Teachers' questioning plays an essential role in shaping collective argumentative discourse. This paper demonstrated that rationality dimensions in teacher questions can be assessed by adapting Habermas' three components of rationality. By coordinating Habermas' construct with Toulmin's model for argumentation, this paper investigated how two secondary mathematics teachers used rational questioning to support student participation in collective argumentation. This paper identified various ways in which two participating teachers used rational questioning to support student participation in argumentation via contributions of argument components. The results establish a theoretical connection between the use of rational questions and students' contributions of components of arguments. The results indicated that not all rational questions were associated with a component of argument, and rational questions may additionally support argumentation in general for the development of a culture of rationality. This paper explores how different schools of thought in mathematics education think and speak about preparing mathematics for teaching by introducing and proposing certain metaphors. Among the metaphors under consideration here are the unpacking metaphor, which finds its origin in the Anglo-American school of thought of pedagogical reduction of mathematics; the elementarization metaphor, which has its origin in the German school of thought of didactic reconstruction of mathematics; and the recontextualization metaphor, which originates in the French school of thought of didactic transposition. The metaphorical language used in these schools of thought is based on different theoretical positions, orientations, and images of preparing mathematics for teaching. Although these metaphors are powerful and allow for different ways of thinking and speaking about preparing mathematics for teaching, they suggest that preparing mathematics for teaching is largely a one-sided process in the sense of an adaptation of the knowledge in question. To promote a more holistic understanding, an alternative metaphor is offered: preparing mathematics for teaching as ecological engineering. By using the ecological engineering metaphor, the preparation of mathematics for teaching is presented as a two-sided process that involves both the adaptation of knowledge and the modification of its environment. Challenges to the quality of basic mathematics education, especially in under-resourced countries, are well documented. It is in response to these challenges that the International Commission of Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) launched its programme of Capacity and Networking Project (CANP). This programme aims to create and sustain effective regional networks in low-income and lower-middle-income countries and develop the educational capacity of those responsible for mathematics teachers. This paper reports on the deliberations among the representatives of CANP, ICMI and the International Mathematical Union in working towards the common goal of making high quality mathematics education available to all. Pre-service secondary mathematics teachers have a poor command of the exact language of mathematics as evidenced in assignments, micro-lessons and practicums. The unrelenting notorious annual South African National Senior Certificate outcomes in mathematics and the recognition by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) that the correct use of mathematical language in classrooms is problematic is reported in the National Senior Certificate Diagnostic Reports on learner performance (DBE, 2008-2013). The reports further recognise that learners do not engage successfully with mathematical problems that require conceptual understanding. This paper therefore highlights a need for teachers to be taught and master an exact mathematical language that for example, calls an 'expression' an 'expression' and not an 'equation'. It must support the call of the DBE to use correct mathematical language that will support and improve conceptual understanding rather than perpetuate rote procedural skills, which are often devoid of thought and reason. The authentic language of mathematics can initiate and promote meaningful mathematical dialogue. Initial teacher education programmes, as in the subject methodologies, affords lecturers this opportunity. The language notions of Vygotskian thought and language, Freirian emancipatory critical consciousness and Habermasian ethical and moral communicative action frame the paper theoretically. Using a grounded approach, after examining examples of student language in a practice based research intervention, the design and development of a repertoire of language categories, literal, algebraic, graphical (Cartesian) and procedural (algorithmic) emerged from three one-year cycles of an action research methodology. The development of these repertoires of language was to assist teachers in communicating about mathematical objects through providing a structured framework within which to think and teach. A course model encompassing small group discussions, an oral examination and a self-study action research project, that helped sustain the teaching of an exact mathematical language, is presented. Learners in general struggle when working with word problems. South African learners in particular have an added barrier owing to the many official languages that have been legislated. The South African Department of Basic Education, through its curriculum statements, envisages that problem solving will play a fundamental part in mathematics teaching and learning. Whilst this has been embraced by teachers of mathematics, learners still experience difficulties when solving chosen word problems. This empirical, qualitative study explored 28 Grade 9 learners' use of visualisation when solving word problems. After all the due ethical clearance protocols were observed, one class of learners completed a task-based exercise and five learners were interviewed. The results showed that when learners drew a diagram that represented the problem, they were more likely to solve it. Those learners who drew no diagram, or drew an incorrect one, failed to arrive at a suitable solution. An important finding is that the visualisation technique is a powerful tool when working with the solving of problems in mathematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mathematics educators have long emphasised the importance of attitudes, beliefs, and feelings towards mathematics, as crucial in motivating (or not) its learning and use, and as influenced in turn by its social images. This paper is about images of mathematics. Our search for advertisements containing such images in UK daily newspapers, during 2006-2008, found that 4.7 % of editions included a 'mathematical' advert, compared with 1.7 % in pilot work for 1994-2003. The incidence varied across type of newspaper, being correlated with class and gender profiles of the readership. Three quarters of advertisements were classified as containing only very simple mathematics. 'Semiotic discursive' analysis of selected advertisements suggests that they draw on mathematics not to inform, but to connote qualities like precision, certainty, and authority. We discuss the discourse on mathematics in advertising as 'quasi-pedagogic' discourse, and argue that its oversimplified forms, being empty of mathematical content, become powerful means for regulating and 'pedagogising' today's global consumers. This study evaluated the impact of the in-service training program offered by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in Nigeria on the testing skill of Mathematics teachers in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The study adopted the expo facto research design research. A two-stage sampling involving simple random and stratified techniques were employed to select 134 from the 530 Mathematics teachers in the public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The instrument used for the data collection was, Teacher Testing Skills Assessment Scale (TTSAS) developed by the researchers based on the objective of the study. The instrument was validated by three measurement experts and trial tested. The reliability coefficient of .77 was obtained from the inter-rater method of reliability estimate. The data collected was analyzed using mean, standard deviation and independent sample t-test. The results of the analysis revealed that the UBEC in-service training program has significant positive impact on Mathematics teachers' testing skills. It was concluded that the UBEC teachers' capacity development program is a profitable venture with promising national gains. It was recommended that government should continue with her support for the UBEC in sustaining regular in-service training program for teachers in secondary schools across the nation. The main goal of this paper is to discuss the production of meaning of the Modern Math Movement. The main sources were data available in school archives and interviews with former teachers that we use in order to focus on the diversity of perspectives -that complement it or oppose it-, which comes up when teachers refer to the Movement. Using this process of signification, teachers whether accept it, invalidate it or adapt it to guidelines imposed to them in their teaching activities. We establish a methodology by following the premises of Oral History to gather oral testimonies. The theoretical foundations in which this article is written are the guidelines of Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics, John Thompson's Depth Hermeneutics and Bolívar's narrative analysis. Mathematics programmes in basic education are currently undergoing reform in Portugal. This paper sets out to see how teachers are putting the new guidelines for the teaching of mathematics into practice, with particular emphasis on maths communication in the classroom. To achieve this, an experiment in teaching the topic 'Sequences and Regularities' with open-ended tasks, using a qualitative and interpretative approach, is reported. Data were collected during two class observations, from two interviews and by analysing the activities of the students. An exploratory task was chosen in the first lesson and a investigative one in the second. One month separated the two lessons, and during this time the teacher read and discussed texts on mathematics communication. Observation of the first lesson showed that the communication in the classroom was mostly focused on the teacher, which provided little student-student and student-class interaction. In the second observed lesson, the teacher changed the attention she paid to what each student said and did, encouraging the students to ask each other and encouraged student-class and the student-student communication. Although the basic knowledge and skills that each generation must acquire vary by country, such knowledge and skills are somewhat standardized depending on the requirements of the modern era. As one of the basic parts of education, curricula are essential in that they include the knowledge, communication and technological developments required by the age. The objective of this study is to analyze the primary school 3rd grade mathematics education curricula in Northern and Southern Cyprus in line with NCTM (National Council of Teacher of Mathematics) principles and standards and to evaluate them according to teachers' opinions. In the research, document analysis and the interview technique, which are both qualitative analysis methods, were used. As a result of the study, it has been observed that the 3rd grade mathematics curricula in Northern and Southern Cyprus have similarities and differences in line with NCTM principles and standards. As a result of this comparison, it has been found that there are differences in NCTM principles in terms of equity, learning and assessment evaluation. It has also been determined that in terms of standards, there are differences in geometry, measuring and data analysis probability of the ‘content’ element, as well as in the notation and expression of the ‘process’ element. In addition, although the opinions of the teachers were analyzed and a common view was put forward with regard to several topics, it was concluded that there were differences of opinion regarding 'which course content should be used in mathematics lessons' and 'whether the mathematics curriculum should be changed or whether it is satisfactory’. This study is a correlational survey of the impact of home involvement on the mathematics achievement of Basic 5 pupils in North Bank suburb of Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. The study is the outcome of the first phase of a local intervention programme targeted at encouraging homes in the suburb to actively support the mathematics education of children at the Basic Education level. The participants of the study comprise 73 Basic 5 pupils along with their parents across three basic schools in the suburb. The mathematics achievement scores of the pupils for the First Term of the 2016/2017 Academic Session were correlated with home involvement scores generated from the adopted Parental Involvement Questionnaire. The correlational analysis established a weak positive relationship (r = 0.0177, p = 0.9241; and r = 0.174, p = 0.2884) between home involvement and mathematics achievement. Further interaction with pupils revealed that outside pupils' parents, certain friends, members of extended family and neighbours play vital roles, ranging from re-teaching class work at home to providing guidance for mathematics homework. The purpose of this cross-national study is to understand teachers' views about the meaning of instructional coherence and the ways to achieve instructional coherence. With respect to the meaning of instructional coherence, whereas the majority of U.S. teachers paid attention to connections between teaching activities, lessons, or topics, the majority of Chinese teachers emphasized the interconnected nature of mathematical knowledge beyond the teaching flow. U.S. teachers expressed their views about ways to achieve instructional coherence through managing a complete lesson structure. In contrast, Chinese teachers emphasized pre-design of teaching sequences, transitional language and questioning based on the study of textbooks and students beforehand. Moreover, they emphasized addressing student thinking and dealing with emerging events in order to achieve 'real' coherence. The findings of the study contribute to our understanding about the meaning of instructional coherence and ways to achieve instructional coherence in different cultural contexts.
