The need set by a computational industry to increase processing power, while simultaneously reducing the energy consumption of data centers became a challenge for modern computational systems. In this work, we propose an optical communication solution, that could serve as a building block for future computing systems, due to its versatility. The solution arises from Landauer principle and utilizes reversible logic, manifested as an optical logical gate with structured light, here represented as Laguerre-Gaussian modes. We introduced an information encoding technique that employs phase shift as an information carrier and incorporates multi-valued logic in the form of a ternary system. In the experimental validation, the free space communication protocol is implemented to determine the similarity between two images. Obtained results are compared with their binary counterparts, illustrating denser information capacity and enhanced information security, which underscores its capability to transmit and process both quantum and classical information.

We study phonon modes associated with magnetic vortex lattices of finite isospin chiral perturbation theory near the upper critical point by introducing quasimomentum fluctuations to the lattice and calculate dispersion relations associated with the optical and acoustic modes. We find that one of the acoustic modes is massless and that its energy for small transverse quasimomentum is quartic (due the presence of an isospin chemical potential), which is significantly softer than the "supersoft" (quadratic) massless mode of the Abelian Higgs Model (AHM). Due to the presence of derivative interactions, which is absent in the AHM, the speed of the longitudinal mode depends on both the isospin chemical potential and the external magnetic field. The problem of the charged-particle motion in an axisymmetric magnetic-dipole geometry is used to assess the validity of Hamiltonian guiding-center theory, which includes higher-order corrections associated with guiding-center polarization induced by magnetic-field nonuniformity. When a magnetically-confined charged-particle orbit is regular (i.e., its guiding-center magnetic moment is adiabatically invariant), the guiding-center approximation, which conserves both energy and azimuthal canonical angular momentum, is shown to be faithful to the particle orbit when guiding-center polarization effects are taken into account., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

In this paper we provide formulas for the expectation of a conditional game duration in a finite state-space one-dimensional gambler's ruin problem with arbitrary winning $p(n)$ and losing $q(n)$ probabilities (i.e., they depend on the current fortune). The formulas are stated in terms of the parameters of the system. Beyer and Waterman [Mathematics Magazine, 50(1), 1977] showed that for the classical gambler's ruin problem the distribution of a conditional absorption time is symmetric in $p$ and $q$. Our formulas imply that for non-constant winning/losing probabilities the expectation of a conditional game duration is symmetric in these probabilities (i.e., it is the same if we exchange $p(n)$ with $q(n)$) as long as a ratio $q(n)/p(n)$ is constant. Most of the formulas are applied to a non-symmetric random walk on a circle/polygon. Moreover, for a symmetric random walk on a circle we construct an optimal strong stationary dual chain -- which turns out to be an absorbing, non-symmetric, birth and death chain. We apply our results and provide a formula for its expected absorption time, which is a fastest strong stationary time for the aforementioned symmetric random walk on a circle. This way we improve upon a result of Diaconis and Fill [The Annals of Probability, 18(4), 1990], where strong stationary time -- however not the fastest -- was constructed. For a family of multidimensional gambler models we provide formulas for the winning probabilities (in terms of parameters of the system) and for the distribution of game duration (in terms of eigenvalues of underlying one-dimensional games). These formulas were known for one-dimensional case - initially proofs were purely analytical, later probabilistic construction has been given. Concerning the game duration, in many cases our approach yields sample-path constructions. We heavily exploit intertwining between (not necessary) stochastic matrices (for game duration results), a notion of Siegmund duality (for winning/ruin probabilities), and a notion of Kronecker products., Comment: 23 pages

Programmers make rich use of natural language in the source code they write through identifiers and comments. Source code identifiers are selected from a pool of tokens which are strongly related to the meaning, naming conventions, and context. These tokens are often combined to produce more precise and obvious designations. Such multi-part identifiers count for 97% of all naming tokens in the Public Git Archive - the largest dataset of Git repositories to date. We introduce a bidirectional LSTM recurrent neural network to detect subtokens in source code identifiers. We trained that network on 41.7 million distinct splittable identifiers collected from 182,014 open source projects in Public Git Archive, and show that it outperforms several other machine learning models. The proposed network can be used to improve the upstream models which are based on source code identifiers, as well as improving developer experience allowing writing code without switching the keyboard case., Comment: 8 pages

In this paper, we present steady aerodynamic measurements for an 18% scale model of a Gulfstream air-craft. The high fidelity and highly-instrumented semi-span model was developed to perform detailed aeroacoustic studies of airframe noise associated with main landing gear/flap components and gear-flap interaction noise, as well as to evaluate novel noise reduction concepts. The aeroacoustic tests, being conducted in the NASA Langley Research Center 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel, are split into two entries. The first entry, completed November 2010, was entirely devoted to the detailed mapping of the aerodynamic characteristics of the fabricated model. Flap deflections of 39?, 20?, and 0? with the main landing gear on and off were tested at Mach numbers of 0.16, 0.20, and 0.24. Additionally, for each flap deflection, the model was tested with the tunnel both in the closed-wall and open-wall (jet) modes. During this first entry, global forces (lift and drag) and extensive steady and unsteady surface pressure measurements were obtained. Preliminary analysis of the measured forces indicates that lift, drag, and stall characteristics compare favorably with Gulfstream?s high Reynolds number flight data. The favorable comparison between wind-tunnel and flight data allows the semi-span model to be used as a test bed for developing/evaluating airframe noise reduction concepts under a relevant environment. Moreover, initial comparison of the aerodynamic measurements obtained with the tunnel in the closed- and open-wall configurations shows similar aerodynamic behavior. This permits the acoustic and off-surface flow measurements, planned for the second entry, to be conducted with the tunnel in the open-jet mode.

Connexin43 (Cx43) and Cx45 are co-expressed in a number of different tissues. Studies demonstrated that Cx45 transfected ROS (ROS/Cx45) cells, were less permeable to low molecular weight dyes than untransfected ROS cells, that have gap junctions made of Cx43. This suggests that there may be a functionally important interaction between Cx43 and Cx45 in these cells. One way in which these proteins may interact is by associating with the same set of proteins. In order to isolate connexin interacting proteins, we isolated Cx45 from Cx45 transfected ROS cells (ROS/Cx45 cells) under mild detergent conditions. These studies showed that Cx45 co-purified with the tight junction protein, ZO-1. Immunofluorescence studies of ROS/Cx45 cells simultaneously stained with polyclonal Cx45 antibody and a monoclonal ZO-1 antibody showed that Cx45 and ZO-1 colocalized in ROS/Cx45 cells. Furthermore we found that ZO-1 could bind to peptides derived from the carboxyl terminal of Cx45 that had been covalently bound to an agarose resin. These data suggests that Cx45 and ZO-1 directly interact in ROS/Cx45 cells.

Drug shortages are a growing problem in the United States. The scope and severity of drug shortages has caught the public eye and prodded the FDA into action. Among the potential causes of drug shortages are Medicare Part B reimbursement policies, the 340B federal drug rebate program, market consolidation and competition in the pharmaceutical industry, regulatory overreach by the FDA and manufacturing and supply problems at production plants. What these causes have in common is that they can all be understood as dampening profits for manufacturers in one way or another. Some causes effectively impose price caps which prevent manufacturers from charging a free-market price for their products. Other causes create cost floors which stymie cost-cutting efforts by manufacturers. Whether by elevating costs or reducing prices, these contributors dampen profits, and without profits, incentives to produce evaporate. Pulling these conclusions together, it becomes clear that the best approach to drug shortages is to make drug manufacture more attractive by removing price caps and reducing cost floors. Whether through tax subsidies, Medicare Part B and 340B drug rebate reform, or relaxed regulatory requirements, the most promising approach is one that makes drug manufacture more profitable.
