We present a transmission spectrum of the misaligned hot Jupiter WASP-15b from 2.8--5.2 microns observed with JWST's NIRSpec/G395H grating. Our high signal to noise data, which has negligible red noise, reveals significant absorption by H$_2$O ($4.2\sigma$) and CO$_2$ ($8.9\sigma$). From independent data reduction and atmospheric retrieval approaches, we infer that WASP-15b's atmospheric metallicity is super-solar ($\gtrsim 15\times$ solar) and its C/O is consistent with solar, that together imply planetesimal accretion. Our GCM simulations for WASP-15b suggest that the C/O we measure at the limb is likely representative of the entire photosphere due to the mostly uniform spatial distribution of H$_2$O, CO$_2$ and CO. We additionally see evidence for absorption by SO$_2$ and absorption at 4.9$\mu$m, for which the current leading candidate is OCS, albeit with several caveats. If confirmed, this would be the first detection of OCS in an exoplanet atmosphere and point towards complex photochemistry of sulphur-bearing species in the upper atmosphere. These are the first observations from the BOWIE-ALIGN survey which is using JWST's NIRSpec/G395H instrument to compare the atmospheric compositions of aligned/low-obliquity and misaligned/high-obliquity hot Jupiters around F stars above the Kraft break. Vertical gas and dust flows in protoplanetary discs waft material above the midplane region in the presence of a protoplanet. This motion may alter the delivery of dust to the planet and its circumplanetary disc, as well as through a planetary-induced gap region and hence the inner disc chemistry. Here, we investigate the impact of a massive embedded planet on this material transport through the gap region. We use 3D global hydrodynamic simulations run using FARGO3D with gas and dust species to investigate the dust filtration and the origin of material that can make it through the gap. We find small dust particles can pass through the gap as expected from results in 2D, and that this can be considered in two parts - filtering due to the planetary-induced pressure maximum, and filtering due to accretion onto the planet. When gas accretion onto the planet is included, we find that the larger dust grains that cross the gap (i.e. those with $\mathrm{St} \sim 10^{-4}$) originate from regions near the mid-plane. We also find that dust and gas that enter the planet-carved gap region pass through the Hill sphere of the planet, where the temperature is likely to be strongly enhanced compared with the mid-plane regions from which this material originated. Considering the application of our simulations to a Jupiter-mass planet at $\sim 100\ \mathrm{AU}$, this suggests that CO ice is very likely to desorb from grains in the close proximity of the planet, without requiring any fine-tuning of the planet's location with respect to the CO snowline., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Many of the most intriguing features, including spirals and cavities, in the current disc observations are found in binary systems like GG Tau, HD 142527 or HD 100453. Such features are evidence of the dynamic interaction between binary stars and the viscous disc. Understanding these dynamic interactions and how they result in the structure and growth of asymmetric circumbinary discs is a difficult problem, for which there is no complete analytical solution, that predicts the shape of the observed disc accurately. We use numeric simulation to evolve circumbinary discs with varying disc viscosities and investigate the size and shape of the inner cavities in such protoplanetary discs. We have simulated over 140 locally isothermal 2D grid-based disc models for > 3e4 binary orbits each and mapped out the parameter space relevant for protoplanetary discs. With this, it becomes possible to create parametrised profiles for individual discs to compare to observation and find limits to their binary eccentricity or internal viscosity from the simulation data. In the long-term simulations larger cavity sizes than previously considered are possible within the parameter space (< 6 binary separations). As an example, we find that the eccentricity of the disc around HD 142527 suggests the impact of the binary dynamics on the disc. A primary objective of exoplanet atmosphere characterisation is to learn about planet formation and evolution, however, this is challenged by degeneracies. To determine whether differences in atmospheric composition can be reliably traced to differences in evolution, we are undertaking a transmission spectroscopy survey with JWST to compare the compositions of a sample of hot Jupiters that have different orbital alignments around F stars above the Kraft break. Under the assumption that aligned planets migrate through the inner disc, while misaligned planets migrate after disc dispersal, the act of migrating through the inner disc should cause a measurable difference in the C/O between aligned and misaligned planets. We expect the amplitude and sign of this difference to depend on the amount of planetesimal accretion and whether silicates accreted from the inner disc release their oxygen. Here, we identify all known exoplanets that are suitable for testing this hypothesis, describe our JWST survey, and use noise simulations and atmospheric retrievals to estimate our survey's sensitivity. Hot Jupiters present a unique opportunity for measuring how planet formation history shapes present-day atmospheric composition. However, due to the myriad pathways influencing composition, a well-constructed sample of planets is needed to determine whether formation history can be accurately traced back from atmospheric composition. To this end, the BOWIE-ALIGN survey will compare the compositions of 8 hot Jupiters around F stars, 4 with orbits aligned with the stellar rotation axis and 4 misaligned. Using the alignment as an indicator for planets that underwent disc migration or high-eccentricity migration, one can determine whether migration history produces notable differences in composition between the two samples of planets. This paper describes the planet formation model that motivates our observing programme. Our model traces the accretion of chemical components from the gas and dust in the disc over a broad parameter space to create a full, unbiased model sample from which we can estimate the range of final atmospheric compositions. For high metallicity atmospheres (O/H > 10 times solar), the C/O ratios of aligned and misaligned planets diverge, with aligned planets having lower C/O (< 0.25) due to the accretion of oxygen-rich silicates from the inner disc. However, silicates may rain out instead of releasing their oxygen into the atmosphere. This would significantly increase the C/O of aligned planets (C/O > 0.6), inverting the trend between the aligned and misaligned planets. The gas and solid-state C/O ratios provide context to potentially link the atmospheric composition of planets to that of the natal disk. We provide a synthesis of extant estimates of the gaseous C/O and C/H ratios in planet-forming disks obtained primarily through analysis of Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations. These estimates are compared to atmospheric abundances of wide separation (> 10 au) gas giants. The resolved disk gas C/O ratios, from seven systems, generally exhibit C/O > 1 with sub-solar, or depleted, carbon content. In contrast, wide separation gas giants have atmospheric C/O ratios that cluster near or slightly above the presumed stellar value with a range of elemental C/H. From the existing disk composition, we infer that the solid-state mm/cm-sized pebbles have a total C/O ratio (solid cores and ices) that is solar (stellar) in content. We explore simple models that reconstruct the exoplanet atmospheric composition from the disk, while accounting for silicate cloud formation in the planet atmosphere. If wide separate planets formed via the core-accretion mechanism, they must acquire their metals from pebble or planetesimal accretion. Further, the dispersion in giant planet C/H content is best matched by a disk composition with modest and variable factors of carbon depletion. An origin of the wide separation gas giants via gravitational instability cannot be ruled out as stellar C/O ratios should natively form in this scenario. While high resolution ALMA observations reveal a wealth of substructure in protoplanetary discs, they remain incapable of resolving the types of small scale dust structures predicted, for example, by numerical simulations of the streaming instability. In this Letter, we propose a method to find evidence for unresolved, optically thick dusty rings in protoplanetary disks. We demonstrate that, in presence of unresolved rings, the brightness of an inclined disc exhibits a distinctive emission peak at the minor axis. Furthermore, the azimuthal brightness depends on both the geometry of the rings and the dust optical properties; we can therefore use the azimuthal brightness variations to both detect unresolved rings and probe their properties. By analyzing the azimuthal brightness in the test-case of ring-like substructures formed by streaming instability, we show that the resulting peak is likely detectable by ALMA for typical disc parameters. Moreover, we present an analytic model that not only qualitatively but also quantitatively reproduces the peak found in the simulations, validating its applicability to infer the presence of unresolved rings in observations and characterize their optical properties and shape. The evolution of many astrophysical systems depends strongly on the balance between heating and cooling, in particular star formation in giant molecular clouds and the evolution of young protostellar systems. Protostellar discs are susceptible to the gravitational instability, which can play a key role in their evolution and in planet formation. The strength of the instability depends on the rate at which the system loses thermal energy. To study the evolution of these systems, we require radiative cooling approximations because full radiative transfer is generally too expensive to be coupled to hydrodynamical models. Here we present two new approximate methods for computing radiative cooling that make use of the polytropic cooling approximation. This approach invokes the assumption that each parcel of gas is located within a spherical pseudo-cloud which can then be used to approximate the optical depth. The first method combines the methods introduced by Stamatellos et al. and Lombardi et al. to overcome the limitations of each method at low and high optical depths respectively. The second, the "Modified Lombardi" method, is specifically tailored for self-gravitating discs. This modifies the scale height estimate from the method of Lombardi et al. using the analytical scale height for a self-gravitating disc. We show that the Modified Lombardi method provides an excellent approximation for the column density in a fragmenting disc, a regime in which the existing methods fail to recover the clumps and spiral structures. We therefore recommend this improved radiative cooling method for more realistic simulations of self-gravitating discs., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 10 pages

ALMA (Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array) observations of the thermal emission from protoplanetary disc dust have revealed a wealth of substructures that could evidence embedded planets, but planet-driven spirals, one of the more compelling lines of evidence, remain relatively rare. Existing works have focused on detecting these spirals using methods that operate in image space. Here, we explore the planet detection capabilities of fitting planet-driven spirals to disc observations directly in visibility space. We test our method on synthetic ALMA observations of planet-containing model discs for a range of disc/observational parameters, finding it significantly outperforms image residuals in identifying spirals in these observations and is able to identify spirals in regions of the parameter space in which no gaps are detected. These tests suggest that a visibility-space fitting approach warrants further investigation and may be able to find planet-driven spirals in observations that have not yet been found with existing approaches. We also test our method on six discs in the Taurus molecular cloud observed with ALMA at 1.33 mm, but find no evidence for planet-driven spirals. We find that the minimum planet masses necessary to drive detectable spirals range from $\approx$ 0.03 to 0.5 $M_{\text{Jup}}$ over orbital radii of 10 to 100 au, with planet masses below these thresholds potentially hiding in such disc observations. Conversely, we suggest that planets $\gtrsim$ 0.5 to 1 $M_{\text{Jup}}$ can likely be ruled out over orbital radii of $\approx$ 20 to 60 au on the grounds that we would have detected them if they were present., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables. We present a new 2D axisymmetric code, cuDisc, for studying protoplanetary discs, focusing on the self-consistent calculation of dust dynamics, grain size distribution and disc temperature. Self-consistently studying these physical processes is essential for many disc problems, such as structure formation and dust removal, given that the processes heavily depend on one another. To follow the evolution over substantial fractions of the disc lifetime, cuDisc uses the CUDA language and libraries to speed up the code through GPU acceleration. cuDisc employs a second-order finite-volume Godonuv solver for dust dynamics, solves the Smoluchowski equation for dust growth and calculates radiative transfer using a multi-frequency hybrid ray-tracing/flux-limited-diffusion method. We benchmark our code against current state-of-the-art codes. Through studying steady-state problems, we find that including 2D structure reveals that when collisions are important, the dust vertical structure appears to reach a diffusion-settling-coagulation equilibrium that can differ substantially from standard models that ignore coagulation. For low fragmentation velocities, we find an enhancement of intermediate-sized dust grains at heights of ~ 1 gas scale height due to the variation in collision rates with height, and for large fragmentation velocities, we find an enhancement of small grains around the disc mid-plane due to collisional ''sweeping'' of small grains by large grains. These results could be important for the analysis of disc SEDs or scattered light images, given these observables are sensitive to the vertical grain distribution., Comment: 18 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS. We carry out three dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations to study the role of gravitational and drag forces on the concentration of large dust grains (St > 1) in the spiral arms of gravitationally unstable protoplanetary discs, and the resulting implications for planet formation. We find that both drag and gravity play an important role in the evolution of large dust grains. If we include both, grains that would otherwise be partially decoupled will become well coupled and trace the spirals. For the dust grains most influenced by drag (with Stokes numbers near unity), the dust disc quickly becomes gravitationally unstable and rapidly forms clumps with masses between 0.15 - 6 Earth masses. A large fraction of clumps are below the threshold where runaway gas accretion can occur. However, if dust self-gravity is neglected, the dust is unable to form clumps, despite still becoming trapped in the gas spirals. When large dust grains are unable to feel either gas gravity or drag, the dust is unable to trace the gas spirals. Hence, full physics is needed to properly simulate dust in gravitationally unstable discs. Dust trapping of large grains in spiral arms of discs stable to gas fragmentation could explain planet formation in very young discs by a population of planetesimals formed due to the combined roles of drag and gravity in the earliest stages of a disc's evolution. Furthermore, it highlights that gravitationally unstable discs are not just important for forming gas giants quickly, it can also rapidly form Earth mass bodies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We introduce a new technique to determine the gas turbulence and surface density in bright disc rings, under the assumption that dust growth is limited by turbulent fragmentation at the ring centre. We benchmark this prescription in HD 163296, showing that our measurements are consistent with available turbulence upper limits and agree with independent estimates of the gas surface density within a factor of two. We combine our results with literature measurements of the dust surface density and grain size to determine the dust-to-gas ratio and Stokes number in the 67 au and 100 au rings. Our estimates suggest that particle clumping is taking place under the effect of streaming instability (SI) in the 100 au ring. Even though in the presence of external isotropic turbulence this process might be hindered, we provide evidence that turbulence is non-isotropic in both rings and likely originating from mechanisms (such as ambipolar diffusion) that could ease particle clumping under SI. Finally, we determine the mass accretion rate under the assumption that the disc is in steady state and turbulence regulates angular momentum transport. Our results are in tension with spectroscopic measurements and suggest that other mechanisms might be responsible for accretion, in qualitative agreement with the detection of a magneto-centrifugal wind in this system. Observations reveal protoplanetary discs being perturbed by flyby candidates. We simulate a scenario where an unbound perturber, i.e., a flyby, undergoes an inclined grazing encounter, capturing material and forming a second-generation protoplanetary disc. We run $N$--body and three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of a parabolic flyby grazing a particle disc and a gas-rich protoplanetary disc, respectively. In both our $N$--body and hydrodynamic simulations, we find that the captured, second-generation disc forms at a tilt twice the initial flyby tilt. This relationship is robust to variations in the flyby's tilt, position angle, periastron, and mass. We extend this concept by also simulating the case where the flyby has a disc of material prior to the encounter but we do not find the same trend. An inclined disc with respect to the primary disc around a misaligned flyby is tilted by a few degrees, remaining close to its initial disc tilt. Therefore, if a disc is present around the flyby before the encounter, the disc may not tilt up to twice the perturber tilt depending on the balance between the angular momentum of the circumsecondary disc and captured particles. In the case where the perturber has no initial disc, analyzing the orientation of these second-generation discs can give information about the orbital properties of the flyby encounter., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Constraining the vertical and radial structure of debris discs is crucial to understanding their formation, evolution and dynamics. To measure both the radial and vertical structure, a disc must be sufficiently inclined. However, if a disc is too close to edge-on, deprojecting its emission becomes non-trivial. In this paper we show how Frankenstein, a non-parametric tool to extract the radial brightness profile of circumstellar discs, can be used to deproject their emission at any inclination as long as they are optically thin and axisymmetric. Furthermore, we extend Frankenstein to account for the vertical thickness of an optically thin disc ($H(r)$) and show how it can be constrained by sampling its posterior probability distribution and assuming a functional form (e.g. constant $h=H/r$), while fitting the radial profile non-parametrically. We use this new method to determine the radial and vertical structure of 16 highly inclined debris discs observed by ALMA. We find a wide range of vertical aspect ratios, $h$, ranging from $0.020\pm0.002$ (AU Mic) to $0.20\pm0.03$ (HD 110058), which are consistent with parametric models. We find a tentative correlation between $h$ and the disc fractional width, as expected if wide discs were more stirred. Assuming discs are self-stirred, the thinnest discs would require the presence of at least 500 km-sized planetesimals. The thickest discs would likely require the presence of planets. We also recover previously inferred and new radial structures, including a potential gap in the radial distribution of HD 61005. Finally, our new extension of Frankenstein also allows constraining how $h$ varies as a function of radius, which we test on 49 Ceti, finding that $h$ is consistent with being constant., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 17 pages. 16 figures

In this work, we develop a rocky planet interior model and use it to investigate the evolution of catastrophically evaporating rocky exoplanets. These planets, detected through the dust tails produced by evaporative outflows from their molten surfaces, can be entirely destroyed in a fraction of their host star's lifetime. To allow for the major decrease in mass, our interior model can simultaneously calculate the evolution of the pressure and density structure of a planet alongside its thermal evolution, which includes the effects of conduction, convection and partial melting. We first use this model to show that the underlying planets are likely to be almost entirely solid. This means that the dusty tails are made up of material sampled only from a thin dayside lava pool. If one wishes to infer the bulk compositions of rocky exoplanets from their dust tails, it is important to take the localised origin of this material into account. Secondly, by considering how frequently one should be able to detect mass loss from these systems, we investigate the occurrence of sub-Earth mass exoplanets, which is difficult with conventional planet detection surveys. We predict that, depending on model assumptions, the number of progenitors of the catastrophically evaporating planets is either in line with, or higher than, the observed population of close-in (substellar temperatures around 2200 K) terrestrial exoplanets., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a new 1-D multi-physics simulation code with use cases intended for, but not limited to, hydrodynamic escapeproblems of planetary atmospheres and planetary accretion models. Our formulation treats an arbitrary number of species asseparated hydrodynamic fields, couples them via friction laws, allows for a multi-band flux-limited radiation transport, and tracksionization fronts in high-energy irradiation bands. Besides coupling various known numerical solution techniques together, weimprove on the numerical stability of deep hydrostatic atmospheres by using a well-balanced scheme, hence preventing unphysicaldriving of atmospheric in- or outflow. We demonstrate the correct physical behaviour of the individual code modules and presenta few simple, new applications, such as a proof-of-concept simulations of combined core-powered mass-loss and UV-drivenatmospheric escape, along with a fully time-dependent core-collapse giant planet simulation. Liquid democracy is a hybrid direct-representative decision making process that provides each voter with the option of either voting directly or to delegate their vote to another voter, i.e., to a representative of their choice. One of the proposed advantages of liquid democracy is that, in general, it is assumed that voters will delegate their vote to others that are better informed, which leads to more informed and better decisions. Considering an audience from various knowledge domains, we provide an accessible high-level analysis of a prominent critique of liquid democracy by Caragiannis and Micha. Caragiannis and Micha's critique contains three central topics: 1. Analysis using their $\alpha$-delegation model, which does not assume delegation to the more informed; 2. Novel delegation network structures where it is advantageous to delegate to the less informed rather than the more informed; and 3. Due to NP hardness, the implied impracticability of a social network obtaining an optimal delegation structure. We show that in the real world, Caragiannis and Micha's critique of liquid democracy has little or no relevance. Respectively, our critique is based on: 1. The identification of incorrect $\alpha$-delegation model assumptions; 2. A lack of novel delegation structures and their effect in a real-world implementation of liquid democracy, which would be guaranteed with constraints that sensibly distribute voting power; and 3. The irrelevance of an optimal delegation structure if the correct result is guaranteed regardless. We conclude that Caragiannis and Micha's critique has no significant negative relevance to the proposition of liquid democracy.

Axisymmetric dust rings containing tens to hundreds of Earth masses of solids have been observed in protoplanetary discs with (sub-)millimetre imaging. Here, we investigate the growth of a planetary embryo in a massive (150M$_\oplus$) axisymmetric dust trap through dust and gas hydrodynamics simulations. When accounting for the accretion luminosity of the planetary embryo from pebble accretion, the thermal feedback on the surrounding gas leads to the formation of an anticyclonic vortex. Since the vortex forms at the location of the planet, this has significant consequences for the planet's growth: as dust drifts towards the pressure maximum at the centre of the vortex, which is initially co-located with the planet, a rapid accretion rate is achieved, in a distinct phase of ``vortex-assisted'' pebble accretion. Once the vortex separates from the planet due to interactions with the disc, it accumulates dust, shutting off accretion onto the planet. We find that this rapid accretion, mediated by the vortex, results in a planet containing $\approx$ 100M$_\oplus$ of solids. We follow the evolution of the vortex, as well as the efficiency with which dust grains accumulate at its pressure maximum as a function of their size, and investigate the consequences this has for the growth of the planet as well as the morphology of the protoplanetary disc. We speculate that this extreme formation scenario may be the origin of giant planets which are identified to be significantly enhanced in heavy elements., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. The 1.33 mm survey of protoplanetary discs in the Taurus molecular cloud found annular gaps and rings to be common in extended sources (>~55 au), when their 1D visibility distributions were fit parametrically. We first demonstrate the advantages and limitations of nonparametric visibility fits for data at the survey's 0.12" resolution. Then we use the nonparametric model in Frankenstein ('frank') to identify new substructure in three compact and seven extended sources. Among the new features we identify three trends: a higher occurrence rate of substructure in the survey's compact discs than previously seen, underresolved (potentially azimuthally asymmetric) substructure in the innermost disc of extended sources, and a 'shoulder' on the trailing edge of a ring in discs with strong depletion at small radii. Noting the shoulder morphology is present in multiple discs observed at higher resolution, we postulate it is tracing a common physical mechanism. We further demonstrate how a super-resolution frank brightness profile is useful in motivating an accurate parametric model, using the highly structured source DL Tau in which frank finds two new rings. Finally we show that sparse (u, v) plane sampling may be masking the presence of substructure in several additional compact survey sources., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

The radial extent of millimetre dust in protoplanetary discs is often far smaller than that of their gas, mostly due to processes such as dust growth and radial drift. However, it has been suggested that current millimetre continuum observations of discs do not trace their full extent due to limited sensitivity. In this Letter, we present deep (19 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$) moderate resolution (0.37") ALMA observations at 1 mm of the nearest protoplanetary disc, TW Hya. Using the visibility analysis tool `frank', we reveal a structured millimetre intensity distribution out to 100 au, well beyond previous estimates of 60-70 au. Our analysis suggests the presence of a new millimetre continuum gap at 82 au, coincident with similar features seen in optical/near-infrared scattered light and millimetre molecular line observations. Examination of the fit residuals confirms the presence of the previously reported au-scale continuum excess at 52 au (P.A. = 242.5 degrees). Consider the following belief change/merging scenario. A group of information sources gives a sequence of reports about the state of the world at various instances (e.g. different points in time). The true states at these instances are unknown to us. The sources have varying levels of expertise, also unknown to us, and may be knowledgeable on some topics but not others. This may cause sources to report false statements in areas they lack expertise. What should we believe on the basis of these reports? We provide a framework in which to explore this problem, based on an extension of propositional logic with expertise formulas. This extended language allows us to express beliefs about the state of the world at each instance, as well as beliefs about the expertise of each source. Ultra-short period planets offer a window into the poorly understood interior composition of exoplanets through material evaporated from their rocky interiors. Among these objects are a class of disintegrating planets, observed when their dusty tails transit in front of their host stars. These dusty tails are thought to originate from dust condensation in thermally-driven winds emanating from the sublimating surfaces of these planets. Existing models of these winds have been unable to explain their highly variable nature and have not explicitly modelled how dust forms in the wind. Here we present new radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the winds from these planets, including a minimal model for the formation and destruction of dust, assuming that nucleation can readily take place. We find that dust forms readily in the winds, a consequence of large dust grains obtaining lower temperatures than the planet's surface. As hypothesised previously, we find that the coupling of the planet's surface temperature to the outflow properties via the dust's opacity can drive time-variable flows when dust condensation is sufficiently fast. In agreement with previous work, our models suggest that these dusty tails are a signature of catastrophically evaporating planets that are close to the end of their lives. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for the dust's composition. More detailed hydrodynamic models that self-consistently compute the nucleation and composition of the dust and gas are warranted in order to use these models to study the planet's interior composition., Comment: 15 pages. The composition of forming planets is strongly affected by the protoplanetary disc's thermal structure. This thermal structure is predominantly set by dust radiative transfer and viscous (accretional) heating and can be impacted by gaps - regions of low dust and gas density that can occur when planets form. The effect of variations in dust surface density on disc temperature has been poorly understood until now. In this work, we use the radiative transfer code MCMax to model the 2D dust thermal structure with individual gaps corresponding to planets with masses of 0.1 M$_J$ - 5 M$_J$ and orbital radii of 3, 5, and 10 AU. Low dust opacity in the gap allows radiation to penetrate deeper into the disc and warm the midplane by up to 16 K, but only for gaps located in the region of the disc where stellar irradiation is the dominant source of heat (here, a$\gtrsim$4 AU). In viscously-heated regions (a$\lesssim$4 AU), the midplane of the gap is relatively cooler by up to 100 K. Outside of the gap, broad radial oscillations in heating and cooling are present due to changes in disc flaring. These thermal features affect local segregation of volatile elements (H$_2$O, CH$_4$, CO2, CO) between the dust and gas. We find that icelines experience dramatic shifts relative to gapless models: up to 6.5 AU towards the star and 4.3 AU towards the midplane. While quantitative predictions of iceline deviations will require more sophisticated models which include transport and sublimation/condensation kinetics, our results provide evidence that planet-induced iceline variations represent a potential feedback from the planet onto the composition of material it is accreting., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. ALMA continuum observations of thermal emission from the dust component of protoplanetary disks have revealed an abundance of substructures that may be interpreted as evidence for embedded planets, but planet-driven spiral arms -- perhaps one of the most compelling lines of evidence -- have proven comparatively elusive. In this work, we test the capabilities of ALMA to detect the planet-driven spiral signal in continuum emission. Carrying out hydrodynamic simulations and radiative transfer calculations, we present synthetic Band 7 continuum images for a wide range of disk and observing conditions. We show that thermal mass planets at tens of au typically drive spirals detectable within a few hours of integration time, and the detectable planet mass may be as low as $\sim$Neptune mass ($0.3 \, M_{\rm th}$). The grains probed by ALMA form spirals morphologically identical to the underlying gas spiral. The temperature of the dust spiral is crucial in determining its contrast, and spirals are easier to detect in disks with an adiabatic equation of state and longer cooling times. Resolving the spiral is not necessary for its detection; with the help of residual maps, the optimal beam size is a few times the spiral width at a constant noise level. Finally, we show how the presence of gaps and rings can impair our ability to recognize co-located spirals. Our work demonstrates the planet-finding potential of the current design specification of ALMA, and suggests that observing capability is not the bottleneck in searching for spirals induced by thermal mass planets., Comment: 11 figures, 20 pages. ALMA observations of dust ring/gap structures in a minority but growing sample of protoplanetary disks can be explained by the presence of planets at large disk radii - yet the origins of these planets remains debated. We perform planet formation simulations using a semi-analytic model of the HL Tau disk to follow the growth and migration of hundreds of planetary embryos initially distributed throughout the disk, assuming either a high or low turbulent $\alpha$ viscosity. We have discovered that there is a bifurcation in the migration history of forming planets as a consequence of varying the disk viscosity. In our high viscosity disks, inward migration prevails and yields compact planetary systems, tempered only by planet trapping at the water iceline around 5 au. In our lower viscosity models however, low mass planets can migrate outward to twice their initial orbital radii, driven by a radially extended region of strong outward-directed corotation torques located near the heat transition (where radiative heating of the disk by the star is comparable to viscous heating) - before eventually migrating inwards. We derive analytic expressions for the planet mass at which the corotation torque dominates, and find that this "corotation mass" scales as $M_{\rm p, corot} \sim \alpha^{2/3}$. If disk winds dominate the corotation torque, the corotation mass scales linearly with wind strength. We propose that the observed bifurcation in disk demographics into a majority of compact dust disks and a minority of extended ring/gap systems is a consequence of a distribution of viscosity across the disk population., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, 10 movies (links embedded). Thermal disc winds occur in many contexts and may be particularly important to the secular evolution and dispersal of protoplanetary discs heated by high energy radiation from their central star. In this paper we generalise previous models of self-similar thermal winds - which have self-consistent morphology and variation of flow variables - to the case of launch from an elevated base and to non-isothermal conditions. These solutions are well-reproduced by hydrodynamic simulations, in which, as in the case of isothermal winds launched from the mid-plane, we find winds launch at the maximum Mach number for which the streamline solutions extend to infinity without encountering a singularity. We explain this behaviour based on the fact that lower Mach number solutions do not fill the spatial domain. We also show that hydrodynamic simulations reflect the corresponding self-similar models across a range of conditions appropriate to photoevaporating protoplanetary discs, even when gravity, centrifugal forces, or changes in the density gradient mean the problem is not inherently scale free. Of all the parameters varied, the elevation of the wind base affected the launch velocity and flow morphology most strongly, with temperature gradients causing only minor differences. We explore how launching from an elevated base affects Ne II line profiles from winds, finding it increases (reduces) the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the line at low (high) inclination to the line of sight compared with models launched from the disc mid-plane and thus weakens the dependence of the FWHM on inclination., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted after revision for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we investigate whether overdensity formation via streaming instability is consistent with recent multi-wavelength ALMA observations in the Lupus star forming region. We simulate the local action of streaming instability in 2D using the code ATHENA, and examine the radiative properties at mm wavelengths of the resulting clumpy dust distribution by focusing on two observable quantities: the optically thick fraction $ff$ (in ALMA band 6) and the spectral index $\alpha$ (in bands 3-7). By comparing the simulated distribution in the $ff-\alpha$ plane before and after the action of streaming instability, we observe that clump formation causes $ff$ to drop, because of the suppression of emission from grains that end up in optically thick clumps. $\alpha$, instead, can either increase or decline after the action of streaming instability; we use a simple toy model to demonstrate that this behaviour depends on the sizes of the grains whose emission is suppressed by being incorporated in optically thick clumps. In particular, the sign of evolution of $\alpha$ depends on whether grains near the opacity maximum at a few tenths of a mm end up in clumps. By comparing the simulation distributions before/after clump formation to the data distribution, we note that the action of streaming instability drives simulations towards the area of the plane where the data are located. We furthermore demonstrate that this behaviour is replicated in integrated disc models provided that the instability is operative over a region of the disc that contributes significantly to the total mm flux., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The DSHARP survey evidenced the ubiquity of substructure in the mm dust distribution of large, bright protoplanetary discs. Intriguingly, these datasets have yet higher resolution information that is not recovered in a CLEAN image. We first show that the intrinsic performance of the CLEAN algorithm is resolution-limited. Then analyzing all 20 DSHARP sources using the 1D, super-resolution code Frankenstein (frank), we accurately fit the 1D visibilities to a mean factor of 4.3 longer baseline than the Fourier transform of the CLEAN images and a factor of 3.0 longer baseline than the transform of the CLEAN component models. This yields a higher resolution brightness profile for each source, identifying new substructure interior to 30 au in multiple discs; resolving known gaps to be deeper, wider, and more structured; and known rings to be narrower and brighter. Across the survey, high contrast gaps are an average 14% wider and 44% deeper in the frank profiles relative to CLEAN, and high contrast rings are an average 26% narrower. Categorizing the frank brightness profiles into trends, we find that the relative scarcity of features interior to 30 au in the survey's CLEAN images is an artifact of resolving power, rather than an intrinsic rarity of inner disc (or compact disc) substructure. Finally the rings in the frank profiles are narrower than the previously inferred deconvolved widths, indicating smaller alpha / St ratios in the local gas disc., Comment: Revised version, accepted to MNRAS. The origin of the inner dust cavities observed in transition discs remains unknown. The segregation of dust and size of the cavity is expected to vary depending on which clearing mechanism dominates grain evolution. We present the results from the Discs Down Under program, an 8.8 mm continuum Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) survey targeting 15 transition discs with large (> 20 au) cavities, and compare the resulting dust emission to Atacama Large millimetre/sub-millimetre Array (ALMA) observations. Our ATCA observations resolve the inner cavity for 8 of the 14 detected discs. We fit the visibilities and reconstruct 1D radial brightness models for 10 sources with a S/N > 5sigma. We find that, for sources with a resolved cavity in both wavebands, the 8.8 mm and sub-mm brightness distributions peak at the same radius from the star. We suggest that a similar cavity size for 8.8 mm and sub-mm dust grains is due to a dust trap induced by the presence of a companion., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

A necessary first step for dust removal in protoplanetary disc winds is the delivery of dust from the disc to the wind. In the case of ionized winds, the disc and wind are sharply delineated by a narrow ionization front where the gas density and temperature vary by more than an order of magnitude. Using a novel method that is able to model the transport of dust across the ionization front in the presence of disc turbulence, we revisit the problem of dust delivery. Our results show that the delivery of dust to the wind is determined by the vertical gas flow through the disc induced by the mass loss, rather than turbulent diffusion (unless the turbulence is strong, i.e. $\alpha \gtrsim 0.01$). Using these results we provide a simple relation between the maximum size of particle that can be delivered to the wind and the local mass-loss rate per unit area from the wind. This relation is independent of the physical origin of the wind and predicts typical sizes in the 0.01 -- $1\,\mu m$ range for EUV or X-ray driven winds. These values are a factor $\sim 10$ smaller than those obtained when considering only whether the wind is able to carry away the grains., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ranking the participants of a tournament has applications in voting, paired comparisons analysis, sports and other domains. In this paper we introduce bipartite tournaments, which model situations in which two different kinds of entity compete indirectly via matches against players of the opposite kind; examples include education (students/exam questions) and solo sports (golfers/courses). In particular, we look to find rankings via chain graphs, which correspond to bipartite tournaments in which the sets of adversaries defeated by the players on one side are nested with respect to set inclusion. Tournaments of this form have a natural and appealing ranking associated with them. We apply chain editing -- finding the minimum number of edge changes required to form a chain graph -- as a new mechanism for tournament ranking. The properties of these rankings are investigated in a probabilistic setting, where they arise as maximum likelihood estimators, and through the axiomatic method of social choice theory. Despite some nice properties, two problems remain: an important anonymity axiom is violated, and chain editing is NP-hard. We address both issues by relaxing the minimisation constraint in chain editing, and characterise the resulting ranking methods via a greedy approximation algorithm., Comment: Presented at AAMAS 2021

Recent observations have revealed that most proto-planetary discs show a pattern of bright rings and dark gaps. However, most of the high-resolution observations have focused only on the continuum emission. In this Paper we present high-resolution ALMA band 7 (0.89mm) observations of the disc around the star CI Tau in the $^{12}$CO & $^{13}$CO $J=3$-2 and CS $J=7$-6 emission lines. Our recent work demonstrated that the disc around CI Tau contains three gaps and rings in continuum emission, and we look for their counterparts in the gas emission. While we find no counterpart of the third gap and ring in $^{13}$CO, the disc has a gap in emission at the location of the second continuum ring (rather than gap). We demonstrate that this is mostly an artefact of the continuum subtraction, although a residual gap still remains after accounting for this effect. Through radiative transfer modelling we propose this is due to the inner disc shadowing the outer parts of the disc and making them colder. This raises a note of caution in mapping high-resolution gas emission lines observations to the gas surface density - while possible, this needs to be done carefully. In contrast to $^{13}$CO, CS emission shows instead a ring morphology, most likely due to chemical effects. We investigate the impact of pre-main sequence stellar luminosity evolution on the thermal and chemical properties of disc midplanes. We create template disc models exemplifying initial conditions for giant planet formation for a variety of stellar masses and ages. These models include the 2D physical structure of gas as well as 1D chemical structure in the disc midplane. The disc temperature profiles are calculated using fully physically consistent radiative transfer models for stars between 0.5 and 3 Msun and ages up to 10 Myr. The resulting temperature profiles are used to determine how the chemical conditions in the mid-plane change over time. We therefore obtain gas and ice-phase abundances of the main carbon and oxygen carrier species. While the temperature profiles produced are not markedly different for the stars of different masses at early stages (<1 Myr), they start to diverge significantly beyond 2 Myr. Discs around stars with mass >1.5 Msun become warmer over time as the stellar luminosity increases, whereas low-mass stars decrease in luminosity leading to cooler discs. This has an observable effect on the location of the CO snowline, which is located >200 au in most models for a 3 Msun star, but is always within 80 au for 0.5 Msun star. The chemical compositions calculated show that a well defined stellar mass and age range exists in which high C/O gas giants can form. In the case of the exoplanet HR8799b, our models show it must have formed before the star was 1 Myr old.

Recent observations have uncovered a correlation between the accretion rates (measured from the UV continuum excess) of protoplanetary discs and their masses inferred from observations of the sub-mm continuum. While viscous evolution models predict such a correlation, the predicted values are in tension with data obtained from the Lupus and Upper Scorpius star forming regions; for example, they underpredict the scatter in accretion rates, particularly in older regions. Here we argue that since the sub-mm observations trace the discs' dust, by explicitly modelling the dust grain growth, evolution, and emission, we can better understand the correlation. We show that for turbulent viscosities with $\alpha \lesssim 10^{-3}$, the depletion of dust from the disc due to radial drift means we can reproduce the range of masses and accretion rates seen in the Lupus and Upper Sco datasets. One consequence of this model is that the upper locus of accretion rates at a given dust mass does not evolve with the age of the region. Moreover, we find that internal photoevaporation is necessary to produce the lowest accretion rates observed. In order to replicate the correct dust masses at the time of disc dispersal, we favour relatively low photoevaporation rates $\lesssim 10^{-9}~M_{\odot}~\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$ for most sources but cannot discriminate between EUV or X-ray driven winds. A limited number of sources, particularly in Lupus, are shown to have higher masses than predicted by our models which may be evidence for variations in the properties of the dust or dust trapping induced in substructures., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

The belief revision literature has largely focussed on the issue of how to revise one's beliefs in the light of information regarding matters of fact. Here we turn to an important but comparatively neglected issue: How might one extend a revision operator to handle conditionals as input? Our approach to this question of 'conditional revision' is distinctive insofar as it abstracts from the controversial details of how to revise by factual sentences. We introduce a 'plug and play' method for uniquely extending any iterated belief revision operator to the conditional case. The flexibility of our approach is achieved by having the result of a conditional revision by a Ramsey Test conditional ('arrow') determined by that of a plain revision by its corresponding material conditional ('hook'). Interferometric observations of the mm dust distribution in protoplanetary discs are now showing a ubiquity of annular gap and ring substructures. Their identification and accurate characterization is critical to probing the physical processes responsible. We present Frankenstein (frank), an open source code that recovers axisymmetric disc structures at sub-beam resolution. By fitting the visibilities directly, the model reconstructs a disc's 1D radial brightness profile nonparametrically using a fast (<~1 min) Gaussian process. The code avoids limitations of current methods that obtain the radial brightness profile by either extracting it from the disc image via nonlinear deconvolution at the cost of reduced fit resolution, or by assumptions placed on the functional forms of disc structures to fit the visibilities parametrically. We use mock ALMA observations to quantify the method's intrinsic capability and its performance as a function of baseline-dependent signal-to-noise. Comparing the technique to profile extraction from a CLEAN image, we motivate how our fits accurately recover disc structures at a sub-beam resolution. Demonstrating the model's utility in fitting real high and moderate resolution observations, we conclude by proposing applications to address open questions on protoplanetary disc structure and processes., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures, accepted in MNRAS

When imaged at high-resolution, many proto-planetary discs show gaps and rings in their dust sub-mm continuum emission profile. These structures are widely considered to originate from local maxima in the gas pressure profile. The properties of the underlying gas structures are however unknown. In this paper we present a method to measure the dust-gas coupling $\alpha/St$ and the width of the gas pressure bumps affecting the dust distribution, applying high-precision techniques to extract the gas rotation curve from emission lines data-cubes. As a proof-of-concept, we then apply the method to two discs with prominent sub-structure, HD163296 and AS 209. We find that in all cases the gas structures are larger than in the dust, confirming that the rings are pressure traps. Although the grains are sufficiently decoupled from the gas to be radially concentrated, we find that the degree of coupling of the dust is relatively good ($\alpha/St \sim 0.1$). We can therefore reject scenarios in which the disc turbulence is very low and the dust has grown significantly. If we further assume that the dust grain sizes are set by turbulent fragmentation, we find high values of the $\alpha$ turbulent parameter ($\alpha \sim 10^{-2}$). Alternatively, solutions with smaller turbulence are still compatible with our analysis if another process is limiting grain growth. For HD163296, recent measurements of the disc mass suggest that this is the case if the grain size is 1mm. The interiors of giant planets remain poorly understood. Even for the planets in the Solar System, difficulties in observation lead to large uncertainties in the properties of planetary cores. Exoplanets that have undergone rare evolutionary processes provide a route to understanding planetary interiors. Planets found in and near the typically barren hot-Neptune 'desert' (a region in mass-radius space that contains few planets) have proved to be particularly valuable in this regard. These planets include HD149026b, which is thought to have an unusually massive core, and recent discoveries such as LTT9779b and NGTS-4b, on which photoevaporation has removed a substantial part of their outer atmospheres. Here we report observations of the planet TOI-849b, which has a radius smaller than Neptune's but an anomalously large mass of $39.1^{+2.7}_{-2.6}$ Earth masses and a density of $5.2^{+0.7}_{-0.8}$ grams per cubic centimetre, similar to Earth's. Interior structure models suggest that any gaseous envelope of pure hydrogen and helium consists of no more than $3.9^{+0.8}_{-0.9}$ per cent of the total planetary mass. The planet could have been a gas giant before undergoing extreme mass loss via thermal self-disruption or giant planet collisions, or it could have avoided substantial gas accretion, perhaps through gap opening or late formation. Although photoevaporation rates cannot account for the mass loss required to reduce a Jupiter-like gas giant, they can remove a small (a few Earth masses) hydrogen and helium envelope on timescales of several billion years, implying that any remaining atmosphere on TOI-849b is likely to be enriched by water or other volatiles from the planetary interior. Exoplanets orbiting M dwarfs present a valuable opportunity for their detection and atmospheric characterisation. This is evident from recent inferences of H$_2$O in such atmospheres, including that of the habitable-zone exoplanet K2-18b. With a bulk density between Earth and Neptune, K2-18b may be expected to possess a H/He envelope. However, the extent of such an envelope and the thermodynamic conditions of the interior remain unexplored. In the present work, we investigate the atmospheric and interior properties of K2-18b based on its bulk properties and its atmospheric transmission spectrum. We constrain the atmosphere to be H$_2$-rich with a H$_2$O volume mixing ratio of $0.02-14.8$%, consistent with previous studies, and find a depletion of CH$_4$ and NH$_3$, indicating chemical disequilibrium. We do not conclusively detect clouds/hazes in the observable atmosphere. We use the bulk parameters and retrieved atmospheric properties to constrain the internal structure and thermodynamic conditions in the planet. The constraints on the interior allow multiple scenarios between rocky worlds with massive H/He envelopes and water worlds with thin envelopes. We constrain the mass fraction of the H/He envelope to be $\lesssim 6$%; spanning $\lesssim 10^{-5}$ for a predominantly water world to $\sim6$% for a pure iron interior. The thermodynamic conditions at the surface of the H$_2$O layer range from the super-critical to liquid phases, with a range of solutions allowing for habitable conditions on K2-18b. The Sun shows a $\sim 10$% depletion in refractory elements relative to nearby solar twins. It has been suggested that this depletion is a signpost of planet formation. The exoplanet statistics are now good enough to show that the origin of this depletion does not arise from the sequestration of refractory material inside the planets themselves. This conclusion arises because most sun-like stars host close-in planetary systems that are on average more massive than the Sun's. Using evolutionary models for the protoplanetary discs that surrounded the young Sun and solar twins we demonstrate that the origin of the depletion likely arises due to the trapping of dust exterior to the orbit of a forming giant planet. In this scenario a forming giant planet opens a gap in the gas disc, creating a pressure trap. If the planet forms early enough, while the disc is still massive, the planet can trap $\gtrsim 100 $M$_\oplus$ of dust exterior to its orbit, preventing the dust from accreting onto the star in contrast to the gas. Forming giant planets can create refractory depletions of $\sim 5-15$%, with the larger values occurring for initial conditions that favour giant planet formation (e.g. more massive discs, that live longer). The incidence of solar-twins that show refractory depletion matches both the occurrence of giant planets discovered in exoplanet surveys and "transition" discs that show similar depletion patterns in the material that is accreting onto the star., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Protoplanetary discs form and evolve in a wide variety of stellar environments and are accordingly exposed to a wide range of ambient far ultraviolet (FUV) field strengths. Strong FUV fields are known to drive vigorous gaseous flows from the outer disc. In this paper we conduct the first systematic exploration of the evolution of the solid component of discs subject to external photoevaporation. We find that the main effect of photoevaporation is to reduce the reservoir of dust at large radii and this leads to more efficient subsequent depletion of the disc dust due to radial drift. Efficient radial drift means that photoevaporation causes no significant increase of the dust to gas ratio in the disc. We show that the disc lifetime in both dust and gas is strongly dependent on the level of the FUV background and that the relationship between these two lifetimes just depends on the Shakura-Sunyaev $\alpha$ parameter, with the similar lifetimes observed for gas and dust in discs pointing to higher $\alpha$ values ($\sim 10^{-2}$). On the other hand the distribution of observed discs in the plane of disc size versus flux at $850~\mu$m is better reproduced by lower $\alpha$ ($\sim 10^{-3}$). We find that photoevaporation does not assist rocky planet formation but need not inhibit mechanisms (such as pebble accretion at the water snow line) which can be effective sufficiently early in the disc's lifetime (i.e. well within a Myr)., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Collisional fragmentation is a ubiquitous phenomenon arising in a variety of astrophysical systems, from asteroid belts to debris and protoplanetary disks. Numerical studies of fragmentation typically rely on discretizing the size distribution of colliding objects into a large number N of bins in mass space, usually logarithmically spaced. A standard approach for redistributing the debris produced in collisions into the corresponding mass bins results in O(N^3) calculation, which leads to significant computational overhead when N is large. Here we formulate a more efficient explicit O(N^2) fragmentation algorithm, which works when the size spectrum of fragments produced in an individual collision has a self-similar shape with only a single characteristic mass scale (which can have arbitrary dependence on the energy and masses of colliding objects). Fragment size spectra used in existing fragmentation codes typically possess this property. We also show that our O(N^2) approach can be easily extended to work with non-self-similar fragment size distributions, for which we provide a worked example. This algorithm offers a substantial speedup of fragmentation calculations for large N> 100, even over the implicit methods, making it an attractive tool for studying collisionally evolving systems., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, submitted to AAS Journals

The presence of planets in binary systems poses interesting problems for planet formation theories, both in cases where planets must have formed in very compact discs around the individual stars and where they are located near the edge of the stable circumbinary region, where in situ formation is challenging. Dust dynamics is expected to play an important role in such systems, since dust trapping at the inner edge of circumbinary discs could aid in situ formation, but would simultaneously starve the circumstellar discs of the solid material needed to form planets. Here we investigate the dynamics of dust in binary systems using Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics. We find that all our simulations tend towards dust trapping in the circumbinary disc, but the timescale on which trapping begins depends on binary mass ratio ($q$) and eccentricity as well as the angular momentum of the infalling material. For $q \gtrsim 0.1$, we find that dust can initially accrete onto the circumstellar discs, but as the circumbinary cavity grows in radius, dust eventually becomes trapped in the circumbinary disc. For $q = 0.01$, we find that increasing the binary eccentricity increases the time required for dust trapping to begin. However, even this longer timescale is likely to be shorter than the planet formation timescale in the inner disc and is insufficient to explain the observed pre-transitional discs. Recent work has considered the problem of extending to the case of iterated belief change the so-called `Harper Identity' (HI), which defines single-shot contraction in terms of single-shot revision. The present paper considers the prospects of providing a similar extension of the Levi Identity (LI), in which the direction of definition runs the other way. We restrict our attention here to the three classic iterated revision operators--natural, restrained and lexicographic, for which we provide here the first collective characterisation in the literature, under the appellation of `elementary' operators. We consider two prima facie plausible ways of extending (LI). The first proposal involves the use of the rational closure operator to offer a `reductive' account of iterated revision in terms of iterated contraction. The second, which doesn't commit to reductionism, was put forward some years ago by Nayak et al. We establish that, for elementary revision operators and under mild assumptions regarding contraction, Nayak's proposal is equivalent to a new set of postulates formalising the claim that contraction by $\neg A$ should be considered to be a kind of `mild' revision by $A$. We then show that these, in turn, under slightly weaker assumptions, jointly amount to the conjunction of a pair of constraints on the extension of (HI) that were recently proposed in the literature. Finally, we consider the consequences of endorsing both suggestions and show that this would yield an identification of rational revision with natural revision. The composition of gas and solids in protoplanetary discs sets the composition of planets that form out of them. Recent chemical models have shown that the composition of gas and dust in discs evolves on Myr time-scales, with volatile species disappearing from the gas phase. However, discs evolve due to gas accretion and radial drift of dust on time-scales similar to these chemical time-scales. Here we present the first model coupling the chemical evolution in the disc mid-planes with the evolution of discs due to accretion and radial drift of dust. Our models show that transport will always overcome the depletion of CO$_2$ from the gas phase, and can also overcome the depletion of CO and CH$_4$ unless both transport is slow (viscous $\alpha \lesssim 10^{-3}$) and the ionization rate is high ($\zeta \approx 10^{-17}$). Including radial drift further enhances the abundances of volatile species because they are carried in on the surface of grains before evaporating left at their ice lines. Due to large differences in the abundances within 10 au for models with and without efficient radial drift, we argue that composition can be used to constrain models of planet formation via pebble accretion., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. A correlation between proto-planetary disc radii and sub-mm fluxes has been recently reported. In this Letter we show that the correlation is a sensitive probe of grain growth processes. Using models of grain growth and drift, we have shown in a companion paper that the observed disc radii trace where the dust grains are large enough to have a significant sub-mm opacity. We show that the observed correlation emerges naturally if the maximum grain size is set by radial drift, implying relatively low values of the viscous $\alpha$ parameter $ \lesssim 0.001$. In this case the relation has an almost universal normalisation, while if the grain size is set by fragmentation the flux at a given radius depends on the dust-to-gas ratio. We highlight two observational consequences of the fact that radial drift limits the grain size. The first is that the dust masses measured from the sub-mm could be overestimated by a factor of a few. The second is that the correlation should be present also at longer wavelengths (e.g. 3mm), with a normalisation factor that scales as the square of the observing frequency as in the optically thick case., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; accepted on MNRAS letters

Proto-planetary disc surveys conducted with ALMA are measuring disc radii in multiple star forming regions. The disc radius is a fundamental quantity to diagnose whether discs undergo viscous spreading, discriminating between viscosity or angular momentum removal by winds as drivers of disc evolution. Observationally, however, the sub-mm continuum emission is dominated by the dust, which also drifts inwards, complicating the picture. In this paper we investigate, using theoretical models of dust grain growth and radial drift, how the radii of dusty viscous proto-planetary discs evolve with time. Despite the existence of a sharp outer edge in the dust distribution, we find that the radius enclosing most of the dust $\textit{mass}$ increases with time, closely following the evolution of the gas radius. This behaviour arises because, although dust initially grows and drifts rapidly onto the star, the residual dust retained on Myr timescales is relatively well coupled to the gas. Observing the expansion of the dust disc requires using definitions based on high fractions of the disc $\textit{flux}$ (e.g. 95 per cent) and very long integrations with ALMA, because the dust grains in the outer part of the disc are small and have a low sub-mm opacity. We show that existing surveys lack the sensitivity to detect viscous spreading. The disc radii they measure do not trace the mass radius or the sharp outer edge in the dust distribution, but the outer limit of where the grains have significant sub-mm opacity. Recent observations show that rings and gaps are ubiquitous in protoplanetary discs. These features are often interpreted as being due to the presence of planets; however, the effect of planetary migration on the observed morphology has not been investigated hitherto. In this work we investigate whether multiwavelength mm/submm observations can detect signatures of planet migration, using 2D dusty hydrodynamic simulations to model the structures generated by migrating planets and synthesising ALMA continuum observations at 0.85 and 3 mm. We identify three possible morphologies for a migrating planet: a slowly migrating planet is associated with a single ring outside the planet's orbit, a rapidly migrating planet is associated with a single ring inside the planet's orbit while a planet migrating at intermediate speed generates one ring on each side of the planet's orbit. We argue that multiwavelength data can distinguish multiple rings produced by a migrating planet from other scenarios for creating multiple rings, such as multiple planets or discs with low viscosity. The signature of migration is that the outer ring has a lower spectral index, due to larger dust grains being trapped there. Of the recent ALMA observations revealing protoplanetary discs with multiple rings and gaps, we suggest that Elias 24 is the best candidate for a planet migrating in the intermediate speed regime., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have investigated the properties of gravito-turbulent discs in 3D using high-resolution shearing-box simulations. For large enough domain sizes, $L_y \gtrsim 60H$, the disc settles down into a quasi-steady state, showing no long term trends in properties or variation with box size. For smaller boxes, we find that the azimuthal wavelength of the dominant spiral modes are limited to the domain size. This is associated with a bursty behaviour that differs from the quasi-steady dynamics at larger sizes. We point out that a similar transition may be expected in global simulations at the point where the range of azimuthal wavelengths is limited by the finite disc size. This condition (i.e. when $60 H \sim 2 \pi R$, i.e. $H/R \sim 0.1$) correctly predicts the transition to bursty behaviour previously found in global simulations for disc-to-star mass ratios in excess of 0.25. We recover a transition in the dynamics from two- to three-dimensional behaviour, characterized by a turbulence that becomes more isotropic on small scales. This turbulence likely plays an important role in the evolution of dust in self-gravitating discs, potentially dominating the collision velocity for particles with Stokes number $< 1$. Finally, we consider the stability of gravito-turbulence against fragmentation, finding that discs which cool faster than a few dynamical times fragment immediately, supporting previous results. We also find hints of stochastic fragmentation at marginally longer cooling times, in which a fragment forms from a quasi-equilibrium state. The formation of planets occurs within protoplanetary disks surrounding young stars, resulting in perturbation of the gas and dust surface densities. Here, we report the first evidence of spatially resolved gas surface density ($\Sigma_{g}$) perturbation towards the AS~209 protoplanetary disk from the optically thin C$^{18}$O ($J=2-1$) emission. The observations were carried out at 1.3~mm with ALMA at a spatial resolution of about 0.3$\arcsec$ $\times$ 0.2$\arcsec$ (corresponding to $\sim$ 38 $\times$ 25 au). The C$^{18}$O emission shows a compact ($\le$60~au), centrally peaked emission and an outer ring peaking at 140~au, consistent with that observed in the continuum emission and, its azimuthally averaged radial intensity profile presents a deficit that is spatially coincident with the previously reported dust map. This deficit can only be reproduced with our physico-thermochemical disk model by lowering $\Sigma_{gas}$ by nearly an order of magnitude in the dust gaps. Another salient result is that contrary to C$^{18}$O, the DCO$^{+}$ ($J=3-2$) emission peaks between the two dust gaps. We infer that the best scenario to explain our observations (C$^{18}$O deficit and DCO$^{+}$ enhancement) is a gas perturbation due to forming-planet(s), that is commensurate with previous continuum observations of the source along with hydrodynamical simulations. Our findings confirm that the previously observed dust gaps are very likely due to perturbation of the gas surface density that is induced by a planet of at least 0.2~M$\rm_{Jupiter}$ in formation. Finally, our observations also show the potential of using CO isotopologues to probe the presence of saturn mass planet(s)., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ
