The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries perform reconstruction of neutrino interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, which will operate four large-scale liquid argon time projection chambers at the far detector site in South Dakota, producing high-resolution images of charged particles emerging from neutrino interactions. While these high-resolution images provide excellent opportunities for physics, the complex topologies require sophisticated pattern recognition capabilities to interpret signals from the detectors as physically meaningful objects that form the inputs to physics analyses. A critical component is the identification of the neutrino interaction vertex. Subsequent reconstruction algorithms use this location to identify the individual primary particles and ensure they each result in a separate reconstructed particle. A new vertex-finding procedure described in this article integrates a U-ResNet neural network performing hit-level classification into the multi-algorithm approach used by Pandora to identify the neutrino interaction vertex. The machine learning solution is seamlessly integrated into a chain of pattern-recognition algorithms. The intense magnetic fields present in neutron stars are closely linked to their observed temperature and spectral characteristics, timing properties, including spin period and its derivatives. Therefore, a comprehensive theoretical analysis of magnetic field evolution is essential for understanding how the strength of the magnetic field change over time. The decay rate of magnetic field in isolated, non-accreting neutron stars can be assessed by evaluating the second derivative of the spin frequency. Another method to estimate this rate involves monitoring an increase in thermal emission beyond what is expected from standard cooling processes, assuming no additional heating mechanisms are present. Our findings indicate that for X-ray emitting isolated neutron stars, the evolution rate of spin period derivative aligns with the dissipation rate of magnetic energy from the dipolar field, provided that a substantial portion of the released energy is emitted as X-rays. The universal relationships for compact stars have been investigated employing perturbative approach using canonical (APR) and Brussels-Montreal Skyrme (BSk22, BSk24, BSk26) equations of state describing hadronic matter of neutron stars. The neutron star matter has been considered to be $\beta$-equilibrated neutron-proton-electron-muon matter at the core with a rigid crust. The multipole moments of a slowly rotating neutron star characterize its external gravitational field. These variables are dependent on the interior structure of the neutron star described by the equation of state of the neutron star matter. The properties of neutron stars, such as the mass, the radius, the dimensionless moment of inertia, the compactness, the Love number, the dimensionless tidal deformability and the dimensionless quadrupole moment have been calculated and relations among these quantities have been explored. It is found that most of these relations do not depend sensitively on the details of the internal structure of neutron stars. Such universality implies that the measurement of a single quantity appearing in a universal relation would automatically provide information about the others, notwithstanding the fact that those may not be accessible observationally. These can be used to estimate deformability of compact stars through moment of inertia measurements, to quantify spin in binary inspirals by breaking degeneracies in the detection of gravitational waves and test General Relativity in a way that is independent of nuclear structure., Comment: 12 pages including 21 figures and 1 table

The Rossby mode (r-mode) perturbation in pulsars as a steady gravitational wave (GW) source has been explored. The effect of a rigid crust on viscous damping and dissipation rate in the boundary layer between fluid core and crust has been studied. The intensity of the emitted GWs in terms of the strain tensor amplitude has been estimated with the approximation of slow rotation using equation of state derived from the APR and Skyrme effective interactions with Brussels-Montreal parameter sets. The equation of state of hot neutron star matter of n+p+e+$\mu$ composition in $\beta$-equilibrium is studied for both neutrino-free isothermal and neutrino-trapped isentropic conditions, using the formalism where the thermal evolution is built upon its zero-temperature predictions in a self-consistent manner. The accuracy of the parabolic approximation, often used in the finite temperature calculation of hot neutron star matter, is verified by comparing with the results obtained from the exact evaluation in the neutrino-free neutron star matter. The equation of state of neutrino-trapped isentropic matter at low entropic condition, relevant to the core-collapsing supernovae, is formulated. In the isentropic matter, the particle fractions and equation of state have marginal variance as entropy per particle varies between 1 to 3 (in the unit of k$_B$), but the temperature profile shows marked variation. The isentropes are found to be much less sensitive to the nuclear matter incompressibility, but have a large dependence on the slope parameter L. The bulk properties of the neutron stars predicted by the isentropic equation of state for different entropy are calculated. There is a high demand for nuclear data in multidisciplinary subject like nuclear astrophysics. The two areas of nuclear physics which are most clearly related to one another are stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis. The necessity for nuclear data for astrophysical applications puts experimental methods as well as reliability and predicative ability of current nuclear models to the test. Despite recent, considerable advances, there are still significant issues and mysteries. Only a few characteristics of nuclear astrophysics are covered in the current work which include $^{20}$Ne(n,$\gamma$)$^{21}$Ne, $^{52}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{53}$Fe, $^{53}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{54}$Fe, $^{54}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{55}$Fe and $^{55}$Fe(n,$\gamma$)$^{56}$Fe reactions which are important in stellar nucleosynthesis. The stellar configurations of quark stars are studied using perturbative QCD (pQCD) for the equation of state (EoS). The neutron star structures with equation of state obtained from Brussels-Montreal extended Skyrme interaction are also explored. The deconfinement phase transition from quark to hadron phase in stellar interior for matter under extreme pressure is accomplished by employing the Maxwell construction. The influence of hybrid EoS on the jump in energy density has been investigated. To study hybrid stars the BSk24 hadronic model and pQCD EoS for the quark phase have been used. The properties of hybrid stars in the view of the very recent astrophysical observations have been examined. The core of the neutron star has been considered to be $\beta$-equilibrated nuclear matter composed of neutrons, protons, electrons and muons, which is surrounded by a solid crust. Calculations have been made for the critical frequencies, the evolution of frequencies and frequency change rates with time as well as the fiducial viscous and gravitational timescales, across a broad spectrum of pulsar masses. Our findings reveal that the r-mode instability region is associated with rotating young and hot pulsars. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that pulsars with low $L$ value emit gravitational radiation and fall within the r-mode instability region if the primary dissipative mechanism is shear viscosity along the crust-core interface boundary layer. The r-mode perturbation amplitude increases because of GW emissions, in contrast to other non-radial perturbations which transport to infinity the star's angular momentum. Thus the presence of these stellar perturbations implies a non-negative rate of change in transfer of rotational angular momentum. This observation suggests that for a glitching pulsar, the GW emission intensity evolves increasingly with time till the angular frequency diminishes to a value that is below a crucial threshold, after which the compact star ceases to emit radiation., Comment: 15 pages including 15 figures and 2 tables

One of the three testaments in favor of the big bang theory is the prediction of the primordial elemental abundances in the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The Standard BBN is a parameter-free theory due to the precise knowledge of the baryon-to-photon ratio of the Universe obtained from studies of the anisotropies of cosmic microwave background radiation. Although the computed abundances of light elements during primordial nucleosynthesis and those determined from observations are in good agreement throughout a range of nine orders of magnitude, there is still a disparity of $^7$Li abundance overestimated by a factor of $\sim 2.5$ when calculated theoretically. The number of light neutrino flavors, the neutron lifetime and the baryon-to-photon ratio in addition to the astrophysical nuclear reaction rates determine the primordial abundances. We previously looked into the impact of updating baryon-to-photon ratio and neutron lifetime and changing quite a few reaction rates on the yields of light element abundances in BBN. In this work, calculations are performed using new reaction rates for $^3$H(p,$\gamma$)$^4$He, $^6$Li(p,$\gamma$)$^7$Be, $^7$Be(p,$\gamma$)$^8$B, $^{13}$N(p,$\gamma$)$^{14}$O, $^7$Li(n,$\gamma$)$^8$Li and $^{11}$B(n,$\gamma$)$^{12}$B along with the latest measured value of neutron lifetime. We observe from theoretical calculations that these changes result in improvement by causing further reduction in the abundance of $^7$Li than calculated earlier., Comment: 7 pages including 2 tables

We address the issues of crustal properties of neutron stars such as crustal mass, crustal radius, crustal fraction of moment of inertia and investigate the crustal and structural properties related to the glitching mechanism observed in pulsars. The mass, radius and crustal fraction of moment of inertia in neutron stars have been determined using $\beta$-equilibrated (npe$\mu$) dense neutron star matter obtained using the extended Skyrme effective interactions with NRAPR and Brussels-Montreal parameter sets. The maximum mass of neutron star calculated from these sets is able to reach $\sim$2$M_\odot$ and higher, corroborating the recently observed masses of compact stars. The crustal fraction of the moment of inertia depends sensitively on the pressure and corresponding density at core-crust transition. The core-crust transition density and pressure together with the extracted minimum crustal fraction of the total moment of inertia provide a limit for the radii of pulsars. Present calculations imply that due to crustal entrainment the crustal fraction of the total moment of inertia is about 5.5$\%$., Comment: 10 pages including 6 figures and 3 tables. The sub-barrier fusion hindrance has been observed in the domain of very low energies of astrophysical relevance. This phenomenon can be analyzed effectively using an uncomplicated straightforward elegant mathematical formula gleaned presuming diffused barrier with a Gaussian distribution. The mathematical formula for cross section of nuclear fusion reaction has been obtained by folding together a Gaussian function representing the fusion barrier height distribution and the expression for classical cross section of fusion assuming a fixed barrier. The variation of fusion cross section as a function of energy, thus obtained, describes well the existing data on sub-barrier heavy-ion fusion for lighter systems of astrophysical interest. Employing this elegant formula, cross sections of interacting nuclei from $^{16}$O + $^{18}$O to $^{12}$C + $^{198}$Pt, all of which were measured down to $<$ 10 $\mu$b have been analyzed. The agreement of the present analysis with the measured values is comparable, if not better, than those calculated from more sophisticated calculations. The three parameters of this formula varies rather smoothly implying its usage in estimating the excitation function or extrapolating cross sections for pairs of interacting nuclei which are yet to be measured. About half of the elements beyond iron are synthesized in stars by rapid-neutron capture process (r-process). The stellar environment provides very high neutron flux in a short time ($\sim$ seconds) which is conducive for the creation of progressively neutron-rich nuclei till the waiting point is reached after which no further neutron capture reactions proceed. At this point such extremely neutron-rich nuclei become stable via $\beta^-$ decay. A detailed understanding of the r-process remains illusive. In the present work, we explore the radiative neutron-capture (n,$\gamma$) cross sections and reaction rates around the r-process peak near mass number eighty. The inherent uncertainties remain large in some cases, particularly in case of neutron-rich nuclei. The hindrance in fusion of heavy-ion reactions crops up in the region of extreme sub-barrier energies. This phenomenon can be effectively analyzed using a simple diffused barrier formula derived assuming a Gaussian distribution of fusion barrier heights. Folding the Gaussian barrier distribution with the classical expression for the fusion cross section for a fixed barrier, the fusion cross section is obtained. The energy dependence of the fusion cross section provides good description to the existing data on sub-barrier heavy-ion fusion for lighter systems of astrophysical interest. Using this simple formula, an analysis has been presented from $^{16}$O + $^{18}$O to $^{12}$C + $^{198}$Pt, all of which were measured down to $<$ 10 $\mu$b. The agreement of the present analysis with the measured values is better than those calculated even from the sophisticated coupled channels calculations. The relatively smooth variation of the three parameters of this formula implies that it may be exploited to estimate the excitation function or to extrapolate cross sections for pairs of interacting nuclei which are yet to be measured. Recently super-Chandrasekhar mass limit has been derived theoretically in presence of strong magnetic field to complement experimental observations. In the framework of Newtonian physics, we have studied the equilibrium configurations of such magnetized white dwarfs by using the relativistic Thomas-Fermi equation of state for magnetized white-dwarfs. Hartle formalism, for slowly rotating stars, has been employed to obtain the equations of equilibrium. Various physical quantities of uniformly rotating and non-rotating white dwarfs have been calculated within this formalism. Consequently, the universality relationship between the moment of inertia(I), rotational love number($\lambda$) and spin induced quadrupole moment(Q), namely the I-Love-Q relationship, has been investigated for such magnetized white dwarfs. The relationship between I, eccentricity and Q i.e. I-eccentricity-Q relationship has also been derived. The relativistic Feynman-Metropolis-Teller treatment of compressed atoms is extended to treat magnetized matter. Each atomic configuration is confined by a Wigner-Seitz cell and is characterized by a positive electron Fermi energy which varies insignificantly with the magnetic field. In the relativistic treatment the limiting configuration is reached when the Wigner-Seitz cell radius equals the radius of the nucleus with a maximum value of the electron Fermi energy which can not be attained in presence of magnetic field due to the effect of Landau quantization of electrons within the Wigner-Seitz cell. This treatment is implemented to develop the Equation of State for magnetized White Dwarf stars in presence of Coulomb screening. The mass-radius relations for magnetized White Dwarfs are obtained by solving the general relativistic hydrostatic equilibrium equations using Schwarzschild metric description suitable for non rotating and slowly rotating stars. The radiative neutron capture reaction rates have been studied at very low energies which are of interest for nuclear astrophysics. The rates for many of these reactions have remained independent of temperature so far. The temperature dependence of the thermonuclear reaction rates have been explored within the statistical model. Apart from the compound nuclear contribution, the pre-equilibrium as well as the direct effects have been taken into account. The corresponding Maxwellian-averaged thermonuclear reaction rates of relevance in astrophysical plasmas at temperatures in the range from 10$^6$ K to 10$^{10}$ K have been calculated. In the present work, we explore the Rossby mode instabilities in neutron stars as sources of gravitational waves. The intensity and time evolution of the emitted gravitational waves in terms of the amplitude of the strain tensor are estimated in the slow rotation approximation using $\beta$-equilibrated neutron star matter obtained from density dependent M3Y effective interaction. For a wide range of neutron star masses, the fiducial gravitational and various viscous time scales, the critical frequencies and the time evolutions of the frequencies are calculated. The dissipative mechanism of the Rossby modes is considered to be driven by the shear viscosity along the boundary layer of the solid crust-liquid core interface as well as in the core and the bulk viscosity. We present here a robust analytical model based on nuclear reaction theory for non-resonant fusion cross sections near Coulomb barrier. The astrophysical $S$-factors involving stable and neutron rich isotopes of C, O, Ne, Mg and Si for fusion reactions have been calculated in the centre of mass energy range of 2-30 MeV. The model is based on the tunneling through barrier arising out of nuclear, Coulomb and centrifugal potentials. Our formalism predicts precisely the suppression of $S$-factor at sub-barrier energies which are of astrophysical interest. The cross sections can be convoluted with Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution of energies to obtain thermo- or pycno- nuclear reaction rates relevant to nucleosynthesis at high density environments and stellar burning at high temperatures as well as for $^{34}$Ne $+$ $^{34}$Ne fusion occurring in the inner crust of accreting neutron stars., Comment: 8 pages including 12 figures and 1 table

The cross sections for the deep sub-barrier fusion reaction of light nuclei are calculated within the theoretical framework of the selective resonant tunneling model. In this model, assumption of a complex square-well nuclear potential is invoked to describe the absorption inside the nuclear well. The theoretical estimates for these cross sections agree well with the experimentally measured values. The features of the astrophysical S-factor are derived in terms of this model. The half-lives of proton radioactivity of proton emitters are investigated theoretically by using KDE0v1 Skyrme interaction. The total barrier potential in the proton radioactive nuclei is calculated as the sum of the nuclear, Coulomb and centrifugal contributions. The Hartree-Fock nuclear density distributions is used in calculating the nuclear as well as the Coulomb interaction potentials. The quantum mechanical tunneling probability is calculated within the WKB approximation. The characteristic physical properties of rotating neutron stars under the r-mode oscillation are evaluated using the finite-range simple effective interaction. Emphasis is given on examining the influence of the stiffness of both the symmetric and asymmetric parts of the nuclear equation of state on these properties. The amplitude of the r-mode at saturation is calculated using the data of particular neutron stars from the considerations of "spin equilibrium" and "thermal equilibrium". In this work we study the r-mode instability windows and the gravitational wave signatures of neutron stars in the slow rotation approximation using the equation of state obtained from the density dependent M3Y effective interaction. We consider the neutron star matter to be $\beta$-equilibrated neutron-proton-electron matter at the core with a rigid crust. The fiducial gravitational and viscous timescales, the critical frequencies and the time evolutions of the frequencies and the rates of frequency change are calculated for a range of neutron star masses. We show that the young and hot rotating neutron stars lie in the r-mode instability region. Prediction of the primordial abundances of elements in the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is one of the three strong evidences for the big bang model. Precise knowledge of the baryon-to-photon ratio of the Universe from observations of the anisotropies of cosmic microwave background radiation has made the Standard BBN a parameter-free theory. Although, there is a good agreement over a range of nine orders of magnitude between abundances of light elements deduced from observations and calculated in primordial nucleosynthesis, there remains a yet-unexplained discrepancy of $^7$Li abundance higher by a factor of $\sim 3$ when calculated theoretically. The primordial abundances depend on the astrophysical nuclear reaction rates and on three additional parameters, the number of light neutrino flavours, the neutron lifetime and the baryon-to-photon ratio in the universe. The effect of the modification of thirty-five reaction rates on light element abundance yields in BBN was investigated earlier by us. In the present work we have incorporated the most recent values of neutron lifetime and the baryon-to-photon ratio and further modified $^3$He($^4$He,$\gamma$)$^7$Be reaction rate which is used directly for estimating the formation of $^7$Li as a result of $\beta^+$ decay as well as the reaction rates for t($^4$He,$\gamma$)$^7$Li and d($^4$He,$\gamma$)$^6$Li. The masses and radii of non-rotating and rotating configurations of pure hadronic stars mixed with self-interacting fermionic Asymmetric Dark Matter are calculated within the two-fluid formalism of stellar structure equations in general relativity. The Equation of State (EoS) of nuclear matter is obtained from the density dependent M3Y effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. We consider dark matter particle mass of 1 GeV. The EoS of self-interacting dark matter is taken from two-body repulsive interactions of the scale of strong interactions. We explore the conditions of equal and different rotational frequencies of nuclear matter and dark matter and find that the maximum mass of differentially rotating stars with self-interacting dark matter to be $\sim 1.94 M_\odot$ with radius $\sim 10.4$ kms., Comment: 9 pages including 1 table & 8 figures

The mass, radius and crustal fraction of moment of inertia in neutron stars are calculated using $\beta$-equilibrated nuclear matter obtained from Skyrme effective interaction. The transition density, pressure and proton fraction at the inner edge separating the liquid core from the solid crust of the neutron stars are determined from the thermodynamic stability conditions using the KDE0v1 set. The neutron star masses obtained by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations using neutron star matter obtained from this set is able to describe highly massive compact stars $\sim$2$M_{\odot}$. The crustal fraction of the moment of inertia can be extracted from studying pulsar glitches. This fraction is highly dependent on the core-crust transition pressure and corresponding density. These results for pressure and density at core-crust transition together with the observed minimum crustal fraction of the total moment of inertia provide a limit for the radius of the Vela pulsar:$R\geq$ 3.69+3.44 M/$M_{\odot}$. A comparative study of fission of actinides specially $^{238}$U, by proton and bremsstrahlung photon is performed. Relative mass distribution of $^{238}$U fission fragments have been explored theoretically for both proton and photon induced fission. The integrated yield along with charge distribution of the products are calculated to find out the neutron richness in comparison to the nuclei produced by r-process in nucleosynthesis. Some r-process nuclei in intermediate mass range for symmetric fission mode are found to be produced almost two order of magnitude more for proton induced fission than photofission, although rest of the neutron rich nuclei in the asymmetric mode are produced in comparable proportion for both the processes., Comment: 6 pages including 2 tables & 8 figures

The importance of the fourth and higher order terms in the Taylor series expansion of the energy of the isospin asymmetric nuclear matter in the study of the neutron star crust-core phase transition is investigated using the finite range simple effective interaction. Analytic expressions for the evaluation of the second and fourth order derivative terms in the Taylor series expansion for any general finite range interaction of Yukawa, exponential or Gaussian form have been obtained. The effect of the nuclear matter incompressibility, symmetry energy and slope parameters on the predictions for the crust-core transition density is examined. Recently, several white dwarfs have been proposed with masses significantly above the Chandrasekhar limit, known as Super-Chandrasekhar White Dwarfs, to account for the overluminous Type Ia supernovae. In the present work, Equation of State of a completely degenerate relativistic electron gas in magnetic field based on Landau quantization of charged particles in a magnetic field is developed. The mass-radius relations for magnetized White Dwarfs are obtained by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations. The crustal fraction of moment of inertia in neutron stars is calculated using $\beta$-equilibrated nuclear matter obtained from density dependent M3Y effective interaction. The transition density, pressure and proton fraction at the inner edge separating the liquid core from the solid crust of the neutron stars determined from the thermodynamic stability conditions are found to be $\rho_t=$ 0.0938 fm$^{-3}$, P$_t=$ 0.5006 MeV fm$^{-3}$ and $x_{p(t)}=$ 0.0308, respectively. The crustal fraction of the moment of inertia can be extracted from studying pulsar glitches and is most sensitive to the pressure as well as density at the transition from the crust to the core. Existing data on near-barrier fusion excitation functions of medium and heavy nucleus-nucleus systems have been analyzed using a simple diffused barrier formula derived assuming the Gaussian shape of the barrier height distributions. Fusion cross section is obtained by folding the Gaussian barrier distribution with the classical expression for the fusion cross section for a fixed barrier. The energy dependence of the fusion cross section, thus obtained, provides good description to the existing data on near-barrier fusion and capture excitation functions for medium and heavy nucleus-nucleus systems. The parabolic approximation to the equation of state of the isospin asymmetric nuclear matter (ANM) is widely used in the literature to make predictions for the nuclear structure and the neutron star properties. Based on the realistic M3Y-Paris and M3Y-Reid nucleon-nucleon interactions, we investigate the effects of the higher-order symmetry energy on the proton fraction in neutron stars and the location of the inner edge of their crusts and their core-crust transition density and pressure, thermodynamically. Analytical expressions for different-order symmetry energy coefficients of ANM are derived using the realistic interactions mentioned above. It is found that the higher-order terms of the symmetry energy coefficients up to its eighth-order (E$_{sym8}$) contributes substantially to the proton fraction in $\beta$ stable neutron star matter at different nuclear matter densities, the core-crust transition density and pressure. Even by considering the symmetry energy coefficients up to E$_{sym8}$, we obtain a significant change of about 40$\%$ in the transition pressure value from the one based on the exact equation of state. Using equations of state based on both Paris and Reid effective interactions which provide saturation incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter in the range of 220 MeV$\leq$K$_0$$\leq$270 MeV, we estimate the ranges 0.090 fm$^{-3}$$\leq$$\rho_t$$\leq$0.095 fm$^{-3}$ and 0.49 MeV fm$^{-3}$$\leq$P$_t$$\leq$ 0.59 MeV fm$^{-3}$ for the liquid core-solid crust transition density and pressure, respectively. The corresponding range of the proton fraction at this transition density range is found to be 0.029$\leq$x$_{p(t)}$$\leq$0.032., Comment: 11 pages, 1 table, 1 figure

We present a systematic study of the properties of pure hadronic and hybrid compact stars. The nuclear equation of state (EoS) for beta-equilibrated neutron star matter was obtained using density dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interaction which satisfies the constraints from the observed flow data from heavy-ion collisions. The energy density of quark matter is lower than that of this nuclear EoS at higher densities implying the possibility of transition to quark matter inside the core. We solve the Einstein's equations for rotating stars using pure nuclear matter and quark core. The beta- equilibrated neutron star matter with a thin crust is able to describe highly massive compact stars but find that the nuclear to quark matter deconfinement transition inside neutron stars causes reduction in their masses. Recent observations of the binary millisecond pulsar J1614-2230 by P. B. Demorest et al. [1] suggest that the masses lie within 1.97\pm0.04 M\odot where M\odot is the solar mass. In conformity with recent observations, pure nucleonic EoS determines that the maximum mass of NS rotating with frequency below r-mode instability is ~1.95 M\odot with radius ~10 kilometers. Although compact stars with quark cores rotating with Kepler's frequency have masses up to ~2 M\odot, but if the maximum frequency is limited by the r-mode instability, the maximum mass ~1.7 M\odot turns out to be lower than the observed mass of 1.97\pm0.04 M\odot, by far the highest yet measured with such certainty, implying exclusion of quark cores for such massive pulsars., Comment: 12 pages including 6 figures

The potential barrier impeding the spontaneous emission of protons in the proton radioactive nuclei is calculated as the sum of nuclear, Coulomb and centrifugal contributions. The nuclear part of the proton-nucleus interaction potential is obtained in the energy density formalism using Skyrme effective interaction that results into a simple algebraic expression. The half-lives of the proton emitters are calculated for the different Skyrme sets within the improved WKB framework. The theoretical predictions of the primordial abundances of elements in the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) are dominated by uncertainties in the input nuclear reaction rates. We investigate the effect of modifying these reaction rates on light element abundance yields in BBN by replacing the thirty-five reaction rates out of the existing eighty-eight. We have studied these yields as functions of evolution time or temperature. We find that using these new reaction rates results in only a little increase in helium mass fraction over that obtained previously in BBN calculations. This allows insights into the role of the nuclear reaction rates in the setting of the neutron-to-proton ratio during the BBN epoch. This article describes four innovative pedagogical exercises: (i) The expression for relation between cross sections in the laboratory and the centre of mass systems provided in text books assumes zero or low Q values which needs to be corrected for the most general case when Q value of the reaction is not negligible compared to the masses of interacting nuclei. The general expression derived here can be used for elastic and inelastic cases involving zero, low or even very high Q values. (ii) The equation of oscillatory motion of a massive surface put horizontally on two wheels rotating with equal and opposite angular velocities is established. The time period of oscillation is related to the coefficient of dynamic friction between the surface and the wheels which facilitates the measurement of the coefficient of dynamic friction. (iii) The equation of motion of a fixed torque mass shedding vehicle moving against friction and its velocity at any instant of time are derived. This example is equivalent to motion of a mass shedding rocket moving by applying fixed force against atmospheric friction. (iv) The equation of the path of a missile directed at every instant of time towards a rectilinearly moving target and time taken to hit the target are derived. Here an efficient fusion technique for automatic face recognition has been presented. Fusion of visual and thermal images has been done to take the advantages of thermal images as well as visual images. By employing fusion a new image can be obtained, which provides the most detailed, reliable, and discriminating information. In this method fused images are generated using visual and thermal face images in the first step. In the second step, fused images are projected into eigenspace and finally classified using a radial basis function neural network. In the experiments Object Tracking and Classification Beyond Visible Spectrum (OTCBVS) database benchmark for thermal and visual face images have been used. Experimental results show that the proposed approach performs well in recognizing unknown individuals with a maximum success rate of 96%.

Artificial neural networks have already shown their success in face recognition and similar complex pattern recognition tasks. However, a major disadvantage of the technique is that it is extremely slow during training for larger classes and hence not suitable for real-time complex problems such as pattern recognition. This is an attempt to develop a parallel framework for the training algorithm of a perceptron. In this paper, two general architectures for a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) have been demonstrated. The first architecture is All-Class-in-One-Network (ACON) where all the classes are placed in a single network and the second one is One-Class-in-One-Network (OCON) where an individual single network is responsible for each and every class. Capabilities of these two architectures were compared and verified in solving human face recognition, which is a complex pattern recognition task where several factors affect the recognition performance like pose variations, facial expression changes, occlusions, and most importantly illumination changes. Both the structures were implemented and tested for face recognition purpose and experimental results show that the OCON structure performs better than the generally used ACON ones in term of training convergence speed of the network. Unlike the conventional sequential approach of training the neural networks, the OCON technique may be implemented by training all the classes of the face images simultaneously.

In this paper we present a comparative study on fusion of visual and thermal images using different wavelet transformations. Here, coefficients of discrete wavelet transforms from both visual and thermal images are computed separately and combined. Next, inverse discrete wavelet transformation is taken in order to obtain fused face image. Both Haar and Daubechies (db2) wavelet transforms have been used to compare recognition results. For experiments IRIS Thermal/Visual Face Database was used. Experimental results using Haar and Daubechies wavelets show that the performance of the approach presented here achieves maximum success rate of 100% in many cases.

This paper presents a novel type-2 Fuzzy logic System to define the Shape of a facial component with the crisp output. This work is the part of our main research effort to design a system (called FASY) which offers a novel face construction approach based on the textual description and also extracts and analyzes the facial components from a face image by an efficient technique. The Fuzzy model, designed in this paper, takes crisp value of width and height of a facial component and produces the crisp value of Shape for different facial components. This method is designed using Matlab 6.5 and Visual Basic 6.0 and tested with the facial components extracted from 200 male and female face images of different ages from different face databases.

This paper deals with a new method for recognition of offline Handwritten non-compound Devnagari Characters in two stages. It uses two well known and established pattern recognition techniques: one using neural networks and the other one using minimum edit distance. Each of these techniques is applied on different sets of characters for recognition. In the first stage, two sets of features are computed and two classifiers are applied to get higher recognition accuracy. Two MLP's are used separately to recognize the characters. For one of the MLP's the characters are represented with their shadow features and for the other chain code histogram feature is used. The decision of both MLP's is combined using weighted majority scheme. Top three results produced by combined MLP's in the first stage are used to calculate the relative difference values. In the second stage, based on these relative differences character set is divided into two. First set consists of the characters with distinct shapes and second set consists of confused characters, which appear very similar in shapes. Characters of distinct shapes of first set are classified using MLP. Confused characters in second set are classified using minimum edit distance method. Method of minimum edit distance makes use of corner detected in a character image using modified Harris corner detection technique. Experiment on this method is carried out on a database of 7154 samples. The overall recognition is found to be 90.74%.

In this paper a scheme for offline Handwritten Devnagari Character Recognition is proposed, which uses different feature extraction methodologies and recognition algorithms. The proposed system assumes no constraints in writing style or size. First the character is preprocessed and features namely : Chain code histogram and moment invariant features are extracted and fed to Multilayer Perceptrons as a preliminary recognition step. Finally the results of both MLP's are combined using weighted majority scheme. The proposed system is tested on 1500 handwritten devnagari character database collected from different people. It is observed that the proposed system achieves recognition rates 98.03% for top 5 results and 89.46% for top 1 result.

Classification methods based on learning from examples have been widely applied to character recognition from the 1990s and have brought forth significant improvements of recognition accuracies. This class of methods includes statistical methods, artificial neural networks, support vector machines (SVM), multiple classifier combination, etc. In this paper, we discuss the characteristics of the some classification methods that have been successfully applied to handwritten Devnagari character recognition and results of SVM and ANNs classification method, applied on Handwritten Devnagari characters. After preprocessing the character image, we extracted shadow features, chain code histogram features, view based features and longest run features. These features are then fed to Neural classifier and in support vector machine for classification. In neural classifier, we explored three ways of combining decisions of four MLP's designed for four different features.

We construct an analytical model derived from nuclear reaction theory and having a simple functional form to demonstrate the quantitative agreement with the measured cross sections for neutron induced reactions. The neutron-nucleus total, reaction and scattering cross sections, for energies ranging from 5 to 700 MeV and for several nuclei spanning a wide mass range are estimated. Systematics of neutron scattering cross sections on various materials for neutron energies upto several hundred MeV are important for ADSS applications. The reaction cross sections of neutrons are useful for determining the neutron induced fission yields in actinides and pre-actinides. The present model based on nuclear reaction theory provides good estimates of the total cross section for neutron induced reaction., Comment: 25 pages including 16 figures
