential-well states inside a wide band gap, and can be realized over a broad range of twist angles. The average group velocity of the moire localized states, as a faithful reflection of the band flatness, decays exponentially with the moire period of the acoustic structure. Recently, higher-order topological insulators have been attracting extensive interest. Unlike the conventional topological insulators that demand bulk gap closings at transition points, the higher-order band topology can be changed without bulk closure and exhibits as an obstruction of higher-dimensional boundary states. Here, we report the first experimental realization of three-dimensional surface-obstructed topological insulators with using acoustic crystals. Our acoustic measurements demonstrate unambiguously the emergence of one-dimensional topological hinge states in the middle of the bulk and surface band gaps, as a direct manifestation of the higher-order band topology. Together with comparative measurements for the trivial and phase-transition-point insulators, our experimental data conclusively evidence the unique bulk-boundary physics for the surface-obstructed band topology. That is, the topological phase transition is determined by the closure of surface gap, rather than by closing the bulk gap. Symmetry plays a critical role in classifying phases of matter. This is exemplified by how crystalline symmetries enrich the topological classification of materials and enable unconventional phenomena in topologically nontrivial ones. After an extensive study over the past decade, the list of topological crystalline insulators and semimetals seems to be exhaustive and concluded. However, in the presence of gauge symmetry, common but not limited to artificial crystals, the algebraic structure of crystalline symmetries needs to be projectively represented, giving rise to unprecedented topological physics. Here we demonstrate this novel idea by exploiting a projective translation symmetry and constructing a variety of M\"obius-twisted topological phases. Experimentally, we realize two M\"obius insulators in acoustic crystals for the first time: a two-dimensional one of first-order band topology and a three-dimensional one of higher-order band topology. We observe unambiguously the peculiar M\"obius edge and hinge states via real-space visualization of their localiztions, momentum-space spectroscopy of their 4{\pi} periodicity, and phase-space winding of their projective translation eigenvalues. Not only does our work open a new avenue for artificial systems under the interplay between gauge and crystalline symmetries, but it also initializes a new framework for topological physics from projective symmetry.

Long period comet C/2021 A1 (Leonard) will approach Venus to within 0.029 au on 2021 December 18 and may subsequently graze the planet with its dust trail less than two days later. We observed C/2021 A1 with the Lowell Discovery Telescope on 2021 January 13 and March 3, as well as with the Palomar Hale Telescope on 2021 March 20, while the comet was inbound at heliocentric distances of r=4.97 au, 4.46 au, and 4.28 au, respectively. Tail morphology suggests that the dust is optically dominated by ~0.1-1 mm radius grains produced in the prior year. Neither narrowband imaging photometry nor spectrophotometry reveal any definitive gas emission, placing 3-sigma upper bounds on CN production of <1e23 molec/s at both of the latter two epochs. Trajectory analysis indicates that large (>1 mm) grains ejected at extremely large heliocentric distances (r>30 au) are most strongly favored to reach Venus. The flux of such meteors on Venus, and thus their potential direct or indirect observability, is highly uncertain as the comet's dust production history is poorly constrained at these distances, but will likely fall well below the meteor flux from comet C/2013 A1 (Siding Spring)'s closer encounter to Mars in 2014, and thus poses negligible risk to any spacecraft in orbit around Venus. Dust produced in previous apparitions will not likely contribute substantially to the meteor flux, nor will dust from any future activity apart from an unlikely high speed (>0.5 km/s) dust outburst prior to the comet reaching r~2 au in 2021 September., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 1 table; AJ, in press

Near-Sun Comet C/2019 Y4 (ATLAS) is the first member of a long-period comet group observed to disintegrate well before perihelion. Here we present our investigation into this disintegration event using images obtained in a 3-day {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (\hst) campaign. We identify two fragment clusters produced by the initial disintegration event, corresponding to fragments C/2019 Y4-A and C/2019 Y4-B identified in ground-based data. These two clusters started with similar integrated brightness, but exhibit different evolutionary behavior. C/2019 Y4-A was much shorter-lived compared to C/2019 Y4-B, and showed signs of significant mass-loss and changes in size distribution throughout the 3-day campaign. The cause of the initial fragmentation is undetermined by the limited evidence but crudely compatible with either the spin-up disruption of the nucleus or runaway sublimation of sub-surface supervolatile ices, either of which would lead to the release of a large amount of gas as inferred from the significant bluing of the comet observed shortly before the disintegration. Gas can only be produced by the sublimation of volatile ices, which must have survived at least one perihelion passage at a perihelion distance of $q=0.25$~au. We speculate that Comet ATLAS is derived from the ice-rich interior of a non-uniform, kilometer-wide progenitor that split during its previous perihelion. This suggests that comets down to a few kilometers in diameter can still possess complex, non-uniform interiors that can protect ices against intense solar heating., Comment: AJ in press

Surveys have shown that up to one tenth of all ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) are appreciable radio emitters, with their emission attributed to a combination of gyrosynchrotron radiation and the electron cyclotron maser instability (ECMI). 2M J0746+2000AB is a close stellar binary comprised of an L0 and L1.5 dwarf that was previously identified as a source of 5 GHz radio emission. We used very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) to precisely track the radio emission over seven epochs in 2010-2017, and found both components to be radio emitters -- the first such system identified -- with the secondary component as the dominant source of emission in all epochs. The previously identified 2.07 h periodic bursts were confirmed to originate from the secondary component, although an isolated burst was also identified from the primary component. We additionally fitted the VLBI absolute astrometric positions jointly with existing relative orbital astrometry derived from optical/IR observations with Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to determine the orbital parameters of the two components. We found the masses of the primary and secondary optical components to be 0.0795 +/- 0.0003 Msun and 0.0756 +/- 0.0003 Msun, respectively, representing the most precise mass estimates of any UCDs to date. Bilayer two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials are attracting increasing attention due to their predicted high quality electronic and optical properties. Here we demonstrate dense, selective growth of WSe2 bilayer flakes by chemical vapor deposition with the use of a 1:10 molar mixture of sodium cholate and sodium chloride as the growth promoter to control the local diffusion of W-containing species. A large fraction of the bilayer WSe2 flakes showed a 0 and 60o twist between the two layers, while moire 15 and 30o-twist angles were also observed. Well-defined monolayer-bilayer junctions were formed in the as-grown bilayer WSe2 flakes, and these interfaces exhibited p-n diode rectification and an ambipolar transport characteristic. This work provides an efficient method for the layer-controlled growth of 2D materials, in particular, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides and promotes their applications in next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Cometary impacts pose a long-term hazard to life on Earth. Impact mitigation techniques have been studied extensively, but they tend to focus on asteroid diversion. Typical asteroid interdiction schemes involve spacecraft physically intercepting the target, a task feasible only for targets identified decades in advance and in a narrow range of orbits---criteria unlikely to be satisfied by a threatening comet. Comets, however, are naturally perturbed from purely gravitational trajectories through solar heating of their surfaces which activates sublimation-driven jets. Artificial heating of a comet, such as by a laser, may supplement natural heating by the Sun to purposefully manipulate its path and thereby avoid an impact. Deflection effectiveness depends on the comet's heating response, which varies dramatically depending on factors including nucleus size, orbit and dynamical history. These factors are incorporated into a numerical orbital model to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of using high-powered laser arrays in Earth orbit and on the ground for comet deflection. Simulation results suggest that a diffraction-limited 500 m orbital or terrestrial laser array operating at 10 GW for 1% of each day over 1 yr is sufficient to fully avert the impact of a typical 500 m diameter comet with primary nongravitational parameter A1 = 2 x 10^-8 au d^-2.
