The advancement of robotic systems has revolutionized numerous industries, yet their operation often demands specialized technical knowledge, limiting accessibility for non-expert users. This paper introduces ROSA (Robot Operating System Agent), an AI-powered agent that bridges the gap between the Robot Operating System (ROS) and natural language interfaces. By leveraging state-of-the-art language models and integrating open-source frameworks, ROSA enables operators to interact with robots using natural language, translating commands into actions and interfacing with ROS through well-defined tools. ROSA's design is modular and extensible, offering seamless integration with both ROS1 and ROS2, along with safety mechanisms like parameter validation and constraint enforcement to ensure secure, reliable operations. While ROSA is originally designed for ROS, it can be extended to work with other robotics middle-wares to maximize compatibility across missions. ROSA enhances human-robot interaction by democratizing access to complex robotic systems, empowering users of all expertise levels with multi-modal capabilities such as speech integration and visual perception. Ethical considerations are thoroughly addressed, guided by foundational principles like Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, ensuring that AI integration promotes safety, transparency, privacy, and accountability. By making robotic technology more user-friendly and accessible, ROSA not only improves operational efficiency but also sets a new standard for responsible AI use in robotics and potentially future mission operations. This paper introduces ROSA's architecture and showcases initial mock-up operations in JPL's Mars Yard, a laboratory, and a simulation using three different robots. This paper presents the design and performance of a screw-propelled redundant serpentine robot. This robot comprises serially linked, identical modules, each incorporating an Archimedes' screw for propulsion and a universal joint (U-Joint) for orientation control. When serially chained, these modules form a versatile snake robot platform which enables the robot to reshape its body configuration for varying environments and gait patterns that would be typical of snake movement. Furthermore, the Archimedes' screws allow for novel omni-wheel drive-like motions by speed controlling their screw threads. This paper considers the mechanical and electrical design, as well as the software architecture for realizing a fully integrated system. The system includes 3$N$ actuators for $N$ segments, each controlled using a BeagleBone Black with a customized power-electronics cape, a 9 Degrees of Freedom (DoF) Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), and a scalable communication channel over ROS. The intended application for this robot is its use as an instrumentation mobility platform on terrestrial planets where the terrain may involve vents, caves, ice, and rocky surfaces. Energy absorbing materials, like foams used in protective equipment, are able to undergo large deformations under low stresses, reducing the incoming stress wave below an injury or damage threshold. They are typically effective in absorbing energy through plastic deformation or fragmentation. However, existing solutions are passive, only effective against specific threats and they are usually damaged after use. Here, we overcome these limitations designing energy absorbing materials that use architected lattices filled with granular particles. We use architected lattices to take advantage of controlled bending and buckling of members to enhance energy absorption. We actively control the negative pressure level within the lattices, to tune the jamming phase transition of the granular particles, inducing controllable energy absorption and recoverable deformations. Our system shows tunable stiffness and yield strength by over an order of magnitude, and reduces the transmitted impact stress at different levels by up to 40% compared to the passive lattice. The demonstrated adaptive energy absorbing system sees wide potential applications from personal protective equipment, vehicle safety systems to aerospace structures.

The subsurface of Mars has the potential to harbor existing deposits of liquid water, which are of great interest both scientifically (in the search for life) and as resources for future astronauts living on the red planet. However, the depth to a potential subsurface aquifer may be kilometers deep, which is well beyond what current surface or orbital approaches can survey while also confirming the unique signature for liquid water. Inspired by critical technology for exploring deep aquifers on Earth, we are developing the Transient H2O Reconnaissance (TH2OR) instrument at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). TH2OR operates on the principle of transient electromagnetics (TEM), which leverages induction and electromotive force to induce a current in a subsurface water body using a loop-shaped antenna that provides both transmit and receive functions when placed on the surface. On Mars, TEM may be even more effective given the relative dryness of the subsurface compared to a more conductive, saline, liquid, water body on Earth. However, to probe deep within the subsurface (below 5 km) a large enclosed antenna is needed – specifically, a 100-m diameter effective loop or a shape with roughly equivalent area that can transmit at low frequencies (kHz-Hz). The deployment of a large-scale structure on the surface is complicated by the fact that the transmit wire must be both lightweight and robust to contact with the surface. Further, TH2OR may be delivered to the surface by a non-mobile vehicle, so it is desired that the deployment can be activated from a static location. This paper provides an overview of the deployment trade study, focusing on our current, favored approach, using a projectile wire launcher. Building on past approaches in the literature, we have developed and fielded an Earth-based, gas-projectile prototype for launching a triangle-shaped antenna onto analogue terrain. Our results compare simulated launch performance to actual field tests conducted under Earth gravity and pressure conditions. We discuss how Earth performance maps to a prospective Mars deployment under reduced gravity and pressure. We also provide lessons learned and next steps towards the development of an integrated TH2OR instrument for finding water on Mars.

The use of rigid-flex printed circuit board (PCB) as primary structure has the potential to reduce the weight and volume of robotic systems. In the case of robotics for interplanetary exploration, these systems can leverage origamiinspired folding for increased mobility options and reduced storage volume. Folding rigid-flex PCB robotics can be constructed with rigid PCB connected by short Nomex fabric hinges coupled with flex PCB ribbon cables that permits enhanced system flexibility and energy dissipation to promote impact survivability. This paper presents a design methodology of rigidflex PCB systems with an emphasis on impact resistance. The design process considers solder joint adequacy, panel bending, and fracture using a finite element (FE) model. The proposed design methodology is developed using a case study with NASA JPL’s Pop-Up Folding Flat Explorer Robot (PUFFER). First, the finite-element (FE) modeling methodology is presented with consideration to both frequency and time-domain modeling applications, which include operational self-contact analysis and high impact scenarios. The time-domain impact modeling methodology utilizes hyperelastic material properties for the Nomex hinges. This modeling method is validated using image correlation of PUFFER drop tests. A flowchart is presented to guide users through a validated Abaqus modeling procedure for highly flexible rigid-flex systems. Next, a case study is presented in which PUFFER is subject to drop heights representative of falls into Lunar pits and then the design is refined for a more optimum impact performance. Finally, the results of the case study are used to inform a generalized design methodology for rigid-flex PCB robotics subject to high-impact loads with the considerations presented.

In this report, we present a robotic platform, the Shapeshifter, that allows multi-domain and redundant mobility on Saturn's moon Titan - and potentially other bodies with atmospheres. The Shapeshifter is a collection of simple and a affordable robotic units, called Cobots, comparable to personal palm-size quadcopters. By attaching and detaching with each other, multiple Cobots can shape-shift into novel structures, capable of (a) rolling on a at surface, to increase the traverse range, (b) flying in a flight array formation, and (c) swimming on or under liquid. A ground station, called the Home-base, complements the robotic platform, hosting science instrumentation and providing power to recharge the batteries of the Cobots. Our Phase I study had the objective of providing an initial assessment of the feasibility of the proposed robotic platform architecture, and in particular (a) to characterize the expected science return of a mission to the Sotra-Patera region on Titan; (b) to verify the mechanical and algorithmic feasibility of building a multi-agent platform capable of flying, docking, rolling and un-docking; (c) to evaluate the increased range and efficiency of rolling on Titan w.r.t to flying; (d) to define a case-study of a mission for the exploration of the cryovolcano Sotra-Patera on Titan, whose expected variety of geological features challenges conventional mobility platforms.

This paper explores the use of tensegrity structures as an end-to-end solution for descent, landing, and maneuvering through various depths of ocean worlds within the solar system. Ocean worlds are described as planetary bodies within the solar system that contain liquid bodies. They are key in the search for extra-terrestrial life and may provide insight into the development of the solar system. In this work, specific attention is paid to the exploration of the surface lakes of Titan. Analysis, test data, and literature review is used to validate aspects of this mission concept.

Systems and methods in accordance with embodiments of the invention implement flexible members that include integrated tools made from metallic glass-based materials. In one embodiment, a structure includes: a flexible member characterized by an elongated geometry and an integrated tool disposed at one end of the elongated geometry; where the flexible member includes a metallic glass-based material.

A repeatably reconfigurable robot, comprising at least two printed circuit board (PCB) rigid sections, at least one PCB flexible section coupled to the at least two PCB rigid sections, at least one wheel, hybrid wheel propeller, wheel and propeller, or hybrid wheel screw propeller rotatably coupled to at least one of the at least two PCB rigid sections and at least one actuator coupled to the at least two PCB rigid sections, wherein the at least one actuator folds and unfolds the repeatably reconfigurable robot.

Manipulators in accordance with various embodiments of the invention can be utilized to implement statically stable robots capable of both dexterous manipulation and versatile mobility. Manipulators in accordance with one embodiment of the invention include: an azimuth actuator; three elbow joints that each include two actuators that are offset to allow greater than 360 degree rotation of each joint; a first connecting structure that connects the azimuth actuator and a first of the three elbow joints; a second connecting structure that connects the first elbow joint and a second of the three elbow joints; a third connecting structure that connects the second elbow joint to a third of the three elbow joints; and an end-effector interface connected to the third of the three elbow joints.

Milli-watt Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) based on Radioisotope Heater Units (RHUs) could be an ideal power source for certain spacecraft that cannot use solar power due to large distances from the sun, or other environmental constraints, and where they enable or significantly enhance the ability of a mission to meet its scientific or operational goals. Various modular, compact RHU-based thermoelectric (TE) generator concepts developed or derived from current NASA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects satisfying this need have been investigated. These modular, compact and low mass power systems could support small, highly-mobile robotic exploration packages, and could be incorporated into different robotic package concepts, spacecraft or satellites. Current modular RPS design concepts with 40mW, 80mW and 120mW power levels use RHUs and Bi2Te3 TE converters. Skutterudites materials could be used in the future if new higher thermal energy output and higher temperature miniature heat sources were developed, for example, using technologies currently in the General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) used in higher electric power output RTGs. Small (a.k.a., “mice-like”) robotic packages could effectively utilize these RHU-driven power levels to accommodate crawling, climbing, monitoring, taking measurements, and communicating during long-term planetary missions aimed at gathering environmental and geologic data (i.e., over multiple decades). Waste heat from the cold side of the TE converter could also be directed toward the electronics and / or energy storage (e.g. batteries) to keep them within design temperature ranges. In addition to power generation and electronics / battery heating, the RHU / TE configuration could be designed to survive an external 500°C bake out procedure for critical spacecraft sterilization, environmental certification and planetary protection. Analytical studies have been performed to optimize various design configurations for power, mass, volume and robotic mobility. Specific power (mW/kg) and volumetric specific power (mW/cm3) characteristics of various design configurations will be presented and key conceptual design tradeoffs will be discussed. Hot- and cold-side thermal interfaces required to meet power and mass goals and associated design sensitivities will also be discussed. RHU / TE systems must overcome critical design challenges to survive high-g loadings in some robotic applications and we will examine the mass impacts required to satisfy various dynamic loading environments up to 10,000 g’s. Power can be generated for a minimum of 30 years or more using plutonium-238 dioxide heat sources (given that Pu-238 has an 87.7 year half-life) with some reduction in power as the heat source naturally degrades.
