The article describes research by a group of primary and secondary education teachers that explored how students can develop more efficient calculation methods in division. Details are provided on the study how students in Year 4 through Year 7 classrooms made strategy decisions in performing division calculations, such as using mental calculations, writing the problem on paper, or using a calculator. Particular attention is given to drawing making connections to multiplication in promoting efficiency.
