High-precision transit photometry supplies ideal opportunities for detecting new exoplanets and characterizing their physical properties, which usually encode valuable information for unveiling the planetary structure, atmosphere and dynamical history. We present revised properties of three transiting systems (i.e., HAT-P-13, HAT-P-16 and WASP-32) through analyzing TESS photometry and ground-based transit observations, which were obtained at the 1m and 2.4m telescopes of Yunnan Observatories, China, and the 1.2m telescope of Hamburg Observatory, Germany, as well as the data in the literature. During modelling the transit light curves, Gaussian process is employed to account for the potential systematic errors. Through comprehensive timing analysis, we find that both HAT-P-13b and HAT-P-16b show significant timing variations (TTVs) that can be explained by apsidal precession. TTVs of WASP-32b may be led by a decaying orbit due to tidal dissipation or apsidal precession. However, the current observations can not rule out the origins of three systems' TTVs from gravitational perturbations of close planetary companions conclusively., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) has three sub-arrays, KM2A, WCDA and WFCTA. The flux variations of cosmic ray air showers were studied by analyzing the KM2A data during the thunderstorm on 10 June 2021. The number of shower events that meet the trigger conditions increases significantly in atmospheric electric fields, with maximum fractional increase of 20%. The variations of trigger rates (increases or decreases) are found to be strongly dependent on the primary zenith angle. The flux of secondary particles increases significantly, following a similar trend with that of the shower events. To better understand the observed behavior, Monte Carlo simulations are performed with CORSIKA and G4KM2A (a code based on GEANT4). We find that the experimental data (in saturated negative fields) are in good agreement with simulations, assuming the presence of a uniform upward electric field of 700 V/cm with a thickness of 1500 m in the atmosphere above the observation level. Due to the acceleration/deceleration and deflection by the atmospheric electric field, the number of secondary particles with energy above the detector threshold is modified, resulting in the changes in shower detection rate., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

The Crab pulsar and the surrounding nebula powered by the pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind is a bright source of gamma-rays carrying crucial information about this complex conglomerate. We report the detection of $\gamma$-rays with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades, from $5\times 10^{-4}$ to $1.1$ petaelectronvolt (PeV). The ultra-high-energy photons exhibit the presence of a PeV electron accelerator (a pevatron) with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the absolute theoretical limit. Assuming that unpulsed $\gamma$-rays are produced at the termination of the pulsar's wind, we constrain the pevatron's size, between $0.025$ and $0.1$ pc, and the magnetic field $\approx 110 \mu$G. The production rate of PeV electrons, $2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg $\rm s^{-1}$, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, although we do not exclude a non-negligible contribution of PeV protons to the production of the highest energy $\gamma$-rays., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; Published in Science

The Wide Field-of-View Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) and the Water Cherenkov Detector Arrays (WCDA) of LHAASO are designed to work in combination for measuring the energy spectra of various cosmic ray species over a very wide energy range from a few TeV to 10 PeV. The energy calibration of WCDA can be achieved with a proven technique of measuring the westward shift of the Moon shadow of galactic cosmic rays due to the geomagnetic field. This deflection angle $\Delta$ is inversely proportional to the energy of the cosmic rays. The precise measurements of the shifts by WCDA allows us to calibrate its energy scale for energies as high as 35 TeV. The energy scale measured by WCDA can be used to cross calibrate the energy reconstructed by WFCTA, which spans the whole energy range up to 10 PeV. In this work, we will demonstrate the feasibility of the method using the data collected from April 2019 to January 2020 by the WFCTA array and WCDA-1 detector, the first of the three water Cherenkov ponds, already commissioned at LHAASO site.

The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. As a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), KM2A is mainly designed to cover a large fraction of the northern sky to hunt for gamma-ray sources at energies above 10 TeV. Even though the detector construction is still underway, a half of the KM2A array has been operating stably since the end of 2019. In this paper, we present the pipeline of KM2A data analysis and the first observation on the Crab Nebula, a standard candle in very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. We detect gamma-ray signals from the Crab Nebula in both energy ranges of 10$-$100 TeV and $>$100 TeV with high significance, by analyzing the KM2A data of 136 live days between December 2019 and May 2020. With the observations, we test the detector performance including angular resolution, pointing accuracy and cosmic ray background rejection power. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the energy range 10-250 TeV fits well with a single power-law function dN/dE =(1.13$\pm$0.05$_{stat}$$\pm$0.08$_{sys}$)$\times$10$^{-14}$$\cdot$(E/20TeV)$^{-3.09\pm0.06_{stat}\pm0.02_{sys}}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ TeV$^{-1}$. It is consistent with previous measurements by other experiments. In this contribution we are concerned with the asymptotic behaviour as $u\to \infty$ of $\mathbb{P}\{\sup_{t\in [0,T]} X_u(t)> u\}$, where $X_u(t),t\in [0,T],u>0$ is a family of centered Gaussian processes with continuous trajectories. A key application of our findings concerns $\mathbb{P}\{\sup_{t\in [0,T]} (X(t)+ g(t))> u\}$ as $u\to\infty$, for $X$ a centered Gaussian process and $g$ some measurable trend function. Further applications include the approximation of both the ruin time and the ruin probability of the Brownian motion risk model with constant force of interest., Comment: 28 pages

In the absence of any external applied magnetic field, we have found that a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) can produce a significant output direct voltage under microwave radiation at frequencies, which are far from the ferromagnetic resonance condition, and this voltage signal can be increase by at least an order of magnitude by applying a direct current bias. The enhancement of the microwave detection can be explained by the nonlinear resistance/conductance of the MTJs. Our estimation suggests that optimized MTJs should achieve sensitivities for non-resonant broadband microwave detection of about 5,000 mV/mW.

Spin rectification in a single crystal Fe/Au/Fe sandwich is electrically detected for collinear and non-collinear magnetization and external magnetic field configurations. The line shape, line width and signal polarity are analysed. The spin rectication theory has been much extended by taking the magneto-crystalline anisotropy and shape anisotropy into account, which explained non-collinear resonances and agrees very well with experimental data. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of spin rectification in ferromagnetic metal was demonstrated in this work.

A technique for rapidly detecting microwave phase has been developed which uses a spintronic device that can directly rectify microwave fields into a dc voltage signal. Use of a voltage-controlled phase shifter enables the development of a spintronic device that can simultaneously 'read' the magnitude and phase of incident continuous-wave (CW) microwaves when combined with a lock-in amplifier. As an example of many possible practical applications of this device, the resonance phase in a complementary electric inductive-capacitive (CELC) resonator has been characterized using a spintronic sensor based on a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). This sensor device is not limited for use only with spintronic devices such as MTJs, but can also be used with semiconductor devices such as microwave detectors, and hence offers a useful alternative to existing microwave imaging and characterization technologies.

Galaxy star formation rates (SFRs) are sensitive to the local environment; for example, the high-density regions at the cores of dense clusters are known to suppress star formation. It has been suggested that galaxy transformation occurs largely in groups, which are the intermediate step in density between field and cluster environments. In this paper, we use deep MIPS 24 micron observations of intermediate-redshift (0.3 < z < 0.55) group and field galaxies from the Group Environment and Evolution Collaboration (GEEC) subset of the Second Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC2) survey to probe the moderate-density environment of groups, wherein the majority of galaxies are found. The completeness limit of our study is log(L_TIR (L_sun)) > 10.5, corresponding to SFR > 2.7 M_sun/yr. We find that the group and field galaxies have different distributions of morphologies and mass. However, individual group galaxies have star-forming properties comparable to those of field galaxies of similar mass and morphology; that is, the group environment does not appear to modify the properties of these galaxies directly. There is a relatively large number of massive early-type group spirals, along with E/S0 galaxies, that are forming stars above our detection limit. These galaxies account for the nearly comparable level of star-forming activity in groups as compared with the field, despite the differences in mass and morphology distributions between the two environments. The distribution of specific SFRs (SFR/M_*) is shifted to lower values in the groups, reflecting the fact that groups contain a higher proportion of massive and less active galaxies. Spitzer-MIPS 24 micron and ground-based observations of the rich galaxy cluster Abell 851 at z=0.41 are used to derive star formation rates from the mid-IR 24 micron and from [O II] 3727 emission. Many cluster galaxies have SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) >> 1, indicative of star formation highly obscured by dust. We focus on the substantial minority of A851 cluster members where strong Balmer absorption points to a starburst on a 10^{8-9} year timescale. As is typical, A851 galaxies with strong Balmer absorption occur in two types: with optical emission (starforming), and without (post-starburst). Our principal result is the former, so-called e(a) galaxies, are mostly detected (9 out of 12) at 24 um -- for these we find typically SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) ~ 4. Strong Balmer absorption and high values of SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) both indicate moderately active starbursts and support the picture that e(a) galaxies are the active starbursts that feed the post-starburst population. While 24 um detections are frequent with Balmer-strong objects (even 6 out of 18 of the supposedly "post-starburst'' galaxies are detected) only 2 out of 7 of the continuously starforming `e(c)' galaxies (with weak Balmer absorption) are detected -- for them, SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) ~ 1. Their optical spectra resemble present-epoch spirals that dominate today's universe; we strengthen this association by that SFR(24 um)/SFR([O II]) ~ 1 is the norm today. That is, not just the amount of star formation, but its mode, has evolved strongly from z ~ 0.4 to the present. By fitting spectrophotometric models we measure the strength and duration of the bursts to quantify the evolutionary sequence from active- to post-starburst, and to harden the evidence that moderately active starbursts are the defining feature of starforming cluster galaxies at z ~ 0.4., Comment: Accepted to The Astrophysical Journal. As part of the "All Wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey" (AEGIS), we describe the panchromatic characterization of an X-ray luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN) in a merging galaxy at z=1.15. This object is detected at infrared (8mic, 24mic, 70mic, 160mic), submillimeter (850mic) and radio wavelengths, from which we derive a bolometric luminosity L_bol ~ 9x10^12 Lsol. We find that the AGN clearly dominates the hot dust emission below 40mic but its total energetic power inferred from the hard X-rays is substantially less than the bolometric output of the system. About 50% of the infrared luminosity is indeed produced by a cold dust component that probably originates from enshrouded star formation in the host galaxy. In the context of a coeval growth of stellar bulges and massive black holes, this source might represent a ``transition'' object sharing properties with both quasars and luminous starbursts. Study of such composite galaxies will help address how the star formation and disk-accretion phenomena may have regulated each other at high redshift and how this coordination may have participated to the build-up of the relationship observed locally between the masses of black holes and stellar spheroids., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL (AEGIS Special Edition) - 5 pages, 1 table, 3 figures

Excitons in a complex organic molecular crystal were studied by inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) for the first time. The dynamic dielectric response function is measured over a large momentum transfer region, from which an exciton dispersion of 130 meV is observed. Semiempirical quantum chemical calculations reproduce well the momentum dependence of the measured dynamic dielectric responses, and thus unambiguously indicate that the lowest Frenkel exciton is confined within a fraction of the complex molecule. Our results demonstrate that IXS is a powerful tool for studying excitons in complex organic molecular systems. We present Spitzer IRAC (3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0 um) and MIPS (24 um) observations of the SCUBA submillimeter sources and uJy VLA radio sources in a 5'x5' area in the Lockman Hole East region. Out of the ~40 SCUBA/VLA sources in the field, Spitzer counterparts were detected for nearly all except for the few low-weight SCUBA detections. We show that the majority (80-90%) of the detected sources are cold (i.e., starburst-like) infrared-luminous galaxies (L_{IR} > 10^{11} Lsun) at redshift 0.5

Galaxy source counts in the infrared provide strong constraints on the evolution of the bolometric energy output from distant galaxy populations. We present the results from deep 24 micron imaging from Spitzer surveys, which include approximately 50,000 sources to an 80% completeness of 60 uJy. The 24 micron counts rapidly rise at near-Euclidean rates down to 5 mJy, increase with a super-Euclidean rate between 0.4 - 4 mJy, and converge below 0.3 mJy. The 24 micron counts exceed expectations from non-evolving models by a factor >10 at 0.1 mJy. The peak in the differential number counts corresponds to a population of faint sources that is not expected from predictions based on 15 micron counts from ISO. We argue that this implies the existence of a previously undetected population of infrared-luminous galaxies at z ~ 1-3. Integrating the counts to 60 uJy, we derive a lower limit on the 24 micron background intensity of 1.9 +/- 0.6 nW m-2 sr-1 of which the majority (~ 60%) stems from sources fainter than 0.4 mJy. Extrapolating to fainter flux densities, sources below 60 uJy contribute 0.8 {+0.9/-0.4} nW m-2 sr-1 to the background, which provides an estimate of the total 24 micron background of 2.7 {+1.1/-0.7} nW m-2 sr-1., Comment: Accepted to the ApJS (Spitzer special issue); 5 pages, 3 color figures, uses emulateapj class

We derive galaxy source counts at 70 and 160 microns using the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) to map the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and other fields. At 70 microns, our observations extend upwards about 2 orders of magnitude in flux density from a threshold of 15 mJy, and at 160 microns they extend about an order of magnitude upward from 50 mJy. The counts are consistent with previous observations on the bright end. Significant evolution is detected at the faint end of the counts in both bands, by factors of 2-3 over no-evolution models. This evolution agrees well with models that indicate most ofthe faint galaxies lie at redshifts between 0.7 and 0.9. The new Spitzer data already resolve about 23% of the Cosmic Far Infrared Background at 70 microns and about 7% at 160 microns., Comment: Small modifications to match printed version. We use the source counts measured with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) at 24, 70, and 160 microns to determine the 5-sigma confusion limits due to extragalactic sources: 56 micro-Jy, 3.2 and 40 mJy at 24, 70 and 160 microns, respectively. We investigate Extremely Red Objects (EROs) using near- and mid-infrared observations in five passbands (3.6 to 24 micron) obtained from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and deep ground-based R and K imaging. The great sensitivity of the IRAC camera allows us to detect 64 EROs in only 12 minutes of IRAC exposure time, by means of an R-[3.6] color cut (analogous to the traditional red R-K cut). A pure infrared K-[3.6] red cut detects a somewhat different population and may be more effective at selecting z > 1.3 EROs. We find 17% of all galaxies detected by IRAC at 3.6 or 4.5 micron to be EROs. These percentages rise to about 40% at 5.8 micron, and about 60% at 8.0 micron. We utilize the spectral bump at 1.6 micron to divide the EROs into broad redshift slices using only near-infrared colors (2.2/3.6/4.5 micron). We conclude that two-thirds of all EROs lie at redshift z > 1.3. Detections at 24 micron imply that at least 11% of 0.6 < z < 1.3 EROs and at least 22% of z > 1.3 EROs are dusty star-forming galaxies., Comment: to appear in the special Spitzer issue of the ApJS
