Differentiable models of physical systems provide a powerful platform for gradient-based algorithms, with particular impact on parameter estimation and optimal control. Quantum systems present a particular challenge for such characterisation and control, owing to their inherently stochastic nature and sensitivity to environmental parameters. To address this challenge, we present a versatile differentiable quantum master equation solver, and incorporate this solver into a framework for device characterisation. Our approach utilises gradient-based optimisation and Bayesian inference to provide estimates and uncertainties in quantum device parameters. To showcase our approach, we consider steady state charge transport through electrostatically defined quantum dots. Using simulated data, we demonstrate efficient estimation of parameters for a single quantum dot, and model selection as well as the capability of our solver to compute time evolution for a double quantum dot system. Our differentiable solver stands to widen the impact of physics-aware machine learning algorithms on quantum devices for characterisation and control.

Spanning over two decades, the study of qubits in semiconductors for quantum computing has yielded significant breakthroughs. However, the development of large-scale semiconductor quantum circuits is still limited by challenges in efficiently tuning and operating these circuits. Identifying optimal operating conditions for these qubits is complex, involving the exploration of vast parameter spaces. This presents a real 'needle in the haystack' problem, which, until now, has resisted complete automation due to device variability and fabrication imperfections. In this study, we present the first fully autonomous tuning of a semiconductor qubit, from a grounded device to Rabi oscillations, a clear indication of successful qubit operation. We demonstrate this automation, achieved without human intervention, in a Ge/Si core/shell nanowire device. Our approach integrates deep learning, Bayesian optimization, and computer vision techniques. We expect this automation algorithm to apply to a wide range of semiconductor qubit devices, allowing for statistical studies of qubit quality metrics. As a demonstration of the potential of full automation, we characterise how the Rabi frequency and g-factor depend on barrier gate voltages for one of the qubits found by the algorithm. Twenty years after the initial demonstrations of spin qubit operation, this significant advancement is poised to finally catalyze the operation of large, previously unexplored quantum circuits.

The future development of quantum technologies relies on creating and manipulating quantum systems of increasing complexity, with key applications in computation, simulation and sensing. This poses severe challenges in the efficient control, calibration and validation of quantum states and their dynamics. Although the full simulation of large-scale quantum systems may only be possible on a quantum computer, classical characterization and optimization methods still play an important role. Here, we review different approaches that use classical post-processing techniques, possibly combined with adaptive optimization, to learn quantum systems, their correlation properties, dynamics and interaction with the environment. We discuss theoretical proposals and successful implementations across different multiple-qubit architectures such as spin qubits, trapped ions, photonic and atomic systems, and superconducting circuits. Pauli spin blockade (PSB) can be employed as a great resource for spin qubit initialisation and readout even at elevated temperatures but it can be difficult to identify. We present a machine learning algorithm capable of automatically identifying PSB using charge transport measurements. The scarcity of PSB data is circumvented by training the algorithm with simulated data and by using cross-device validation. We demonstrate our approach on a silicon field-effect transistor device and report an accuracy of 96% on different test devices, giving evidence that the approach is robust to device variability. The approach is expected to be employable across all types of quantum dot devices.

The broad energy response, low electronic read noise, and good energy resolution have made X-ray Charge-Coupled Devices (CCDs) an obvious choice for developing soft X-ray astronomical instruments over the last half century. They also come in large array formats with small pixel sizes which make them a potential candidate for the next generation astronomical X-ray missions. However, the next generation X-ray telescopic experiments propose for significantly larger collecting area compared to the existing observatories in order to explore the low luminosity and high redshift X-ray universe which requires these detectors to have an order of magnitude faster readout. In this context, the Stanford University (SU) in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has initiated the development of fast readout electronics for X-ray CCDs. At SU, we have designed and developed a fast and low noise readout module with the goal of achieving a readout speed of 5 Mpixel/s. We successfully ran a prototype CCD matrix of 512 $\times$ 512 pixels at 4 Mpixels/s. In this paper, we describe the details of the readout electronics and report the performance of the detectors at these readout speeds in terms of read noise and energy resolution. In the future, we plan to continue to improve performance of the readout module and eventually converge to a dedicated ASIC based readout system to enable parallel read out of large array multi-node CCD devices., Comment: Submitted in Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems (JATIS)

The NSF-sponsored Undergraduate ALFALFA Team (UAT) promotes long-term collaborative research opportunities for faculty and students from 23 U.S. public and private primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) within the context of the extragalactic ALFALFA HI blind legacy survey project. Over twelve project years of partnering with Arecibo and Green Bank Observatories, the UAT has had a demonstrable impact on the health of a legacy astronomy project, science education, and equity/inclusion in astronomy, with successful outcomes for 373 UAT students (39% women; ~30% members of underrepresented groups) and 34 faculty (44% women). The UAT model is adaptable to many large scientific projects and can be supported by relatively modest funding. We recommend that granting agencies identify funding resources to support the model, either as an add-on to legacy grant support or as a stand-alone funding source. This could include encouragement of UAT-like components in large scale projects currently being developed, such as the LSST and TMT. By doing this, we will recognize the high numbers of astronomy research-trained heavy-teaching-load faculty at PUIs as an under-utilized resource of the astronomy community (see also White Paper by Ribaudo et al.). We report a multi-objective campaign of targeted 21 cm HI line observations of sources selected from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (Arecibo L-band Feed Array) survey (ALFALFA) and galaxies identified by their morphological and photometric properties in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The aims of this program have been (1) to confirm the reality of some ALFALFA sources whose enigmatic nature suggest additional multiwavelength observations; (2) to probe the low signal-to-noise ratio regime, below the ALFALFA reliability limit; and (3) to explore the feasibility of using optical morphology, color and surface brightness to identify gas-rich objects in the region of the Pisces-Perseus Supercluster (PPS) whose HI fluxes are below the ALFALFA sensitivity limit at that distance. As expected, the reliability of ALFALFA detections depends strongly on the signal-to-noise ratio of the HI line signal and its coincidence with a probable stellar counterpart identified by its optical properties, suggestive of on-going star formation. The identification of low mass, star forming populations enables targeted HI line observations to detect galaxies with HI line fluxes below the ALFALFA sensitivity limits in fixed local volumes (D < 100 Mpc). We present the catalog of ~31500 extragalactic HI line sources detected by the completed ALFALFA survey out to z < 0.06 including both high signal-to-noise ratio (> 6.5) detections and ones of lower quality which coincide in both position and recessional velocity with galaxies of known redshift. We review the observing technique, data reduction pipeline, and catalog construction process, focusing on details of particular relevance to understanding the catalog's compiled parameters. We further describe and make available the digital HI line spectra associated with the catalogued sources. In addition to the extragalactic HI line detections, we report nine confirmed OH megamasers and ten OH megamaser candidates at 0.16 < z < 0.22 whose OH line signals are redshifted into the ALFALFA frequency band. We explore the structure of the spin foam-like vertex expansion in loop quantum cosmology and discuss properties of the corresponding amplitudes, with the aim of elucidating some of the expansion's useful properties and features. We find that the expansion is best suited for consideration of conceptual questions and for investigating short-time, highly quantum behavior. In order to study dynamics at cosmological scales, the expansion must be carried to very high order, limiting its direct utility as a calculational tool for such questions. We review the application of the consistent (or decoherent) histories formulation of quantum theory to canonical loop quantum cosmology. Conventional quantum theory relies crucially on "measurements" to convert unrealized quantum potentialities into physical outcomes that can be assigned probabilities. In the early universe and other physical contexts in which there are no observers or measuring apparatus (or indeed, in any closed quantum system), what criteria determine which alternative outcomes may be realized and what their probabilities are? In the consistent histories formulation it is the vanishing of interference between the branch wave functions describing alternative histories -- as determined by the system's decoherence functional -- that determines which alternatives may be assigned probabilities. We describe the consistent histories formulation and how it may be applied to canonical loop quantum cosmology, describing in detail the application to homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models with scalar matter. We show how the theory may be used to make definite physical predictions in the absence of "observers". As an application, we demonstrate how the theory predicts that loop quantum models "bounce" from large volume to large volume, while conventional "Wheeler-DeWitt"-quantized universes are invariably singular. Assignment of consistent quantum probabilities to events in a quantum universe is a fundamental challenge which every quantum cosmology/gravity framework must overcome. In loop quantum cosmology, this issue leads to a fundamental question: What is the probability that the universe undergoes a non-singular bounce? Using the consistent histories formulation, this question was successfully answered recently by the authors for a spatially flat FRW model in the canonical approach. In this manuscript, we obtain a covariant generalization of this result. Our analysis is based on expressing loop quantum cosmology in the spin foam paradigm and using histories defined via volume transitions to compute the amplitudes of transitions obtained using a vertex expansion. A fundamental issue for any quantum cosmological theory is to specify how probabilities can be assigned to various quantum events or sequences of events such as the occurrence of singularities or bounces. In previous work, we have demonstrated how this issue can be successfully addressed within the consistent histories approach to quantum theory for Wheeler-DeWitt-quantized cosmological models. In this work, we generalize that analysis to the exactly solvable loop quantization of a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic cosmology sourced with a massless, minimally coupled scalar field known as sLQC. We provide an explicit, rigorous and complete decoherent histories formulation for this model and compute the probabilities for the occurrence of a quantum bounce vs. a singularity. Using the scalar field as an emergent internal time, we show for generic states that the probability for a singularity to occur in this model is zero, and that of a bounce is unity, complementing earlier studies of the expectation values of the volume and matter density in this theory. We also show from the consistent histories point of view that all states in this model, whether quantum or classical, achieve arbitrarily large volume in the limit of infinite `past' or `future' scalar `time', in the sense that the wave function evaluated at any arbitrary fixed value of the volume vanishes in that limit. We offer a new, physically transparent argument for the existence of the critical, universal maximum matter density in loop quantum cosmology for the case of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmology with scalar matter. The argument is based on the existence of a sharp exponential ultraviolet cutoff in momentum space on the eigenfunctions of the quantum cosmological dynamical evolution operator (the gravitational part of the Hamiltonian constraint), attributable to the fundamental discreteness of spatial volume in loop quantum cosmology. The existence of the cutoff is proved directly from recently found exact solutions for the eigenfunctions for this model. As a consequence, the operators corresponding to the momentum of the scalar field and the spatial volume approximately commute. The ultraviolet cutoff then implies that the scalar momentum, though not a bounded operator, is in effect bounded on subspaces of constant volume, leading to the upper bound on the expectation value of the matter density. The maximum matter density is universal (i.e. independent of the quantum state) because of the linear scaling of the cutoff with volume. These heuristic arguments are supplemented by a new proof in the volume representation of the existence of the maximum matter density. The techniques employed to demonstrate the existence of the cutoff also allow us to extract the large volume limit of the exact eigenfunctions, confirming earlier numerical and analytical work showing that the eigenfunctions approach superpositions of the eigenfunctions of the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization of the same model. We present a current catalog of 21 cm HI line sources extracted from the Arecibo Legacy Fast Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFALFA) survey over ~2800 square degrees of sky: the alpha.40 catalog. Covering 40% of the final survey area, the alpha.40 catalog contains 15855 sources in the regions 07h30m < R.A. < 16h30m, +04 deg < Dec. < +16 deg and +24 deg < Dec. < +28 deg and 22h < R.A. < 03h, +14 deg < Dec. < +16 deg and +24 deg < Dec. < +32 deg. Of those, 15041 are certainly extragalactic, yielding a source density of 5.3 galaxies per square degree, a factor of 29 improvement over the catalog extracted from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey. In addition to the source centroid positions, HI line flux densities, recessional velocities and line widths, the catalog includes the coordinates of the most probable optical counterpart of each HI line detection, and a separate compilation provides a crossmatch to identifications given in the photometric and spectroscopic catalogs associated with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. Fewer than 2% of the extragalactic HI line sources cannot be identified with a feasible optical counterpart; some of those may be rare OH megamasers at 0.16 < z < 0.25. A detailed analysis is presented of the completeness, width dependent sensitivity function and bias inherent in the current alpha.40 catalog. The impact of survey selection, distance errors, current volume coverage and local large scale structure on the derivation of the HI mass function is assessed. We give an explicit, rigorous framework for calculating quantum probabilities in a model theory of quantum gravity. Specifically, we construct the decoherence functional for the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with a free, massless, minimally coupled scalar field, thus providing a complete decoherent histories formulation for this quantum cosmological model. The decoherence functional is applied to study predictions concerning the model's Dirac (relational) observables; the behavior of semiclassical states and superpositions of such states; and to study the singular behavior of quantum Wheeler-DeWitt universes. Within this framework, rigorous formulae are given for calculating the corresponding probabilities from the wave function when those probabilities may be consistently defined, thus replacing earlier heuristics for interpreting the wave function of the universe with explicit constructions. It is shown according to a rigorously formulated standard, and in a quantum-mechanically consistent way, that in this quantization these models are generically singular. Independent of the choice of state we show that the probability for these Wheeler-DeWitt quantum universes to ever encounter a singularity is unity. We illustrate the crucial role played by decoherence (consistency of quantum histories) in extracting consistent quantum probabilities for alternative histories in quantum cosmology. Specifically, within a Wheeler-DeWitt quantization of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model sourced with a free massless scalar field, we calculate the probability that the univese is singular in the sense that it assumes zero volume. Classical solutions of this model are a disjoint set of expanding and contracting singular branches. A naive assessment of the behavior of quantum states which are superpositions of expanding and contracting universes may suggest that a "quantum bounce" is possible i.e. that the wave function of the universe may remain peaked on a non-singular classical solution throughout its history. However, a more careful consistent histories analysis shows that for arbitrary states in the physical Hilbert space the probability of this Wheeler-DeWitt quantum universe encountering the big bang/crunch singularity is equal to unity. The Hobart and William Smith Colleges Alcohol Education Project (HWS) began in 1996 to test the social norms approach to reducing alcohol use by students. A social norms approach works on the premise that misperceived norms, perceptions that usually exaggerate what is typical for other students, lead to increased drinking as students attempt to conform to what they think others are doing. Effectively informing students of actual drinking norms should reduce student drinking. A campuswide survey in 1995 had established that 89% of students typically drank alcohol in an average weekend, and 55% were frequent heavy drinkers. The HWS Project had five activity categories; (1) data collection; (2) print media campaigns; (3) electronic media campaign; (4) curriculum development; and (5) campus presentations, staff development, and cocurricular activities. Student surveys in 1997 and 1998 showed an 18% decrease in the average number of drinks consumed by each student, with comparable decreases in the number of drinks consumed in a row and at parties and bars. Project findings provide evidence for the effectiveness of social norms efforts to reduce high risk drinking and associated problems at colleges and universities, even at institutions where sociodemographic contexts traditionally present the highest levels of alcohol consumption among student populations. One obtains Bell's inequalities if one posits a hypothetical joint probability distribution, or {\it measure}, whose marginals yield the probabilities produced by the spin measurements in question. The existence of a joint measure is in turn equivalent to a certain causality condition known as ``screening off''. We show that if one assumes, more generally, a joint {\it quantal measure}, or ``decoherence functional'', one obtains instead an analogous inequality weaker by a factor of $\sqrt{2}$. The proof of this ``Tsirel'son inequality'' is geometrical and rests on the possibility of associating a Hilbert space to any strongly positive quantal measure. A sum-over-histories generalized quantum theory is developed for homogeneous minisuperspace type A Bianchi cosmological models, focussing on the particular example of the classically recollapsing Bianchi IX universe. The decoherence functional for such universes is exhibited. We show how the probabilities of decoherent sets of alternative, coarse-grained histories of these model universes can be calculated. We consider in particular the probabilities for classical evolution defined by a suitable coarse-graining. For a restricted class of initial conditions and coarse grainings we exhibit the approximate decoherence of alternative histories in which the universe behaves classically and those in which it does not. For these situations we show that the probability is near unity for the universe to recontract classically if it expands classically. This paper identifies differences in educational outcomes for rural students in South Australia compared to their metropolitan peers. This information was compiled by a task force whose aim was to develop an action plan to achieve equality of educational opportunities for rural students. Available information suggests that students in country schools generally do less well than their metropolitan peers or than the student population as a whole. Teachers, parents, and students cite restricted access to educational and other services as the major detriment experienced by students in country schools. In addition, rural students spend less time studying languages other than English, music, drama, or dance, and more time studying agriculture, computing/keyboarding, health, or home economics, when compared to students in metropolitan schools. Other findings include: marked differences in curriculum provision between country and metropolitan secondary schools; discrepancies in dropout rates of students living in the country when compared to metropolitan students; rural-urban differences in achievement scores in math, physics, and chemistry; and lower participation rates of rural students in postsecondary education and training. These findings represent preliminary information, and more research is needed concerning participation, achievement, and retention to provide a basis for informed decision making. Additional rural issues that were raised by principals, teachers, and support staff include staffing, interagency support, and changing employment opportunities. (LP)

The geometry of decoherence in generalized "consistent histories" quantum theory is explored, revealing properties of the theory that are independent of any particular application of it. It is shown how the decoherence functional of a closed quantum system may be regarded as an Hermitian form on the space of linear operators on the Hilbert space of the system. This identification makes manifest a number of structural properties of decoherence functionals. For example, a bound on the maximum number of histories in a consistent set is determined. When the decoherence functional is positive -- as in conventional quantum mechanics -- it defines a semi-inner product on the space of history operators. This shows that consistent sets of histories are just orthogonal sets in this inner product. It further implies the existence in general of Cauchy-Schwarz and triangle inequalities for positive decoherence functionals. The geometrical significance of the ILS theorem classifying all possible decoherence functionals is illuminated, and a version of the ILS theorem for decoherence functionals on class operators is given. The class of history operators consistent according to a given decoherence functional is found, and, conversely, it is shown how to construct the decoherence functionals according to which a given set of histories is consistent. This paper examines an observable consequence for the diffuse extragalactic background radiation (EGBR) of the hypothesis that if closed, our universe possesses time symmetric boundary conditions. For simplicity, attention is focused on optical wavelengths. The universe is modeled as closed Friedmann- Roberston-Walker. It is shown that, over a wide range of frequencies, electromagnetic radiation can propagate largely unabsorbed from the present epoch into the recollapsing phase, confirming and demonstrating the generality of results of Davies and Twamley. As a consequence, time symmetric boundary conditions imply that the optical EGBR is at least twice that due to the galaxies on our past light cone, and possibly considerably more. It is therefore possible to test experimentally the notion that if our universe is closed, it may be in a certain sense time symmetric. The lower bound on the "excess" EGBR in a time symmetric universe is consistent with present observations. Nevertheless, better observations and modelling may soon rule it out entirely. In addition, many physical complications arise in attempting to reconcile a transparent future light cone with time symmetric boundary conditions, thereby providing further arguments against the possibility that our universe is time symmetric., Comment: latex 2.09, 30 pages, 1 figure. This eleventh annual survey describes the nature and degree of the shortage of vocational agriculture teachers in 1975 and identifies changes and trends since 1965. The purpose of the survey is to provide data to be used in statewide and nationwide recruitment efforts to secure prospective vocational agriculture teachers. Information was obtained from questionnaires mailed to teacher educators and state supervisors. Results are presented in tabular form. Major findings are summarized, and recommendations offered relating to recruitment, teacher certification, and employment. Appendices include the two questionnaires used in the survey. (Author/RG)

The behaviour of small corner cracks, inclined or perpendicular to loading direction, is presented. There are two aspects to this investigation: initiation of small cracks and monitoring their subsequent growth. An initial pre-cracking procedure under cyclic compression is adopted to minimize the residual damage at the tip of the growing and self-arresting crack under cyclic compression. A final fatigue specimen, cut from the larger pre-cracked specimen, has two corner flaws. The opening load of corner flaw is monitored using a novel strain gauge approach. The behaviour of small corner cracks is described in terms of growth rate relative to the size of the crack and its shape.

A national study (the thirteenth annual study of its kind) examined the supply and demand for teachers of vocational agriculture in 1977. To obtain data pertaining to supply and demand for vocational agricultural teachers, researchers mailed questionnaires and follow-up letters and made telephone calls to all institutions preparing teachers in vocational agriculture as well as to the offices of state supervisors in agriculture. Information regarding numbers of graduates qualified to teach agriculture and the number of teaching positions available were then tabulated for each state and each institution preparing teachers. Data revealed that, while fewer persons were qualified to teach vocational agriculture in 1977 than were previously graduating, the percentage of individuals placed in vocational agriculture teaching positions remained steady. A turnover of 10.3 percent also contributed to a teacher shortage. Increased numbers of teachers were involved in instructing adults and young farmers as well as high school students. Also increasing were the numbers of positions in technical and community colleges. Recommendations called for increased efforts to recruit students into vocational agriculture education, to reduce teacher turnover, and to reduce the number of uncertified teachers. (MN)

A national study (the sixteenth annual study of its kind) examined the supply and demand for teachers of vocational agriculture in 1980. To obtain data pertaining to supply and demand for vocational agriculture teachers, researchers mailed questionnaires and follow-up letters and made telephone calls to all institutions preparing teachers in vocational agriculture as well as to the offices of state supervisors in agriculture. Information regarding numbers of graduates qualified and the number of teaching positions available were then tabulated for each state and each institution preparing teachers. The study revealed a turnover rate of 12.5 percent requiring 1,561 teacher replacements for 12,510 positions in 1980. The number of persons qualified to teach agriculture was the lowest in the last 11 years. Thus, a shortage of vocational agricultural teachers continues to exist. However, the shortage occurs in certain areas of the country in an irregular pattern. Recommendations called for increased efforts to recruit students into vocational agricultural education, to reduce teacher turnover, and to make salaries in shortage states competitive with those in surplus areas. Most secondary positions were filled by fully certified teachers. Recommendations called for increased efforts to recruit students into vocational agriculture education, to reduce teacher turnover, and to broaden certification standards. (MN)

The contour crossing statistic, defined as the mean number of times per unit length that a straight line drawn through the field crosses a given contour, is applied to model density fields and to smoothed samples of galaxies. Models in which the matter is in a bubble structure, in a filamentary net, or in clusters can be distinguished from Gaussian density distributions. The shape of the contour crossing curve in the initially Gaussian fields considered remains Gaussian after gravitational evolution and biasing, as long as the smoothing length is longer than the mass correlation length. With a smoothing length of 5/h Mpc, models containing cosmic strings are indistinguishable from Gaussian distributions. Cosmic explosion models are significantly non-Gaussian, having a bubbly structure. Samples from the CfA survey and the Haynes and Giovanelli (1986) survey are more strongly non-Gaussian at a smoothing length of 6/h Mpc than any of the models examined. At a smoothing length of 12/h Mpc, the Haynes and Giovanelli sample appears Gaussian.
