Subwavelength optical resonators with spatiotemporal control of light are essential to the miniaturization of optical devices. In this work, chemically synthesized transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanowires are exploited as a new type of dielectric nanoresonators to simultaneously support pronounced excitonic and Mie resonances. Strong light-matter couplings and tunable exciton polaritons in individual nanowires are demonstrated. In addition, the excitonic responses can be reversibly modulated with excellent reproducibility, offering the potential for developing tunable optical nanodevices. Being in the mobile colloidal state with highly tunable optical properties, the TMDC nanoresonators will find promising applications in integrated active optical devices, including all-optical switches and sensors.

Subwavelength nanostructures with tunable compositions and geometries show favorable optical functionalities for the implementation of nanophotonic systems. Precise and versatile control of structural configurations on solid substrates is essential for their applications in on-chip devices. Here, we report all-solid-phase reconfigurable chiral nanostructures with silicon nanoparticles and nanowires as the building blocks in which the configuration and chiroptical response can be tailored on-demand by dynamic manipulation of the silicon nanoparticle. We reveal that the optical chirality originates from the handedness-dependent coupling between optical resonances of the silicon nanoparticle and the silicon nanowire via numerical simulations and coupled-mode theory analysis. Furthermore, the coexisting electric and magnetic resonances support strong enhancement of optical near-field chirality, which enables label-free enantiodiscrimination of biomolecules in single nanostructures. Our results not only provide insight into the design of functional high-index materials but also bring new strategies to develop adaptive devices for photonic and electronic applications.

Constructing colloidal particles into functional nanostructures, materials, and devices is a promising yet challenging direction. Many optical techniques have been developed to trap, manipulate, assemble, and print colloidal particles from aqueous solutions into desired configurations on solid substrates. However, these techniques operated in liquid environments generally suffer from pattern collapses, Brownian motion, and challenges that come with reconfigurable assembly. Here, we develop an all-optical technique, termed optothermally-gated photon nudging (OPN), for the versatile manipulation and dynamic patterning of a variety of colloidal particles on a solid substrate at nanoscale accuracy. OPN takes advantage of a thin surfactant layer to optothermally modulate the particle-substrate interaction, which enables the manipulation of colloidal particles on solid substrates with optical scattering force. Along with in situ optical spectroscopy, our non-invasive and contactless nanomanipulation technique will find various applications in nanofabrication, nanophotonics, nanoelectronics, and colloidal sciences.

Bulk transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanostructures are regarded as promising material candidates for integrated photonics due to their high refractive index at the near‐infrared wavelengths. In this work, colloidal TMDC waveguides with tailorable dimensions are prepared by a scalable synthetic approach. The optical waveguiding properties of colloidal nanowires are studied by the near‐field nanoimaging technique. In addition to dependence on thickness and wavelength, the excitonic responses and resultant waveguide modes in TMDC nanowires can be modulated by the environmental temperature. With the high‐throughput production and tunable optical properties, colloidal TMDC nanowires highlight the potential for active optical components and integrated photonic devices. Developing materials for active matter that can efficiently respond to external stimuli with designed multifold mechanical motions remains a major challenge, and overcoming this will greatly propel the advancement of micromachines and microrobots toward unprecedented biomedical, electronic, and particle-separation applications. Here, we propose an innovative working mechanism that allows multifold-translational-motion control of semiconductor microentities by AC dielectrophoresis with simple visible-light stimulation. We study the dielectrophoresis forces on semiconducting particles of various geometries in aqueous suspension by modeling with the consideration of both the Maxwell–Wagner relaxation and the electrical-double-layer-charging effect. With the obtained understanding, we rationally design a manipulation system that can versatilely transport semiconductors and orient them toward desired directions simultaneously by tuning the light intensity in an electric field. This research could provide insights toward developing a new class of micromachines with rarely found control flexibility and precision and offer a new route toward separation and purification of optoelectric microparticles of different geometries. Self‐powered untethered robots that can meander unrestrictedly, squeeze into small spaces, and operate in diverse harsh environments have received immense attention in recent years. As there is not a universal solution that can be applied to power robots with diverse forms, service functions, and a broad size range from nanometers to meters, the design, fabrication, and implementation of power systems with a suitable weight, desired power and operation duration, and adaptiveness to confined spaces and operation conditions represent one of the greatest challenges in robotic research. Herein, an overview of recent progress and challenges in developing the next‐generation energy harvesting and storage technologies is provided, including direct energy harvesting, energy storage and conversion, and wireless energy transmission for robots across all scales. At present, the direct preparation of polymer foam with negative Poisson ratio (auxetic foam) from nonpolar polymer resins is still a challenge. Herein, a one‐pot CO2 foaming method is established to directly prepare closed‐cell auxetic foams with different cellular structures (bimodal cell structure and homogeneous cell structure) from polypropylene (PP) resin by introducing hydrophilic additives (NaCl) into PP and regulating foaming conditions. The effects of foaming temperature, saturation time, and size of added NaCl on Poisson's ratio are studied. The comparison with PP/talc composites shows that the presence of NaCl plays a crucial role in the formation of the negative Poisson ratio of foam. Furthermore, the regulation of the size of negative Poisson ratio is achieved by controlling the amount of NaCl in PP/NaCl composites. The performances of porous graphitic foams in flexible electronic, electrochemical, and thermal management devices can be enhanced by increasing the interfacial charge or heat transport between the 3D graphitic network and the functional materials filled into the pore space. Herein, an investigation of the effects of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) conditions on the structure and thermal conductivities of both graphitic foams grown from reticular Ni foams and dendritic graphitic foams (DGFs) synthesized from electrodeposited dendritic Ni foams is reported. A room‐temperature solid thermal conductivity (κs) up to 800 W m−1 K−1 is obtained from the graphitic foams (GF) with less than 1% volume fraction. In comparison, the DGFs, which provide a large increase of the specific surface area for enhanced interfacial heat transfer, achieve an effective thermal conductivity of 2.5 ± 0.2 W m−1 K−1 because of an enhanced volume fraction to about 5% despite a compromised κs around 200 W m−1 K−1 due to the increased defect density. Through systematical variations of the catalyst template morphology and CVD conditions, this work reveals the distinct roles of catalyst surface curvature and graphitic strut thickness in controlling the properties of GFs and DGFs for thermal management.
