Search

This report reviews recent progress in computing Kubo formulas for general interacting Hamiltonians. The aim is to calculate electric and thermal magneto-conductivities in strong scattering regimes where Boltzmann equation and Hall conductivity proxies exceed their validity. Three primary approaches are explained. 1. Degeneracy-projected polarization formulas for Hall-type conductivities, which substantially reduce the number of calculated current matrix elements. These expressions generalize the Berry curvature integral formulas to imperfect lattices. 2. Continued fraction representation of dynamical longitudinal conductivities. The calculations produce a set of thermodynamic averages, which can be controllably extrapolated using their mathematical relations to low and high frequency conductivity asymptotics. 3. Hall-type coefficients summation formulas, which are constructed from thermodynamic averages. The thermodynamic formulas are derived in the operator Hilbert space formalism, which avoids the opacity and high computational cost of the Hamiltonian eigenspectrum. The coefficients can be obtained by well established imaginary-time Monte Carlo sampling, high temperature expansion, traces of operator products, and variational wavefunctions at low temperatures. We demonstrate the power of approaches 1--3 by their application to well known models of lattice electrons and bosons. The calculations clarify the far-reaching influence of strong local interactions on the metallic transport near Mott insulators. Conductivities and Hall coefficients of two dimensional hard core bosons are calculated using the thermodynamic expansions of Kubo formulas. At temperatures above the superfluid transition, the resistivity rises linearly and is weakly dependent on boson filling. The zeroth order Hall coefficient diverges toward zero and unit fillings, and reverses its sign at half filling. The correction terms, which are calculated up to fourth (Krylov) orders, do not alter this behavior. The high temperature thermal Hall coefficient is reversed relative to the electric Hall coefficient. The in-plane and out-of-plane superconducting stiffness of LSCO rings appear to vanish at different transition temperatures, which contradicts thermodynamical expectation. In addition, we observe a surprisingly strong dependence of the out-of-plane stiffness transition on sample width. With evidence from Monte Carlo simulations, this effect is explained by very small ratio $\alpha$ of interplane over intraplane superconducting stiffnesses. For three dimensional rings of millimeter dimensions, a crossover from layered three dimensional to quasi one dimensional behavior occurs at temperatures near the thermodynamic transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, and the out of-plane stiffness appears to vanish below $T_{\rm c}$ by a temperature shift of order $\alpha L_a/\xi^\parallel$, where $L_a/\xi^\parallel$ is the sample's width over coherence length. Including the effects of layer-correlated disorder, the measured temperature shifts can be fit by $\alpha=4.1\times 10^{-5}$ near $T_{\rm c}$, which is significantly lower than its previously measured value near zero temperature.

The Hall coefficient exhibits anomalous behavior in lightly doped Mott insulators. For strongly interacting electrons its computation has been challenged by analytical and numerical obstacles. We calculate the leading contributions in the recently derived thermodynamic formula for the Hall coefficient. We obtain its doping and temperature dependence for the square lattice tJ-model at high temperatures. The second order corrections are evaluated to be negligible. Quantum Monte Carlo sampling extends our results to lower temperatures. We find a divergence of the Hall coefficient toward the Mott limit and a sign reversal relative to Boltzmann equation's weak scattering prediction. The Hall current near the Mott phase is carried by a low density of spin-entangled vacancies, which should constitute the Cooper pairs in any superconducting phase at lower temperatures.

Kubo formulas for Hall, transverse thermoelectric and thermal Hall conductivities are simplified into on-shell commutators of degeneracy projected polarizations. The new expressions are computationally economical, and apply to general Hamiltonians without a gap restriction. We show that Hall currents in open boundaries are carried by gapless chiral excitations. Extrapolation of finite lattice calculations to the DC-thermodynamic limit is demonstrated for a disordered metal.

A recently developed formula for the Hall coefficient [A. Auerbach, Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 66601 (2018)] is applied to nodal line and Weyl semimetals (including graphene), and to spin-orbit split semiconductor bands in two and three dimensions. The calculation reduces to a ratio of two equilibrium susceptibilities, where corrections are negligible at weak disorder. Deviations from Drude's inverse carrier density are associated with band degeneracies, Fermi surface topology, and interband scattering. Magnetotransport theory of layered superconductors in the flux flow steady state is revisited. Longstanding controversies concerning observed Hall sign reversals are resolved. The conductivity separates into a Bardeen-Stephen vortex core contribution, and a Hall conductivity due to moving vortex charge. This charge, which is responsible for Hall anomaly, diverges logarithmically at weak magnetic field. Its values can be extracted from magetoresistivity data by extrapolation of vortex core Hall angle from the normal phase. Hall anomalies in YBCO, BSCCO, and NCCO data are consistent with theoretical estimates based on doping dependence of London penetration depths. In the appendices, we derive the Streda formula for the hydrodynamical Hall conductivity, and refute previously assumed relevance of Galilean symmetry to Hall anomalies., Comment: Submission to SciPost

Exact formulas for the Hall coefficient, modified Nernst coefficient, and thermal Hall coefficient of metals are derived from the Kubo formula. These coefficients depend exclusively on equilibrium (time independent) susceptibilities, which are significantly easier to compute than conductivities. For weak isotropic scattering, Boltzmann theory is recovered. For strong scattering, well controlled methods for thermodynamic functions are available. As an example, the Hall sign reversals of lattice bosons near the Mott insulator phases are determined. An exact formula for the temperature dependent Hall number of metals is derived. It is valid for non-relativistic fermions or bosons, with arbitrary potential and interaction. This DC transport coefficient is proven to (remarkably) depend solely on equilibrium susceptibilities, which are more amenable to numerical algorithms than the conductivity. An application to strongly correlated phases is demonstrated by calculating the Hall sign in the vicinity of Mott phases of lattice bosons., Comment: 2 Figures, including supplementary material

The one dimensional $SU(2)$ Kondo Lattice model is studied by Density Matrix Renormalization Group away from half-filling. We find signatures of a Heavy Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid (HTLL) phase, which describes one dimensional Heavy Fermions. We compute the wave-vector dependent charge and spin susceptibilities. Our results establish divergent charge and spin correlations at the large Fermi surface $k_F+\pi/2$, and its harmonics. We also find a signature of the hybridization gap at the small Fermi surface. We compare our $N\!=\!2$ results to the large-$N$ Slave Bosons mean field theory of the $SU(N)$ Kondo Lattice model, and find crucial effects of the RKKY interactions on the generation of renormalized effective mass for the $N\!=\!2$ model., Comment: 4 pages + supplemental information. The superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is considered an excellent example of a quantum phase transition which is driven by quantum fluctuations at zero temperature. The quantum critical point is characterized by a diverging correlation length and a vanishing energy scale. Low energy fluctuations near quantum criticality may be experimentally detected by specific heat, $c_{\rm p}$, measurements. Here, we use a unique highly sensitive experiment to measure $c_{\rm p}$ of two-dimensional granular Pb films through the SIT. The specific heat shows the usual jump at the mean field superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}^{\rm {mf}}$ marking the onset of Cooper pairs formation. As the film thickness is tuned toward the SIT, $T_{\rm c}^{\rm {mf}}$ is relatively unchanged, while the magnitude of the jump and low temperature specific heat increase significantly. This behaviour is taken as the thermodynamic fingerprint of quantum criticality in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

For weakly disordered fractional quantum Hall phases, the non linear photoconductivity is related to the charge susceptibility of the clean system by a Floquet boost. Thus, it may be possible to probe collective charge modes at finite wavevectors by electrical transport. Incompressible phases, irradiated at slightly above the magneto-roton gap, are predicted to exhibit negative photoconductivity and zero resistance states with spontaneous internal electric fields. We study the disordered Heisenberg spin chain, which exhibits many body localization at strong disorder, in the weak to moderate disorder regime. A continued fraction calculation of dynamical correlations is devised, using a variational extrapolation of recurrents. Good convergence for the infinite chain limit is shown. We find that the local spin correlations decay at long times as $C \sim t^{-\beta}$, while the conductivity exhibits a low frequency power law $\sigma \sim \omega^{\alpha}$. The exponents depict sub-diffusive behavior $ \beta < 1/2, \alpha> 0 $ at all finite disorders, and convergence to the scaling result, $\alpha+2\beta = 1$, at large disorders., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We provide a theoretical explanation for the optical modes observed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) on the bcc solid phase of helium 4 [T. Markovich, E. Polturak, J. Bossy, and E. Farhi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 195301 (2002)]. We argue that these excitations are amplitude (Higgs) modes associated with fluctuations of the crystal order parameter within the unit cell. We present an analysis of the modes based on an effective Ginzburg-Landau model, classify them according to their symmetry properties, and compute their signature in INS experiments. In addition, we calculate the dynamical structure factor by means of an ab intio quantum Monte Carlo simulation and find a finite frequency excitation at zero relative momentum., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

The concept of mass-generation via the Higgs mechanism was strongly inspired by earlier works on the Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect in superconductors. In quantum field theory, the excitations of longitudinal components of the Higgs field manifest as massive Higgs bosons. The analogous Higgs mode in superconductors has not yet been observed due to its rapid decay into particle-hole pairs. Following recent theories, however, the Higgs mode should decrease below the pairing gap $2\Delta$ and become visible in two-dimensional systems close to the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT). For experimental verification, we measured the complex terahertz transmission and tunneling density of states (DOS) of various thin films of superconducting NbN and InO close to criticality. Comparing both techniques reveals a growing discrepancy between the finite $2\Delta$ and the threshold energy for electromagnetic absorption which vanishes critically towards the SIT. We identify the excess absorption below $2\Delta$ as a strong evidence of the Higgs mode in two dimensional quantum critical superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Using a generalized reciprocity relation between charge and vortex conductivities at complex frequencies in two space dimensions, we identify the capacitance in the insulating phase as a measure of vortex condensate stiffness. We compute the ratio of boson superfluid stiffness to vortex condensate stiffness at mirror points to be 0.21(1) for the relativistic O(2) model. The product of dynamical conductivities at mirror points is used as a test of charge-vortex duality. Relativistic O(N) field theories are studied near the quantum critical point in two space dimensions. We compute dynamical correlations by large scale Monte Carlo simulations and numerical analytic continuation. In the ordered side, the scalar spectral function exhibits a universal peak at the Higgs mass. For N=3 and 4 we confirm its \omega^3 rise at low frequency. On the disordered side, the spectral function exhibits a sharp gap. For N=2, the dynamical conductivity rises above a threshold at the Higgs mass (density gap), in the superfluid (Mott insulator) phase. For charged bosons, (Josephson arrays) the power law rise above the Higgs mass, increases from two to four. Approximate charge-vortex duality is reflected in the ratio of imaginary conductivities on either side of the transition. We determine the critical conductivity to be \sigma^*_c = 0.3 (\pm 0.1) 4e^2/h. We study the relativistic O(N) field theory near the quantum critical point in 2+1 dimensions for N=2 and N=3. The scalar susceptibility is evaluated by Monte Carlo simulation. We show that the spectrum contains a peak associated with the Higgs mode, which remains well-defined all the way to the critical point. The Kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is mapped onto an effective Hamiltonian on the star superlattice by Contractor Renormalization. Comparison of ground state energies on large lattices to Density Matrix Renormalization Group justifies truncation of effective interactions at range 3. Within our accuracy, magnetic and translational symmetries are not broken (i.e. a spin liquid ground state). However, we discover doublet spectral degeneracies which signal the onset of p6 - chirality symmetry breaking. This is understood by simple mean field analysis. Experimentally, the p6 chiral order parameter should split the optical phonons degeneracy near the zone center. The amplitude mode is a ubiquitous collective excitation in condensed matter systems with broken continuous symmetry. It is expected in antiferromagnets, short coherence length superconductors, charge density waves, and lattice Bose condensates. Its detection is a valuable test of the corresponding field theory, and its mass gap measures the proximity to a quantum critical point. However, since the amplitude mode can decay into low-energy Goldstone modes, its experimental visibility has been questioned. Here we show that the visibility depends on the symmetry of the measured susceptibility. The longitudinal susceptibility diverges at low frequency as \chi_{\sigma\sigma} ~ i/\omega (d=2) or log(1/|\omega|) (d=3), which can completely obscure the amplitude peak. In contrast, the scalar susceptibility is suppressed by four extra powers of frequency, exposing the amplitude peak throughout the ordered phase. We discuss experimental setups for measuring the scalar susceptibility. The conductivity of the O(2) theory (relativistic superfluid) is a scalar response and therefore exhibits suppressed absorption below the Higgs mass threshold, \sigma ~ \omega^{2d+1}. In layered, short coherence length superconductors, (relevant e.g. to cuprates) this threshold is raised by the interlayer plasma frequency., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Graphene subject to a spatially uniform, circularly-polarized electric field supports a Floquet spectrum with properties akin to those of a topological insulator, including non-vanishing Chern numbers associated with bulk bands and current-carrying edge states. Transport properties of this system however are complicated by the non-equilibrium occupations of the Floquet states. We address this by considering transport in a two-terminal ribbon geometry for which the leads have well-defined chemical potentials, with an irradiated central scattering region. We demonstrate the presence of edge states, which for infinite mass boundary conditions may be associated with only one of the two valleys. At low frequencies, the bulk DC conductivity near zero energy is shown to be dominated by a series of states with very narrow anticrossings, leading to super-diffusive behavior. For very long ribbons, a ballistic regime emerges in which edge state transport dominates., Comment: 4.2 pages, 3 figures

We present a modified Lanczos algorithm to diagonalize lattice Hamiltonians with dramatically reduced memory requirements, {\em without restricting to variational ansatzes}. The lattice of size $N$ is partitioned into two subclusters. At each iteration the Lanczos vector is projected into two sets of $n_{{\rm svd}}$ smaller subcluster vectors using singular value decomposition. For low entanglement entropy $S_{ee}$, (satisfied by short range Hamiltonians), the truncation error is expected to vanish as $\exp(-n_{{\rm svd}}^{1/S_{ee}})$. Convergence is tested for the Heisenberg model on Kagom\'e clusters of 24, 30 and 36 sites, with no lattice symmetries exploited, using less than 15GB of dynamical memory. Generalization of the Lanczos-SVD algorithm to multiple partitioning is discussed, and comparisons to other techniques are given., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Magneto-transport of hard core bosons (HCB) is studied using an XXZ quantum spin model representation, appropriately gauged on the torus to allow for an external magnetic field. We find strong lattice effects near half filling. An effective quantum mechanical description of the vortex degrees of freedom is derived. Using semiclassical and numerical analysis we compute the vortex hopping energy, which at half filling is close to magnitude of the boson hopping energy. The critical quantum melting density of the vortex lattice is estimated at 6.5x10-5 vortices per unit cell. The Hall conductance is computed from the Chern numbers of the low energy eigenstates. At zero temperature, it reverses sign abruptly at half filling. At precisely half filling, all eigenstates are doubly degenerate for any odd number of flux quanta. We prove the exact degeneracies on the torus by constructing an SU(2) algebra of point-group symmetries, associated with the center of vorticity. This result is interpreted as if each vortex carries an internal spin-half degree of freedom ('vspin'), which can manifest itself as a charge density modulation in its core. Our findings suggest interesting experimental implications for vortex motion of cold atoms in optical lattices, and magnet-transport of short coherence length superconductors., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Two dimensional hard core bosons suffer strong scattering in the high temperature resistive state at half filling. The dynamical conductivity is calculated using non perturbative tools such as continued fractions, series expansions and exact diagonalization. We find a large temperature range with linearly increasing resistivity and broad dynamical conductivity, signaling a breakdown of Boltzmann-Drude quasiparticle transport theory. At zero temperature, a high frequency peak in the dynamical conductivity appears above a "Higgs mass" gap, and corresponds to order parameter magnitude fluctuations. We discuss the apparent similarity between conductivity of hard core bosons and phenomenological characteristics of cuprates, including the universal scaling of Homes et. al. A model of charged hole-pair bosons, with long range Coulomb interactions and very weak interlayer coupling, is used to calculate the order parameter -Phi- of underdoped cuprates. Model parameters are extracted from experimental superfluid densities and plasma frequencies. The temperature dependence -Phi(T)- is characterized by a 'trapezoidal' shape. At low temperatures, it declines slowly due to harmonic phase fluctuations which are suppressed by anisotropic plasma gaps. Above the single layer Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature, Phi(T) falls rapidly toward the three dimensional transition temperature. The theoretical curves are compared to c-axis superfluid density data by H. Kitano et al., (J. Low Temp. Phys. 117, 1241 (1999)) and to the -transverse nodal velocity- measured by angular resolved photoemmission spectra on BSCCO samples by W.S. Lee et al., (Nature 450, 81 (2007)), and by A. To investigate Majorana fermionic excitations of a $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor, the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation is solved on a sphere for two cases: (i) a vortex-antivortex pair at opposite poles and (ii) an edge near the south pole and an antivortex at the north pole. The vortex cores support a state of two Majorana fermions, the energy of which decreases exponentially with the radius of the sphere, independently of a moderate disorder potential. The tunneling conductance of an electron into the superconductor near the position of a vortex is computed for finite temperature, and is compared to the case of an {\it s}-wave superconductor. The zero bias conductance peak of the antivortex is half that of the vortex. This effect can be used as a probe of the order parameter symmetry, and as a direct measurement of the Majorana fermion., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures

A strong periodic potential generally enhances the short wavelength fluctuations of a superfluid beyond the validity of standard continuum approaches. Here we report some recent results on hard core bosons on finite lattices. We find several interesting effects of the periodic potential on the ground state, vortex dynamics, and and Hall conductivity. For example, the Magnus field on a vortex abruptly reverses direction at half filling. A rotating Bose condensate on an optical lattice may allow an experimental test of our results. Directly observing a zero energy Majorana state in the vortex core of a chiral superconductor by tunneling spectroscopy requires energy resolution better than the spacing between core states $\Delta^2/eF$. We show that nevertheless, its existence can be decisively tested by comparing the temperature broadened tunneling conductance of a vortex with that of an antivortex even at temperatures $T >> \Delta^2/eF$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

In two dimensions a vortex lattice can melt by quantum fluctuations into a non-superfluid Quantum Vortex Liquid (QVL). To determine the melting conditions, we compute the bare vortex hopping rate by exact diagonalization of square clusters near half filling. Mapping our effective Hamiltonian to the Boson Coloumb Liquid simulated in Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 826 (1994), we expect a QVL above a melting density of 0.0065 vortices per lattice site. We also compute the Hall conductivity using adiabatic curvatures. As a function of boson filling it reverses sign at half filling in a sharp transition accompanied by a vanishing temperature scale. At half filling, each vortex carries a spin half quantum number (`v-spin'), as a consequence of local non commuting SU(2) symmetries. Implications of these results could be realized in cold atoms, Josephson junction arrays and cuprate superconductors.

These lectures review the large N Schwinger Bosons Mean Field approach to the quantum Heisenberg model. The method applies to ordered and disordered phases in all dimensions, at zero and at finite temperature. Extension to frustrated models is explained. This paper has been withdrawn and replaced by a new version entitled "Vortex quantum dynamics of two dimensional lattice bosons" By Netanel H. Lindner, Assa Auerbach, Daniel P. Arovas, posted in arXiv:0810.2604. The calculations and results of the original manuscript were correct, and lead to several important conclusions about vortex dynamics and Hall conductance. However, we have dropped our conjecture, that vortices exhibit mutual Fermi statistics. The conjecture was based on the antisymmetry under exchange of two vortices, as revealed in the lowest eight many-body eigenstates of 16 sites toroidal lattices. Appealing to an effective Harper bosons model on larger lattices, revealed vortex eigenstates with both Bose and Fermi permutation symmetries, although vortices do carry spin half quantum numbers. It may exemplify that a general non-relativistic "spin-statistics theorem" in two dimensions does not hold.

Two dimensional electrons in weakly disordered high Landau levels are considered. The current-field response in the presence of a strong microwave field, is computed. The disordered Floquet evolution operator allows us to treat the short range disorder perturbatively, at any strength of electric fields. A simplifying Random Matrix Approximation reproduces the broadened Landau levels density of states and structure factor. We derive the magnitude of the Microwave Induced Resistivity Oscillations. The disorder short wavelength cut-off determines the non-linear electric fields of the Zero Resistance State and the Hall Induced Resistivity Oscillations. We present extensive magnetic measurements of the (Ca_xLa_{1-x})(Ba_{1.75-x}La_{0.25+x})Cu_{3}O_{y} (CLBLCO) system with its four different families (x) having a Tc^max(x) variation of 28% and minimal structural changes. For each family we measured the Neel temperature, the anisotropies of the magnetic interactions, and the spin glass temperature. Our results exhibit a universal relation Tc=c*J*n_s for all families, where c~1, J is the in plane Heisenberg exchange, and n_s is the carrier density. This relates cuprate superconductivity to magnetism in the same sense that phonon mediated superconductivity is related to atomic mass., Comment: With an additional inset in Fig.4

A review of the Contractor Renormalization (CORE) method, as a systematic derivation of the low energy effective hamiltonian, is given, with emphasis on its differences and advantages over traditional perturbative (weak/strong links) real space RG. For the low energy physics of the 2D Hubbard model, we derive the plaquette bosons (projected SO(5)) model which connects the microscopic model to phases and phenomenology of high-Tc cuprates. It has been proposed that the microwave-induced ``zero-resistance'' phenomenon, observed in a GaAs two-dimensional electron system at low temperatures in moderate magnetic fields, results from a state with multiple domains, in which a large local electric field $\bE(\br)$ is oriented in different directions. We explore here the questions of what may determine the domain arrangement in a given sample, what do the domains look like in representative cases, and what may be the consequences of domain-wall localization on the macroscopic dc conductance. The tunneling rate t_v of a vortex between two pinning sites (of strength V separated by d) is computed using the Bogoliubov expansion of vortex wavefunctions overlap. For BCS vortices, tunneling is suppressed beyond a few Fermi wavelengths. For Bose condensates, t_v = V exp(- pi n_s d^2/2), where n_s is the boson density. The analogy between vortex hopping in a superconducting film and 2D electrons in a perpendicular magnetic field is exploited. We derive the variable range hopping temperature, below which vortex tunneling contributes to magneto-resistance. Using the 'Quantum Hall Insulator' analogy we argue that the -Hall conductivity- (rather than the inverse Hall resistivity) measures the effective carrier density in domains of mobile vortices. We consider effects of a long-wavelength disorder potential on the Zero Conductance State (ZCS) of the microwave-irradiated 2D electron gas. Assuming a uniform Hall conductivity, we construct a Lyapunov functional and derive stability conditions on the domain structure of the photo-generated fields. We solve the resulting equations for a general one-dimensional and certain two-dimensional disorder potentials, and find non-zero conductances, photo-voltages, and circulating dissipative currents. In contrast, weak white noise disorder does not destroy the ZCS, but induces mesoscopic current fluctuations., Comment: 4 pages, 2 colour figures

The spin half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice, is mapped by Contractor Renormalization to a Spin-Pseudospin Hamiltonian on the triangular superlattice. Variationally, we find a ground state with columnar dimer order. Dimer orientation fluctuations are described by an effective O(2) model at energies above an exponentially suppressed clock mass scale. Our results explain the large density of low energy singlets observed numerically, and the non magnetic T-squared specific heat observed experimentally., Comment: 5 pages

Thermodynamic and transport properties of a two dimensional circular quantum dot are studied theoretically at zero magnetic field. In the limit of a large confining potential, where the dot spectrum exhibits a shell structure, it is argued that both spectral and transport properties should exhibit Luttinger liquid behavior. These predictions are verified by direct numerical diagonalization. The experimental implications of such Luttinger liquid characteristics are discussed.

The highly frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on Checkerboard and Pyrochlore lattices is subject to strong quantum fluctuations. This problem is amenable to the Contractor Renormalization (CORE) algorithm, which systematically computes the effective interactions in a basis of local cluster eigenstates. CORE was recently used to derive the Plaquette Boson-Fermion model for the square lattice Hubbard model (cond-mat/0108087). For the spin half Checkerboard and Pyrochlore cases, we find singlet ground states which break lattice symmetry, and a gap to spin one excitations. The low excitations are singlets, coupled by Ising like interactions at an emergent low energy scale, which for the Pyrochlore is about 1% of the Heisenberg exchange. We discuss low temperature thermodynamics and new interpretations of finite size numerical data. We follow up on a recent suggestion by C. Orzel et. al., Science, 291, 2386 (2001), whereby bosons in an optical lattice would be subjected to a sudden parameter change from the Mott to the superfluid phase. We analyze the Bose Hubbard model with a modified coherent states path integral which can escribe - both - phases. The saddle point theory yields collective oscillations of the uniform superfluid order parameter. These would be seen in time resolved interference patterns made by the released gas. We calculate the collective oscillation's damping rate by phason pair emission. In two dimensions the overdamped region largely overlaps with the quantum critical region. The strongly interacting Hubbard model on the square lattice is reduced to the low energy Plaquette Boson Fermion Model (PBFM). The four bosons (an antiferromagnon triplet and a d-wave hole pair), and the fermions are defined by the lowest plaquette eigenstates. We apply the Contractor Renormalization method of Morningstar and Weinstein to compute the boson effective interactions. The range-3 truncation error is found to be very small, signaling short hole-pair and magnon coherence lengths. The pair-hopping and magnon interactions are comparable, which explains the rapid destruction of antiferromagnetic order with emergence of superconductivity, and validates a key assumption of the projected SO(5) theory. A vacuum crossing at larger doping marks a transition into the overdoped regime. With hole fermions occupying small Fermi pockets and Andreev coupled to hole pair bosons, the PBFM yields several testable predictions for photoemmission, tunneling asymmetry and entropy measurements., Comment: 14 eps figures. added discussion on how to calculate correlations using the CORE method, updated references

The projected SO(5) (pSO(5)) Hamiltonian incorporates the quantum spin and superconducting fluctuations of underdoped cuprates in terms of four bosons moving on a coarse grained lattice. A simple mean field approximation can explain some key feautures of the experimental phase diagram: (i) The Mott transition between antiferromagnet and superconductor, (ii) The increase of T_c and superfluid stiffness with hole concentration x and (iii) The increase of antiferromagnetic resonance energy as sqrt{x-x_c} in the superconducting phase. We apply this theory to explain the ``two gaps'' problem found in underdoped cuprate Superconductor-Normal- Superconductor junctions. In particular we explain the sharp subgap Andreev peaks of the differential resistance, as signatures of the antiferromagnetic resonance (the magnon mass gap). A critical test of this theory is proposed. The tunneling charge, as measured by shot noise, should change by increments of Delta Q= 2e at the Andreev peaks, rather than by Delta Q=e as in conventional superconductors., Comment: 3 EPS figures

The projected SO(5) theory (pSO(5)) is used to resolve the puzzle of two distinct energy gaps in high T$_c$ Superconductor-Normal-Superconductor junctions. Counter to conventional theory of multiple Andreev reflections (MAR), the differential resistance peaks are associated with the antiferromagnetic resonance observed in neutron scattering, and not with Cooper pair breaking. The pSO(5) and MAR theories differ by the expected tunneling charges at the peaks. A comprehensive study of doped RVB states is performed. It reveals a fundamental connection between superconductivity and quantum spin fluctuations in underdoped cuprates : {\em Cooper pair hopping} strongly reduces the local magnetization $m_0$. This effect pertains to recent muon spin rotation measurements in which $m_0$ varies weakly with hole doping in the poorly conducting regime, but drops precipitously above the onset of superconductivity. Gutzwiller mean field Approximation (GA) is found to agree with numerical Monte Carlo calculation. GA shows for example that for a bond amplitude $u(r)=e^{-r/\xi}$, spin spin correlations decay exponentially with a correlation length $\propto e^{3\pi \xi^2/2}$. We study a geometry-dependent effect of long-range Coulomb interactions on quantum Hall (QH) tunneling junctions. In an X-shaped geometry, duality relates junctions with opening angles alpha and (pi - alpha). We prove that duality between weak tunneling and weak backscattering survives in the presence of long range interactions, and that their effects are precisely cancelled in the self dual geometry alpha=pi/2. Tunneling exponents as a function of alpha, the interaction strength chi, and the filling fraction nu are calculated. We find that Coulomb interaction induces localization in narrow channels (large alpha), and delocalization for sharply pinched constrictions (small alpha). Consequently, an insulator to metal transition happens at an angle alpha_c(chi,nu) <=pi/2. We construct a class of projected SO(5) models where the Gutzwiller constraint of no-double-occupancy is implemented exactly. We introduce the concept of projected SO(5) symmetry where all static correlation functions are exactly SO(5) symmetric and discuss the signature of the projected SO(5) symmetry in dynamical correlation functions. We show that this class of projected SO(5) models can give a realistic description of the global phase diagram of the high T_c superconductors and account for many of their physical properties.

The longstanding problem of the Hall resistivity rho(x,y) in the Hall insulator phase is addressed using four-lead Chalker-Coddington networks. Electron interaction effects are introduced via a finite dephasing length. In the quantum coherent regime, we find that rho(x,y) scales with the longitudinal resistivity rho(x,x), and they both diverge exponentially with dephasing length. In the Ohmic limit, (dephasing length shorter than Hall puddles' size), rho(x,y) remains quantized and independent of rho(x,x). An analogy between the twisted quantum xxz model and a gated Josephson junction array is used to predict sharp structure in the critical currents versus gate voltage, and fractional AC Josephson frequencies. We prove selection rules for level crossings which imply fractional periodicities of ground states with varying Aharonov-Bohm flux. Extrapolated numerical diagonalization on ladders, find a Haldane gap at moderate easy-plane anisotropy, with vanishing superfluid stiffness.
