The article focuses on Shuji Nakamura, researcher who helped develop the LEDs, which power high-definition DVD. Nakamura came from Japanese industry's equivalent of left field. He delivered a technology that had stumped researchers in some of its best electronics labs. Gallium nitride is the material upon which Nakamura's technology was based. This is a material which is rarely used by researchers at that time. A shift was started by his success to the material from the traditional selenide. Nakamura continues to study gallium nitride crystal structures as a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
