Industry 4.0 proposes the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into manufacturing and other industries to create smart collaborative systems which enhance efficiency. The aim of this paper is to develop a flexible and adaptive framework to generate optimal plans for collaborative robots and human workers to replace rigid, hard-coded production line plans in industrial scenarios. This will be achieved by integrating the Planning Domain Definition Language (PDDL), Partial Order Planning Forwards (POPF) task planner, and a task allocation algorithm. The task allocation algorithm proposed in this paper generates a cost function for general actions in the industrial scenario, such as PICK, PLACE, and MOVE, by considering practical factors such as feasibility, reachability, safety, and cooperation level for both robots and human agents. The actions and costs will then be translated into a language understandable by the planning system using PDDL and fed into POPF solver to generate an optimal action plan. In the end, experiments are conducted where assembly tasks are executed by a collaborative system with two manipulators and a human worker to test the feasibility of the theory proposed in this paper.

Cross-lingual chain-of-thought can effectively complete reasoning tasks across languages, which gains increasing attention. Recently, dominant approaches in the literature improve cross-lingual alignment capabilities by integrating reasoning knowledge from different languages. Despite achieving excellent performance, current methods still have two main challenges: (1) Manual language specification: They still highly rely on manually selecting the languages to integrate, severely affecting their generalizability; (2) Static weight allocation: Current methods simply integrate all languages equally. In fact, different language reasoning paths should have different weights to achieve better complementation and integration. Motivated by this, we introduce an Automatic Cross-lingual Alignment Planning (AutoCAP) for zero-shot chain-of-thought to address the above challenges. The core of AutoCAP consists of two components: (1) Automatic Language Selection Prompting to guide LLMs to select appropriate languages and (2) Automatic Weight Allocation Prompting to automatically allocate alignment weight scores to each reasoning path. Slot filling and intent detection are two highly correlated tasks in spoken language understanding (SLU). Recent SLU research attempts to explore zero-shot prompting techniques in large language models to alleviate the data scarcity problem. Nevertheless, the existing prompting work ignores the cross-task interaction information for SLU, which leads to sub-optimal performance. To solve this problem, we present the pioneering work of Cross-task Interactive Prompting (CroPrompt) for SLU, which enables the model to interactively leverage the information exchange across the correlated tasks in SLU. Additionally, we further introduce a multi-task self-consistency mechanism to mitigate the error propagation caused by the intent information injection. We conduct extensive experiments on the standard SLU benchmark and the results reveal that CroPrompt consistently outperforms the existing prompting approaches. In addition, the multi-task self-consistency mechanism can effectively ease the error propagation issue, thereby enhancing the performance. We hope this work can inspire more research on cross-task prompting for SLU.

Multi-modal Chain-of-Thought (MCoT) requires models to leverage knowledge from both textual and visual modalities for step-by-step reasoning, which gains increasing attention. Nevertheless, the current MCoT benchmark still faces some challenges: (1) absence of visual modal reasoning, (2) single-step visual modal reasoning, and (3) Domain missing, thereby hindering the development of MCoT. Motivated by this, we introduce a novel benchmark (M$^3$CoT) to address the above challenges, advancing the multi-domain, multi-step, and multi-modal CoT. Additionally, we conduct a thorough evaluation involving abundant MCoT approaches on Vision Large Language Models (VLLMs). In addition, we highlight that the current VLLMs still struggle to correctly reason in M$^3$CoT and there remains a large gap between existing VLLMs and human performance in M$^3$CoT, despite their superior results on previous MCoT benchmarks. To our knowledge, we take the first meaningful step toward the multi-domain, multi-step, and multi-modal scenario in MCoT. While large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT have shown impressive capabilities in Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, a systematic investigation of their potential in this field remains largely unexplored. This study aims to address this gap by exploring the following questions: (1) How are LLMs currently applied to NLP tasks in the literature? (2) Have traditional NLP tasks already been solved with LLMs? (3) What is the future of the LLMs for NLP? To answer these questions, we take the first step to provide a comprehensive overview of LLMs in NLP. Specifically, we first introduce a unified taxonomy including (1) parameter-frozen application and (2) parameter-tuning application to offer a unified perspective for understanding the current progress of LLMs in NLP. Furthermore, we summarize the new frontiers and the associated challenges, aiming to inspire further groundbreaking advancements. We hope this work offers valuable insights into the {potential and limitations} of LLMs in NLP, while also serving as a practical guide for building effective LLMs in NLP.

Multilingual Large Language Models are capable of using powerful Large Language Models to handle and respond to queries in multiple languages, which achieves remarkable success in multilingual natural language processing tasks. Despite these breakthroughs, there still remains a lack of a comprehensive survey to summarize existing approaches and recent developments in this field. To this end, in this paper, we present a thorough review and provide a unified perspective to summarize the recent progress as well as emerging trends in multilingual large language models (MLLMs) literature. The contributions of this paper can be summarized: (1) First survey: to our knowledge, we take the first step and present a thorough review in MLLMs research field according to multi-lingual alignment; (2) New taxonomy: we offer a new and unified perspective to summarize the current progress of MLLMs; (3) New frontiers: we highlight several emerging frontiers and discuss the corresponding challenges; (4) Abundant resources: we collect abundant open-source resources, including relevant papers, data corpora, and leaderboards. We hope our work can provide the community with quick access and spur breakthrough research in MLLMs.

End-to-end task-oriented dialogue (EToD) can directly generate responses in an end-to-end fashion without modular training, which attracts escalating popularity. The advancement of deep neural networks, especially the successful use of large pre-trained models, has further led to significant progress in EToD research in recent years. In this paper, we present a thorough review and provide a unified perspective to summarize existing approaches as well as recent trends to advance the development of EToD research. The contributions of this paper can be summarized: (1) \textbf{\textit{First survey}}: to our knowledge, we take the first step to present a thorough survey of this research field; (2) \textbf{\textit{New taxonomy}}: we first introduce a unified perspective for EToD, including (i) \textit{Modularly EToD} and (ii) \textit{Fully EToD}; (3) \textbf{\textit{New Frontiers}}: we discuss some potential frontier areas as well as the corresponding challenges, hoping to spur breakthrough research in EToD field; (4) \textbf{\textit{Abundant resources}}: we build a public website\footnote{We collect the related papers, baseline projects, and leaderboards for the community at \url{https://etods.net/}.}, where EToD researchers could directly access the recent progress. Chain-of-thought (CoT) is capable of eliciting models to explicitly generate reasoning paths, thus promoting reasoning accuracy and attracting increasing attention. Specifically, zero-shot CoT achieves remarkable improvements in a wide range of reasoning tasks by simply instructing the LLM with the prompt "Let's think step by step!". Despite the success of zero-shot CoT, the existing zero-shot prompting techniques remain limited to a single language, making it challenging to generalize to other languages and hindering global development. In this work, we introduce cross-lingual prompting (CLP), aiming to improve zero-shot CoT reasoning across languages. Specifically, CLP consists of two main components: (1) cross-lingual alignment prompting and (2) task-specific solver prompting. The cross-lingual alignment prompting is responsible for aligning representations across different languages, whereas the task-specific solver prompting is used to generate the final chain of thoughts and results for the reasoning task. In addition, we further introduce cross-lingual self-consistent prompting (CLSP) to ensemble different reasoning paths across languages. Our experimental evaluations on several benchmarks demonstrate that CLP and CLSP significantly outperform the existing prompting methods and achieve state-of-the-art performance. This paper studies close-loop task planning, which refers to the process of generating a sequence of skills (a plan) to accomplish a specific goal while adapting the plan based on real-time observations. Recently, prompting Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate actions iteratively has become a prevalent paradigm due to its superior performance and user-friendliness. However, this paradigm is plagued by two inefficiencies: high token consumption and redundant error correction, both of which hinder its scalability for large-scale testing and applications. To address these issues, we propose Tree-Planner, which reframes task planning with LLMs into three distinct phases: plan sampling, action tree construction, and grounded deciding. Tree-Planner starts by using an LLM to sample a set of potential plans before execution, followed by the aggregation of them to form an action tree. Finally, the LLM performs a top-down decision-making process on the tree, taking into account real-time environmental information. Experiments show that Tree-Planner achieves state-of-the-art performance while maintaining high efficiency. By decomposing LLM queries into a single plan-sampling call and multiple grounded-deciding calls, a considerable part of the prompt are less likely to be repeatedly consumed. As a result, token consumption is reduced by 92.2% compared to the previously best-performing model. Additionally, by enabling backtracking on the action tree as needed, the correction process becomes more flexible, leading to a 40.5% decrease in error corrections. Images degraded by geometric distortions pose a significant challenge to imaging and computer vision tasks such as object recognition. Deep learning-based imaging models usually fail to give accurate performance for geometrically distorted images. In this paper, we propose the deformation-invariant neural network (DINN), a framework to address the problem of imaging tasks for geometrically distorted images. The DINN outputs consistent latent features for images that are geometrically distorted but represent the same underlying object or scene. The idea of DINN is to incorporate a simple component, called the quasiconformal transformer network (QCTN), into other existing deep networks for imaging tasks. The QCTN is a deep neural network that outputs a quasiconformal map, which can be used to transform a geometrically distorted image into an improved version that is closer to the distribution of natural or good images. It first outputs a Beltrami coefficient, which measures the quasiconformality of the output deformation map. By controlling the Beltrami coefficient, the local geometric distortion under the quasiconformal mapping can be controlled. The QCTN is lightweight and simple, which can be readily integrated into other existing deep neural networks to enhance their performance. Leveraging our framework, we have developed an image classification network that achieves accurate classification of distorted images. Our proposed framework has been applied to restore geometrically distorted images by atmospheric turbulence and water turbulence. DINN outperforms existing GAN-based restoration methods under these scenarios, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Additionally, we apply our proposed framework to the 1-1 verification of human face images under atmospheric turbulence and achieve satisfactory performance, further demonstrating the efficacy of our approach.

From pre-trained language model (PLM) to large language model (LLM), the field of natural language processing (NLP) has witnessed steep performance gains and wide practical uses. The evaluation of a research field guides its direction of improvement. However, LLMs are extremely hard to thoroughly evaluate for two reasons. First of all, traditional NLP tasks become inadequate due to the excellent performance of LLM. Secondly, existing evaluation tasks are difficult to keep up with the wide range of applications in real-world scenarios. To tackle these problems, existing works proposed various benchmarks to better evaluate LLMs. To clarify the numerous evaluation tasks in both academia and industry, we investigate multiple papers concerning LLM evaluations. We summarize 4 core competencies of LLM, including reasoning, knowledge, reliability, and safety. For every competency, we introduce its definition, corresponding benchmarks, and metrics. Under this competency architecture, similar tasks are combined to reflect corresponding ability, while new tasks can also be easily added into the system. Finally, we give our suggestions on the future direction of LLM's evaluation.

The analysis of mapping relationships and distortions in multidimensional data poses a significant challenge in contemporary research. While Beltrami coefficients offer a precise description of distortions in two-dimensional mappings, current tools lack this capability in the context of three-dimensional space. This paper presents a novel approach: a 3D quasiconformal representation that captures the local dilation of 3D mappings, along with an algorithm that establishes a connection between this representation and the corresponding mapping. Experimental results showcase the algorithm's effectiveness in eliminating foldings in 3D mappings, as well as in mapping reconstruction and generation. These features bear a resemblance to the 2D Linear Beltrami Solver technique. The work presented in this paper offers a promising solution for the precise analysis and adjustment of distortions in 3D data and mappings.

Multi-modal sarcasm detection has attracted much recent attention. Nevertheless, the existing benchmark (MMSD) has some shortcomings that hinder the development of reliable multi-modal sarcasm detection system: (1) There are some spurious cues in MMSD, leading to the model bias learning; (2) The negative samples in MMSD are not always reasonable. To solve the aforementioned issues, we introduce MMSD2.0, a correction dataset that fixes the shortcomings of MMSD, by removing the spurious cues and re-annotating the unreasonable samples. Meanwhile, we present a novel framework called multi-view CLIP that is capable of leveraging multi-grained cues from multiple perspectives (i.e., text, image, and text-image interaction view) for multi-modal sarcasm detection. Extensive experiments show that MMSD2.0 is a valuable benchmark for building reliable multi-modal sarcasm detection systems and multi-view CLIP can significantly outperform the previous best baselines., Comment: Accepted by ACL2023 Findings

Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) is one of the core components of a task-oriented dialogue system, which aims to extract the semantic meaning of user queries (e.g., intents and slots). In this work, we introduce OpenSLU, an open-source toolkit to provide a unified, modularized, and extensible toolkit for spoken language understanding. Specifically, OpenSLU unifies 10 SLU models for both single-intent and multi-intent scenarios, which support both non-pretrained and pretrained models simultaneously. Additionally, OpenSLU is highly modularized and extensible by decomposing the model architecture, inference, and learning process into reusable modules, which allows researchers to quickly set up SLU experiments with highly flexible configurations. Zero-shot dialogue understanding aims to enable dialogue to track the user's needs without any training data, which has gained increasing attention. In this work, we investigate the understanding ability of ChatGPT for zero-shot dialogue understanding tasks including spoken language understanding (SLU) and dialogue state tracking (DST). Experimental results on four popular benchmarks reveal the great potential of ChatGPT for zero-shot dialogue understanding. In addition, extensive analysis shows that ChatGPT benefits from the multi-turn interactive prompt in the DST task but struggles to perform slot filling for SLU. Finally, we summarize several unexpected behaviors of ChatGPT in dialogue understanding tasks, hoping to provide some insights for future research on building zero-shot dialogue understanding systems with Large Language Models (LLMs)., Comment: Technical Report

Multilingual spoken language understanding (SLU) consists of two sub-tasks, namely intent detection and slot filling. To improve the performance of these two sub-tasks, we propose to use consistency regularization based on a hybrid data augmentation strategy. The consistency regularization enforces the predicted distributions for an example and its semantically equivalent augmentation to be consistent. We conduct experiments on the MASSIVE dataset under both full-dataset and zero-shot settings. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method improves the performance on both intent detection and slot filling tasks. In medical imaging, surface registration is extensively used for performing systematic comparisons between anatomical structures, with a prime example being the highly convoluted brain cortical surfaces. To obtain a meaningful registration, a common approach is to identify prominent features on the surfaces and establish a low-distortion mapping between them with the feature correspondence encoded as landmark constraints. Prior registration works have primarily focused on using manually labeled landmarks and solving highly nonlinear optimization problems, which are time-consuming and hence hinder practical applications. In this work, we propose a novel framework for the automatic landmark detection and registration of brain cortical surfaces using quasi-conformal geometry and convolutional neural networks. We first develop a landmark detection network (LD-Net) that allows for the automatic extraction of landmark curves given two prescribed starting and ending points based on the surface geometry. We then utilize the detected landmarks and quasi-conformal theory for achieving the surface registration. Specifically, we develop a coefficient prediction network (CP-Net) for predicting the Beltrami coefficients associated with the desired landmark-based registration and a mapping network called the disk Beltrami solver network (DBS-Net) for generating quasi-conformal mappings from the predicted Beltrami coefficients, with the bijectivity guaranteed by quasi-conformal theory. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework. Altogether, our work paves a new way for surface-based morphometry and medical shape analysis.

Due to high data demands of current methods, attention to zero-shot cross-lingual spoken language understanding (SLU) has grown, as such approaches greatly reduce human annotation effort. However, existing models solely rely on shared parameters, which can only perform implicit alignment across languages. We present Global--Local Contrastive Learning Framework (GL-CLeF) to address this shortcoming. Specifically, we employ contrastive learning, leveraging bilingual dictionaries to construct multilingual views of the same utterance, then encourage their representations to be more similar than negative example pairs, which achieves to explicitly aligned representations of similar sentences across languages. In addition, a key step in GL-CLeF is a proposed Local and Global component, which achieves a fine-grained cross-lingual transfer (i.e., sentence-level Local intent transfer, token-level Local slot transfer, and semantic-level Global transfer across intent and slot). Experiments on MultiATIS++ show that GL-CLeF achieves the best performance and successfully pulls representations of similar sentences across languages closer., Comment: Accepted at ACL2022 Main Conference

Many imaging problems can be formulated as mapping problems. A general mapping problem aims to obtain an optimal mapping that minimizes an energy functional subject to the given constraints. Existing methods to solve the mapping problems are often inefficient and can sometimes get trapped in local minima. An extra challenge arises when the optimal mapping is required to be diffeomorphic. In this work, we address the problem by proposing a deep-learning framework based on the Quasiconformal (QC) Teichmuller theories. The main strategy is to learn the Beltrami coefficient (BC) that represents a mapping as the latent feature vector in the deep neural network. The BC measures the local geometric distortion under the mapping, with which the interpretability of the deep neural network can be enhanced. Under this framework, the diffeomorphic property of the mapping can be controlled via a simple activation function within the network. The optimal mapping can also be easily regularized by integrating the BC into the loss function. A crucial advantage of the proposed framework is that once the network is successfully trained, the optimized mapping corresponding to each input data information can be obtained in real time. To examine the efficacy of the proposed framework, we apply the method to the diffeomorphic image registration problem. Experimental results outperform other state-of-the-art registration algorithms in both efficiency and accuracy, which demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework to solve the mapping problem.

Consistency Identification has obtained remarkable success on open-domain dialogue, which can be used for preventing inconsistent response generation. However, in contrast to the rapid development in open-domain dialogue, few efforts have been made to the task-oriented dialogue direction. In this paper, we argue that consistency problem is more urgent in task-oriented domain. To facilitate the research, we introduce CI-ToD, a novel dataset for Consistency Identification in Task-oriented Dialog system. In addition, we not only annotate the single label to enable the model to judge whether the system response is contradictory, but also provide more fine-grained labels (i.e., Dialogue History Inconsistency, User Query Inconsistency and Knowledge Base Inconsistency) to encourage model to know what inconsistent sources lead to it. Empirical results show that state-of-the-art methods only achieve 51.3%, which is far behind the human performance of 93.2%, indicating that there is ample room for improving consistency identification ability. Finally, we conduct exhaustive experiments and qualitative analysis to comprehend key challenges and provide guidance for future directions.
