Abstract

We investigate the construction and usage of mimetic operators in curvilinear staggered grids. Specifically, we extend the Corbino-Castillo operators so they can be utilized to solve problems in non-trivial geometries. We prove that the resulting curvilinear operators satisfy the discrete analog of the extended Gauss-Divergence theorem. In addition, we demonstrate energy and mass conservation in curvilinear coordinates for the acoustic wave equation. These findings are illustrated in two-dimensional and three-dimensional elliptic/hyperbolic equations and can be extended to other partial differential equations as well.

Abstract

We research into the clinical, biochemical and neuroimaging factors associated with the outcome of stroke patients to generate a predictive model using machine learning techniques for prediction of mortality and morbidity 3 months after admission. The dataset consisted of patients with ischemic stroke (IS) and non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) admitted to Stroke Unit of a European Tertiary Hospital prospectively registered. We identified the main variables for machine learning Random Forest (RF), generating a predictive model that can estimate patient mortality/morbidity. In conclusion, machine learning algorithms RF can be effectively used in stroke patients for long-term outcome prediction of mortality and morbidity., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

3. High Order Mimetic Symplectic Methods For Hamiltonian Systems

Abstract

Hamiltonian systems are known to conserve the Hamiltonian function, which describes the energy evolution over time. Obtaining a numerical spatio-temporal scheme that accurately preserves the discretized Hamiltonian function is often a challenge. In this paper, the use of high order mimetic spatial schemes is investigated for the numerical solution of Hamiltonian equations. The mimetic operators are based on developing high order discrete analogs of the vector calculus quantities divergence and gradient. The resulting high order operators preserve the properties of their continuum ones, and are therefore said to mimic properties of conservation laws and symmetries. Symplectic fourth order schemes are implemented in this paper for the time integration of Hamiltonian systems. A theoretical framework for the energy preserving nature of the resulting schemes is also presented, followed by numerical examples.

4. Research Productivity and International Collaboration: A Study of Ecuadorian Science

Abstract

Ecuador's research output relative to other Latin American countries has been low historically; however, over the last 10 years, the government has put various policies in place to help remedy this situation. This is an analysis of Ecuadorian research productivity from 2006 to 2015. The scientific productivity of Ecuador has increased 5.16 times over the past years, exceeding Latin American growth. Over 80% of Ecuadorian publications include international collaboration mainly with the United States and some European and Latin American countries.

Abstract

The MWTP: Monterrey Weather, Traffic and Pollution Database contains a collection of historic weather conditions, and recent traffic and air pollution data of the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Mexico. Collected data includes: temperature, humidity, raining conditions, wind speed, travel distance, travel time, PM2.5, PM10, O3, among many others. As of February 2017, the MWTP database contained more than 4 million records of weather data, more than 700 thousand records of traffic data and around 57 thousand of air pollution measurements. Here, it is described how the data is been collected and structured into a databased, so it can be used for statistical and geospatial analysis of the Monterrey area., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 6 Tables

6. Research Impact and International Collaboration: A Study of Ecuadorian Science

Abstract

Scientific performance in Ecuador has been traditionally low; however, in recent years, government has put various policies in place aimed at improving outcomes. This is an analysis of scientific impact of Ecuadorian publications using bibliometric tools for the 2006-2015 period. Impact of publications produced by Ecuadorian researchers is low; however, it highly increased with international collaboration mostly from North America and Europe, what allowed the publication of articles in journals of high level and prestige.

9. Object picture, quasinormal modes and late time tails of fermion perturbations in stringy black hole with U(1) charges

Abstract

The aim of the present report is to study massless fermion perturbations outside five-dimensional stringy black holes with U(1) charges. The Dirac equation was numerically solved to obtain the time profiles for the evolving fermion fields, and the quasinormal frequencies at intermediate times are computed by numerical Prony fitting and semianalytical WKB expansion at sixth order. We also computed numerically the late-time power law decay factors, showing that there are in correspondence with previously reported results for the case of boson fields in higher dimensional odd space-times. The dependence of quasinormal frequencies with U(1) compactification charges are studied, and the stability of this class of higher dimensional black holes under fermion perturbations is established., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures
