Since the Food and Drug Administration (“FDAâ€) has control over the regulation of dietary supplements, this paper discusses whether the current regulation is sufficient to guard the safety of the individuals using “sports products.†Recently, the sudden deaths of a number of professional and collegiate athletes have been linked to the use of performance enhancing sports products, and despite other possible causes, many families and scholars have blamed dietary supplements for these lost lives. Therefore, this paper purports to prove that the current FDA regulations are not stringent enough because they do not subject dietary supplements to the pre-market approval as with drugs and allow life-threatening products to enter and remain in the market. For evidence, this paper compares different past and present FDA regulations, the scientific risks of the most popular sports supplements, the rigorous regulation by other associations, and the real life stories of athletes’ deaths. In conclusion, this paper will demonstrate that the current drug requirements should apply to dietary supplements to give the FDA the ability to regulate further dietary supplements that warrant stricter regulation.

Americans spend billions of dollars a year betting on sports, the vast majority of it illegally through offshore websites, local bookies and office pools. Some states are considering legalizing sports gambling in order to regulate and tax it. But an appellate court in August blocked a 2014 New Jersey law to legalize sports betting, saying it violated a 1992 federal ban on such gambling in states where it was not already legal. New Jersey's experience is at the heart of a growing debate over whether other states should be allowed to legalize sports betting. Proponents say doing so would produce additional tax revenues, discourage organized crime, protect gamblers from fraud and decrease match-fixing. But opponents challenge each of those arguments and also say legalized sports betting could increase gambling addiction. Meanwhile, professional sports leagues are investing in daily fantasy sports, which some states have legalized as games of skill and others have defined as an illegal form of betting. Rising medical costs and declining tax revenues in recent years have forced many states to make deep cuts in services provided by Medicaid, the health care program for the poor. Both state and federal officials want to lower the program's spiraling costs -- largely from prescription drugs and long-term care -- but there is widespread disagreement about what changes are needed. Republicans say Medicaid -- the nation's largest health insurance program -- needs a radical overhaul. Instead of an unlimited entitlement program, they want to convert at least part of the program into a capped grant, which would give states more freedom from federal rules. Democrats say caps would be inequitable because they would lead to deeper cuts in tough economic times. As baseball executives ponder further expansion, as players' salaries continue to soar and as minorities turn to other sports, big league baseball seems increasingly distant from its sandlot roots. American youth are in worse physical shape than earlier generations, many fitness experts claim. According to the U.S. surgeon general, only about one-half of U.S. children get regular exercise, and one-fourth don't take part in physical activity at all. As a result, obesity among children and adolescents has increased substantially since the 1960s. The conveniences of modern life - notably television, video games and computers - get much of the blame for creating a nation of youthful couch potatoes. In addition, school officials often scale back or eliminate physical education programs when budget squeezes occur. Nonetheless, innovative physical educators are working to reverse the trend by acquainting kids with activities that interest them - and that can help them maintain fitness throughout life. The difference in today's climate is that new government and industry disclosure rules have prompted many critics to conclude that CEO pay is now more properly linked to actual performance. Every fall, sports fans by the millions sit glued to their TV sets for a season of college and professional football and basketball. But high school games often command even fiercer devotion. Beyond the relative handful of communities with college or pro teams, interscholastic sports are literally the only games in town. High school sports enjoys widespread loyalty and respect. But there are growing concerns that it is not immune from the drug and academic scandals that have hit college and pro teams in recent years. Moreover, conflicts between team owners and players have made sports law an increasingly attractive specialty for attorneys. The recently ended National Hockey League lockout and the ongoing major-league baseball strike are only the latest in a long string of similar collective-bargaining showdowns. Sports fans, meanwhile, complain of neglect by both players and management. However, recent public opinion polls and the full houses that greeted the belated start of the hockey season suggest fans are eager to forgive and forget, as they have always done in the past. Despite their great diversity, Native Americans share a fierce attachment to the land. But of the 1.9 billion acres that Native Americans roamed 500 years ago, only 46 million acres remain in Indian hands today. The Indians' lost heritage helps explain their outrage over this year's 500th anniversary celebrations of Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the New World. Columbus, to the Indians, was not a brave discoverer but a savage despoiler who brought slavery, disease and genocide. While Indians continue to battle oppressive social and health problems, they also are fighting for new respect. This includes denouncing the use of Indian names for professional and school sports teams. Corporate chiefs are on the hot seat nowadays as the public reels with each report of a record-setting executive pay package. With salary and stock deals in the range of $80 million at companies such as Time Warner, H.J. Heinz and Coca-Cola, average wage earners beset by economic recession are reacting with anger and amazement. Disgruntled shareholders are descending on annual meetings to charge that officers are even being rewarded when company performance is poor. Defenders say high salaries are needed to attract top talent and to give executives an incentive to make tough decisions.
