We revisit the problem of polytypism in layered $\textit{MX}_2$ materials, with a view to reinterpreting the phase space accessible to this family. Our starting point is to develop a simple, constructive and compact label for the most commonly observed stacking arrangements that is similar to the Glazer notation used to label tilt systems in perovskites. The key advantage of this label in the context of $\textit{MX}_2$ systems is that it contains sufficient information to generate the corresponding stacking sequences uniquely. Using a related approach, we generate a Cartesian representation of the phase space containing all possible $\textit{MX}_2$ polytypes, with the most common structures appearing as limiting cases. We argue that variation in (e.g. composition, or temperature, or pressure) may allow navigation of this phase space along continuous paths. This interpretation is shown to be consistent with the structural evolution of stacking-faulted $\textit{MX}_2$ systems as a function of temperature and composition. Our study highlights the potential for controlling composition/structure/property relationships amongst layered $\textit{MX}_2$ materials in ways that might not previously have been obvious.

In the dense metal-organic framework Na[Mn(HCOO)$_3$], Mn$^{2+}$ ions ($S=\frac{5}{2}$) occupy the nodes of a `trillium' hyperkagome net. We show that this material exhibits a variety of behaviour characteristic of geometric frustration: the N\'eel transition is suppressed well below the characteristic magnetic interaction strength; short-range magnetic order persists far above the N\'eel temperature; and the magnetic susceptibility exhibits a pseudo-plateau at $\frac{1}{3}$-saturation magnetisation. We demonstrate that a simple nearest-neighbour Heisenberg antiferromagnet model accounts quantitatively for each observation, and hence Na[Mn(HCOO)$_3$] is the first experimental realisation of this model on the trillium net. We develop a mapping between this trillium model and that on the two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland lattice, and demonstrate how both link geometric frustration within the classical spin liquid regime to a strong magnetocaloric response at low fields.

57Fe-Mossbauer spectra of superconducting beta-FeSe, the Li/NH3 intercalate product and a subsequent sample of this intercalate treated with moist He gas have been measured in temperature range 4.7 - 290 K. A correlation is established between hyperfine parameters and critical temperature Tc in these phases. A strong increase of isomer shift upon intercalation is explained by a charge transfer from the Li/NH3 intercalate to the FeSe layers resulting in an increase of Tc up to 42 K. A significant decrease of the quadrupole splitting above 240 K has been attributed to diffusive motion of Li+ ions within the interlamellar space., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Hydrothermal synthesis is described of layered lithium iron selenide hydroxides Li1-xFex(OH)Fe1-ySe (x ~ 0.2; 0.02 < y < 0.15) with a wide range of iron site vacancy concentrations in the iron selenide layers. This iron vacancy concentration is revealed as the only significant compositional variable and as the key parameter controlling the crystal structure and the electronic properties. Single crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements are used to demonstrate that superconductivity at temperatures as high as 40 K is observed in the hydrothermally synthesised samples when the iron vacancy concentration is low (y < 0.05) and when the iron oxidation state is reduced slightly below +2, while samples with a higher vacancy concentration and a correspondingly higher iron oxidation state are not superconducting. The importance of combining a low iron oxidation state with a low vacancy concentration in the iron selenide layers is emphasised by the demonstration that reductive post-synthetic lithiation of the samples turns on superconductivity with critical temperatures exceeding 40 K by displacing iron atoms from the Li1-xFex(OH) reservoir layer to fill vacancies in the selenide layer, Comment: 7 pages supplementary material available from Journal, Inorganic Chemistry 2015

The recent discovery of high temperature superconductivity in a layered iron arsenide has led to an intensive search to optimize the superconducting properties of iron-based superconductors by changing the chemical composition of the spacer layer that is inserted between adjacent anionic iron arsenide layers. Until now, superconductivity has only been found in compounds with a cationic spacer layer consisting of metal ions: Li+, Na+, K+, Ba2+ or a PbO-type or perovskite-type oxide layer. Electronic doping is usually necessary to control the fine balance between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Superconductivity has also been reported in FeSe, which contains neutral layers similar in structure to those found in the iron arsenides but without the spacer layer. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of Lix(NH2)y(NH3)1-yFe2Se2 (x ~0.6 ; y ~ 0.2), with lithium ions, lithium amide and ammonia acting as the spacer layer, which exhibits superconductivity at 43(1) K, higher than in any FeSe-derived compound reported so far and four times higher at ambient pressure than the transition temperature, Tc, of the parent Fe1.01Se. We have determined the crystal structure using neutron powder diffraction and used magnetometry and muon-spin rotation data to determine the superconducting properties.
