Understanding the relationship between a population's probability of extinction and its carrying capacity is key in assessing conservation status, and critical to efforts to understand and mitigate the ongoing biodiversity crisis. Despite this, there has been limited research into the form of this relationshop. We conducted around five billion population viability assessments which reveal that the relationship is a modified Gompertz curve. This finding is consistent across around 1700 individual model populations, which between them span different breeding systems and widely varying rates of population growth, levels of environmental stochasticity, adult survival rate, age at first breeding and starting population size. Applying analytical methods to equations describing population dynamics showed that minimal assumptions were required to prove this is a general relationship whichholds for any extant population subject to density dependant growth. Finally, we discuss the implications of these finds and consider the practical use of our results by conservationists.

For the next step in human to machine interaction, Artificial Intelligence (AI) should interact predominantly using natural language because, if it worked, it would be the fastest way to communicate. Facebook's toy tasks (bAbI) provide a useful benchmark to compare implementations for conversational AI. While the published experiments so far have been based on exploiting the distributional hypothesis with machine learning, our model exploits natural language understanding (NLU) with the decomposition of language based on Role and Reference Grammar (RRG) and the brain-based Patom theory. Our combinatorial system for conversational AI based on linguistics has many advantages: passing bAbI task tests without parsing or statistics while increasing scalability. Our model validates both the training and test data to find 'garbage' input and output (GIGO). It is not rules-based, nor does it use parts of speech, but instead relies on meaning. While Deep Learning is difficult to debug and fix, every step in our model can be understood and changed like any non-statistical computer program. Deep Learning's lack of explicable reasoning has raised opposition to AI, partly due to fear of the unknown. To support the goals of AI, we propose extended tasks to use human-level statements with tense, aspect and voice, and embedded clauses with junctures: and answers to be natural language generation (NLG) instead of keywords. While machine learning permits invalid training data to produce incorrect test responses, our system cannot because the context tracking would need to be intentionally broken. We believe no existing learning systems can currently solve these extended natural language tests. The dynamical behavior of propagating structures, determined from a Karhunen-Lo`eve decomposition, in turbulent pipe flow undergoing reverse transition to laminar flow is investigated. The turbulent flow data is generated by a direct numerical simulation started at a fully turbulent Reynolds number of Re_\tau=150, which is slowly decreased until Re_\tau=95. At this low Reynolds number the high frequency modes decay first, leaving only the decaying streamwise vortices. The flow undergoes a chugging phenomena, where it begins to relaminarize and the mean velocity increases. The remaining propagating modes then destabilize the streamwise vortices, rebuild the energy spectra, and eventually the flow regains its turbulent state. Our results capture three chugging cycles before the flow completely relaminarizes. The high frequency modes present in the outer layer decay first, establishing the importance of the outer region in the self-sustaining mechanism of wall bound turbulence., Comment: 8 pages, 20 figures. The results of a comparative analysis based upon a Karhunen-Lo\`{e}ve expansion of turbulent pipe flow and drag reduced turbulent pipe flow by spanwise wall oscillation are presented. The turbulent flow is generated by a direct numerical simulation at a Reynolds number $Re_\tau = 150$. The spanwise wall oscillation is imposed as a velocity boundary condition with an amplitude of $A^+ = 20$ and a period of $T^+ = 50$. The wall oscillation results in a 27% mean velocity increase when the flow is driven by a constant pressure gradient. The peaks of the Reynolds stress and root-mean-squared velocities shift away from the wall and the Karhunen-Lo\`{e}ve dimension of the turbulent attractor is reduced from 2453 to 102. The coherent vorticity structures are pushed away from the wall into higher speed flow, causing an increase of their advection speed of 34% as determined by a normal speed locus. This increase in advection speed gives the propagating waves less time to interact with the roll modes. This leads to less energy transfer and a shorter lifespan of the propagating structures, and thus less Reynolds stress production which results in drag reduction., Comment: 11 pages, 21 figures. The results of an analysis of turbulent pipe flow based on a Karhunen-Lo`eve decomposition are presented. The turbulent flow is generated by a direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations using a spectral element algorithm at a Reynolds number Re_\tau=150. This simulation yields a set of basis functions that captures 90% of the energy after 2,453 modes. The eigenfunctions are categorised into two classes and six subclasses based on their wavenumber and coherent vorticity structure. Of the total energy, 81% is in the propagating class, characterised by constant phase speeds; the remaining energy is found in the non propagating subclasses, the shear and roll modes. The four subclasses of the propagating modes are the wall, lift, asymmetric, and ring modes. The wall modes display coherent vorticity structures near the wall, the lift modes display coherent vorticity structures that lift away from the wall, the asymmetric modes break the symmetry about the axis, and the ring modes display rings of coherent vorticity. Together, the propagating modes form a wave packet, as found from a circular normal speed locus. The energy transfer mechanism in the flow is a four step process. The process begins with energy being transferred from mean flow to the shear modes, then to the roll modes. Energy is then transfer ed from the roll modes to the wall modes, and then eventually to the lift modes. The ring and asymmetric modes act as catalysts that aid in this four step energy transfer. Lattice results and Dual QCD results for all heavy quark potentials through order (quark mass)^${-2}$ are exhibited and compared. Recently an electric and magnetic field correlator appearing in the description of the heavy quarkonium system was evaluated on the lattice. Here, we give a nonperturbative analytical evaluation of this field correlator using a dual description of long distance Yang--Mills theory and using the stochastic vacuum model. The two predictions are both compatible with lattice data but show a different dependence on the quark separation. In this paper we express the velocity dependent, spin dependent heavy quark potential $V_{q\bar q}$ in QCD in terms of a Wilson Loop $W(\Gamma)$ determined by pure Yang Mills theory. We use an effective dual theory of long-distance Yang Mills theory to calculate $W(\Gamma)$ for large loops; i.e. for loops of size $R > R_{FT}$. ($R_{FT}$ is the flux tube radius, fixed by the value of the Higgs (monopole) mass of the dual theory, which is a concrete realization of the Mandelstam 't Hooft dual superconductor mechanism of confinement). We replace $W(\Gamma)$ by $W_{eff}(\Gamma)$, given by a functional integral over the dual variables, which for $R > R_{FT}$ can be evaluated by a semiclassical expansion, since the dual theory is weakly coupled at these distances. The classical approximation gives the leading contribution to $W_{eff}(\Gamma)$ and yields a velocity dependent heavy quark potential which for large $R$ becomes linear in $R$, and which for small $R$ approaches lowest order perturbative QCD. This latter fact means that these results should remain applicable down to distances where radiative corrections giving rise to a running coupling constant become important. The spin dependence of the potential reflects the vector coupling of the quarks at long range as well as at short range. The methods developed here should be applicable to any realization of the dual superconductor mechanism. They give an expression determining $W_{eff}(\Gamma)$ independent of the classical approximation, but semi classical corrections due to fluctuations of the flux tube are not worked out in this paper. Old models of the scattering of composite systems based on the Glauber model of multiple diffraction are applied to hadron-nucleus scattering. We obtain an excellent fit with only two free parameters to the highest energy hadron-nucleus data available. Because of the quality of the fit and the simplicity of the model it is argued that it should continue to be reliable up to the highest cosmic ray energies. Logarithmic extrapolations of proton-proton and proton-antiproton data are used to calculate the proton-air cross sections at very high energy. Finally, it is observed that if the exponential behavior of the proton-antiproton diffraction peak continues into the few TeV energy range it will violate partial wave unitarity. We review the assumptions leading to the description of long distance QCD by a Lagrangian density expressed in terms of dual potentials. We find the color field distribution surrounding a quark anti-quark pair to first order in their velocities. Using these distributions we eliminate the dual potentials from the Lagrangian density and obtain an effective interaction Lagrangian $L_I ( \vec x_1 \, , \vec x_2 \, ; \vec v_1 \, , \vec v_2 )$ depending only upon the quark and anti-quark coordinates and velocities, valid to second order in their velocities. We propose $L_I$ as the Lagrangian describing the long distance interaction between constituent quarks. Elsewhere we have determined the two free parameters in $L_I$, $\alpha_s$ and the string tension $\sigma$, by fitting the 17 known levels of $b \bar b$ and $c \bar c$ systems. Here we use $L_I$ at the classical level to calculate the leading Regge trajectory. We obtain a trajectory which becomes linear at large $M^2$ with a slope $\alpha' \simeq .74 \, \hbox{GeV}^{-1}$, and for small $M^2$ the trajectory bends so that there are no tachyons. For a constituent quark mass between 100 and 150 MeV this trajectory passes through the two known Regge recurrences of the $\pi$ meson. The results of an analysis of low-Reynolds-number turbulent channel flow based on the Karhunen-Loeve (K-L) expansion are presented. The turbulent flow field is generated by a direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations at a Reynolds number Re(tau) = 80 (based on the wall shear velocity and channel half-width). The K-L procedure is then applied to determine the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for this flow. The random coefficients of the K-L expansion are subsequently found by projecting the numerical flow field onto these eigenfunctions. The resulting expansion captures 90 percent of the turbulent energy with significantly fewer modes than the original trigonometric expansion. The eigenfunctions, which appear either as rolls or shearing motions, possess viscous boundary layers at the walls and are much richer in harmonics than the original basis functions.

A direct simulation of turbulent flow in a channel is analyzed by the method of empirical eigenfunctions (Karhunen-Loeve procedure, proper orthogonal decomposition). This analysis reveals the presence of propagating plane waves in the turbulent flow. The velocity of propagation is determined by the flow velocity at the location of maximal Reynolds stress. The analysis further suggests that the interaction of these waves appears to be essential to the local production of turbulence via bursting or sweeping events in the turbulent boundary layer, with the additional suggestion that the fast acting plane waves act as triggers.
