This paper explores the issues involved in the linguistic characterisation of disordered discourse and the ways in which a Systemic Functional Linguistic framework addresses these issues. For many years, language disorders were described in terms of formal grammars, with "breakdown" discussed in terms of one or more of the traditional levels of language, i.e., phonology, syntax, and semantics. While it was acknowledged that an individual could have difficulty at one or more of these levels, each was viewed quite separately, with semantics viewed largely from a referential perspective. More recent approaches using functional grammar have broadened this view of language and have provided a model of language that re-conceptualises the notion of meaning and embraces context as integral to its organisation. Such a model has introduced a different perspective on language into clinical fields, and has enabled researchers and clinicians to explore the skills of speakers with language disorders across a variety of situations and contextual variables, examining the linguistic resources still available to them. This paper introduces principles involved in a functional framework and provides an overview of how these principles have been applied to language disorders to date. In addition, the notion of "disorder" itself is discussed as it is situated in this alternative model.

Performance theorist Herbert Blau's "The Audience" (Baltimore and London, Johns Hopkins Press, 1990) is an important yet neglected theoretical text on theatre audience. Deconstructive, dense and allusive in nature, Blau's text creates a real challenge for his reader. This paper presents a study of "The Audience" employing what I am calling literature-voiced research poetry. This consists of found poems created from certain kinds of theoretical texts, particularly those that are, like Blau's, rich, thick and metaphorical in nature. In creating these found poems, I am moving into using an arts-based research methodology as a way of knowing within an inquiry process, as well as a way of analysing and representing data (Oberg, A., Arts-based educational research, Notes from presentation at Association for Graduate Education Students (AGES) meeting, University of Victoria, 18 March 2003). My dissertation, "Marked by performance: a curriculum theory and poetics for audience in the performing arts" (in progress), will include literature-voiced research poems as part of my literature review and will move into researcher-voiced and participant-voiced poems that attempt to capture the residue of performance, and how the experience of performance (specifically theatre performance) has the potential to mark us, to shake us to our core, as Aristotle, Artaud, Barker, Brecht, Grotowski, Nietzsche, and other theatre theorists have long-hypothesized. The completed study will present poetic co-created representations of how performing artists, critics and other highly-experienced audiences, as well as students of audience education (secondary and post-secondary), experience the residue of performances throughout their lives as significant cognitive, affective, social and even potentially profound spiritual events. It goes on to pose the question: what are the implications of these poetic understandings of audience-in-performance (AIP) for emerging curricula of audience and performance studies in education? Thus, the study is an attempt to express these almost inexpressible experiences through poetry for the curricular purpose that, within our increasingly dramatized and performative culture, audience-in-performance education is an important yet neglected aspect of art education and education in general.

This paper presents nationally representative information about the extent of disproportionate gender representation in special education for the disability conditions of learning disabilities, mental retardation, and emotional disturbance. Recommendations are made for research to elucidate the basis for differences, improved data collection and reporting by gender, and changes in practice. (Contains references.) (Author/DB)

Traditional leadership preparation programs and licensure requirements give only token consideration to social justice concerns. This article examines the emerging social justice discourse in the educational administration field and discusses several challenges that must be considered as universities and others attempt to prepare school leaders for social justice critique and activism. Social justice scholarship in educational leadership emphasizes moral values, justice, respect, care, and equity; always in the forefront is a consciousness about the impact of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and disability on schools and students' learning. School leadership programs face the challenge of preparing new leaders to critically inquire into the structures and norms that result in inequitable schooling for many students and to undertake an advocacy role to influence educational policies to achieve social justice.

This article examines the rise of Christian religious conservatism and explores whether the theological views of the conservative Christian movement are compatible with the liberal social welfare state. The authors conclude that the driving force behind social change should remain with the state, even though faith-based initiatives can provide some basic supports that the social welfare state can use.

Discusses two recent court decisions--"Urofsky v. Gilmore" and "Bonnell v. Lorenzo"--that concern the role of faculty within the university. Concludes that as the law now stands, faculty have no special First Amendment right to academic freedom. (Contains 93 references.) (Author/MLF)

Argues that judicial deference to a university's denial of tenure based on an allegedly unclear accent may be unjust. Examines problems in the 1998 Amendment to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) in its application to student disciplinary records. Reviews enactment and development of FERPA and discusses recent debate over "educational records" provision. Describes the 1998 Guckenberger federal lawsuit from the perspective of attorneys who litigated on behalf of Boston University. Discusses events leading up to the lawsuit (which claimed Boston University failed to provide reasonable accommodations for a student with learning disabilities), policy changes at the university, the trial itself, and finally the court's complex decision, seen as mostly in the university's favor. The increased use of computer matching to detect fraud and abuse in government programs has led to concerns for the privacy of personal information.
