Many plant materials in nature have the ability to change their shape to respond to external stimuli, such as humidity or moisture, to ensure their survival or safe seed release. A well-known example for this phenomenon is the pinecone, which is able to open its scales at low humidity due to the specific bilayer structures of the scale. Inspired by this, we developed a novel humidity-driven actuator based on paper. This was realized by the lamination of untreated paper made from eucalyptus fibers to a paper–carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) composite. As observed, the hygroexpansion of the composite can be easily controlled by the amount of CMC in the impregnated paper sheet, which, thus, controls the morphologic deformation of the paper bilayer. For a more detailed understanding of these novel paper soft robots, we also studied the dynamic water vapor adsorption, polymer distribution and hygroexpansion of the paper–polymer composites. Finally, we applied a geometrically nonlinear finite element model to predict the bending behavior of paper bilayers and compared the results to experimental data. In this study, the photothermal performance of lignin-based nanospheres was investigated. Subsequently, a photothermal actuator was prepared using lignin-based carbon nanospheres (LCNSs). The results demonstrated that LCNSs exhibited an impressive photothermal conversion efficiency of up to 83.8%. This extreme efficiency significantly surpasses that of lignin nanospheres (LNSs) and covalently stabilized LNSs (HT-LNSs). As a structural material, a hydrophobic coating was effectively engineered by LCNSs on the filter paper, achieving a water contact angle of 151.9° ± 4.6°, while maintaining excellent photothermal effects (with a temperature increment from room temperature to 138 °C in 2 s). When employing hydrophobic filter paper as the substrate for the photothermaldriven actuator, under the influence of a 1.0 W/cm2 power–density NIR laser, the material exhibited outstanding photothermal actuation, achieving speeds up to 16.4 mm/s. In addition, the direction of motion of the actuator can be adjusted in accordance with the location of the NIR light irradiation. Origami robots, inspired by an ancient form of paper folding art, are capable of achieving high displacement in a lightweight and compact design that conventional robots can hardly attain. It, however, remains a challenge to drive origami robots with in situ active materials that imply minimal added mass and complexity and can be easily controlled to achieve multiple actuation modalities. Herein, inspired by the Twisted Tower origami structure, dielectrophoretic liquid zipping actuation concept is employed to develop a modular architecture, capable of achieving complicated motions with multiple degrees of freedom (DoF). The experimental results show a maximum of 3.9 degrees tilting per layer toward any desired direction, a 56.1% contraction of the original length, and 5.4 degrees twisting per layer. Each layer can generate a maximum contractile force of 1.03 N with a maximum 64.7% power efficiency and 2.775 W kg−1 power‐to‐weight ratio. A modified heterochiral arrangement of this modular actuator is proposed to enhance controllability across various movement modes. Its use in robotic‐wrist‐like actuation has been demonstrated, highlighting its significant potential for integration into soft robotic multi‐DoF structures, such as continuum arms. This study presents a novel approach to create a low‐cost and user‐friendly water‐induced actuator based on hydrophobic papers and a simple embossing method. By injecting water onto the papers through microfluidic channels made by embossing, fast and reversible bending actuation can be induced. The actuation angle and speed are dependent on the amount and duration of the water applied, which allows the actuator to be effectively controlled by syringe injection/drawing without the need for an external power supply. A bending angle of >90° can be achieved in ≈15 s, with complete reversal attainable in ≈3 min; and the actuation can be induced again by resting for ≈1 h after the reversal. This work represents a significant contribution to the field of paper‐based microfluidics by demonstrating actuation in a battery‐free, low‐cost, and simple approach, with potential applications in paper‐based analytical devices such as medical diagnostics. This study focuses on investigating a novel category of paper actuators, aiming to attain a favorable equilibrium between substantial electrically actuated force and extended service lifetime (Ts) for the soft electric-responsive artificial muscle. Consequently, the present research has developed an Electro-responsive Biomass Paper Actuator (ERBPA) utilizing calcium alginate hydrogel, employing absolute ethanol (CH3CH2OH) as the slow-release agent, through a straightforward and viable preparation procedure. Moreover, a comprehensive investigation was carried out on the electro-mechano-chemical behaviors and strengthening mechanism of the ERBPA with varying volume fractions of CH3CH2OH, under the electrical actuation of 4 V DC voltage. The experimental findings revealed a gradual decrease in the density of electrically actuated force, elastic modulus, and yield strength with the increasing volume fraction of CH3CH2OH. Specifically, at a volume fraction of 30%, these properties reached their respective minimum values of approximately 15.152 mN/g, 6.5 MPa, and 0.0999 MPa. In contrast to the internal resistance (Rg) of the ERBPA, the specific capacitance (Cp) and the Ts exhibited an initial improvement followed by a reduction, while the rise time (Tr) demonstrated a positive correlation with the volume fraction of CH3CH2OH but a negative correlation with the reaction velocity (Vf). Specifically, at a volume fraction of 25%, Cp, Ts and Tr reached their maximum values of 96.2 mF/g, 1287 s, and 170 s, respectively, whereas Rg and Vf attained their minimum values of 2.39 Ω and 0.044 mN/g·s, respectively. The slow-release effect of CH3CH2OH inherently contributed to the protection of certain free Ca2+ ions, thereby causing a gradual and consistent coordination process with sodium alginate molecules. Polylactic acid (PLA) composites having 1 wt% of MoS2 particles are prepared by solvent (SM) and melt mixing (MM) methods and their main thermal and mechanical properties are characterized. Coated films from SM samples and 3D‐printed filaments from MM samples are tested as active layers in reversible bilayer actuators using a paper sheet as a passive layer. The thermal properties depend on the method used to prepare the composites with MM samples presenting a cold crystallization and a glass transition during the first and second heating and SM samples displaying a standard melt process during the first heating and a small cold crystallization and a glass transition during second heating. Regarding the stiffness, MoS2 increases this property confirming its reinforcement effect. Both kinds of bilayers show reversible actuation under heating either by putting the actuator on a hot plate or by remotely irradiating the sample with near‐infrared light (NIR). Under NIR, the 3D printed composites present a much higher actuation. The higher remote actuation in composited bilayers is explained by the NIR light absorption of the MoS2 photoactive particles. Purpose: Adaptive load-bearing structures pursue the approach of saving mass within a load-bearing structure by adding external energy, thus saving materials and resources. This paper provides an overview of current research developments and shows some examples of existing prototypes. Design/methodology/approach: First, basic terms and definitions from the research field of adaptive structures are introduced. After a brief historical insight, the numerical methods and prototypes used are presented as examples. The paper concludes with a summary of the state-of-the-art and open questions. Findings: The current state of the art shows that the idea of adaptive structures offers great potential for more sustainability and resource efficiency in the construction industry. However, it also shows that research is still at the basic stage and that there are still some gaps in research. Originality/value: The implementation of adaptive load-bearing structures is just one of many different approaches to greater sustainability in the construction sector. The issue of adaptive structures is a highly interdisciplinary field of research. The following paper is a literature review intended to summarize and critically evaluate the state-of-the-art research in this field. The load-adaptive behavior of the muscles in the human musculoskeletal system offers great potential for minimizing resource and energy requirements in many technical systems, especially in drive technology and robotics. However, the lack of knowledge about suitable technical linear actuators that can reproduce the load-adaptive behavior of biological muscles in technology is a major reason for the lack of successful implementation of this biological principle. In this paper, therefore, the different types of linear actuators are investigated. The focus is particularly on artificial muscles and rope pulls. The study is based on literature, on the one hand, and on two physical demonstrators in the form of articulated robots, on the other hand. The studies show that ropes are currently the best way to imitate the load-adaptive behavior of the biological model in technology. This is especially illustrated in the context of this paper by the discussion of different advantages and disadvantages of the technical linear actuators, where ropes, among other things, have a good mechanical and control behavior, which is very advantageous for use in an adaptive system. Finally, the next steps for future research are outlined to conclude how ropes can be used as linear actuators to transfer load-adaptive lightweight design into technical applications. The electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA) is a new type of high-performance servo actuator that originated in the field of aerospace, and it is gradually becoming a common basic component for various types of large equipment. A miniature EHA, mainly composed of a micro two-dimensional (2D) piston pump and a brushless DC motor, is designed in this article by simplifying the system structure. This paper analyzes the structure and working principle of this EHA and establishes the mathematical models of the brushless DC motor, micro two-dimensional pump, and hydraulic cylinder. Field-oriented control (FOC) is used to drive the brushless DC motor, and the models of the controller are established in Simulink. Furthermore, the models of the mechanical and hydraulic systems of the miniature EHA are established in AMESim. In addition to this, a prototype of this miniature EHA was fabricated in this paper and an experimental platform was built for experiments. In the joint simulation environment, the rise time of the EHA system at 6000 r/min is 0.158 s and the frequency response amplitude attenuation to −3 dB has a bandwidth of 20 Hz. On the other hand, the constructed miniature EHA prototype was dynamically characterized to obtain a rise time of 0.242 s at 6000 r/min and a bandwidth of 13 Hz. Brain injuries resulting from spinal cord injuries, strokes, or cerebral palsy are among the traumas most capable of compromising the motor activities of human limbs, hence the necessity for the development of exoskeletons dedicated to the rehabilitation of these organs. This review examines the landscape of actuators essential for the design of cutting-edge upper-limb rehabilitation exoskeletal structures. Beyond merely surveying the current types of actuators available, the paper aims to provide guidelines for selecting actuators that fit optimally with the objectives of upper-limb rehabilitation. The description starts with a brief discussion on the biomechanics of the upper limbs, focusing on the kinematics of pivotal joints (wrist, elbow, shoulder). Subsequently, the existing actuators are systematically reviewed, offering detailed insights into their primary features, operational principles, strengths, weaknesses, and noteworthy applications within the realm of rehabilitation robotics. After the discussion about the actuators, the paper advances by furnishing valuable guidelines for actuators' selection tailored for upper limb rehabilitation. These guidelines discuss crucial factors, such as the forces required and the natural Range Of Motions (ROMs) of upper limb joints. This paper presents an experimental analysis of a high-response piezoelectric actuator system for the modular design of hydraulic digital fluid control units. It focuses on determining static and dynamic characteristics, forming the basis for developing a smart Industry 4.0 component that incorporates both actuator and sensor function. The design process examines the main challenges, advantages, disadvantages, and working principles to define parameters that impact the actuator's behaviour and performance. The new piezoelectric actuator system features three piezoelectric stack actuators in series, enabling simultaneous actuation and sensing by applying and measuring the electrical voltage at each piezo element. The experimental setup and test methodology are explained in detail, revealing that the new design, combined with an appropriate open-loop or closed-loop control method, offers superior actuator stroke control, high stroke resolution, and a high-dynamic step response. This paper proposes a concept of a smart piezo actuator system focused on I4.0 and an actuator administration shell, integrated with 5G and RFID technology, which will allow automatic plug-and-play functionality and efficient interconnection, communication, and data transfer between the hydraulic valve and the piezoelectric actuator system. Dual-mode coupling drive system can improve the dynamic performance of electric vehicles through mode switching, and the quality of mode switching directly affects the comfort of drivers and passengers. Mechanical coupling on the left and right sides of the single actuator causes mutual interference during shifting, resulting in prolonged power interruption time and shifting shock. Therefore, this paper analyzes the mutual interference mechanism of single-actuator shifting, designs a new dual actuator, and proposes a staged fuzzy PID controller. Finally, the effectiveness of dual-actuator shifting is proven through simulations and real vehicle testing. Compared with conventional PID control and BP neural network PID control, the shock degree is reduced by 64% and 50%, which improves the mode-switching quality of the dual-mode coupling drive system. This paper investigates the fixed-time tracking control problem for agile missiles with multiple heterogeneous actuators in the presence of saturation constraints and external disturbances. To reduce the turning radius and promote maneuvering envelope, a novel combination scheme for blended actuators is introduced in this paper, consisting of a flexible mechanism control system (FCS), reaction-jet control system (RCS), and aerodynamic control. Based on the proposed nonsingular terminal sliding mode surface, a fixed-time anti-saturation controller with an auxiliary system is presented first to ensure global fixed-time stability and to compensate for the adverse effects of input saturation. Subsequently, a fixed-time disturbance observer is constructed to estimate uncertainties and lumped disturbances, and to address the chattering problem. To assign the total virtual control command to different actuators, a control allocation based on dynamic programming considering actuator dynamics is established. This paper addresses the problems of valve-turning operation in rescue environments where a wheeled mobile manipulator (WMM) is employed, including the possible occurrence of large internal forces. Rather than attempting to obtain the exact position of the valve, this paper presents a solution to two main problems in robotic valve-turning operations: the radial position deviation between the rotation axes of the tool and the valve handle, which may cause large radial forces, and the possible axial displacement of the valve handle as the valve turns, which may lead to large axial forces. For the former problem, we designed a compliant end-effector with a tolerance of approximately 3.5° (angle) and 9.7 mm (position), and provided a hybrid passive/active compliance method. For the latter problem, a passivity-based force tracking algorithm was employed. Combining the custom-built compliant end-effector and the passivity-based control method can significantly reduce both the radial and the axial forces. Additionally, for valves with different installation types and WMMs with different configurations, we analyzed the minimum required number of actuators for valve turning. Marine cranes are one of the most important industrial equipment in the maritime field. The base of a marine crane is dynamically moving as the motion of the ship's six degrees of freedom that is affected by offshore environmental loads. There is a coupling between the crane and the ship, which means the crane operation and the ship motion affect each other. In this paper, co-simulation technology is employed to construct the virtual marine operation system which is composed of diverse Functional Mock-Up Units (FMUs) exported using the Functional Mock-Up Interface (FMI) standard and System Structure and Parameterization (SSP) standard to define the structure and parameters based on the co-simulation platform Vico. A path planning case for the Palfinger crane is implemented using the A* algorithm. The physical three-dimensional working space of the crane is discretized into a finite number of nodes in joint space. The cost is defined by the variable of the ship motion to optimize the marine operation. The obtained discrete nodes are smoothed to get the velocity of the actuators as control signals. This paper discusses the design of a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) pseudo-force presentation device for a palm. The device was designed to present pressure stimulation to a palm to invoke a pseudo-force sensation. In addition, the stimulator can rotate to invoke a pseudo-torque sensation through tangential skin stretch in the proximal/distal direction. Whereas the previous devices used for pseudo-force presentation on a palm utilized voice coil motors (VCM) to generate pressure, the developed device uses a DC gear motor, cam, and lever, which comprise a series elastic actuator (SEA). Although the mechanism's response is slower than the VCM-based device's, it can realize lower power consumption when generating constant force. The paper discusses the design requirement to provide sufficient pseudo-force sensation. Then, a prototype device was evaluated, which satisfied the requirements regarding size, weight, force, and stroke. The device was utilized in a human-subject experiment to investigate the effect of tangential skin stretch along the proximal/distal direction on a palm. The engagement quality of a helicopter dry clutch has a significant impact on the service life and overall flight performance of the helicopter. The engagement oil pressure is an important factor affecting the clutch engagement quality. Firstly, a nonlinear input–output dynamic model for the dry clutch is developed to investigate the optimization and control of dry clutch engagement pressure in this paper. Secondly, to efficiently obtain the optimal pressure curve, an optimal method combining the developed dynamic model with the state feedback gain of a linear quadratic optimization regulator (LQR) solver is proposed. Thirdly, considering that hydraulic actuators may struggle with tracking certain pressure curves, a hydraulic actuator for accurately tracking pressure curves based on fuzzy PID is proposed. The simulation results indicate that the developed hydraulic actuator exhibits an excellent tracking performance. Moreover, compared with linear and segmented pressure curves, the optimal pressure curve derived from the proposed method significantly reduces jerk, friction work, and engagement duration, resulting in improved helicopter dry clutch engagement quality. This paper considers the design, manufacture, and testing of a prototype "soft–stiff" worm-inspired robot referred to herein, as the PneumaticallyActuated PeristaLtic Advancing Modular (PALAM) robot. The robot has a modular structure, mimicking the segmented nature of earthworms, and each segment is individually actuated by a set of three pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs). The PAMs contract when inflated by pressurised air, generating a pulling force and fulfilling the role of biological muscles in the robot. The PAMs are made from the elastomer silicone rubber, which affords the robot flexibility and enables a wide range of real-life applications. A control-system is designed which can inflate any PAM on demand, and hence replicate the peristaltic motion of earthworms in the PALAM robot. Finally, this paper discusses a successful, low-cost, and widely accessible approach for the manufacture of the PAMs utilised herein. The PAMs can be scaled dimensionally and made from different materials with varying mechanical properties and behaviours, meaning that they are suitable for use in a wide range of robotics applications. A hybrid drone called a biplane quadrotor operates in both low (during the horizontal flight) and high (transition maneuver) Angle of Attack (AoA). So, this paper focuses on enhancing aerodynamic force during the transition maneuver. Synthetic Jet actuators (SJAs) can modify airfoil shapes virtually, so either the flow reattaches or flow separation will be delayed. This delay can enhance the aerodynamic force. In this paper, CFD analysis is performed using Ansys Fluent to study the impact of SJA on NACA 0015 airfoil at high (30°) AoA. This study aims to find the best location of SJA for high AoA to get maximum lift enhancement. The outcome of this study reveals that at 85 %, we can get maximum enhancement in the lift. This study investigates the characteristics of a novel origami-based, elastomeric actuator and a soft gripper, which are controlled by hand gestures that are recognized through machine learning algorithms. The lightweight paper–elastomer structure employed in this research exhibits distinct actuation features in four key areas: (1) It requires approximately 20% less pressure for the same bending amplitude compared to pneumatic network actuators (Pneu-Net) of equivalent weight, and even less pressure compared to other actuators with non-linear bending behavior; (2) The control of the device is examined by validating the relationship between pressure and the bending angle, as well as the interaction force and pressure at a fixed bending angle; (3) A soft robotic gripper comprising three actuators is designed. Enveloping and pinch grasping experiments are conducted on various shapes, which demonstrate the gripper's potential in handling a wide range of objects for numerous applications; and (4) A gesture recognition algorithm is developed to control the gripper using electromyogram (EMG) signals from the user's muscles. In terms of actuation, the Joule heating effect and heterogeneous composites endow the device with large deformation under low-power consumption. As for sensing, highly conductive MXene/CNT paper contributes to superior sensitivity over a large linear range. Thereon, a portable soft tactile actuator is constructed to grasp and manipulate objects based on manual operation. Moreover, a soft petal actuator that mimics the feeding action of flytrap was prepared to actively sense and grasp external objects, where its weight and size can also be reflected in real time. Furthermore, integration of the actuators with human hands can enable its real-time control via bending the fingers. The microthruster is generally chosen as the actuator of the drag‐free satellite control system, and the layout directly affects the stability of the satellite control. Due to the extremely rigorous objectives of drag‐free control, a design method for the redundant thruster layout is proposed in this paper to improve the control stability of the satellite and reduce the allocation error of the control system. First, the factors corresponding to the allocation errors of redundant thruster layouts are analyzed. And the minimum number of thrusters required for satellite control is determined through the calculation method of thruster redundancy. Then, the design criterion of reducing the allocation error and increasing the satellite control stability is put forward. To demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the design method proposed in this paper, the space gravitational wave detection satellite is taken as a simulation case. Thrust distribution models corresponding to the designed thruster layouts are established, and the results show that a proper layout can not only improve stability but also reduce fuel consumption. The primary objective of this paper is to address the challenge of designing finite-time fault-tolerant control mechanisms for nonlinear flexible spacecraft systems, which are particularly vulnerable to randomized actuator faults. Diverging from traditional methodologies, our research harnesses the capabilities of the Takagi–Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy framework. A unique feature of our model is the representation of actuator failures as stochastic signals following a Markov process, thereby offering a robust solution for addressing timeliness concerns. In this paper, we introduce a generalized reciprocally convex inequality that includes adjustable parameters, broadening the scope of previous results by accommodating them as special cases. Through the amalgamation of this enhanced inequality and flexible independent parameters, we propose an innovative controller design strategy. This approach establishes a stability standard that guarantees mean-square H ∞ performance. In order to validate the efficacy of the suggested strategy, we present a numerical illustration involving a nonlinear spacecraft system, showcasing the practical advantages and feasibility of our proposed technique. This paper experimentally investigates the performance of piezoelectric force actuators. Using the same encapsulated piezoelectric stack, an inertial-type actuator and a frame-type actuator are constructed for performance comparison. The experimental results are also used to validate the recently established actuator models, whilst the mechanical and piezoelectrical parameters of the models are experimentally identified. The performance of the actuators is described by the transmitted force(s) and input power flow from the actuators to the base structure with reference to the same electrical input voltage to the stack. The validation is deemed successful due to the strong agreement observed between the measured and predicted actuator performances. Additionally, it is discovered that the frame-type actuator has the capacity to produce significantly higher transmitted forces and input power flow to the base structure compared to the inertial-type actuator. The mechanism underlying the performance disparity between these two types of actuators is also examined. This paper reviews the process of research, development and production of a system for the active orientation of small screws. The parts feature two different shapes on each side, which is suitable for machine vision inspection and not for classical vibratory bowl traps. When a part enters the jig, it is rotated at an angle of 90° for inspection. Based on the orientation, it may stay in this position or be rotated at 180°. This allows for active orientation; regardless of how the screw is presented to the camera, it is always positioned in the correct orientation by a servo mechanism. The main challenges are related to the small dimensions of the part. First of all, it has a diameter of only 3 mm and a length of 7 mm. A vibratory bowl feeder is used only for feeding and there is no orientation functionality in it. Afterwards, a vibratory linear feeder is placed so the ready parts are stacked and, thus, some buffer is created. This is important because vibratory bowl feeders are known for having unequal productivity in time and this could be solved by the linear feeder. Another key difficulty is the quality of the source parts. They are produced by several suppliers and sometimes there are chips and other remnants alongside the packages with screws. The main contribution of this paper is the development and demonstration of a novel methodology that can be followed to develop a simulation twin of a railway track switch system to test the functionality in a digital environment. This is important because, globally, railway track switches are used to allow trains to change routes; they are a key part of all railway networks. However, because track switches are single points of failure and safety-critical, their inability to operate correctly can cause significant delays and concomitant costs. In order to better understand the dynamic behaviour of switches during operation, this paper has developed a full simulation twin of a complete track switch system. The approach fuses finite element for the rail bending and motion, with physics-based models of the electromechanical actuator system and the control system. Hence, it provides researchers and engineers the opportunity to explore and understand the design space around the dynamic operation of new switches and switch machines before they are built. This is useful for looking at the modification or monitoring of existing switches, and it becomes even more important when new switch concepts are being considered and evaluated. The simulation is capable of running in real time or faster meaning designs can be iterated and checked interactively. The paper describes the modelling approach, demonstrates the methodology by developing the system model for a novel "REPOINT" switch system, and evaluates the system level performance against the dynamic performance requirements for the switch. In the context of that case study, it is found that the proposed new actuation system as designed can meet (and exceed) the system performance requirements, and that the fault tolerance built into the actuation ensures continued operation after a single actuator failure. This paper addresses the challenge of adaptive control for nonstrict-feedback nonlinear systems that involve input delay, actuator faults, and external disturbance. To deal with the complexities arising from input delay and unknown functions, we have incorporated Pade approximation and radial basis function neural networks, respectively. An adaptive controller has been developed by utilizing the Lyapunov stability theorem and the backstepping approach. The suggested method guarantees that the tracking error converges to a compact neighborhood that contains the origin and that every signal in the closed-loop system is semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method, an electromechanical system application example, and a numerical example are provided. Additionally, comparative analysis was conducted between the Pade approximation proposed in this paper and the auxiliary systems in the existing method. This paper introduces an Event-B formal model of the adaptive exterior light system for cars, a case study proposed in the context of the ABZ2020 conference. The system describes the different provided lights and the conditions under which they are switched on/off in order to improve the visibility of the driver without dazzling the oncoming ones. The system can be viewed as a lights controller that reads different information form the available sensors (key state, exterior luminosity, etc.) and takes the adequate actions by acting on the actuators of the lights in order to ensure a good visibility for the driver according to the information read. Our model is built using stepwise refinement with the Event-B method. We consider all the features of the case study, all proof obligations have been discharged using the Rodin provers. Our model has been validated using ProB by applying the different provided scenarios. In the face of rising population, erratic climate, resource depletion, and increased exposure to natural hazards, environmental monitoring is increasingly important. Satellite data form most of our observations of Earth. On-the-ground observations based on in situ sensor systems are crucial for these remote measurements to be dependable. Providing open-source options to rapidly prototype environmental datalogging systems allows quick advancement of research and monitoring programs. This paper introduces Loom, a development environment for low-power Arduino-programmable microcontrollers. Loom accommodates a range of integrated components including sensors, various datalogging formats, internet connectivity (including Wi-Fi and 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE)), radio telemetry, timing mechanisms, debugging information, and power conservation functions. Additionally, Loom includes unique applications for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. By establishing modular, reconfigurable, and extensible functionality across components, Loom reduces development time for prototyping new systems. Bug fixes and optimizations achieved in one project benefit all projects that use Loom, enhancing efficiency. Although not a one-size-fits-all solution, this approach has empowered a small group of developers to support larger multidisciplinary teams designing diverse environmental sensing applications for water, soil, atmosphere, agriculture, environmental hazards, scientific monitoring, and education. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) play a significant role in ocean-related research fields as tools for human exploration and the development of marine resources. However, the uncertainty of the underwater environment and the complexity of underwater motion pose significant challenges to the fault-tolerant control of AUV actuators. This paper presents a fault-tolerant control strategy for AUV actuators based onTakagi and Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy logic and pseudo-inverse quadratic programming under control constraints, aimed at addressing potential actuator faults. Firstly, considering the steady-state performance and dynamic performance of the control system, a T-S fuzzy controller is designed. Next, based on the redundant configuration of the actuators, the propulsion system is normalized, and the fault-tolerant control of AUV actuators is achieved using the pseudo-inverse method under thrust allocation. When control is constrained, a quadratic programming approach is used to compensate for the input control quantity. Finally, the effectiveness of the fuzzy control and fault-tolerant control allocation methods studied in this paper is validated through mathematical simulation. The experimental results indicate that in various fault scenarios, the pseudo-inverse combined with a nonlinear quadratic programming algorithm can compensate for the missing control inputs due to control constraints, ensuring the normal thrust of AUV actuators and achieving the expected fault-tolerant effect. Featured Application: This work addresses issues related to unknown disturbances and actuator saturation during quadrotor UAV flight. This paper introduces a nonlinear dynamic inversion control algorithm designed to address unknown disturbances and actuator saturation issues in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attitude control. The algorithm is based on a combination of finite-time disturbance observer and anti-saturation auxiliary system, which ensures the rapid convergence of attitude tracking error. Firstly, based on the Newton–Euler equations, this paper establishes a model of the attitude system for quadrotor UAVs, and this paper eliminates the small-angle flight assumption. Secondly, considering the actuator saturation problem, an anti-saturation auxiliary control system is designed to shorten the time when the control volume is in the saturation interval and achieve finite-time convergence of the attitude error. And then, to improve the robustness of the controller, this paper proposes a disturbance observer based on the finite-time stability theory, which achieves a continuous smooth output of the observation results by introducing a hyperbolic tangent function in the observer, so that the observation error can be converged to zero in a finite time. In this paper, we focus on a general linear time-invariant multiagent system with heterogeneous actuator saturation to answer the main question: how to achieve global consensus under the premise of asymptotically null controllable with bounded controls of each agent so as to make breakthroughs from the perspectives of global consensus, heterogeneous actuator saturation, communication noises, and distributed characteristic preservation. We introduce a distributed control algorithm that incorporates a redesigned saturation function featuring a decentralized dynamic saturation level to achieve these objectives. Each component of the dynamic saturation level self-updates according to an adaptive strategy. The proposed method effectively eliminates heterogeneous actuator saturation by carefully selecting both the constant and time-varying saturation parameters in the adaptive strategy of the dynamic saturation level. Our approach achieves both state feedback--based and output feedback--based global consensus, with the latter utilizing a special coordinate decomposition. Electro-hydraulic actuators have witnessed significant development over recent years due to their remarkable abilities to perform complex and dynamic movements. Integrating such an actuator in humanoids is highly beneficial, leading to a humanoid capable of performing complex tasks requiring high force. This highlights the importance of safety, especially since high power output and safe interaction seem to be contradictory; the greater the robot's ability to generate high dynamic movements, the more difficult it is to achieve safety, as this requires managing a large amount of motor energy before, during, and after the collision. No matter what technology or algorithm is used to achieve safety, none can be implemented without a stable control system. Hence, one of the main parameters remains the quality and reliability of the robot's control architecture through handling a huge amount of data without system failure. This paper addresses the development of a stable control architecture that ensures, in later stages, that the safety algorithm is implemented correctly. The optimum control architecture to utilize and ensure the maximum benefit of electro-hydraulic actuators in humanoid robots is one of the important subjects in this field. For a stable and safe functioning of the humanoid, the development of the control architecture and the communication between the different components should adhere to some requirements such as stability, robustness, speed, and reduced complexity, ensuring the easy addition of numerous components. This paper presents the developed control architecture for an underdeveloped electro-hydraulic actuated humanoid. The proposed solution has the advantage of being a distributed, real-time, open-source, modular, and adaptable control architecture, enabling simple integration of numerous sensors and actuators to emulate human actions and safely interact with them. The contribution of this paper is an enhancement of the updated rate compared to other humanoids by 20% and by 40 % in the latency of the master. The results demonstrate the potential of using EtherCAT fieldbus and open-source software to develop a stable robot control architecture capable of integrating safety and security algorithms in later stages. This paper investigates the adaptive neural network (NN) tracking control problem for stochastic nonlinear systems with multiple actuator constraints and full-state constraints. The issue of system full-state constraints is tackled by a generalized barrier Lyapunov function (GBLF), and the output constraints of the system are considered to be in the form of time-varying functions, which are more in line with the needs of real physical systems. The NN approximation technique is utilized to overcome the influence of the uncertainty term on controller design due to randomness. Based on the backstepping technique, a neural adaptive fixed-time tracking control strategy is designed. Under the designed control strategy, the tracking accuracy of the controlled system can reach the expectation in a fixed time. The multi-actuator constraints are converted into a generalized mathematical model to simplify the controller design process. Using the characteristics of the hyperbolic tangent function, a new function called practical virtual control signal is designed using the virtual control signal as the input. Due to the saturation constraint property of the hyperbolic tangent function, it is theoretically ensured that no state of the system exceeds the constraints through to the new form of the virtual controller. Using the adaptive controller constructed in this paper, the controlled system is semi-global fixed-time stabilized in probability (SGFSP). Soft robots with good deformability and adaptability have important prospects in the bionics and intelligence field. However, current research into soft robots is primarily limited to the study of actuators and ignores the integrated use of functional devices and actuators. To enrich the functions of soft robots and expand their application fields, it is necessary to integrate various functional electronic devices into soft robots to perform diverse functions during dynamic deformation. Therefore, this paper discusses methods and strategies to manufacture optical stimuli-responsive soft actuators and integrate them into functional devices for soft robots. Specifically, laser cutting allows us to fabricate an optically responsive actuator structure, e.g., the curling direction can be controlled by adjusting the direction of the cutting line. Actuators with different bending curvatures, including nonbending, can be obtained by adjusting the cutting depth, cutting width, and the spacing of the cutting line, which makes it easy to obtain a folded structure. Thus, various actuators with complex shape patterns can be obtained. In addition, we demonstrate a fabrication scheme for a worm-like soft robot integrated with functional devices (LEDs are used in this paper). The local nonbending design provides an asymmetric structure that provides driving power and avoids damage to the functional circuit caused by the large deformation during movement. This paper presents methods for the actuation, measurement, and control of a magnetic resonance imaging- and radiation-compatible single-axis translatory actuation system. As an exemplary demanding use case, the axis is developed for a robotic phantom for evaluating emitted radiation doses of radiotherapy devices. For this, the robot has to follow given three-dimensional trajectories of patients' movements with an accuracy of 200 µm. For enabling use of magnetic resonance imaging, actuation of the robot is realized by hydraulic transmission without any metal parts or electrical components at the imaging side. The hydraulic axis is developed, built-up, and tested. In order to compensate for deviations from the targeted actuation trajectory resulting from tolerances, friction, and non-linearities in the system, a combination of photogrammetric measurement and iterative learning control is applied. The developed photogrammetric system is capable of determining the robot's position with systematic errors of 35 µm and stochastic errors of 0.3 µm. Different types of iterative learning control methods are applied, parameterized, and tested. With this, the hydraulically actuated axis is able to follow given trajectories with maximum errors below 130 µm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ride comfort is an important indicator to evaluate the dynamic performance of automotive vehicles. One method for improving ride comfort is to incorporate an active actuator into the passive suspension. However, the improvement is closely linked with the required actuation power and force. Increased actuation requirements may lead to higher energy consumption and a larger actuator size. To enhance the trade-off between ride comfort and active actuation requirements, a new design approach for searching for the optimal passive-active-combined suspension across many different mechanical component layouts incorporating an inerter is proposed in this paper. Compared with traditional designs where the suspension is limited to a few special layouts, via this approach the optimal passive part among all network possibilities with pre-determined numbers of each element type (springs, dampers and inerters), and optimal controller parameters of the parallel active actuator can be identified. Considering a quarter-car model, with a benchmark combined active-passive suspension in which the passive part is a spring-damper, the optimal inerter-based suspension can reduce the active force by more than 48% and regenerate 6 W more average power in the active part while achieving the same ride comfort. Note that in this case, two constraints are always considered: the road-holding ability (as indicated by the dynamic tyre load) and suspension travel of the identified suspension will not be worse than those of the benchmark suspension. The optimal trade-off obtained with this approach serves as a powerful tool in the automotive suspension design as it provides guidance on the following three aspects: the optimal ride comfort, the minimum power consumption and the feasibility of specific actuation requirements, where the second point is obtained in conjunction with the power conservation theorem proposed in this paper which proves that the total power consumed by the passive and active parts will not vary with changes in the passive part and active controller parameters. This paper proposes a new topology optimization formulation for obtaining shape memory alloy actuators which are designed with prescribed two-way transforming shapes. The actuation behaviors of shape memory alloy structures are governed by austenite-martensite phase transformations effected by thermal-mechanical loading processes; therefore, to realize the precise geometric shape variations of shape memory alloy actuators, traditional methods involve iteration processes including heuristic structural design, numerical predictions and experimental validation. Although advanced structural optimization methods such as topology optimization have been used to design three-dimensional (3D) shape memory alloy actuators, the maximization/minimization of quantities such as structural compliance or inaccurate stroke distances has usually been selected as the optimization objective to obtain feasible solutions. To bridge the gap between precise shape-morphing requirements and efficient shape memory alloy actuator designs, this paper formulates optimization criteria with quantitatively desired geometric shapes, and investigates the automatic designs of two-way prescribed shape morphing shape memory alloy structures based on the proposed topology optimization method. The super element method and adjoint method are used to derive the analytical sensitivities of the objective functions with respect to the design variables. In the realm of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) and teleoperation applications, haptic feedback plays a role in enhancing task performance. One of the main goals of this study is to simplify haptic device hardware while improving its capacity to provide various stimuli at different intensities. In response to these challenges, this research introduces the Pneumatic Unit Cell (PUC), a soft pneumatically driven device—a hollow silicone cylinder with the ability to provide both static-pressure and vibrotactile feedback. Furthermore, the Pneumatic Unit Cell's design simplicity has the potential for scalability, modularity, and the flexibility to mount the device on any part of the human body. The focus of the current paper is to study PUCs as actuators and lay the foundation for future perceptual studies. The characterization studies encompass the fabrication and verification of the fabrication accuracy through dimensional measurements, characterizing PUCs under static-pressure conditions (measuring the free deflection and blocking force) and frequency conditions (measuring the free deflection). In the static-pressure conditions, we applied pressures ranging from 0 to 40 kPa to measure the free deflection and from 0 to 30 kPa to measure the blocking force. In the frequency conditions, we applied pressures of 10, 20, and 30 kPa with inflation/deflation rates varying between 0.5 Hz and 100 Hz. The measurements of free deflection under static-pressure conditions revealed that 0.9 mm and 1.2 mm PUCs exhibit a linear increase in free deflection with an increase in inflation pressure. The results of free-deflection measurements under the frequency conditions indicate a direct relationship between the free-deflection magnitude and applied pressure. The results also demonstrate an inverse relationship to the frequency of inflation/deflation. The characterization results demonstrate a broad range of free deflection observed under both static-pressure and frequency conditions, encouraging the potential application of Pneumatic Unit Cell actuators as haptic devices. This review paper discusses the development trends of agricultural autonomous all-terrain vehicles (AATVs) from four cornerstones, such as (1) control strategy and algorithms, (2) sensors, (3) data communication tools and systems, and (4) controllers and actuators, based on 221 papers published in peer-reviewed journals for 1960–2023. The paper highlights a comparative analysis of commonly employed control methods and algorithms by highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. It gives comparative analyses of sensors, data communication tools, actuators, and hardware-embedded controllers. In recent years, many novel developments in AATVs have been made due to advancements in wireless and remote communication, high-speed data processors, sensors, computer vision, and broader applications of AI tools. Technical advancements in fully autonomous control of AATVs remain limited, requiring research into accurate estimation of terrain mechanics, identifying uncertainties, and making fast and accurate decisions, as well as utilizing wireless communication and edge cloud computing. This paper addresses the co-design of event-triggered dynamic output-feedback (DOF) control for discrete-time linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. Two independent event-triggering schemes are introduced to determine when to transmit data from the sensor to the controller and from the controller to the actuator channels. Enhanced conditions employing linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are derived to establish constructive criteria for simultaneously designing the gain-scheduled DOF controller and the triggering mechanisms, ensuring the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop LPV system's origin. Additionally, a convex optimisation problem is proposed to enlarge the inter-event sampling on the independent channels of sensor-to-controller and controller-to-actuator. Radial ribs are important supporting parts of umbrella antenna, and its shape is a crucial factor affecting the overall reflector accuracy. Considering the difficulty of in-orbit shape sensing, a fiber-optic shape sensing (FOSS) method for the radial rib is presented in this paper, then on the basis of FOSS a shape active control method for the radial rib driven by Macro-Fiber Composite actuators is proposed. Firstly, combining the deformation characteristics of the radial rib structure, an improved Ko displacement algorithm is proposed for its shape sensing using distributed fiber-optic. Then, establish the shape active control model with the Influence-Coefficient-Matrix method, and propose a closed-loop shape active control method with FOSS as feedback for the radial rib. In this paper, the optimization problem of solving control voltage is established by using the Least-Square method, and Root-Mean-Square error is taken as the convergence condition. Finally, numerical simulation and experiment show that the relative error of the shape sensing with fiber-optic is less than 5%, and the shape accuracy of radial rib after control is improved by more than 90% to reach submillimeter level, which verifies the effectiveness of the radial rib shape active control method based on FOSS.
