Search

In two recent papers by Pore et al. and Khuyagbaatar et al. discovery of the new isotope Md-244 was reported. The decay data, however, are conflicting. While Pore et al. report two isomeric states decaying by alpha emission with E(1)=8.66(2) MeV, T_1/2=0.4+0.4/-0.1s and E(2)=8.31(2) MeV, T_1/2 approx 6 s, Khuyagbaatar et al. report only a single transition with a broad energy distribution of E=(8.73-8.86) MeV and T_1/2=0.30/-0.09 s. The data published by Pore et al. very similar to those published for Md-245 (E=8.64(2), 8.68(2) MeV T_1/2=0.35+0.23/-0.16}$ s ). Therefore, we compare the data presented for Md-244 by Pore et al. with those reported for Md-245 by Ninov et al. and also by Khuyagbaatar et al.. We conclude that the data presented by Pore et al. shall be attributed to Md-245 with small contributions (one event each) from Fm-245 and probably Md-246.

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have shown promise as inherently localized electric-field sensors, capable of detecting individual charges with nanometer resolution. Working with NV ensembles, we demonstrate that a detailed understanding of the internal electric field environment enables enhanced sensitivity in the detection of external electric fields. We follow this logic along two complementary paths. First, using excitation tuned near the NV's zero-phonon line, we perform optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures in order to precisely measure the NV center's excited-state susceptibility to electric fields. In doing so, we demonstrate that the characteristically observed contrast inversion arises from an interplay between spin-selective optical pumping and the NV centers' local charge distribution. Second, motivated by this understanding, we propose and analyze a novel scheme for optically-enhanced electric-field sensing using NV ensembles; we estimate that our approach should enable order of magnitude improvements in the DC electric-field sensitivity., Comment: 6+10 pages, 3+6 figures

Machine learning techniques have led to broad adoption of a statistical model of computing. The statistical distributions natively available on quantum processors are a superset of those available classically. Harnessing this attribute has the potential to accelerate or otherwise improve machine learning relative to purely classical performance. A key challenge toward that goal is learning to hybridize classical computing resources and traditional learning techniques with the emerging capabilities of general purpose quantum processors. Here, we demonstrate such hybridization by training a 19-qubit gate model processor to solve a clustering problem, a foundational challenge in unsupervised learning. We use the quantum approximate optimization algorithm in conjunction with a gradient-free Bayesian optimization to train the quantum machine. This quantum/classical hybrid algorithm shows robustness to realistic noise, and we find evidence that classical optimization can be used to train around both coherent and incoherent imperfections., Comment: 7 pages + appendix, many figures

We describe and implement a family of entangling gates activated by radio-frequency flux modulation applied to a tunable transmon that is statically coupled to a neighboring transmon. The effect of this modulation is the resonant exchange of photons directly between levels of the two-transmon system, obviating the need for mediating qubits or resonator modes and allowing for the full utilization of all qubits in a scalable architecture. The resonance condition is selective in both the frequency and amplitude of modulation and thus alleviates frequency crowding. We demonstrate the use of three such resonances to produce entangling gates that enable universal quantum computation: one iSWAP gate and two distinct controlled Z gates. We report interleaved randomized benchmarking results indicating gate error rates of 6% for the iSWAP (duration 135ns) and 9% for the controlled Z gates (durations 175 ns and 270 ns), limited largely by qubit coherence., Comment: As submitted. 7 pages, 6 figures

We show that parametric coupling techniques can be used to generate selective entangling interactions for multi-qubit processors. By inducing coherent population exchange between adjacent qubits under frequency modulation, we implement a universal gateset for a linear array of four superconducting qubits. An average process fidelity of $\mathcal{F}=93\%$ is estimated for three two-qubit gates via quantum process tomography. We establish the suitability of these techniques for computation by preparing a four-qubit maximally entangled state and comparing the estimated state fidelity against the expected performance of the individual entangling gates. In addition, we prepare an eight-qubit register in all possible bitstring permutations and monitor the fidelity of a two-qubit gate across one pair of these qubits. Across all such permutations, an average fidelity of $\mathcal{F}=91.6\pm2.6\%$ is observed. These results thus offer a path to a scalable architecture with high selectivity and low crosstalk.

Masses of $^{52}$Co, $^{52}$Co$^m$, $^{52}$Fe, $^{52}$Fe$^m$, and $^{52}$Mn have been measured with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap mass spectrometer. Of these, $^{52}$Co and $^{52}$Co$^m$ have been experimentally determined for the first time and found to be more bound than predicted by extrapolations. The isobaric multiplet mass equation for the $T=2$ quintet at $A=52$ has been studied employing the new mass values. No significant breakdown (beyond the $3\sigma$ level) of the quadratic form of the IMME was observed ($\chi^2/n=2.4$). The cubic coefficient was 6.0(32) keV ($\chi^2/n=1.1$). The excitation energies for the isomer and the $T=2$ isobaric analogue state in $^{52}$Co have been determined to be 374(13) keV and 2922(13) keV, respectively. The $Q$ value for the proton decay from the $19/2^-$ isomer in $^{53}$Co has been determined with an unprecedented precision, $Q_{p} = 1558.8(17)$ keV. The proton separation energies of $^{52}$Co and $^{53}$Ni relevant for the astrophysical rapid proton capture process have been experimentally determined for the first time. \end{abstract}, Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys. For the first time a direct determination of the atomic mass difference of 187Re and 187Os has been performed with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP applying the novel phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance technique. The obtained value of 2492(30stat)(15sys) eV is in excellent agreement with the Q values determined indirectly with microcalorimetry and thus resolves a long-standing discrepancy with older proportional counter measurements. This is essential for the determination of the neutrino mass from the beta-decay of 187Re as planned in future microcalorimetric measurements. In addition, an accurate mass difference of 187Re and 187Os is also important for the assessment of 187Re for cosmochronology., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The atomic mass difference of 163Ho and 163Dy has been directly measured with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP applying the novel phase imaging ion cyclotron resonance technique. Our measurement has solved the long standing problem of large discrepancies in the Q value of the electron capture in 163Ho determined by different techniques. Our measured mass difference shifts the current Q value of 2555(16) eV evaluated in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012 [G. Audi et al., Chin. Phys. C 36, 1157 (2012)] by more than 7 sigma to 2833(30stat)(15sys) eV/c2. With the new mass difference it will be possible, e.g., to reach in the first phase of the ECHo experiment a statistical sensitivity to the neutrino mass below 10 eV, which will reduce its present upper limit by more than an order of magnitude., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

An open-ring ion trap, also referred to as transparent trap was initially built up to perform $\beta$-$\nu$ correlation experiments with radioactive ions. This trap geometry is also well suited to perform experiments with laser-cooled ions, serving for the development of a new type of Penning trap, in the framework of the project TRAPSENSOR at the University of Granada. The goal of this project is to use a single $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion as detector for single-ion mass spectrometry. Within this project and without any modification to the initial electrode configuration, it was possible to perform Doppler cooling on $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions, starting from large clouds and reaching single ion sensitivity. This new feature of the trap might be important also for other experiments with ions produced at Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facilities. Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-48 + Am-243 were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum f\"ur Schwerionenforschung. Amongst the detected thirty correlated alpha-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-alpha-fission and five recoil-alpha-alpha-fission events were observed. The latter are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator. Contrary to their interpretation, we propose an alternative view, namely to assign eight of these eleven decay chains of recoil-alpha(-alpha)-fission type to start from the 3n-evaporation channel 115-288. Quantum-mechanical shell effects are expected to strongly enhance nuclear binding on an "island of stability" of superheavy elements. The predicted center at proton number $Z=114,120$, or $126$ and neutron number $N=184$ has been substantiated by the recent synthesis of new elements up to $Z=118$. However the location of the center and the extension of the island of stability remain vague. High-precision mass spectrometry allows the direct measurement of nuclear binding energies and thus the determination of the strength of shell effects. Recent data from the LHC makes it possible to examine an old speculation that at very high energy the total multiplicity and the cross section in elementary particle interactions vary in parallel with energy. Using fits incorporating the new data, it appears that the ratios of the total, elastic, and inelastic cross sections to the average multiplicity N can in fact approach constants at very high energy. The approach to the limit is however quite slow for the total and inelastic cross sections and is not yet reached at LHC energies. Os-184 has been excluded as a promising candidate for the search of neutrinoless double-electron capture. High-precision mass measurements with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer TRIGA-TRAP resulted in a marginal resonant enhancement with = -8.89(58) keV excess energy to the 1322.152(22) keV 0+ excited state in W-184. State-of-the-art energy density functional calculations are applied for the evaluation of the nuclear matrix elements to the excited states predicting a strong suppression due to the large deformation of mother and daughter states. The half-life of the transition in Os-184 exceeds T_{1/2} > 1.3 10^{29} years for an effective neutrino mass of 1 eV., Comment: accepted in Phys. Rev. C

The Q-value of the double-electron capture in Cd-108 has been determined to be (272.04 +/- 0.55) keV in a direct measurement with the double-Penning trap mass spectrometer TRIGA-TRAP. Based on this result a resonant enhancement of the decay rate of Cd-108 is excluded. We have confirmed the double-beta transition Q-values of Cd-106 and Pd-110 recently measured with the Penning-trap mass spectrometers SHIPTRAP and ISOLTRAP, respectively. Furthermore, the atomic masses of the involved nuclides Cd-106, Cd-108, Cd-110, Pd-106, Pd-108 and Pd-110 have been directly linked to the atomic mass standard., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The mass difference of the nuclides 180W and 180Hf has been measured with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP to investigate 180W as a possible candidate for the search for neutrinoless doubleelectron capture. The Q-value was measured to 143.20(27)keV. This value in combination with the calculations of the atomic electron wave functions and other parameters results in a half-life of the 0+ \rightarrow 0+ ground-state to ground-state double-electron capture transition of approximately 5\cdot10E27 years/^2.

At $\sqrt s = 57\pm 7$ TeV, the Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) collaboration has recently measured the proton-air inelastic production cross section $\sigma_{\rm p-air}$. Assuming a helium contamination of 25%, they subtracted 30 mb from their measured value, resulting in a p-air inelastic production cross section, $\sigma_{\rm p-air}=475 \pm 22\ ({\rm stat.})\pm^{20}_{15} \ ({\rm syst.})$ mb, exclusive of helium contamination. Using this result in a Glauber calculation to obtain the $pp$ inelastic cross section, they found the inelastic $pp$ cross section $\sigma_{\rm inel}= 90\pm 7\ ({\rm stat.}) \pm^9_{11} ({\rm syst.}) \pm 1.5 {\rm \ (Glaub.})$ mb. Parameterization of the $\bar pp$ and $pp$ cross sections incorporating analyticity constraints and unitarity has allowed us to make accurate extrapolations to ultra-high energies, and using Glauber calculations, accurately predict cosmic ray results for $\spai$. In this update for 57 TeV, we predict i) a $pp$ total cross section, $\sigma_{\rm tot}=133.4\pm 1.6$ mb, using high energy predictions from a saturated Froissart bound parameterization of accelerator data on forward $\bar pp$ and $pp$ scattering amplitudes and ii) a p-air inelastic production cross section, $\sigma_{\rm p-air}=483\pm 3 $ mb, by using $\sigma_{\rm tot}$ together with Glauber theory, allowing us to determine independently that the helium contamination was 19%, in reasonable agreement with their estimate of 25%. Our predictions agree with all available cosmic ray extensive air shower measurements, both in magnitude and in energy dependence. By using our value for the $pp$ total cross section at 57 TeV, Block and Halzen \cite{blackdisk} have predicted that the $pp$ inelastic cross section is $\sigma_{\rm inel}= 92.9\pm 1.6$ mb, in agreement with the measured POA value., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

The masses of ten proton-rich nuclides, including the N=Z+1 nuclides 85-Mo and 87-Tc, were measured with the Penning trap mass spectrometer SHIPTRAP. Compared to the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2003 a systematic shift of the mass surface by up to 1.6 MeV is observed causing significant abundance changes of the ashes of astrophysical X-ray bursts. Surprisingly low alpha-separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc are found, making the formation of a ZrNb cycle in the rp process possible. Core-collapse supernovae (CC SNe), especially Type II-Plateau ones, are thought to be important contributors to cosmic dust production. SN 2004dj, one of the closest and brightest SN since 1987A, offered a good opportunity to examine dust formation processes. To find signs of newly formed dust, we analyze all available mid-infrared (MIR) archival data from the Spitzer Space Telescope. We re-reduce and analyze data from IRAC, MIPS and IRS instruments obtained between +98 and +1381 days after explosion, generating light curves and spectra for each epoch. Observed spectral energy distributions are fitted with both analytic and numerical models, using the radiative-transfer code MOCASSIN for the latter ones. We also use imaging polarimetric data obtained at +425 days by the Hubble Space Telescope. We present convincing evidence of dust formation in the ejecta of SN 2004dj from MIR light curves and spectra. Significant MIR excess flux is detected in all bands between 3.6 and 24 um. In the optical, a ~0.8% polarization is also detected at a 2-sigma level, which exceeds the interstellar polarization in that direction. Our analysis shows that the freshly-formed dust around SN 2004dj can be modeled assuming a nearly spherical shell containing amorphous carbon grains, cooling from ~700 K to ~400 K between +267 and +1246 days. Persistent excess flux has been found above 10 um, which is explained by a cold (~115 K) dust component. If this cold dust is of circumstellar origin, it is likely to be condensed in a cool, dense shell between the forward and reverse shocks. Pre-existing circumstellar dust is less likely, but cannot be ruled out. Using infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we perform the first inventory of aromatic feature emission (AFE, but also commonly referred to as PAH emission) for a statistically complete sample of star-forming galaxies in the local volume. The photometric methodology involved is calibrated and demonstrated to recover the aromatic fraction of the IRAC 8 micron flux with a standard deviation of 6% for a training set of 40 SINGS galaxies (ranging from stellar to dust dominated) with both suitable mid-infrared Spitzer IRS spectra and equivalent photometry. A potential factor of two improvement could be realized with suitable 5.5 and 10 micron photometry, such as what may be provided in the future by JWST. The resulting technique is then applied to mid-infrared photometry for the 258 galaxies from the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) survey, a large sample dominated in number by low-luminosity dwarf galaxies for which obtaining comparable mid-infrared spectroscopy is not feasible. We find the total LVL luminosity due to five strong aromatic features in the 8 micron complex to be 2.47E10 solar luminosities with a mean volume density of 8.8E6 solar luminosities per cubic Megaparsec. Twenty-four of the LVL galaxies, corresponding to a luminosity cut at M = -18.22 in the B band, account for 90% of the aromatic luminosity. Using oxygen abundances compiled from the literature for 129 of the 258 LVL galaxies, we find a correlation between metallicity and the aromatic to total infrared emission ratio but not the aromatic to total 8 micron dust emission ratio. A possible explanation is that metallicity plays a role in the abundance of aromatic molecules relative to the total dust content, but other factors such as star formation and/or the local radiation field affect the excitation of those molecules., Comment: ApJ in press; 29 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables; emulateapj format

We present a catalog of 5324 massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), with accurate spectral types compiled from the literature, and a photometric catalog for a subset of 3654 of these stars, with the goal of exploring their infrared properties. The photometric catalog consists of stars with infrared counterparts in the Spitzer, SAGE-SMC survey database, for which we present uniform photometry from 0.3-24 um in the UBVIJHKs+IRAC+MIPS24 bands. We compare the color magnitude diagrams and color-color diagrams to those of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), finding that the brightest infrared sources in the SMC are also the red supergiants, supergiant B[e] (sgB[e]) stars, luminous blue variables, and Wolf-Rayet stars, with the latter exhibiting less infrared excess, the red supergiants being less dusty and the sgB[e] stars being on average less luminous. Among the objects detected at 24 um are a few very luminous hypergiants, 4 B-type stars with peculiar, flat spectral energy distributions, and all 3 known luminous blue variables. We detect a distinct Be star sequence, displaced to the red, and suggest a novel method of confirming Be star candidates photometrically. We find a higher fraction of Oe and Be stars among O and early-B stars in the SMC, respectively, when compared to the LMC, and that the SMC Be stars occur at higher luminosities. We estimate mass-loss rates for the red supergiants, confirming the correlation with luminosity even at the metallicity of the SMC. Finally, we confirm the new class of stars displaying composite A & F type spectra, the sgB[e] nature of 2dFS1804 and find the F0 supergiant 2dFS3528 to be a candidate luminous blue variable with cold dust., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

(Abridged) Spitzer data at 24, 70, and 160 micron and ground-based H-alpha images are analyzed for a sample of 189 nearby star-forming and starburst galaxies to investigate whether reliable star formation rate (SFR) indicators can be defined using the monochromatic infrared dust emission centered at 70 and 160 micron. We compare recently published recipes for SFR measures using combinations of the 24 micron and observed H-alpha luminosities with those using 24 micron luminosity alone. From these comparisons, we derive a reference SFR indicator for use in our analysis. Linear correlations between SFR and the 70 and 160 micron luminosity are found for L(70)>=1.4x10^{42} erg/s and L(160)>=2x10^{42} erg/s, corresponding to SFR>=0.1-0.3 M_sun/yr. Below those two luminosity limits, the relation between SFR and 70 micron (160 micron) luminosity is non-linear and SFR calibrations become problematic. The dispersion of the data around the mean trend increases for increasing wavelength, becoming about 25% (factor ~2) larger at 70 (160) micron than at 24 micron. The increasing dispersion is likely an effect of the increasing contribution to the infrared emission of dust heated by stellar populations not associated with the current star formation. The non-linear relation between SFR and the 70 and 160 micron emission at faint galaxy luminosities suggests that the increasing transparency of the interstellar medium, decreasing effective dust temperature, and decreasing filling factor of star forming regions across the galaxy become important factors for decreasing luminosity. The SFR calibrations are provided for galaxies with oxygen abundance 12+Log(O/H)>8.1. Using Spitzer IRAC observations from the SAGE-SMC Legacy program and archived Spitzer IRAC data, we investigate dust production in 47 Tuc, a nearby massive Galactic globular cluster. A previous study detected infrared excess, indicative of circumstellar dust, in a large population of stars in 47 Tuc, spanning the entire Red Giant Branch (RGB). We show that those results suffered from effects caused by stellar blending and imaging artifacts and that it is likely that no stars below about 1 mag from the tip of the RGB are producing dust. The only stars that appear to harbor dust are variable stars, which are also the coolest and most luminous stars in the cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

The survey description and the near-, mid-, and far-infrared flux properties are presented for the 258 galaxies in the Local Volume Legacy (LVL). LVL is a Spitzer Space Telescope legacy program that surveys the local universe out to 11 Mpc, built upon a foundation of ultraviolet, H-alpha, and HST imaging from 11HUGS (11 Mpc H-alpha and Ultraviolet Galaxy Survey) and ANGST (ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury). LVL covers an unbiased, representative, and statistically robust sample of nearby star-forming galaxies, exploiting the highest extragalactic spatial resolution achievable with Spitzer. As a result of its approximately volume-limited nature, LVL augments previous Spitzer observations of present-day galaxies with improved sampling of the low-luminosity galaxy population. The collection of LVL galaxies shows a large spread in mid-infrared colors, likely due to the conspicuous deficiency of 8um PAH emission from low-metallicity, low-luminosity galaxies. Conversely, the far-infrared emission tightly tracks the total infrared emission, with a dispersion in their flux ratio of only 0.1 dex. In terms of the relation between infrared-to-ultraviolet ratio and ultraviolet spectral slope, the LVL sample shows redder colors and/or lower infrared-to-ultraviolet ratios than starburst galaxies, suggesting that reprocessing by dust is less important in the lower mass systems that dominate the LVL sample. A commercial, position-sensitive ion detector was used for the first time for the time-of-flight ion-cyclotron resonance detection technique in Penning trap mass spectrometry. In this work, the characteristics of the detector and its implementation in a Penning trap mass spectrometer will be presented. In addition, simulations and experimental studies concerning the observation of ions ejected from a Penning trap are described. This will allow for a precise monitoring of the state of ion motion in the trap., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

(abridged) We study photoelectric heating throughout the Large Magellanic Cloud. We quantify the importance of the [CII] cooling line and the photoelectric heating process of various environments in the LMC and investigate which parameters control the extent of photoelectric heating. We use the BICE [CII] map and the Spitzer/SAGE infrared maps. We examine the spatial variations in the efficiency of photoelectric heating: photoelectric heating rate over power absorbed by grains. We correlate the photoelectric heating efficiency and the emission from various dust constituents and study the variations as a function of H\alpha emission, dust temperatures, and the total infrared luminosity. From this we estimate radiation field, gas temperature, and electron density. We find systematic variations in photoelectric efficiency. The highest efficiencies are found in the diffuse medium, while the lowest coincide with bright star-forming regions (~1.4 times lower). The [CII] line emission constitutes 1.32% of the far infrared luminosity across the whole of the LMC. We find correlations between the [CII] emission and ratios of the mid infrared and far infrared bands, which comprise various dust constituents. The correlations are interpreted in light of the spatial variations of the dust abundance and by the local environmental conditions that affect the dust emission properties. As a function of the total infrared surface brightness, S_{TIR}, the [CII] surface brightness can be described as: S_{[CII]}=1.25 S_{TIR}^{0.69} [10^{-3} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} sr^{-1}]. The [CII] emission is well-correlation with the 8 micrometer emission, suggesting that the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons play a dominant role in the photoelectric heating process., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 16 pages, 17 figures

The Tail region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was imaged using the MIPS instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope as part of the SAGE-SMC Spitzer Legacy. Diffuse infrared emission from dust was detected in all the MIPS bands. The Tail gas-to-dust ratio was measured to be 1200 +/- 350 using the MIPS observations combined with existing IRAS and HI observations. This gas-to-dust ratio is higher than the expected 500-800 from the known Tail metallicity indicating possible destruction of dust grains. Two cluster regions in the Tail were resolved into multiple sources in the MIPS observations and local gas-to-dust ratios were measured to be ~440 and ~250 suggests dust formation and/or significant amounts of ionized gas in these regions. We present a 1.5deg x 8deg (220pc x 1195pc) Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer 24um image of the Galactic Center and an accompanying point source list. This image is the highest spatial resolution (6" ~ 0.25pc) and sensitivity map ever taken across the GC at this wavelength, showing the emission by warm dust in unprecedented detail. We present initial results and source lists of variable sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) for which we detect thermal infrared variability from the SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) survey, which had 2 epochs of photometry separated by three months. The SAGE survey mapped a 7 degree by 7 degree region of the LMC using the IRAC and the MIPS instruments on board Spitzer. Variable sources are identified using a combination of the IRAC 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 \micron bands and the MIPS 24 \micron bands. An error-weighted flux difference between the two epochs is used to assess the variability. Of the ~ 3 million sources detected at both epochs we find ~ 2,000 variable sources for which we provide electronic catalogs. Most of the variable sources can be classified as asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. A large fraction (> 66%) of the extreme AGB stars are variable and only smaller fractions of carbon-rich (6.1%) and oxygen-rich (2.0%) stars are detected as variable. The masses of very neutron-deficient nuclides close to the astrophysical rp- and nu p-process paths have been determined with the Penning trap facilities JYFLTRAP at JYFL/Jyv\"askyl\"a and SHIPTRAP at GSI/Darmstadt. Isotopes from yttrium (Z = 39) to palladium (Z = 46) have been produced in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions. In total 21 nuclides were studied and almost half of the mass values were experimentally determined for the first time: 88Tc, 90-92Ru, 92-94Rh, and 94,95Pd. For the 95Pdm, (21/2^+) high-spin state, a first direct mass determination was performed. Relative mass uncertainties of typically $\delta m / m = 5 \times 10^{-8}$ were obtained. The impact of the new mass values has been studied in nu p-process nucleosynthesis calculations. The research reactor TRIGA Mainz is an ideal facility to provide neutron-rich nuclides with production rates sufficiently large for mass spectrometric and laser spectroscopic studies. Within the TRIGA-SPEC project, a Penning trap as well as a beam line for collinear laser spectroscopy are being installed. Several new developments will ensure high sensitivity of the trap setup enabling mass measurements even on a single ion. Besides neutron-rich fission products produced in the reactor, also heavy nuclides such as 235-U or 252-Cf can be investigated for the first time with an off-line ion source. The data provided by the mass measurements will be of interest for astrophysical calculations on the rapid neutron-capture process as well as for tests of mass models in the heavy-mass region. The laser spectroscopic measurements will yield model-independent information on nuclear ground-state properties such as nuclear moments and charge radii of neutron-rich nuclei of refractory elements far from stability. We present IRAC and MIPS images and photometry of a sample of previously known planetary nebulae (PNe) from the SAGE survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Of the 233 known PNe in the survey field, 185 objects were detected in at least two of the IRAC bands, and 161 detected in the MIPS 24 micron images. Color-color and color-magnitude diagrams are presented using several combinations of IRAC, MIPS, and 2MASS magnitudes. The location of an individual PN in the color-color diagrams is seen to depend on the relative contributions of the spectral components which include molecular hydrogen, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), infrared forbidden line emission from the ionized gas, warm dust continuum, and emission directly from the central star. The sample of LMC PNe is compared to a number of Galactic PNe and found to not significantly differ in their position in color-color space. We also explore the potential value of IR PNe luminosity functions (LFs) in the LMC. IRAC LFs appear to follow the same functional form as the well-established [O III] LFs although there are several PNe with observed IR magnitudes brighter than the cut-offs in these LFs., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, to be published in the Astronomical Journal. We predict $\sigma_{p{-}\rm air}^{\rm prod}$, the proton--air inelastic production cross section, at $pp$ center-of-mass energies $2\le\sqrt s \le 100000$ TeV, using high energy predictions from a saturated Froissart bound parameterization of accelerator data on forward $\bar pp$ and $pp$ scattering amplitudes, together with Glauber theory. The parameterization of the $\bar pp$ and $pp$ cross sections incorporates analyticity constraints and unitarity, allowing accurate extrapolations to ultra-high energies. Our predictions are in excellent agreement with cosmic ray extensive air shower measurements, both in magnitude and in energy dependence, Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, manuscript in .TEX

We obtain a good analytic fit to the joint Bjorken-x and Q^2 dependences of ZEUS data on the deep inelastic structure function F_2(x, Q^2). At fixed virtuality Q^2, as we showed previously, our expression is an expansion in powers of log (1/x) that satisfies the Froissart bound. Here we show that for each x, the Q^2 dependence of the data is well described by an expansion in powers of log Q^2. The resulting analytic expression allows us to predict the logarithmic derivatives {({\partial}^n F_2^p/{{(\partial\ln Q^2}})^n)}_x for n = 1,2 and to compare the results successfully with other data. We extrapolate the proton structure function F_2^p(x,Q^2) to the very large Q^2 and the very small x regions that are inaccessible to present day experiments and contrast our expectations with those of conventional global fits of parton distribution functions., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, a few changes in the text. First on-line mass measurements were performed at the SHIPTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer. The masses of 18 neutron-deficient isotopes in the terbium-to-thulium region produced in fusion-evaporation reactions were determined with relative uncertainties of about $7\cdot 10^{-8}$, nine of them for the first time. Four nuclides ($^{144, 145}$Ho and $^{147, 148}$Tm) were found to be proton-unbound. The implication of the results on the location of the proton drip-line is discussed by analyzing the one-proton separation energies.

We propose a new method to control the roughness of a growing surface, via a time-delayed feedback scheme. As an illustration, we apply this method to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in 1+1 dimensions and show that the effective growth exponent of the surface width can be stabilized at any desired value in the interval [0.25,0.33], for a significant length of time. The method is quite general and can be applied to a wide range of growth phenomena. A possible experimental realization is suggested., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We fit the reduced cross section for deep-inelastic electron scattering data to a three parameter ln^2 s fit, A + beta ln^2 (s/s_0), where s= [Q^2/x] (1-x) + m^2, and Q^2 is the virtuality of the exchanged photon. Over a wide range in Q^2 (0.11 < Q^2 < 1200 GeV^2) all of the fits satisfy the logarithmic energy dependence of the Froissart bound. We can use these results to extrapolate to very large energies and hence to very small values of Bjorken x -- well beyond the range accessible experimentally. As Q^2 --> infinity, the structure function F_2^p(x, Q^2) exhibits Bjorken scaling, within experimental errors. We obtain new constraints on the behavior of quark and antiquark distribution functions at small x., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

The ultraviolet-to-radio continuum spectral energy distributions are presented for all 75 galaxies in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). A principal component analysis of the sample shows that most of the sample's spectral variations stem from two underlying components, one representative of a galaxy with a low infrared-to-ultraviolet ratio and one representative of a galaxy with a high infrared-to-ultraviolet ratio. The influence of several parameters on the infrared-to-ultraviolet ratio is studied (e.g., optical morphology, disk inclination, far-infrared color, ultraviolet spectral slope, and star formation history). Consistent with our understanding of normal star-forming galaxies, the SINGS sample of galaxies in comparison to more actively star-forming galaxies exhibits a larger dispersion in the infrared-to-ultraviolet versus ultraviolet spectral slope correlation. Early type galaxies, exhibiting low star formation rates and high optical surface brightnesses, have the most discrepant infrared-to-ultraviolet correlation. These results suggest that the star formation history may be the dominant regulator of the broadband spectral variations between galaxies. Finally, a new discovery shows that the 24 micron morphology can be a useful tool for parametrizing the global dust temperature and ultraviolet extinction in nearby galaxies. The dust emission in dwarf/irregular galaxies is clumpy and warm accompanied by low ultraviolet extinction, while in spiral galaxies there is typically a much larger diffuse component of cooler dust and average ultraviolet extinction. Based on a cellular automaton model the growth kinetics and the critical surface dynamics of cell monolayers is systematically studied by variation of the cell migration activity, the size of the proliferation zone and the cell cycle time distribution over wide ranges. The model design avoids lattice artifacts and ensures high performance. The monolayer expansion velocity derived from our simulations can be interpreted as a generalization of the velocity relationship for a traveling front in the Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskounov (FKPP) equation that is frequently used to model tumor growth phenomena by continuum models. The critical surface dynamics corresponds to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class for all parameters and model variations studied. While the velocity agrees quantitatively with experimental observations by Bru et al, the critical surface dynamics is in contrast to their interpretation as generic molecular-beam-epitaxy-like growth.

Landshoff and Donnachie[hep-ph/0509240, (2005)] parametrize the energy behavior of pp and p\bar p scattering cross sections with five parameters, using: \sigma^+=56.08 s^{-0.4525}+21.70s^{0.0808} for pp, \sigma^-=98.39 s^{-0.4525}+21.70s^{0.0808} for p\bar p. Using the 4 analyticity constraints of Block and Halzen[M. M. Block and F. Halzen, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 72}, 036006 (2005)], we simultaneously fit the Landshoff-Donnachie form to the same ``sieved'' set of pp and p\bar p cross section and \rho data that Block and Halzen used for a very good fit to a ln^2 s parametrization. We show that the satisfaction of the analyticity constraints will require complicated modifications of the Landshoff-Donnachie parametrization for lower energies, greatly altering its inherent appeal of simplicity and universality., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

We here comment on a series of recent papers by Igi and Ishida[K. Igi and M. Ishida, Phys. Lett B 622, 286 (2005)] and Block and Halzen[M. M. Block and F. Halzen, Phys. Rev D 72, 036006 (2005)] that fit high energy $pp$ and $\bar pp$ cross section and $\rho$-value data, where $\rho$ is the ratio of the real to the imaginary portion of the forward scattering amplitude. These authors used Finite Energy Sum Rules and analyticity consistency conditions, respectively, to constrain the asymptotic behavior of hadron cross sections by anchoring their high energy asymptotic amplitudes--even under crossing--to low energy experimental data. Using analyticity, we here show that i) the two apparently very different approaches are in fact equivalent, ii) that these analyticity constraints can be extended to give new constraints, and iii) that these constraints can be extended to crossing odd amplitudes. We also apply these extensions to photoproduction. It is well known that high energy data alone do not discriminate between asymptotic $\ln s$ and $\ln^2s$ behavior of $pp$ and $\bar pp$ cross sections. By exploiting high quality low energy data, analyticity resolves this ambiguity in favor of cross sections that grow asymptotically as $\ln^2s$. We here show that two methods for incorporating the low energy data into the high energy fits give numerically identical results and yield essentially identical tightly constrained values for the LHC cross section. Fits to high energy data alone cannot cleanly discriminate between asymptotic $\ln s$ and $\ln^2s$ behavior of total hadronic cross sections. We demonstrate that this is no longer true when we require that these amplitudes also describe, on average, low energy data dominated by resonances., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

It is well known that fits to high energy data cannot discriminate between asymptotic ln(s) and ln^2(s) behavior of total cross section. We show that this is no longer the case when we impose the condition that the amplitudes also describe, on average, low energy data dominated by resonances. We demonstrate this by fitting real analytic amplitudes to high energy measurements of the gamma p total cross section, for sqrt(s) > 4 GeV. We subsequently require that the asymptotic fit smoothly join the sqrt(s) = 2.01 GeV cross section described by Dameshek and Gilman as a sum of Breit-Wigner resonances. The results strongly favor the high energy ln^2(s) fit of the form sigma_{gamma p} = c_0 + c_1 ln(nu/m) + c_2 ln^2(nu/m) + beta_{P'}/sqrt(nu/m), basically excluding a ln(s) fit of the form sigma_{\gamma p} = c_0 + c_1 ln(nu/m) + beta_P'/sqrt(\nu/m), where nu is the laboratory photon energy. This evidence for saturation of the Froissart bound for gamma p interactions is confirmed by applying the same analysis to pi p data using vector meson dominance., Comment: 7 pages, Latex2e, 4 postscript figures, uses epsf.sty

The purpose of this note is to show that the cross section factorization relation $\sigma_{nn}(s)/\sigma_{\gamma p}(s) = \sigma_{\gamma p}(s)/ \sigma_{\gamma\gamma}(s)$ is satisfied experimentally in the energy domain $8\le\sqrt s\le 2000$ GeV, where the $\sigma$'s are total cross sections and $nn$ denotes the even portion of the $pp$ and $\pbar p$ total cross section. A convenient phenomenological paramaterization for a global simultaneous fit to the $pp$, $\pbar p$, $\gamma p$ and $\gamma\gamma$ total cross section data together with the $\rho$-value data for $pp$ and $\pbar p$ is provided by using real analytic amplitudes. Within experimental errors, we show that factorization is satisfied when we unfold the published $\gamma\gamma$ data which had averaged the cross sections obtained by using the two different PHOJET and PYTHIA Monte Carlo results. Our analysis clearly favors the PHOJET results and suggests that the additive quark model, together with vector meson dominance, allows one to compute $\sigma_{\gamma p}(s)$ and $\sigma_{\gamma\gamma}(s)$ from $\sigma_{nn}(s)$ with essentially no free parameters. The universal $\rho$-value predicted by our fit, {\em i.e.,} $\rho_{nn} = \rho_{\gamma p} = \rho_{\gamma\gamma}$, is compared to the $\rho$-value obtained by a QCD-inspired analysis of $\pbar p$ and $pp$ data, including the p-air cross sections from cosmic rays. The $\rho$-values obtained from the two techniques are essentially indistinguishable in the energy region $8\le\sqrt s\le 2000$ GeV, giving us increased confidence in our parameterization of the cross sections needed for the factorization relation., Comment: Latex2e, 13 pages, 7 postscript figures placed with epsfig.sty. The robustness of the factorization theorem for total cross sections, $\sigma_{nn}/\sigma_{\gamma p}=\sigma_{\gamma p}/\sigma_{\gamma\gamma}$, originally proved by Block and Kaidalov\cite{bk} for $nn$ (the even portion of $pp$ and $\pbar p$ scattering), $\gamma p$ and $\gamma\gamma$ scattering, is demonstrated. The forward elastic scattering of light on light, {\em i.e.,} the reaction $\gamma+\gamma \to \gamma+\gamma$ in the forward direction, is analyzed utilizing real analytic amplitudes. We calculate $\rho_{\gamma \gamma}$, the ratio of the real to the imaginary portion of the forward scattering amplitude, by fitting the total $\gamma \gamma$ cross section data in the high energy region $5 GeV \le \sqrt s \le 130 $ GeV, assuming a cross section that rises asymptotically as $\ln^2 s$. We then compare $\rho_{\gamma\gamma}$ to $\rho_{nn}$, the ratio of the even portions of the $pp$ and $\pbar p$ forward scattering amplitudes, as well as to $\rho_{\gamma p}$, the $\rho$ value for Compton scattering. Within errors, we find that the three $\rho$-values in the c.m.s. energy region $5 GeV \le \sqrt s \le 130$ GeV are the same, as predicted by a factorization theorem of Block and Kadailov., Comment: 5 pages, Latex2e, 2 postscript figures, uses epsfig.sty

We analyze forward Compton scattering, using real analytic amplitudes. By fitting the total \gamma p scattering cross section data in the high energy region 5 GeV < \sqrt s < 20 GeV, using a cross section rising as \ln^2 s, we calculate \rho_{\gamma p}, the ratio of the real to the imaginary portion of the the forward Compton scattering amplitude, and compare this to \rho_{nn}, the ratio of the even portions of the pp and p-bar p forward scattering amplitudes. Using an eikonal structure for the scattering amplitude, Block and Kaidalov have derived factorization theorems for nucleon-nucleon, $\gamma p$ and $\gamma\gamma$ scattering at high energies, using only some very general assumptions. We present here an analysis giving experimental confirmation for factorization of cross sections, nuclear slope parameters B and $\rho$-values (ratio of real to imaginary portion of forward scattering amplitudes), showing that: i) the three factorization theorems hold, ii) the additive quark model holds to ~1%, and iii) vector dominance holds to better than ~4%., Comment: Latex2e, 11 pages, 6 postscript figures, uses epsfig.sty. Using an eikonal analysis, we simultaneously fit a QCD-inspired parameterization of all accelerator data on forward proton-proton and antiproton-proton scattering amplitudes, together with cosmic ray data (using Glauber theory), to predict proton-air and proton-proton cross sections at energies near \sqrt s \approx 30 TeV. The p-air cosmic ray measurements greatly reduce the errors in the high energy proton-proton and proton-air cross section predictions--in turn, greatly reducing the errors in the fit parameters. From this analysis, we can then compute the survival probability of rapidity gaps in high energy pbar p and pp collisions, with high accuracy in a quasi model-free environment. Using an additive quark model and vector meson dominance, we note that that the survival probabilities are identical, at the same energy, for gamma p and gamma gamma collisions, as well as for nucleon-nucleon collisions. Significantly, our analysis finds large values for gap survival probabilities, \approx 30% at \sqrt s = 200 GeV, \approx 21% at \sqrt s = 1.8 TeV and \approx %%13% at \sqrt s = 14 TeV., Comment: 9 pages, Latex2e, uses epsfig.sty, 4 postscript figures

Using an eikonal analysis, we examine the validity of the factorization theorem for nucleon-nucleon, gamma p and gamma gamma collisions. As an example, using the additive quark model and meson vector dominance, we directly show that for all energies and values of the eikonal, that the factorization theorem sigma_{nn}/sigma_{gamma p} = sigma_{gamma p}/sigma_{gamma gamma} holds. We can also compute the survival probability of large rapidity gaps in high energy pbar p and pp collisions. We show that the survival probabilities are identical (at the same energy) for gamma p and gamma gamma collisions, as well as for nucleon-nucleon collisions. We further show that neither the factorization theorem nor the reaction-independence of the survival probabilities depends on the assumption of an additive quark model, but, more generally, depends on the opacity of the eikonal being independent of whether the reaction is n-n, gamma p or gamma gamma., Comment: 8 pages, Revtex, no figures.
