Green nanocomposites combining cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), and lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were designed and applied for the first time as ternary protective coatings on cellulosic materials, i.e., substrates mainly composed of cellulose. All the nanostructures were obtained from elephant grass biomass. CNFs and CNCs are less than 10 nm thick and present a filament-like morphology, while LNPs are spheres with an average diameter of less than 100 nm. The use of water-based nanoparticle dispersions is a facile and greener alternative to synthetic varnishes usually based on toxic organic solvents. Moreover, the coatings from renewable sources were chemically stable; showed high compatibility with wood, paper, and fabric; and preserved the roughness and surface morphology of the substrates after application. Moist-heat accelerated aging and UV-shielding assays revealed that the nanocellulose/nanolignin coatings were able to protect the coated cellulosic substrates against degradation. The wettability of nanocomposite-coated substrates could be tailored and reduced to produce hydrophobic surfaces by applying additional layers of water-based carnauba wax nanoparticles, which are also sustainable. Additionally, two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy mapping confirmed the reversibility of the coating application, as the nanocomposite layers could be easily removed from the cellulosic substrates by water-loaded cleaning hydrogels. Therefore, the functional protective coating introduced here represents an environmentally friendly and nontoxic approach for the conservation of cellulosic artifacts in general, including cultural heritage objects based on paper, wood, and fabric. An amino functionalized paper-based material that utilized amino functionalized polymer particles as sensing probes and adsorption sites was fabricated via internal sizing technology for application in formaldehyde detection and adsorption. A large specific surface area and the porous structure of the paper fibers enable the application of the composite paper-based material as a sensor at low concentrations of primary amine groups. The material reacts with low levels of formaldehyde, resulting in a concentration-based change in the pH, which is rapidly expressed as a color change. After exposure to formaldehyde (0.02 mg/m 3 ) for 10 min, the color of the composite paper-based material changed from pink to brown, demonstrating the high sensitivity of the material, and this transition could be clearly observed using the naked eye. Additionally, the composite paper-based material acts as an adsorbent at a high content of amino groups, owing to a rapid addition reaction with formaldehyde, exhibiting a high adsorption capacity. Considering the high sensitivity, adsorption capacity, and adsorption speed for formaldehyde, the as-developed composite paper-based material exhibits promising application potential in the field of formaldehyde detection and adsorption.

Paper-integrated configuration with miniaturized functionality represents one of the future main green electronics. In this study, a paper-based respiration sensor was prepared using a multiwalled carbon nanotube-templated nickel porphyrin covalent organic framework (MWCNTs@COF NiP-Ph ) as an electrical identification component and pencil-drawn graphite electric circuits as interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). The MWCNTs@COF NiP-Ph not only inherited the high gas sensing performance of porphyrin and the aperture induction effect of COFs but also overcame the shielding effect between phases through the MWCNT template. Furthermore, it possessed highly exposed M-N 4 metallic active sites and unique periodic porosity, thereby effectively addressing the key technical issue of room-temperature sensing for the respiration sensor. Meanwhile, the introduction of a pencil-drawing approach on common printing papers facilitates the inexpensive and simple manufacturing of the as-fabricated graphite IDE. Based on the above advantages, the MWCNTs@COF NiP-Ph respiration sensor had the characteristics of wide detection range (1-500 ppm), low detection limit (30 ppb), acceptable flexibility for toluene, and rapid response/recovery time (32 s/116 s). These advancements facilitated the integration of the respiration sensor into surgical masks and clothes with maximum functionality at a minimized size and weight. Moreover, the primary internal mechanism of COF NiP-Ph for this efficient toluene detection was investigated through in situ FTIR spectra, thereby directly elucidating that the chemisorption interaction of oxygen modulated the depletion layers, resulting in alterations in sensor resistance upon exposure to the target gas. The encouraging results revealed the feasibility of employing a paper-sensing system as a wearable platform in green electronics.

This study explores the fusion of a field-effect transistor (FET), a paper-based analytical cartridge, and the computational power of deep learning (DL) for quantitative biosensing via kinetic analyses. The FET sensors address the low sensitivity challenge observed in paper analytical devices, enabling electrical measurements with kinetic data. The paper-based cartridge eliminates the need for surface chemistry required in FET sensors, ensuring economical operation (cost < $0.15/test). The DL analysis mitigates chronic challenges of FET biosensors such as sample matrix interference, by leveraging kinetic data from target-specific bioreactions. In our proof-of-concept demonstration, our DL-based analyses showcased a coefficient of variation of <6.46% and a decent concentration measurement correlation with an r 2 value of >0.976 for cholesterol testing when blindly compared to results obtained from a CLIA-certified clinical laboratory. These integrated technologies have the potential to advance FET-based biosensors, potentially transforming point-of-care diagnostics and at-home testing through enhanced accessibility, ease-of-use, and accuracy.

Due to the heterogeneity of recycled paper materials and the production conditions, pollutants in papermaking wastewater fluctuate sharply over time. Quality control of the papermaking wastewater treatment process (PWTP) is challenging and costly. As regulations are also growing about the environmental effects of the PWTP on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, energy consumption, etc., the PWTP formulates a complex multiobjective optimization problem. This research established a multiagent deep reinforcement learning framework to simultaneously optimize process cost, energy consumption, and GHG emission in the PWTP, subjected to the effluent quality, to realize economic, energy, and environmental (3E) goals. The biological treatment process of wastewater in paper mills was simulated using benchmark simulation model no. 1 (BSM1). The data generated based on the BSM manual was utilized for model training, and real data acquired from a local papermaking factory was used to estimate the model performance. The results show that the proposed method outperforms conventional techniques in identifying the best control strategies for multiple targets.

The urgent need for real-time and noninvasive monitoring of health-associated biochemical parameters has motivated the development of wearable sweat sensors. Existing electrochemical sensors show promise in real-time analysis of various chemical biomarkers. These sensors often rely on labels and redox probes to generate and amplify the signals for the detection and quantification of analytes with limited sensitivity. In this study, we introduce a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based biochemical sensor to quantify a molecular biomarker in sweat using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which eliminates the need for labels or redox probes. The molecularly imprinted biosensor can achieve sensitive and specific detection of cortisol at concentrations as low as 1 pM, 1000-fold lower than previously reported MIP cortisol sensors. We integrated multimodal electrochemical sensors with an iontophoresis sweat extraction module and paper microfluidics for real-time sweat analysis. Several parameters can be simultaneously quantified, including sweat volume, secretion rate, sodium ion, and cortisol concentration. Paper microfluidic modules not only quantify sweat volume and secretion rate but also facilitate continuous sweat analysis without user intervention. While we focus on cortisol sensing as a proof-of-concept, the molecularly imprinted wearable sensors can be extended to real-time detection of other biochemicals, such as protein biomarkers and therapeutic drugs.

Exhaled breath electrochemical sensing is a promising biomedical technology owing to its portability, painlessness, cost-effectiveness, and user-friendliness. Here, we present a novel approach for target analysis in exhaled breath by integrating a comfortable paper-based collector into an N95 face mask, providing a universal solution for analyzing several biomarkers. As a model analyte, we detected SARS-CoV-2 spike protein from the exhaled breath by sampling the target analyte into the collector, followed by its detection out of the N95 face mask using a magnetic bead-based electrochemical immunosensor. This approach was designed to avoid any contact between humans and the chemicals. To simulate human exhaled breath, untreated saliva samples were nebulized on the paper collector, revealing a detection limit of 1 ng/mL and a wide linear range of 3.7-10,000 ng/mL. Additionally, the developed immunosensor exhibited high selectivity toward the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, compared to other airborne microorganisms, and the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein. Accuracy assessments were conducted by analyzing the simulated breath samples spiked with varying concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, resulting in satisfactory recovery values (ranging from 97 ± 4 to 118 ± 1%). Finally, the paper-based hybrid immunosensor was successfully applied for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in real human exhaled breath samples. The position of the collector in the N95 mask was evaluated as well as the ability of this paper-based analytical tool to identify the positive patient.

Homocysteine (Hcy) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are critical biomarkers for numerous chronic diseases, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being the most prevalent. The ability to simultaneously detect both biomarkers in point-of-care settings is in high demand for CVD early diagnosis and prevention. Herein, we prepared the eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) nanoparticles decorated with p -phenylenediamine (PPD) on the surface to facilitate the subsequent attachment of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to achieve EGaIn-PPD@Au, which was modified on the screen-printed electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs). Aptamers that are specific to Hcy and CRP were then immobilized on the EGaIn-PPD@Au surface to achieve the sensing interface on ePADs. The presence of EGaIn-PPD@Au significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity, leading to amplified electrochemical signals. This aptasensor demonstrated high specificity, capable of detecting Hcy in a range of 1-50 μM with a detection limit of 0.22 μM, and the detection range for CRP was 1-100 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.039 ng/mL. The aptasensor also effectively detected Hcy and CRP in clinical saliva samples, yielding an area under the curve (AUC) of about 0.80 when the individual biomarker was considered and 0.93 when both biomarkers were taken into account. The positive correlation observed between salivary and blood concentrations of Hcy and CRP, coupled with their association with cardiovascular disease (CVD), suggested the potential of this methodology as a noninvasive point-of-care strategy for the early diagnosis of CVD.

Cervical cancer is among the most common malignant tumors in women. The development of rapid screening techniques plays an important role in early screening for cancer treatment. We have developed an HPV screening method, which effectively combines the high-efficiency nucleic acid enrichment of chitosan-modified filter paper and the rapid visual detectability of colorimetric LAMP, along with the enhancement of the tolerance ability of the pH-sensitive LAMP reagent to acidic original samples, making the detection of HPV 16/18 easy to carry out and reliable, which is helpful for the epidemiological prevention and control strategies of HPV-induced cancer. This technique can simultaneously exhibit the " in situ amplification" capability of chitosan-modified filter paper and the nontemperature cycle dependence of visual LAMP detection. Therefore, DNA extraction and amplification can be performed efficiently and quickly within a single reaction where all DNA is concentrated in the QF paper disc. By embedding amino-modified filter paper into the plastic chip, a simple and reliable disposable chip was prepared for rapid HPV16 and HPV18 detection from clinical endometrial samples, and the results were 100% consistent with clinical diagnosis. More importantly, even after the sample was diluted 100-fold, HPV16/18-infected cells could be accurately identified, showing the advantages of the system in early cancer screening. Moreover, for endometrial samples containing plenty of cells, the filter paper could be used to enrich cells by filtration, preventing the acidic fluid from impacting pH-induced colorimetric LAMP detection and realizing direct amplification for HPV identification without nucleic acid extraction. This easy-to-operate system that can analyze a wide range of samples will be suitable for routine on-site HPV screening, dramatically extending the applications and utility for rapid, near-patient nucleic acid testing.

A strategy for the bioorthogonal immobilization of proteins onto commercially available filter paper is presented. Recently, a two-step approach has been described that relies on covalent immobilization of a linker molecule to paper, followed by enzyme-mediated conjugation of a protein of interest containing an enzyme-recognition tag. Here, this strategy was expanded by evaluating four different chemical and chemoenzymatic reactions and investigating paper loading efficiency and orthogonality. Enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was used as a model protein to allow quantification of protein loading via fluorescence imaging. Two approaches were identified that showed significantly increased loading efficiencies compared with the previously applied conjugation strategy. Additionally, all four methods were proven orthogonal to each other, allowing simultaneous immobilization of a mixture of proteins to a premodified assembly of two paper sheets.

Total antioxidants play a crucial role in human health, and detection of the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) has broad application prospects in fields such as food safety, environmental assessment, and disease diagnosis. However, a long detection time, cumbersome steps, high cost, reliance on professional equipment, and nonportability still remain significant challenges. In this work, an efficient strategy of point-of-care testing (POCT) of the TAC in body fluids by nanozyme-catalyzed colorimetric paper-based microfluidic sensors is proposed. The paper-based microfluidic sensors coupled with a smartphone can reduce testing costs and provide portability. The nanozyme prepared by the solvothermal method presents Michaelis constants of 0.11 and 0.129 mM for H 2 O 2 and TMB, respectively. A method for immobilizing nanozymes and chromogenic agents on a paper-based microfluidic chip is established. Based on smartphone photography and image grayscale extraction, the TAC can be qualitatively detected with a detection limit and linear range of 33.4 and 50-700 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed sensor can realize the one-step quantitative analysis of the TAC in body fluids (blood, saliva, and sweat) within 15 min. The proposed nanozyme-catalyzed colorimetric paper-based microfluidic sensors presented in this study exhibit promising application prospects in the fields of biochemical analysis and POCT.

In cancer metastasis, where mortality rates remain high despite advancements in medical treatments, understanding the molecular pathways and cellular dynamics underlying tumor spread is critical for devising more effective therapeutic strategies. Here, a folding paper system was proposed and developed to mimic native tumor microenvironment. This system, composed of 7 stacked layers of paper enclosed in a holder, allows for the culture of cancer cells under conditions mimicking those found in solid tumors, including limited oxygen and nutrients. Because of the migratory capabilities of cancer cells, the cells in the center layer could migrated to outer layers of the paper stack, enabling the differentiation of cells based on their migratory potential. Subsequent gene expression analysis, conducted through RT-PCR and RNA sequencing, revealed significant correlations between cancer cell migration distance and the expression of genes associated with hypoxia, metabolism, ATP production, and cellular process. Moreover, our study identified cells with aggressive phenotypic traits from the outer layers of the paper stack, highlighting the potential of this system for enabling the study of aggressive cancer cell characteristics. Validation of the folding paper system against clinical carcinoma tissue demonstrated its ability to faithfully mimic the native tumor microenvironment. Overall, our findings underscore the utility of the folding paper system as a valuable tool for investigating and identifying critical molecular pathways involved in cancer metastasis.

Leptospirosis is a re-emerging infectious disease that presents a diagnostic enigma for clinicians with frequent misdiagnosis due to lack of rapid and accurate diagnostic tests, as the current methods are encumbered by inherent limitations. The development of a diagnostic sensor with a sample-in-result-out capability is pivotal for prompt diagnosis. Herein, we developed a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (spin-μPAD) featuring a sample-in-result-out fashion for the detection of Leptospira specific urinary biomarker, sph2 sphingomyelinase, crucial for noninvasive point-of-care testing. Fabrication of paper devices involved precise photolithography techniques, ensuring a high degree of reproducibility and replicability. By optimizing the device's configuration and protein components, a remarkable sensitivity and specificity was achieved for detecting leptospiral sph2 in urine, even at low concentrations down to 1.5 fg/mL, with an assay time of 15 min. Further, the spin-μPAD was validated with 20 clinical samples, suspected of leptospirosis including other febrile illnesses, and compared with gold standard microscopic agglutination test, culture, Lepto IgM ELISA, darkfield microscopy, and Leptocheck WB spot test. In contrast to commercial diagnostic tools, the spin-μPAD was noninvasive, rapid, easy to use, specific, sensitive, and cost-effective. The results highlight the potential of this innovative spin-μPAD for an efficient and dependable approach to noninvasive leptospirosis diagnosis, addressing critical needs in the realms of public health and clinical settings.

Neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) produced from infection or vaccination play an important role in acquired immunity. Determining virus-specific nAb titers is a useful tool for measuring aquired immunity in an individual. The standard methods to do so rely on titrating serum samples against live virus and monitoring viral infection in cultured cells which requires high biosafety level containment. The surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) reduces the biohazards and it is suitable for designing rapid test device in a lateral flow assay (LFA) format. Here, we introduce the fabrication and development of a unique paper-based LFA device for determining the level of SARS-CoV-2 nAb in a sample with a semiquantitative direct colorimetric readout. A LFA-based gradient assay design was used to facilitate the sVNT, where the spike glycoprotein receptor binding domain (RBD) and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) stand in as proxies for viruses and cells, respectively. The gradient assay employed multiple test dots of ACE2 spotted in increasing concentration along the sample flow path and gold nanoparticle-conjugated RBD for readout. In this way, the number of developed spots is inversely proportional to the concentration of nAbs present in the sample. The assay was tested with both standard solutions of nAb as well as human serum samples. We have demonstrated that the device can effectively provide semiquantitative test results of nAbs by direct instrument-free colorimetric detection.

New strategies for the simultaneous and portable detection of multiple enzyme activities are highly desirable for clinical diagnosis and home care. However, the methods developed thus far generally suffer from high costs, cumbersome procedures, and heavy reliance on large-scale instruments. To satisfy the actual requirements of rapid, accurate, and on-site detection of multiple enzyme activities, we report herein a smartphone-assisted programmable microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) that utilizes colorimetric and photothermal signals for simultaneous, accurate, and visual quantitative detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). Specifically, the operation of this μPAD sensing platform is based on two sequential steps. Cobalt-doped mesoporous cerium oxide (Co-m-CeO 2 ) with remarkable peroxidase-like activities under neutral conditions first catalytically decomposes H 2 O 2 for effectively converting colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB). The subsequent addition of ALP or BChE to their respective substrates produces a reducing substance that can somewhat inhibit the oxTMB transformation for compromised colorimetric and photothermal signals of oxTMB. Notably, these two-step bioenzyme-nanozyme cascade reactions strongly support the straightforward and excellent processability of this platform, which exhibit lower detection limits for ALP and BChE with a detection limit for BChE an order of magnitude lower than those of the other reported paper-based detection methods. The practicability and efficiency of this platform are further demonstrated through the analysis of clinical serum samples. This innovative platform exhibits great potential as a facile yet robust approach for simultaneous, accurate, and on-site visual detection of multiple enzyme activities in authentic samples.

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have attracted emerging attention as fluorescent and light-absorbing materials for next-generation optoelectronics due to their outstanding properties and cost-efficiency. However, PQD thin film suffers significant instability due to structure and material failures, which hinders their application in flexible and reliable PQD-based advanced wearable devices. Herein, we use commercial cellulose fiber-based filter paper as a substrate to synthesize PQDs in situ and fabricate PQD-paper free-standing flexible composite film. The abundant hydroxy capping ligands of cellulose fibers and the unique dense network structure of the filter paper can facilitate confined crystallization, forming strong interactions between the PQDs and substrate, the unpackaged PQD composite film showed extraordinary stability (>30 days) in the air with high humidity (90%). Meanwhile, the strong interaction between PQDs and paper enables an ultrasimple drop-cast synthesis process with excellent process tolerance, making it customizable and easy to scale up (10 cm in diameter). Due to the uniformly dispersed PQDs on cellulose fibers of the substrate, the composite demonstrates impressive photo-responsive properties. Photodetector (PD) arrays were designed on free-standing PQD paper and flexible graphitic electrodes, and circuits were fabricated by drawing. The PD arrays can work as optical and electrical dual-mode image sensors with incredible bending robustness, enduring up to 100,000 cycles at 180°.

Biothiols play essential roles in maintaining normal physiological functions, resisting oxidative stress, and protecting cell health. Establishing an effective and reliable sensor array for the accurate quantification and discrimination of diverse biothiols is extremely meaningful. In this work, Ag/Mn 3 O 4 , Ag 3 PO 4 , and Ag 3 Cit with excellent oxidase-mimetic activity and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-enhanced features have been prepared and loaded onto Whatman filter paper (WFP) to build SERS paper chips as three sensing channels, which can induce 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation to SERS-active reporters (TMBox) and concurrently generate prominent SERS signals. Nevertheless, the addition of biothiols can suppress conversion from TMB to TMBox, which can cause the reduction of the SERS signal from TMBox. Interestingly, each SERS sensing channel can generate different TMBox signals' variations due to differences in the oxidative inhibition abilities of diverse biothiols and exclusive properties of each paper chip, which can be plotted as specific fingerprint patterns of each biothiol and further translated into intuitive two-dimensional (2D) clustering profiles through linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) techniques for precise identification of these six biothiols with the minimum concentration of 1 μM. More importantly, this SERS sensor array is exploited for the precise quantification of intracellular glutathione (GSH), and can differentiate between normal and cancer cells based on different intracellular GSH contents and even identify different types of tumor cells, demonstrating its powerful application prospects in disease diagnosis.

An alarming increase in the use of pesticides and organoarsenic compounds and their toxic impacts on the environment have inspired us to develop a selective and highly sensitive sensor for the detection of these pollutants. Herein, a bio-friendly, low-cost Al-based luminescent metal-organic framework ( 1' )-based fluorescent material is demonstrated that helps in sustaining water quality by rapid monitoring and quantification of a long-established pesticide (pendimethalin) and a widely employed organoarsenic feed additive (roxarsone). A pyridine-functionalized porous aluminum-based metal-organic framework (Al-MOF) was solvothermally synthesized. After activation, it was used for fast (<10 s) and selective turn-off detection of roxarsone and pendimethalin over other competitive analytes. This is the first MOF-based recyclable sensor for pendimethalin with a remarkably low limit of detection (LOD, 14.4 nM). Real-time effectiveness in detection of pendimethalin in various vegetable and food extracts was successfully verified. Moreover, the aqueous-phase recyclable detection of roxarsone with an ultralow detection limit (13.1 nM) makes it a potential candidate for real-time application. The detection limits for roxarsone and pendimethalin are lower than the existing luminescent material based sensors. Furthermore, the detection of roxarsone in different environmental water and a wide pH range with a good recovery percentage was demonstrated. In addition, a cheap and bio-friendly 1'@chitosan@paper strip composite was prepared and successfully employed for the hands-on detection of pendimethalin and roxarsone. The turn-off behavior of 1' in the presence of pendimethalin and roxarsone was examined systematically, and plausible mechanistic pathways were proposed with the help of multiple experimental evidences.

The rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 caused the COVID-19 pandemic and accelerated vaccine development to prevent the spread of the virus and control the disease. Given the sustained high infectivity and evolution of SARS-CoV-2, there is an ongoing interest in developing COVID-19 serology tests to monitor population-level immunity. To address this critical need, we designed a paper-based multiplexed vertical flow assay (xVFA) using five structural proteins of SARS-CoV-2, detecting IgG and IgM antibodies to monitor changes in COVID-19 immunity levels. Our platform not only tracked longitudinal immunity levels but also categorized COVID-19 immunity into three groups: protected, unprotected, and infected, based on the levels of IgG and IgM antibodies. We operated two xVFAs in parallel to detect IgG and IgM antibodies using a total of 40 μL of human serum sample in <20 min per test. After the assay, images of the paper-based sensor panel were captured using a mobile phone-based custom-designed optical reader and then processed by a neural network-based serodiagnostic algorithm. The serodiagnostic algorithm was trained with 120 measurements/tests and 30 serum samples from 7 randomly selected individuals and was blindly tested with 31 serum samples from 8 different individuals, collected before vaccination as well as after vaccination or infection, achieving an accuracy of 89.5%. The competitive performance of the xVFA, along with its portability, cost-effectiveness, and rapid operation, makes it a promising computational point-of-care (POC) serology test for monitoring COVID-19 immunity, aiding in timely decisions on the administration of booster vaccines and general public health policies to protect vulnerable populations.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) residues in food pose a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. Herein, we propose a three-dimensional folded paper-based microfluidic analysis device (3D-μPAD) based on multifunctional metal-organic frameworks, which can achieve rapid quantitative detection of CPF by fluorescence-colorimetric dual-mode readout. Upconversion nanomaterials were first coupled with a bimetal organic framework possessing peroxidase activity to create a fluorescence-quenched nanoprobe. After that, the 3D-μPAD was finished by loading the nanoprobe onto the paper-based detection zone and spraying it with a color-developing solution. With CPF present, the fluorescence intensity of the detection zone gradually recovers, the color changes from colorless to blue. This showed a good linear relationship with the concentration of CPF, and the limits of detection were 0.028 (fluorescence) and 0.043 (colorimetric) ng/mL, respectively. Moreover, the 3D-μPAD was well applied in detecting real samples with no significant difference compared with the high-performance liquid chromatography method. We believe it has huge potential for application in the on-site detection of food hazardous substance residues.

Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH)-detecting electrochemical sensors are attractive in monitoring and diagnosing various physiological disorders of NADH abnormalities. The NADH detection methods using conventional electrodes are challenging due to slow electron transfer and fouling effect. Interestingly, paper-based flexible and disposable electrodes (PE) are superior for sensing biomolecules through simple detection procedures with excellent sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, to construct a conducting polypeptide-modified paper electrode, initially, polytyrosine (PTyr) is synthesized from l-tyrosine N-carboxy anhydride through ring-opening polymerization, and PTyr is drop-coated on the PE. The PTyr-modified paper electrode (PMPE) demonstrated excellent electrochemical properties and facilitated the electrooxidation of NADH at a lower potential of 576 mV. The PMPE displayed a linear detection between 25 and 145 μM of NADH concentration, with a lower detection limit of 0.340 μM. Under ideal circumstances, the sensor developed displayed an excellent NADH detection capability without interference with the most common electroactive species, ascorbic acid. The PMPE facilitates good electrocatalytic activity toward NADH, which can also be employed as a substrate material for biofuel cells.

The highly contagious nature and 100% fatality rate contribute to the ongoing and expanding impact of the African swine fever virus (ASFV), causing significant economic losses worldwide. Herein, we developed a cascaded colorimetric detection using the combination of a CRISPR/Cas14a system, G-quadruplex DNAzyme, and microfluidic paper-based analytical device. This CRISPR/Cas14a-G4 biosensor could detect ASFV as low as 5 copies/μL and differentiate the wild-type and mutated ASFV DNA with 2-nt difference. Moreover, this approach was employed to detect ASFV in porcine plasma. A broad linear detection range was observed, and the limit of detection in spiked porcine plasma was calculated to be as low as 42-85 copies/μL. Our results indicate that the developed paper platform exhibits the advantages of high sensitivity, excellent specificity, and low cost, making it promising for clinical applications in the field of DNA disease detection and suitable for popularization in low-resourced areas.

The patterning of hydrophilic paper with hydrophobic materials has emerged as an interesting method for the fabrication of paper-based devices (PADs). Herein, we demonstrate a digitally automated, easy, low-cost, eco-friendly, and readily available method to create highly hydrophobic barriers on paper that can be promptly employed with PADs by simply using a bioink made with rosin, a commercially available natural resin obtained from conifer trees. The bioink can be easily delivered with the use of a ballpoint pen to produce water- and organic solvent-resistant barriers, showing superior properties when compared to other methods such as wax-printing or permanent markers. The approach enables the pen to be attached to a commercially available cutting printer to perform the semiautomated fabrication of hydrophobic barriers for PADs. With the aid of digitally controlled optimization, together with features of machine learning and design of experiments, we show a thorough investigation on the barrier strength that can be further adjusted to the desired application's needs. Then, we explored the barrier sturdiness across various uses, such as wide range aqueous pH sensing and the harsh acidic/organic conditions needed for the colorimetric detection of cholecalciferol.

The occurrence of chlorinated derivatives of bisphenol S (Cl x -BPS) and BPS was investigated in nine types of paper products ( n = 125), including thermal paper, corrugated boxes, mail envelopes, newspapers, flyers, magazines, food contact paper, household paper, and business cards. BPS was found in all paper product samples, while Cl x -BPS were mainly found in thermal paper (from below the limit of detection (-1 ), corrugated box (-1 ), mailing envelope (-1 ), and newspaper (-1 ) samples. All samples with detectable Cl x -BPS concentrations contained a high concentration of BPS. Cl 1 -BPS was the most frequently detected analyte, followed by Cl 2 -BPS-2 (2-chloro-4-(3-chloro-4-hydroxyphenyl)sulfonylphenol), Cl 2 -BPS-1 (2,6-dichloro-4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)sulfonylphenol), Cl 3 -BPS, and Cl 4 -BPS. The estimated daily intake of Cl x -BPS via dermal transfer upon handling of paper products was 0.546 and 16.4 ng per day for generally and occupationally exposed individuals, at the maximum concentration of 3.76 μg g -1 . Additionally, the potential toxicity of Cl x -BPS was predicted using an in silico tool, showing toxicity gradually increased with an increasing degree of chlorination of BPS. Thus, human exposure to Cl x -BPS through paper products should be given due attention as a health risk.

Paper is an ideal candidate for the development of new disposable diagnostic devices because it is a low-cost material, allows transport of the liquid on the device by capillary action, and is environmentally friendly. Today, colorimetric analysis is most often used as a detection method for rapid tests (test strips or lateral flow devices) but usually gives only qualitative results and is limited by a relatively high detection threshold. Here, we describe studies using fluorescence as a readout tool for paper-based diagnostics. We study how the optical readout is affected by light transmission, scattering, and fluorescence as a function of paper characteristics such as thickness (grammage), water content, autofluorescence, and paper type/composition. We show that paper-based fluorescence analysis allows better optical readout compared to that of nitrocellulose, which is currently the material of choice in colorimetric assays. To reduce the loss of analyte molecules (e.g., proteins) due to adsorption to the paper surface, we coat the paper fibers with a protein-repellent hydrogel. For this purpose, we use hydrophilic copolymers consisting of N , N -dimethyl acrylamide and a benzophenone-based cross-linker, which are photochemically transformed into a fiber-attached polymer hydrogel on the paper fiber surfaces in situ. We show that the combination of fluorescence detection and the use of a protein-repellent coating enables sensitive paper-based analysis. Finally, the success of the strategy is demonstrated by using a simple LFD application as an example.

Point-of-care (POC) devices can provide inexpensive, practical, and expedited solutions for applications ranging from biomedicine to environmental monitoring. This work reports on the development of low-cost microfluidic substrates for POC systems suitable for analytical assays, while also satisfying the need for social and environmentally conscious practices regarding circular economy, waste reduction, and the use of local resources. Thus, an innovative greener process to extract cellulose from plants including abaca, cotton, kozo, linen, and sisal, originating from different places around the world, is developed, and then the corresponding paper substrates are obtained to serve as platforms for POC assays. Hydrophobic wax is used to delineate channels that are able to guide solutions into chambers where the colorimetric assay for total cholesterol quantification is carried out as a proof of concept. Morphological and physicochemical analyses are performed, including the evaluation of fiber diameter, shape and density, and mechanical and thermal properties, together with peel adhesion of the printed wax channels. Contact angle and capillary flow tests ascertain the suitability of the substrates for liquid assays and overall viability as low-cost, sustainable microfluidic substrates for POC applications.

With the continuous improvement of living standards and advancements in science and technology, composite materials with multiple functionalities are gaining high practical value in modern society. In this paper, we present a multifunctional conductive paper-based composite with electromagnetic (EMI) shielding, sensing, Joule heating, and antimicrobial properties. The composite is prepared by growing metallic silver nanoparticles inside the cellulose paper (CP) modified with polydopamine (PDA). The resulting CP@PDA@Ag (CPPA) composite has high conductivity and EMI shielding properties. Furthermore, CPPA composites demonstrate exceptional sensing, Joule heating, and antimicrobial properties. In addition, Vitrimer, a polymer with excellent cross-linked network structure, is introduced into CPPA composites to obtain CPPA-V intelligent electromagnetic shielding materials with shape memory function. These excellent properties show that the prepared multifunctional intelligent composite has exceptional EMI shielding, sensing, Joule heating, and antibacterial and shape memory properties. In short, this multifunctional intelligent composite material has great application prospects in flexible wearable electronics.

This work describes a novel rapid method to fabricate high-resolution paper-based microfluidic devices using wax-ink-based printing. This study demonstrates that both temperature and pressure are important knobs in controlling the device resolution. High-resolution lines and patterns were obtained by heating the paper asymmetrically from one side up to 110 °C while applying pressure up to 49 kPa. Starting with wax lines with an initial width of 130 μm, we achieve a thorough penetration through a 190 μm-thick paper with lateral spreading on the front as narrow as 90 μm. The role of temperature and pressure are systematically studied and compared with the prediction of the Lucas-Washburn equation. We found that the temperature dependence of spreading can be explained by the viscosity change of the wax, according to the Lucas-Washburn equation. The pressure dependence deviates from Lucas-Washburn behavior because of compression of the paper. An optimal condition for achieving full depth penetration of the wax yet minimizing lateral spreading is suggested after exploring various parameters including temperature, pressure, and paper type. A simple, reliable, and low-cost fabrication method is proposed here for assembling paper-based electrochemical devices (PEDs) using a commercial desktop digitally controlled plotter/cutter, together with ordinary writing tools. Permanent markers (tips of 1 mm) were used to create effective hydrophobic barriers on paper, while micromechanical pencils (mounting 4B graphite leads, 0.5 mm in diameter) were adopted for automatically drawn precise reference, counter, and working carbon electrodes. Fabrication parameters, such as writing pressure and speed, were first optimized, and the electrochemical performance of these devices was then evaluated by using potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) as redox probe. The good interdevice reproducibility (4.8%) displayed by the relevant voltammetric responses confirmed that this strategy can be profitably adopted to easily assemble paper-based electrochemical devices in a highly flexible manner. The simplicity of the instrumentation used and the low cost of each single device (about $0.04), together with the speed of fabrication (about 2 min), are other important features of the proposed strategy. Finally, to confirm the effectiveness of this prototyping method for the analysis of real samples and rapid controls, PEDs assembled by this simple approach were successfully exploited for the analysis of vitamin B6 in food supplements. Infectious diseases are a major global health issue. Diagnosis is a critical first step in effectively managing their spread. Paper-based microfluidic diagnostics first emerged in 2007 as a low-cost alternative to conventional laboratory testing, with the goal of improving accessibility to medical diagnostics in developing countries. In this review, we examine the advances in paper-based microfluidic diagnostics for medical diagnosis in the context of global health from 2007 to 2016. The theory of fluid transport in paper is first presented. The next section examines the strategies that have been employed to control fluid and analyte transport in paper-based assays. Tasks such as mixing, timing, and sequential fluid delivery have been achieved in paper and have enabled analytical capabilities comparable to those of conventional laboratory methods. The following section examines paper-based sample processing and analysis. The most impactful advancement here has been the translation of nucleic acid analysis to a paper-based format. Smartphone-based analysis is another exciting development with potential for wide dissemination. The last core section of the review highlights emerging health applications, such as male fertility testing and wearable diagnostics. Human exposure to heavy metals is a concerning global problem because of its detrimental effect on our health and ecosystem. Assessing the levels of these metals is cost- and labor-intensive and nonuser friendly because current analysis approaches typically rely on heavy instrumentations like inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, which is only possible in centralized labs. Hence, simple economical detection methods are in high demand in developing countries and areas with insufficient infrastructure, professional experts, and appropriate environmental treatment. Several microfluidic paper-based analytical devices have been reported as promising alternatives to conventional testing methods for on-site heavy metal detection. Paper-based microfluidics are advantageous because of their simple fabrication, biodegradability, low cost, and ability to operate without pumps. However, typical assay times for current platforms are slow, and they typically rely on pipetting a fixed volume into the assay cards. This adds complexity in actual field scenarios. Here, we report a novel, inexpensive, and straightforward capillary-driven microfluidic device combined with paper for rapid and user-friendly detection of Ni(II), Cu(II), and Fe(III) in water. A colorimetric approach was adopted to quantify these metals. The device was able to produce a homogeneous color signal within 8 s of sample insertion. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were calculated to be 2 and 6.67 ppm for nickel, 0.3 and 1 ppm for Cu, and 1.1 and 3.67 ppm for Fe, respectively. The majority (>90%) of the collected samples showed recovery in the 80-110% range with acceptable accuracy and precision (<15% RSD) for a colorimetric device. This technique can be beneficial for rapidly assessing heavy metal exposure in drinking and surface water at drastically reduced assay time and is the first example of capillary flow-driven microfluidic devices as a transport medium for heavy metal detection.

The hybrid films of reinforcing the aged papers have been employed via layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly deposition of the chitosan lactate/carboxymethyl cellulose complex previously modified with metal oxide. In order to reinforce the films, a vacuum infiltration was adopted in the LBL process. The mechanical properties and structure of the aged papers in relation to fiber morphology were investigated using SEM, FTIR, XPS, and tensile test. The well-dispersed coatings resulted in an excellent improvement in mechanical properties of the modified paper. After only three bilayers deposited, the measured tensile strength and folding endurance for modified aged newspaper samples increased up to 100% and 450%, respectively, as compared to the control sample. This high efficiency was kept even when the modified paper samples exposed to the moist-heat accelerated aging and UV irradiation. The pH of the paper rose to alkalescence rapidly, and the paper samples maintained their coloration close to the original after treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The penciling part on a paper is colored by the formation of structural color, and the coloring of a paper without ink has been achieved. In a previous study, our group reported that structural color is formed by plasma irradiation (40-120 s) of the surface of a pencil lead or paper painted with a pencil. The formation of structural color due to the thin-layer interference of components of the pencil lead was observed. The clay exposed by removal of the surface graphite through plasma etching plays the role of a "thin layer". The pencil lead can be colored blue, red, and green by the method. In the case of the paper painted with a pencil (6B), the paper turned blue but could not form the other colors by the method. The reason is that the graphite layer on the paper is not thick enough to form thin-layer interference to show colors other than blue. We now present the method that forms structural colors by plasma irradiation of the paper painted by a graphite-rich pencil lead (9B and 12B). The formation of various structural colors, such as blue, yellow, red-purple, and green, on the paper was achieved. The colored site can be effaced by an eraser. This method is a novel coloring method without using colored inks. This environmentallly friendly coloring method can be applied to various activities, such as studies and art, and can contribute to the achievement of a sustainable society.

The occurrence of fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) was investigated in 94 food-contact materials (FCMs). We detected 6:2 FTOH (<0.60--1110 ng/g), 8:2 FTOH (<0.40--8490 ng/g), and 10:2 FTOH (<0.02--9350 ng/g) in most FCM samples, and four longer-chain C14-20 FTOHs were, for the first time, identified in FCMs with relatively high concentrations (<0.02--8450 ng/g for 12:2 FTOH, <0.02--1640 ng/g for 14:2 FTOH, <0.02--372 ng/g for 16:2 FTOH, and <0.02--130 ng/g for 18:2 FTOH). There were three typical profiles of FTOHs that were dominated by 6:2 FTOH (95.6 ± 8.1% in 9 FCMs), 8:2 FTOH (50.9 ± 20.8% in 22 FCMs), and 10:2 FTOH (44.5 ± 20.9% in 30 FCMs), indicating the congener-specific usage of FTOHs for different commercial purposes. All nine detectable FCMs produced in the United States were dominated by 6:2 FTOH, which was significantly different from those produced in China. The median concentration of total FTOHs in eco-friendly paper tableware was 2990 ng/g, which was lower than in popcorn bags (18 200 ng/g) but much higher than other FCMs (<0.55--38.7 ng/g). FTOHs could migrate from paper bowls, with migration efficiencies of 0.004--0.24% into water, 0.004--0.24% into 10% ethanol, 0.009--2.79% into 30% ethanol, 0.06--13.0% into 50% ethanol (v/v) simulants, and 0.04--2.28% into oil. Paper is an extraordinary example of a composite engineering material with practical use in a huge variety of applications. Since its invention in China, there have been many alterations to manufacturing techniques, component formulation, and surface finishing, yet the essential characteristics of paper have not changed greatly. The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate that the chromatographic performance of paper as a stationary phase may be used to distinguish between externally similar materials. The procedure developed is so simple that even students with little exposure to practical chemistry and limited chemical knowledge can understand the essential content. Because of the ubiquitous nature of paper, it is often recovered from crime scenes as evidence for analysis. However, the variety of sources and the mechanical or chemical properties often make demonstration of unequivocal correlation between "questioned" and "known" or "reference" samples a complex task. Introducing the practical session as a crime scene investigation, and presenting the laboratory exercise as an accessible forensic technique for paper identification, adds an exciting dimension to the practical experience for young people. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has gained preponderance in recent years, as a very attractive material for the fabrication and patterning of graphitic structures and electrodes, for multiple applications in electronics. Typically, polymeric substrates, such as polyimide, have been used as precursor materials, but other organic, more sustainable, and accessible precursor materials have emerged as viable alternatives, including cellulose substrates. However, these substrates have lacked the conductive and chemical properties achieved by conventional LIG precursor substrates and have not been translated into fully flexible, wearable scenarios. In this work, we expand the conductive properties of paper-based LIG, by boosting the graphitization potential of paper, through the introduction of external aromatic moieties and meticulous control of laser fluence. Colored wax printing over the paper substrates introduces aromatic chemical structures, allowing for the synthesis of LIG chemical structures with sheet resistances as low as 5 Ω·sq -1 , translating to an apparent conductivity as high as 28.2 S·cm -1 . Regarding chemical properties, I D ratios of 0.28 showcase low defect densities of LIG chemical structures and improve on previous reports on paper-based LIG, where sheet resistance has been limited to values around 30 Ω·sq I , with more defect dense and less crystalline chemical structures. With these improved properties, a simple transfer methodology was developed, based on a water-induced peel-off process that efficiently separates patterned LIG structures from the native paper substrates to conformable, flexible substrates, harnessing the multifunctional capabilities of LIG toward multiple applications in wearable electronics. Moisture-activated electric generators (MEGs) that harvest clean energy from atmospheric humidity offer exciting opportunities for upgraded energy conversions. However, it is challenging to obtain MEGs that are both easy to fabricate and of high output power, due to the requirement for particular functional materials and the cumbersome manufacturing process. Herein, a simple and general method is adopted to prepare MEGs with chemically gradient structures. As a specific example, a gradient distribution of citric acid was successfully constructed inside an A4 printer paper by asymmetric drying, which can generate a continuous voltage of tens of millivolts by ambient humidity, and even to volts (275 mV and 7.6 μA cm -2 ) under asymmetric humidity stimulation, and the maximum power density output was 2.1 μW cm -2 . The driving force behind this energy conversion is a self-maintained ionic gradient created within the paper by the asymmetric ionization of gradient organic acids when exposed to gradient or nongradient humid air. This work broadens the class of materials and possibilities for the rapid development of MEGs, shedding new light on the revolution of generators that harvest green and sustainable energy for power generation.

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) are emerging as powerful analytical platforms in clinical diagnostics, food safety, and environmental protection because of their low cost and favorable substrate properties for biosensing. However, the existing top-down fabrication methods of paper-based chips suffer from low resolution (>200 μm). Additionally, papers have limitations in their physical properties (e.g., thickness, transmittance, and mechanical flexibility). Here, we demonstrate a bottom-up approach for the rapid fabrication of heterogeneously controlled paper-based chip arrays. We simply print a wax-patterned microchip with wettability contrasts, enabling automatic and selective assembly of cellulose microfibers to construct predefined paper-based microchip arrays with controllable thickness. This paper-based microchip printing technology is feasible for various substrate materials ranging from inorganic glass to organic polymers, providing a versatile platform for the full range of applications including transparent devices and flexible health monitoring. Our bottom-up printing technology using cellulose microfibers as the starting material provides a lateral resolution down to 42 ± 3 μm and achieves the narrowest channel barrier down to 33 ± 2 μm. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, a flexible paper-based glucose monitor is built for human health care, requiring only 0.3 μL of sample for testing.

Inorganicfillers, the second largest component of the papermakingprocess, have poor bondability with cellulosic fibers, interfere ininterfiber bonding, and reduce paper strength. Filler preflocculation/modificationis a practical method for enhancing interactions between the fillerparticles and fibers. This article reports on the effects of fillercontent and preflocculation on the filler bondability factor calculatedbased on first-pass ash retention and paper strength properties suchas the tensile, Z-direction tensile, and compositetensile indexes. Talc filler preflocculated using 0.1–0.8%dosages of cooked cationic starch based on the dry weight of fillerwas loaded in paper to obtain varying filler contents of 15–24%.The filler bondability factor (FBF) and various tensile propertiesof paper were calculated and analyzed for all experiments. FBF andpaper strength were reduced with increasing filler content in paper,whereas they were improved upon addition of preflocculated fillerin paper. Noticeably, preflocculated filler resulted in increasesin FBF and composite tensile index of 13–24% and 7–15%,respectively, at a 24% filler content in paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrate the hybridization-induced fluorescence detection of DNA on an origami-based paper analytical device (oPAD). The paper substrate was patterned by wax printing and controlled heating to construct hydrophilic channels and hydrophobic barriers in a three-dimensional fashion. A competitive assay was developed where the analyte, a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), and a quencherlabeled ssDNA competed for hybridization with a fluorophorelabeled ssDNA probe. Upon hybridization of the analyte with the fluorophore-labeled ssDNA, a linear response of fluorescence vs analyte concentration was observed with an extrapolated limit of detection <5 nM and a sensitivity relative standard deviation as low as 3%. We report the development of a distance-based paper analytical device combined with a hydrophilic bridge valve (B-dPAD) as a quantitative immunoassay method to monitor human interleukin-6 (IL-6) in human samples. Our device design features (i) a circular sample inlet zone, (ii) a circular capture zone with immobilized anti-IL-6 (anti-Ab 1 ), and (iii) a detection zone channel coated with methylene blue (MB). Two hydrophilic valves are positioned between these three zones. IL-6 levels were determined quantitatively by measuring the extent of degradation of MB to a colorless product along the length of the detection zone channel. Following method optimization, we obtained a linear range from 0.05 to 25.0 pg/mL ( R 2 = 0.9995) and a detection limit (LOD) of 0.05 pg/mL by the naked-eye readout. This is directly within the clinically relevant range. The system does not require any external instrumentation, and the bridge valves can be easily connected and disconnected by a minimally trained operator. The total analysis time is 35 min, significantly reduced from a typical ELISA assay, which takes around 1 h since the B-dPAD workflow circumvents washing steps. The device was tested for IL-6 quantification in human saliva and urine samples of volunteers, with no significant difference found between our method and the standard clinical laboratory method at 95% confidence levels. Recoveries ranged from 98 to 105% with the highest standard deviation at 3.9%. Our B-dPAD immunodevice is therefore a promising approach for rapid IL-6 monitoring in the context of point-of-care diagnostics and analysis in resource-limited settings.

Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have attracted significant attention in the field of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. However, the heterogeneous structure of the paper often impairs the limit of detection (LOD) for low-abundance targets when those targets are directly analyzed. One viable solution to bypass this limitation is to elevate the target concentration above the LOD on-site to reach a valid readout. Here, we developed a 3D μPADs preconcentrator (3D-μP 2 ) to increase sample concentration by electrokinetic trapping and demonstrated its application in increasing the LOD of a downstream colorimetric assay. The three-dimensional (3D) structure of this device was composed of a loading pad, a vertical fluid path formed by stacked absorbent pads, and an ion-selective membrane of PEDOT:PSS. This novel design facilitates fast preconcentration, high capacity in sample processing, and easy target retrieval. The concentration of an exemplary target, a single-stranded DNA sequence, was increased up to 170-fold within 80 s. The LOD of the colorimetric assay to verify the DNA target was increased 3 orders of magnitude with a preconcentrated sample compared to the control. The device and its analysis equipment used in this study were all cheap and portable. Thus, the 3D-μP 2 can be a powerful POC tool for sample pretreatment in resource-limited areas.

Uric acid (UA) is an important biomarker for many diseases. A sensitive point-of-care (POC) testing platform is designed for the digital quantification of salivary UA based on a colorimetric reaction on an easy-to-build smartphone-assisted microfluidic paper-based analytical device (SμPAD). UA levels are quantified according to the color intensity of Prussian blue on the SμPAD with the aid of a MATLAB code or a smartphone APP. A color correction method is specifically applied to exclude the light effect. Together with the engineering design of SμPADs, the background calibration function with the APP increases the UA sensitivity by 100-fold to reach 0.1 ppm with a linear range of 0.1-200 ppm. The assay time is less than 10 min. SμPADs demonstrate a correlation of 0.97 with a commercial UA kit for the detection of salivary UA in clinical samples. SμPADs provide a sensitive, fast, affordable, and reliable tool for the noninvasive POC quantification of salivary UA for early diagnosis of abnormal UA level-associated health conditions.
