A simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided communication system is investigated. A robust joint beamforming design problem under the imperfect channel state information (CSI) is formulated to maximize the weighted sum of the Jain's fairness index and the normalized system sum rate. To solve this non-convex problem, an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed, which leverages the S-Procedure, successive convex approximation (SCA), and semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Simulation results demonstrate that with proposed algorithm: 1) various trade-offs between sum rate and user fairness can be achieved; 2) a larger trade-off region can be achieved by adopting STAR-RIS compared to conventional RIS; and 3) the performance degradation caused by imperfect CSI is less than 7% with our proposed robust beamforming approach., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems enhance large language models (LLMs) by integrating external knowledge sources, enabling more accurate and contextually relevant responses tailored to user queries. However, these systems remain vulnerable to corpus poisoning attacks that can significantly degrade LLM performance through the injection of malicious content. To address these challenges, we propose TrustRAG, a robust framework that systematically filters compromised and irrelevant contents before they are retrieved for generation. Our approach implements a two-stage defense mechanism: At the first stage, it employs K-means clustering to identify potential attack patterns in retrieved documents using cosine similarity and ROUGE metrics as guidance, effectively isolating suspicious content. Secondly, it performs a self-assessment which detects malicious documents and resolves discrepancies between the model's internal knowledge and external information. TrustRAG functions as a plug-and-play, training-free module that integrates seamlessly with any language model, whether open or closed-source. In addition, TrustRAG maintains high contextual relevance while strengthening defenses against corpus poisoning attacks. Through extensive experimental validation, we demonstrate that TrustRAG delivers substantial improvements in retrieval accuracy, efficiency, and attack resistance compared to existing approaches across multiple model architectures and datasets. Data centers have become one of the major energy consumers, making their low-carbon operations critical to achieving global carbon neutrality. Although distributed data centers have the potential to reduce costs and emissions through cooperation, they are facing challenges due to uncertainties. This paper proposes an online approach to co-optimize the workload, energy, and temperature strategies across distributed data centers, targeting minimal total cost, controlled carbon emissions, and adherence to operational constraints. Lyapunov optimization technique is adopted to derive a parametric real-time strategy that accommodates uncertainties in workload demands, ambient temperature, electricity prices, and carbon intensities, without requiring prior knowledge of their distributions. A theoretical upper bound for the optimality gap is derived, based on which a linear programming problem is proposed to optimize the strategy parameters, enhancing performance while ensuring operational constraints. Speech brain-computer interfaces aim to decipher what a person is trying to say from neural activity alone, restoring communication to people with paralysis who have lost the ability to speak intelligibly. The Brain-to-Text Benchmark '24 and associated competition was created to foster the advancement of decoding algorithms that convert neural activity to text. Here, we summarize the lessons learned from the competition ending on June 1, 2024 (the top 4 entrants also presented their experiences in a recorded webinar). The largest improvements in accuracy were achieved using an ensembling approach, where the output of multiple independent decoders was merged using a fine-tuned large language model (an approach used by all 3 top entrants). Performance gains were also found by improving how the baseline recurrent neural network (RNN) model was trained, including by optimizing learning rate scheduling and by using a diphone training objective. Improving upon the model architecture itself proved more difficult, however, with attempts to use deep state space models or transformers not yet appearing to offer a benefit over the RNN baseline. The benchmark will remain open indefinitely to support further work towards increasing the accuracy of brain-to-text algorithms.

Given that visual foundation models (VFMs) are trained on extensive datasets but often limited to 2D images, a natural question arises: how well do they understand the 3D world? With the differences in architecture and training protocols (i.e., objectives, proxy tasks), a unified framework to fairly and comprehensively probe their 3D awareness is urgently needed. Existing works on 3D probing suggest single-view 2.5D estimation (e.g., depth and normal) or two-view sparse 2D correspondence (e.g., matching and tracking). Unfortunately, these tasks ignore texture awareness, and require 3D data as ground-truth, which limits the scale and diversity of their evaluation set. To address these issues, we introduce Feat2GS, which readout 3D Gaussians attributes from VFM features extracted from unposed images. This allows us to probe 3D awareness for geometry and texture via novel view synthesis, without requiring 3D data. Additionally, the disentanglement of 3DGS parameters - geometry ($\boldsymbol{x}, \alpha, \Sigma$) and texture ($\boldsymbol{c}$) - enables separate analysis of texture and geometry awareness. Under Feat2GS, we conduct extensive experiments to probe the 3D awareness of several VFMs, and investigate the ingredients that lead to a 3D aware VFM. Building on these findings, we develop several variants that achieve state-of-the-art across diverse datasets. This makes Feat2GS useful for probing VFMs, and as a simple-yet-effective baseline for novel-view synthesis. Recently, Large Language Models (LLMs) have undergone a significant transformation, marked by a rapid rise in both their popularity and capabilities. Leading this evolution are proprietary LLMs like GPT-4 and GPT-o1, which have captured widespread attention in the AI community due to their remarkable performance and versatility. Simultaneously, open-source LLMs, such as LLaMA and Mistral, have made great contributions to the ever-increasing popularity of LLMs due to the ease to customize and deploy the models across diverse applications. Although open-source LLMs present unprecedented opportunities for innovation and research, the commercialization of LLMs has raised concerns about transparency, reproducibility, and safety. Many open-source LLMs fail to meet fundamental transparency requirements by withholding essential components like training code and data, and some use restrictive licenses whilst claiming to be "open-source," which may hinder further innovations on LLMs. To mitigate this issue, we introduce Moxin 7B, a fully open-source LLM developed in accordance with the Model Openness Framework (MOF), a ranked classification system that evaluates AI models based on model completeness and openness, adhering to principles of open science, open source, open data, and open access. Our model achieves the highest MOF classification level of "open science" through the comprehensive release of pre-training code and configurations, training and fine-tuning datasets, and intermediate and final checkpoints. Experiments show that our model achieves superior performance in zero-shot evaluation compared with popular 7B models and performs competitively in few-shot evaluation.

A simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided near-field multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication framework is proposed. A weighted sum rate maximization problem for the joint optimization of the active beamforming at the base station (BS) and the transmission/reflection-coefficients (TRCs) at the STAR-RIS is formulated. Vacuum polarization is numerically investigated for the interaction between a GeV electron beam and a counterpropagating ultraintense laser pulse in the quantum radiation dominated-regime (QRDR). We identify a signal of vacuum polarization in pair density using a straightforward one-stage setup, circumventing the challenge of preparations of highly polarized probe photons or precise measurements of photon polarization. In our scheme, most electrons are scattered in the direction of laser propagation while emitting substantial linearly polarized gamma photons. These photons undergo vacuum birefringence and dichroism before decaying into electron-positron pairs via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process. We demonstrate that vacuum dichroism enhances the purity of linear polarization, which suppresses the overall yield of electron-positron pairs and allows energetic photons to penetrate deeper into the laser pulse. The pairs produced by these energetic photons are more likely to be deflected into small-angle regions rather than being reflected, leading to an enhancement of pair yield in forward scattering. The difference in positron yield may have potential applications in measuring vacuum polarization effect in future laser-particle experiments.

A simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided integrated sensing, computing, and communication (ISCC) Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) framework is proposed. Specifically, the full-duplex (FD) base station (BS) simultaneously receives the offloading signals from decision robots (DRs) and carries out target robot (TR) sensing. A computation rate maximization problem is formulated to optimize the sensing and receive beamformers at the BS and the STAR-RIS coefficients under the BS power constraint, the sensing signal-to-noise ratio constraint, and STAR-RIS coefficients constraints. The alternating optimization (AO) method is adopted to solve the proposed optimization problem. With fixed STAR-RIS coefficients, the sub-problem with respect to sensing and receiving beamformer at the BS is tackled with the weighted minimum mean-square error method. Given beamformers at the BS, the sub-problem with respect to STAR-RIS coefficients is tacked with the penalty method and successive convex approximation method. The overall algorithm is guaranteed to converge to at least a stationary point of the computation rate maximization problem. Our simulation results validate that the proposed STAR-RIS aided ISCC IoRT system can enhance the sum computation rate compared with the benchmark schemes.

The development of sixth-generation (6G) communication technologies is confronted with the significant challenge of spectrum resource shortage. To alleviate this issue, we propose a novel simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio (CR) system. Specifically, the underlying secondary network in the proposed CR system reuses the same frequency resources occupied by the primary network with the help of the STAR-RIS. The secondary network sum rate maximization problem is first formulated for the STAR-RIS aided MIMO CR system. The adoption of STAR-RIS necessitates an intricate beamforming design for the considered system due to its large number of coupled coefficients. The block coordinate descent method is employed to address the formulated optimization problem. In each iteration, the beamformers at the secondary base station (SBS) are optimized by solving a quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP) problem. Concurrently, the STAR-RIS passive beamforming problem is resolved using tailored algorithms designed for the two phase-shift models: 1) For the independent phase-shift model, a successive convex approximation-based algorithm is proposed. 2) For the coupled phase-shift model, a penalty dual decomposition-based algorithm is conceived, in which the phase shifts and amplitudes of the STAR-RIS elements are optimized using closed-form solutions. Simulation results show that: 1) The proposed STAR-RIS aided CR communication framework can significantly enhance the sum rate of the secondary system. 2) The coupled phase-shift model results in limited performance degradation compared to the independent phase-shift model.

The stochastic nature of renewable energy and load demand requires efficient and accurate solutions for probabilistic optimal power flow (OPF). Quantum neural networks (QNNs), which combine quantum computing and machine learning, offer computational advantages in approximating OPF by effectively handling high-dimensional data. However, adversaries with access to non-private OPF solutions can potentially infer sensitive load demand patterns, raising significant privacy concerns. To address this issue, we propose a privacy-preserving QNN model for probabilistic OPF approximation. By incorporating Gaussian noise into the training process, the learning algorithm achieves ($\varepsilon, \delta$)-differential privacy with theoretical guarantees. Moreover, we develop a strongly entangled quantum state to enhance the nonlinearity expressiveness of the QNN. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully prevents privacy leakage without compromising the statistical properties of probabilistic OPF. The power of quantum random number generation is more than just the ability to create truly random numbers$\unicode{x2013}$it can also enable self-testing, which allows the user to verify the implementation integrity of certain critical quantum components with minimal assumptions. In this work, we develop and implement a self-testing quantum random number generator (QRNG) chipset capable of generating 15.33 Mbits of certifiable randomness in each run (an expansion rate of $5.11\times 10^{-4}$ at a repetition rate of 10 Mhz). The chip design is based on a highly loss-and-noise tolerant measurement-device-independent protocol, where random coherent states encoded using quadrature phase shift keying are used to self-test the quantum homodyne detection unit: well-known to be challenging to characterise in practice. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) present significant challenges for early and accurate diagnosis. While cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is the gold standard for assessing cardiac function and diagnosing CVDs, its high cost and technical complexity limit accessibility. In contrast, electrocardiography (ECG) offers promise for large-scale early screening. This study introduces CardiacNets, an innovative model that enhances ECG analysis by leveraging the diagnostic strengths of CMR through cross-modal contrastive learning and generative pretraining. CardiacNets serves two primary functions: (1) it evaluates detailed cardiac function indicators and screens for potential CVDs, including coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, pericarditis, heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, using ECG input; and (2) it enhances interpretability by generating high-quality CMR images from ECG data. We train and validate the proposed CardiacNets on two large-scale public datasets (the UK Biobank with 41,519 individuals and the MIMIC-IV-ECG comprising 501,172 samples) as well as three private datasets (FAHZU with 410 individuals, SAHZU with 464 individuals, and QPH with 338 individuals), and the findings demonstrate that CardiacNets consistently outperforms traditional ECG-only models, substantially improving screening accuracy. Furthermore, the generated CMR images provide valuable diagnostic support for physicians of all experience levels. Shared energy storage systems (ESS) present a promising solution to the temporal imbalance between energy generation from renewable distributed generators (DGs) and the power demands of prosumers. However, as DG penetration rates rise, spatial energy imbalances become increasingly significant, necessitating the integration of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading within the shared ESS framework. Two key challenges emerge in this context: the absence of effective mechanisms and the greater difficulty for privacy protection due to increased data communication. This research proposes a capacity renting framework for shared ESS considering P2P energy trading of prosumers. In the proposed framework, prosumers can participate in P2P energy trading and rent capacities from shared ESS. A generalized Nash game is formulated to model the trading process and the competitive interactions among prosumers, and the variational equilibrium of the game is proved to be equivalent to the optimal solution of a quadratic programming (QP) problem. To address the privacy protection concern, the problem is solved using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with the Paillier cryptosystem. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate the impact of P2P energy trading on the shared ESS framework and validate the effectiveness of the proposed privacy-preserving algorithm.

Imitation learning, e.g., diffusion policy, has been proven effective in various robotic manipulation tasks. However, extensive demonstrations are required for policy robustness and generalization. To reduce the demonstration reliance, we leverage spatial symmetry and propose ET-SEED, an efficient trajectory-level SE(3) equivariant diffusion model for generating action sequences in complex robot manipulation tasks. Further, previous equivariant diffusion models require the per-step equivariance in the Markov process, making it difficult to learn policy under such strong constraints. We theoretically extend equivariant Markov kernels and simplify the condition of equivariant diffusion process, thereby significantly improving training efficiency for trajectory-level SE(3) equivariant diffusion policy in an end-to-end manner. We evaluate ET-SEED on representative robotic manipulation tasks, involving rigid body, articulated and deformable object. Experiments demonstrate superior data efficiency and manipulation proficiency of our proposed method, as well as its ability to generalize to unseen configurations with only a few demonstrations. The growing uncertainty from renewable power and electricity demand brings significant challenges to unit commitment (UC). While various advanced forecasting and optimization methods have been developed to predict better and address this uncertainty, most previous studies treat forecasting and optimization as separate tasks. This separation can lead to suboptimal results due to misalignment between the objectives of the two tasks. To overcome this challenge, we propose a robust UC framework that integrates the forecasting and optimization processes while ensuring statistical guarantees. In the forecasting stage, we combine multiple predictions derived from diverse data sources and methodologies for an improved prediction, aiming to optimize the UC performance. In the optimization stage, the combined prediction is used to construct an uncertainty set with statistical guarantees, based on which the robust UC model is formulated. The optimal robust UC solution provides feedback to refine the forecasting process, forming a closed loop. To solve the proposed integrated forecasting-optimization framework efficiently and effectively, we develop a neural network-based surrogate model for acceleration and introduce a reshaping method for the uncertainty set based on the optimization result to reduce conservativeness. The definition of heat current operator for systems for non-pairwise additive interactions and its impact on related lattice thermal conductivity ($\kappa_{L}$) via molecular dynamics simulation (MD) are ambiguous and controversial when migrating from conventional empirical potential models to machine learning potential (MLP) models. Empirical model descriptions are often limited to three- to four-body interaction while a sophisticated representation of the many-body physics could be resembled in MLPs. Herein, we study and compare the significance of many-body interaction to the heat current computation in one of the most popular MLP models, the Moment Tensor Potential (MTP). Non-equilibrium MD simulations and equilibrium MD simulations among four different materials, $PbTe$, amorphous $Sc_{0.2}Sb_{2}Te_{3}$, graphene, and $BAs$, were performed. We found inconsistency between the simulation thermostat and its implemented heat current operator in our non-equilibrium MD results which violate law of energy conservation and suggest a need for revision. We revisit the virial stress tensor expression within the calculator and identified the lack of a generalised many-body heat current description in it. We uncover the influence of the modified heat current formula that could alter the $\kappa_{L}$ results 29% to 64% using the equilibrium MD computational approach. Our work demonstrates the importance of a many-body description during thermal analysis in MD simulations when MLPs are in concern. To incorporate the gravitational influence of Kuiper belt objects (KBOs) in planetary ephemerides, uniform-ring models are commonly employed. In this paper, for representing the KBO population residing in Neptune's 2:3 mean motion resonance (MMR), known as the Plutinos, we introduce a three-arc model by considering their resonant characteristics. Each `arc' refers to a segment of the uniform ring and comprises an appropriate number of point masses. Then the total perturbation of Plutinos is numerically measured by the change in the Sun-Neptune distance ($\Delta d_{SN}$). We conduct a comprehensive investigation to take into account various azimuthal and radial distributions associated with the resonant amplitudes ($A$) and eccentricities ($e$) of Plutinos, respectively. The results show that over a 100-year period: (1) at the smallest $e=0.05$, the Sun-Neptune distance change $\Delta d_{SN}$ caused by Plutinos decreases significantly as $A$ reduces. It can deviate from the value of $\Delta d_{SN}$ obtained in the ring model by approximately 100 km; (2) as $e$ increases in the medium range of 0.1-0.2, the difference in $\Delta d_{SN}$ between the arc and ring models becomes increasingly significant; (3) at the largest $e\gtrsim0.25$, $\Delta d_{SN}$ can approach zero regardless of $A$, and the arc and ring models exhibit a substantial difference in $\Delta d_{SN}$, reaching up to 170 km. Then the applicability of our three-arc model is further verified by comparing it to the perturbations induced by observed Plutinos on the positions of both Neptune and Saturn. The massive population election simulation aims to model the preferences of specific groups in particular election scenarios. It has garnered significant attention for its potential to forecast real-world social trends. Traditional agent-based modeling (ABM) methods are constrained by their ability to incorporate complex individual background information and provide interactive prediction results. In this paper, we introduce ElectionSim, an innovative election simulation framework based on large language models, designed to support accurate voter simulations and customized distributions, together with an interactive platform to dialogue with simulated voters. We present a million-level voter pool sampled from social media platforms to support accurate individual simulation. We also introduce PPE, a poll-based presidential election benchmark to assess the performance of our framework under the U.S. presidential election scenario. High-energy vortex $\gamma$ photons have significant applications in many fields, however, their generation and angular momentum manipulation are still great challenges. Here, we first investigated the generation of vortex $\gamma$ photons with controllable spin and orbital angular momenta via nonlinear Compton scattering of two-color counter-rotating circularly polarized (CP) laser fields. The radiation probability of vortex photons are calculated using the semiclassical approach that resolves angular momenta of emitted photons. We find that the angular momenta transferred to emitted photons are determined by the dominating photon absorption channel, leading to a structured spectrum with alternations in chirality and twisted direction. By tuning the relative intensity ratio of the two-color CP laser fields, the polarization and vortex charge of the emitted $\gamma$ photons can be controlled, enabling the generation of circularly polarized vortex $\gamma$ photons with a user-defined polarization and topological charge, which may have a plenty of applications in nuclear physics, astrophysics, particle physics, etc.

Innovation and development of renewable energy devices are crucial for reaching a sustainable and environmentally conscious future. This work focuses on the development of a new type of renewable energy devices in the context of Smart Garden at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which aims to design a bladeless wind turbine for urban areas, addressing the pressing need for clean energy locally and globally. Traditional wind turbines have been widely adopted in recent decades, while bladeless wind turbines have also displayed their advantages and uniqueness in urban areas. A Vortex Bladeless Wind Turbine (VBWT) is modeled by using Fusion 360 to optimize wind energy generation in urban settings with limited space and buildings-dominated landscape. Optimal parameters of the VBWT were obtained by comparing the results of drag force, lift force and deflection, via the simulations in Ansys. Hardware of proposed bladeless wind turbine has been assembled and developed by 3-dimensional printing. Additional tests and adjustments on hardware further improve the performance of the developed wind turbine. This paper proposes a differentially private energy trading mechanism for prosumers in peer-to-peer (P2P) markets, offering provable privacy guarantees while approaching the Nash equilibrium with nearly socially optimal efficiency. We first model the P2P energy trading as a (generalized) Nash game and prove the vulnerability of traditional distributed algorithms to privacy attacks through an adversarial inference model. To address this challenge, we develop a privacy-preserving Nash equilibrium seeking algorithm incorporating carefully calibrated Laplacian noise. We prove that the proposed algorithm achieves $\epsilon$-differential privacy while converging in expectation to the Nash equilibrium with a suitable stepsize. Numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate the algorithm's robustness against privacy attacks, convergence behavior, and optimality compared to the non-private solution. Humanoid robots are designed to perform diverse loco-manipulation tasks. However, they face challenges due to their high-dimensional and unstable dynamics, as well as the complex contact-rich nature of the tasks. Model-based optimal control methods offer precise and systematic control but are limited by high computational complexity and accurate contact sensing. On the other hand, reinforcement learning (RL) provides robustness and handles high-dimensional spaces but suffers from inefficient learning, unnatural motion, and sim-to-real gaps. To address these challenges, we introduce Opt2Skill, an end-to-end pipeline that combines model-based trajectory optimization with RL to achieve robust whole-body loco-manipulation. We generate reference motions for the Digit humanoid robot using differential dynamic programming (DDP) and train RL policies to track these trajectories. Our results demonstrate that Opt2Skill outperforms pure RL methods in both training efficiency and task performance, with optimal trajectories that account for torque limits enhancing trajectory tracking. We successfully transfer our approach to real-world applications.

The 2023 Big ANN Challenge, held at NeurIPS 2023, focused on advancing the state-of-the-art in indexing data structures and search algorithms for practical variants of Approximate Nearest Neighbor (ANN) search that reflect the growing complexity and diversity of workloads. Unlike prior challenges that emphasized scaling up classical ANN search ~\cite{DBLP:conf/nips/SimhadriWADBBCH21}, this competition addressed filtered search, out-of-distribution data, sparse and streaming variants of ANNS. Participants developed and submitted innovative solutions that were evaluated on new standard datasets with constrained computational resources. Electric vehicles (EVs) can be aggregated to offer flexibility services to the power system. However, the rapid growth in EV adoption leads to increased grid-level carbon emissions due to higher EV charging demand, complicating grid decarbonization efforts. Quantifying and managing EV flexibility while controlling carbon emissions is crucial. This paper introduces a methodology for carbon-aware quantification of real-time aggregate EV power flexibility. An offline model is first developed to determine the upper and lower bounds of the EV flexibility region. To address uncertainties in EV charging behaviors and grid carbon intensity, we propose a carbon-aware online optimization algorithm based on Lyapunov optimization, incorporating a queue model to capture system dynamics. To enhance EV flexibility, we integrate dispatch signals from the system operator into the queue update through a two-stage disaggregation process. The proposed approach is prediction-free and adaptable to various uncertainties. Additionally, the maximum charging delay for EV charging tasks is theoretically bounded by a constant, and carbon emissions are effectively controlled. Hosting capacity (HC) assessment for electric vehicles (EVs) is crucial for EV secure integration and reliable power system operation. Existing methods primarily focus on a long-term perspective (e.g., system planning), and consider the EV charging demands as scalar values, which introduces inaccuracies in real-time operations due to the inherently stochastic nature of EVs. In this regard, this paper proposes a real-time HC assessment method for EVs through a three-step process, involving real-time probabilistic forecasting, risk analysis and probabilistic optimization. Specifically, we conduct real-time probabilistic forecasting to capture the stochastic nature of EV charging demands across multiple charging stations by performing deterministic forecasting and fitting the distribution of forecasting errors. The deterministic forecasting is conducted using an adaptive spatio-temporal graph convolutional network (ASTGCN). ASTGCN leverages adaptive spatial feature extraction, attention-based temporal feature extraction, and second-order graph representation to improve the forecasting performance. Subsequently, based on the probabilistic forecasting of EV charging demands, we conduct real-time risk analysis and operational boundary identification by utilizing probabilistic power flow calculations to assess potential violations of secure operation constraints. Furthermore, we present the formulation of real-time HC of EVs considering expected satisfaction of stochastic EV charging demands, and propose an optimization model for real-time HC assessment of EVs. Humans perceive and interact with the world with the awareness of equivariance, facilitating us in manipulating different objects in diverse poses. For robotic manipulation, such equivariance also exists in many scenarios. For example, no matter what the pose of a drawer is (translation, rotation and tilt), the manipulation strategy is consistent (grasp the handle and pull in a line). The glassy thermal conductivities observed in crystalline inorganic perovskites such as Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_6$Cl$_3$ is perplexing and lacking theoretical explanations. Here, we first experimentally measure such its thermal transport behavior from 20~K to 300~K, after synthesizing Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_6$Cl$_3$ single crystals. Using path-integral molecular dynamics simulations driven by machine learning potentials, we reveal that Cs$_3$Bi$_2$I$_6$Cl$_3$ has large lattice distortions at low temperatures, which may be related to the large atomic size mismatch. Employing the Wigner formulation of thermal transport, we reproduce the experimental thermal conductivities based on lattice-distorted structures. This study thus provides a framework for predicting and understanding glassy thermal transport in materials with strong lattice disorder.

Honeycomb cobalt oxides containing 3$\it{d}$ Co$^{2+}$ ions might realize frustrated magnetism and novel quantum phases. Among candidate materials, Na$_{3}$Co$_{2}$SbO$_{6}$ stands out for its distorted honeycomb lattice and significant in-plane anisotropy, motivating vector-field tuning inside the honeycomb plane. Here we use thermal transport down to the mK regime to study twin-free crystals of Na$_{3}$Co$_{2}$SbO$_{6}$ subject to in-plane vector fields. We find that the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ never exceeds the heat-transport capability of phonons, rendering its suppression primarily due to phonon scattering off magnetic excitations and/or domain boundaries. The increasing electric vehicle (EV) adoption challenges the energy management of charging stations (CSs) due to the large number of EVs and the underlying uncertainties. Moreover, the carbon footprint of CSs is growing significantly due to the rising charging power demand. This makes it important for CSs to properly manage their energy usage and ensure their carbon footprint stay within their carbon emission quotas. This paper proposes a two-stage online algorithm for this purpose, considering the different time scales of energy management and carbon trading. In the first stage, the CS characterizes the real-time aggregate EV power flexibility, in terms of upper and lower bounds on the total charging power, by a Lyapunov optimization-based online algorithm. In the second stage, the CS co-optimizes energy management and carbon trading, with EV charging power chosen within the aggregate flexibility region provided by the first stage. A generalized battery model is proposed to capture the dynamic carbon footprint changes and carbon trading. A virtual carbon queue is designed to develop an online algorithm for the second stage, which can ensure the carbon footprint of CS be within its carbon emission quota and its total operation cost is nearly offline optimal. Ultra-relativistic electrons with energies greater than or equal to two megaelectron-volt (MeV) pose a major radiation threat to spaceborne electronics, and thus specifying those highly energetic electrons has a significant meaning to space weather communities. Here we report the latest progress in developing our predictive model for MeV electrons in the outer radiation belt. The new version, primarily driven by electron measurements made along medium-Earth-orbits (MEO), is called PREdictive MEV Electron (PreMevE)-MEO model that nowcasts ultra-relativistic electron flux distributions across the whole outer belt. Model inputs include above 2 MeV electron fluxes observed in MEOs by a fleet of GPS satellites as well as electrons measured by one Los Alamos satellite in the geosynchronous orbit. We developed an innovative Sparse Multi-Inputs Latent Ensemble NETwork (SmileNet) which combines convolutional neural networks with transformers, and we used long-term in-situ electron data from NASA's Van Allen Probes mission to train, validate, optimize, and test the model.It is shown that PreMevE-MEO can provide hourly nowcasts with high model performance efficiency and high correlation with observations.This prototype PreMevE-MEO model demonstrates the feasibility of making high-fidelity predictions driven by observations from longstanding space infrastructure in MEO, thus has great potential of growing into an invaluable space weather operational warning tool., Comment: 18 pages (double-spaced in Word format) with 9 figures; manuscript submitted to Space Weather Journal under review

The advancements in embodied AI are increasingly enabling robots to tackle complex real-world tasks, such as household manipulation. However, the deployment of robots in these environments remains constrained by the lack of comprehensive bimanual-mobile robot manipulation data that can be learned. Existing datasets predominantly focus on single-arm manipulation tasks, while the few dual-arm datasets available often lack mobility features, task diversity, comprehensive sensor data, and robust evaluation metrics; they fail to capture the intricate and dynamic nature of household manipulation tasks that bimanual-mobile robots are expected to perform. To overcome these limitations, we propose BRMData, a Bimanual-mobile Robot Manipulation Dataset specifically designed for household applications. BRMData encompasses 10 diverse household tasks, including single-arm and dual-arm tasks, as well as both tabletop and mobile manipulations, utilizing multi-view and depth-sensing data information. Moreover, BRMData features tasks of increasing difficulty, ranging from single-object to multi-object grasping, non-interactive to human-robot interactive scenarios, and rigid-object to flexible-object manipulation, closely simulating real-world household applications. Additionally, we introduce a novel Manipulation Efficiency Score (MES) metric to evaluate both the precision and efficiency of robot manipulation methods in household tasks. We thoroughly evaluate and analyze the performance of advanced robot manipulation learning methods using our BRMData, aiming to drive the development of bimanual-mobile robot manipulation technologies. Offline reinforcement learning (RL) aims to learn optimal policies from previously collected datasets. Recently, due to their powerful representational capabilities, diffusion models have shown significant potential as policy models for offline RL issues. However, previous offline RL algorithms based on diffusion policies generally adopt weighted regression to improve the policy. This approach optimizes the policy only using the collected actions and is sensitive to Q-values, which limits the potential for further performance enhancement. To this end, we propose a novel preferred-action-optimized diffusion policy for offline RL. In particular, an expressive conditional diffusion model is utilized to represent the diverse distribution of a behavior policy. Meanwhile, based on the diffusion model, preferred actions within the same behavior distribution are automatically generated through the critic function. Moreover, an anti-noise preference optimization is designed to achieve policy improvement by using the preferred actions, which can adapt to noise-preferred actions for stable training. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method provides competitive or superior performance compared to previous state-of-the-art offline RL methods, particularly in sparse reward tasks such as Kitchen and AntMaze. Additionally, we empirically prove the effectiveness of anti-noise preference optimization.

Equipping a conversational search engine with strategies regarding when to ask clarification questions is becoming increasingly important across various domains. Attributing to the context understanding capability of LLMs and their access to domain-specific sources of knowledge, LLM-based clarification strategies feature rapid transfer to various domains in a post-hoc manner. However, they still struggle to deliver promising performance on unseen domains, struggling to achieve effective domain transferability. We take the first step to investigate this issue and existing methods tend to produce one-size-fits-all strategies across diverse domains, limiting their search effectiveness. In response, we introduce a novel method, called Style, to achieve effective domain transferability. Although Hierarchical Federated Learning (HFL) utilizes edge servers (ESs) to alleviate communication burdens, its model performance will be degraded by non-IID data and limited communication resources. Current works often assume that data is uniformly distributed, which however contradicts the heterogeneity of IoT. Solutions of additional model training to check the data distribution inevitably increases computational costs and the risk of privacy leakage. The challenges in solving these issues are how to reduce the impact of non-IID data without involving raw data and how to rationalize the communication resource allocation for addressing straggler problem. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel optimization method based on coaLition formation gamE and grAdient Projection, called LEAP. Specifically, we combine edge data distribution with coalition formation game innovatively to adjust the correlations between clients and ESs dynamically, which ensures optimal correlations. We further capture the client heterogeneity to achieve the rational bandwidth allocation from coalition perception and determine the optimal transmission power within specified delay constraints at client level. Experimental results on four real datasets show that LEAP is able to achieve 20.62% improvement in model accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art baselines. Moreover, LEAP effectively reduce transmission energy consumption by at least about 2.24 times.

With the rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs), EV aggregators have been playing a increasingly vital role in power systems by not merely providing charging management but also participating in wholesale electricity markets. This work studies the optimal real-time bidding strategy for an EV aggregator. Since the charging process of EVs is time-coupled, it is necessary for EV aggregators to consider future operational conditions (e.g., future EV arrivals) when deciding the current bidding strategy. However, accurately forecasting future operational conditions is challenging under the inherent uncertainties. Hence, there demands a real-time bidding strategy based solely on the up-to-date information, which is the main goal of this work. We start by developing an online optimal EV charging management algorithm for the EV aggregator via Lyapunov optimization. Based on this, an optimal real-time bidding strategy (bidding cost curve and bounds) for the aggregator is derived. Then, an efficient yet practical algorithm is proposed to obtain the bidding strategy. It shows that with the proposed bidding strategy, the aggregator's profit is nearly offline optimal. Moreover, the wholesale electricity market clearing result aligns with the individual aggregator's optimal charging strategy given the prices. Temporal Knowledge Graph (TKG) reasoning involves predicting future events based on historical information. However, due to the unpredictability of future events, this task is highly challenging. To address this issue, we propose a multi-scale hybrid architecture model based on ensemble learning, called RLGNet (Repeating-Local-Global History Network). Inspired by the application of multi-scale information in other fields, we introduce the concept of multi-scale information into TKG reasoning. Specifically, RLGNet captures and integrates different levels of historical information by combining modules that process information at various scales. The model comprises three modules: the Repeating History Module focuses on identifying repetitive patterns and trends in historical data, the Local History Module captures short-term changes and details, and the Global History Module provides a macro perspective on long-term changes. Additionally, to address the limitations of previous single-architecture models in generalizing across single-step and multi-step reasoning tasks, we adopted architectures based on Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) and Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLP) for the Local and Global History Modules, respectively. This hybrid architecture design enables the model to complement both multi-step and single-step reasoning capabilities. Finally, to address the issue of noise in TKGs, we adopt an ensemble learning strategy, combining the predictions of the three modules to reduce the impact of noise on the final prediction results. In the evaluation on six benchmark datasets, our approach generally outperforms existing TKG reasoning models in multi-step and single-step reasoning tasks.

With extensive pre-trained knowledge and high-level general capabilities, large language models (LLMs) emerge as a promising avenue to augment reinforcement learning (RL) in aspects such as multi-task learning, sample efficiency, and high-level task planning. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature in LLM-enhanced RL and summarize its characteristics compared to conventional RL methods, aiming to clarify the research scope and directions for future studies. Utilizing the classical agent-environment interaction paradigm, we propose a structured taxonomy to systematically categorize LLMs' functionalities in RL, including four roles: information processor, reward designer, decision-maker, and generator. For each role, we summarize the methodologies, analyze the specific RL challenges that are mitigated, and provide insights into future directions. Lastly, a comparative analysis of each role, potential applications, prospective opportunities, and challenges of the LLM-enhanced RL are discussed. With the rising adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs), microgrid dispatch is facing new challenges: DER owners are independent stakeholders seeking to maximize their individual profits rather than being controlled centrally; and the dispatch of renewable generators may affect the microgrid's exposure to uncertainty. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a two-stage robust microgrid dispatch model with real-time energy sharing and endogenous uncertainty. In the day-ahead stage, the connection/disconnection of renewable generators is optimized, which influences the size and dimension of the uncertainty set. As a result, the uncertainty set is endogenously given. In addition, non-anticipative operational bounds for energy storage (ES) are derived to enable the online operation of ES in real-time. In the real-time stage, DER owners (consumers and prosumers) share energy with each other via a proposed energy sharing mechanism, which forms a generalized Nash game. To solve the robust microgrid dispatch model, we develop an equivalent optimization model to compute the real-time energy sharing equilibrium. Based on this, a projection-based column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) method is proposed to handle the endogenous uncertainty. The atmosphere of Triton was probed directly by observing a ground-based stellar occultation on 6 October 2022. This rare event yielded 23 positive light curves collected from 13 separate observation stations contributing to our campaign. The significance of this event lies in its potential to directly validate the modest pressure fluctuation on Triton, a phenomenon not definitively verified by previous observations, including only five stellar occultations, and the Voyager 2 radio occultation in 1989. Using an approach consistent with a comparable study, we precisely determined a surface pressure of $14.07_{-0.13}^{+0.21}~\mathrm{\mu bar}$ in 2022. This new pressure rules out any significant monotonic variation in pressure between 2017 and 2022 through direct observations, as it is in alignment with the 2017 value. Additionally, both the pressures in 2017 and 2022 align with the 1989 value. This provides further support for the conclusion drawn from the previous volatile transport model simulation, which is consistent with the observed alignment between the pressures in 1989 and 2017; that is to say, the pressure fluctuation is modest. Traffic prediction constitutes a pivotal facet within the purview of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and the attainment of highly precise predictions holds profound significance for efficacious traffic management. The precision of prevailing deep learning-driven traffic prediction models typically sees an upward trend with a rise in the volume of training data. However, the procurement of comprehensive spatiotemporal datasets for traffic is often fraught with challenges, primarily stemming from the substantial costs associated with data collection and retention. Consequently, developing a model that can achieve accurate predictions and good generalization ability in areas with limited historical traffic data is a challenging problem. It is noteworthy that the rapidly advancing pretrained Large Language Models (LLMs) of recent years have demonstrated exceptional proficiency in cross-modality knowledge transfer and few-shot learning. Recognizing the sequential nature of traffic data, similar to language, we introduce TPLLM, a novel traffic prediction framework leveraging LLMs. In this framework, we construct a sequence embedding layer based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and a graph embedding layer based on Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) to extract sequence features and spatial features, respectively. These are subsequently integrated to form inputs that are suitable for LLMs. A Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning approach is applied to TPLLM, thereby facilitating efficient learning and minimizing computational demands. The phonon transport mechanisms and the anomalous temperature-dependent lattice thermal conductivities (kL) in Ag-based argyrodites have not been fully understood. Herein, we systematically study the phonon thermal transport of five Ag-based crystalline argyrodites Ag7PS6, Ag7AsS6, Ag8SnS6, Ag8GeS6 and Ag9GaS6 utilizing perturbation theory and the unified theory thermal transport model. Our results show that, as the complexity of the unit cell increases, the proportion of the population terms falls while the coherence contributions become more significant, leading to the relatively weak temperature-dependent kL of Ag7PS6 and Ag7AsS6, while the more complex crystalline argyrodites, Ag8SnS6, Ag8GeS6 and Ag9GaS6, exhibiting a glass-like behavior in their temperature dependence of kL. We attribute the positive temperature-dependent and ultralow kL of Ag8SnS6, Ag8GeS6 and Ag9GaS6 to the dominance of wavelike phonons and the strong phonon broadening. Furthermore, using laser flash measurements and the homogeneous non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations based on accurate machine learning neuroevolution potentials, we provide further evidence for the glass-like temperature-dependent kL of Ag8SnS6 and Ag8GeS6., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The creation of polarized electron-positron pairs by the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process in short laser pulses is investigated using the Baier-Katkov semiclassical method beyond local-constant-field approximation (LCFA), which allows for identifying the interferences effects in the positron polarization. When the laser intensity is in the intermediate %multiphoton regime, the interferences of pair production in different formation lengths induce an enhancement of pair production probability for spin-down positrons, which significantly affects the polarization of created positrons. The polarization features are distinct from that obtained with LCFA, revealing the invalidity of LCFA in this regime. Meanwhile, the angular distribution for different spin states varies, resulting in an angular-dependent polarization of positrons. The average polarization of positrons at beam center is highly sensitive to the laser's carrier-envelope phase (CEP), which provides a potential alternative way of determining the CEP of strong lasers. The verification of the observed interference phenomenon is possible for the upcoming experiments.

We performed 23Na NMR measurements on a single-domain crystal of the Kitaev material Na3Co2SbO6, with magnetic field applied along the crystalline a axis. A positive Curie-Weiss constant is obtained from the NMR Knight shift, which suggests the existence of ferromagnetic exchange couplings. The antiferromagnetic ordering is found to be suppressed at a field of 1.9 T. Inside the ordered phase, our data reveal two additional phase transitions. At 1.9 T, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/23T1 establishes a quantum critical behavior at high temperatures. However, at low temperatures, a gapped behavior is observed at the critical field, which suggests a weakly first-order transition instead and a possible field-induced quantum spin liquid. Vacuum polarization (VP) is investigated for the interaction of a polarized $\gamma$-ray beam of GeV photons with a counterpropagating ultraintense laser pulse. In a conventional setup of a vacuum birefringence measurement, a VP signal is the emerging small circular (linear) polarization of the initially linearly (circularly) polarized probe photons. The pair production via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process in such a high-energy environment eliminates part of the $\gamma$-photons in the outgoing $\gamma$-beam, increasing the statistical error and decreasing the accuracy of this VP signal. In contrast, we investigate the conversion of the emerging circular polarization of $\gamma$-photons into longitudinal polarization of the created positrons, considering the latter as the main VP signal. To study the VP effects in the highly nonlinear regime, where the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian method breaks down, we have developed a Monte-Carlo simulation method, incorporating vacuum birefringence and dichroism via the one-loop QED probabilities in the locally constant field approximation. Our Monte Carlo method will enable the study of VP effects in strong fields of arbitrary configuration. With 10~PW laser systems, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the fermionic signal of the VP effect at the 5$\sigma$ confidence level with a few hours of measurement time.

When analyzing the components influencing the stock prices, it is commonly believed that economic activities play an important role. More specifically, asset prices are more sensitive to the systematic economic news that impose a pervasive effect on the whole market. Moreover, the investors will not be rewarded for bearing idiosyncratic risks as such risks are diversifiable. In the paper Economic Forces and the Stock Market 1986, the authors introduced an attribution model to identify the specific systematic economic forces influencing the market. They first defined and examined five classic factors from previous research papers: Industrial Production, Unanticipated Inflation, Change in Expected Inflation, Risk Premia, and The Term Structure. By adding in new factors, the Market Indices, Consumptions and Oil Prices, one by one, they examined the significant contribution of each factor to the stock return. The paper concluded that the stock returns are exposed to the systematic economic news, and they are priced with respect to their risk exposure. Also, the significant factors can be identified by simply adopting their model. Driven by such motivation, we conduct an attribution analysis based on the general framework of their model to further prove the importance of the economic factors and identify the specific identity of significant factors., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Historically, the economic recession often came abruptly and disastrously. For instance, during the 2008 financial crisis, the SP 500 fell 46 percent from October 2007 to March 2009. If we could detect the signals of the crisis earlier, we could have taken preventive measures. Therefore, driven by such motivation, we use advanced machine learning techniques, including Random Forest and Extreme Gradient Boosting, to predict any potential market crashes mainly in the US market. Also, we would like to compare the performance of these methods and examine which model is better for forecasting US stock market crashes. We apply our models on the daily financial market data, which tend to be more responsive with higher reporting frequencies. We consider 75 explanatory variables, including general US stock market indexes, SP 500 sector indexes, as well as market indicators that can be used for the purpose of crisis prediction. Finally, we conclude, with selected classification metrics, that the Extreme Gradient Boosting method performs the best in predicting US stock market crisis events., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and ventricular tachycardia (VT) are two of the sustained arrhythmias that significantly affect the quality of life of patients. Treatment of AF and VT often requires radiofrequency ablation of heart tissues using an ablation catheter. Recent progress in ablation therapy leverages magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for higher contrast visual feedback, and additionally utilizes a guiding sheath with an actively deflectable tip to improve the dexterity of the catheter inside the heart. This paper presents the design and validation of an MR-conditional robotic module for automated actuation of both the ablation catheter and the sheath. The robotic module features a compact design for improved accessibility inside the MR scanner bore and is driven by piezoelectric motors to ensure MR-conditionality. The combined catheter-sheath mechanism is essentially a concentric tendon-driven continuum robot and its kinematics is modeled by the constant curvature model for closed-loop position control.
