1. Graphic Arts Industry and Technology in the South Carolina Labor Market Region with Implications for Curriculum Development. Graphic Arts Inventory for Education. Final Report.

Abstract

The purpose of this study, concerned with the graphics arts industry, were to identify: (1) skills and technical knowledges needed by employees, (2) processes and types of equipment in use, (3) sources of labor, and (4) opinions of employers concerning personnel training. Data were obtained describing the industry in the Carolinas and Georgia by a postcard survey for general information and a long form for technical information. Fifty-nine company representatives were interviewed for opinions and desires in terms of manpower training. It was found that: (1) 52 percent of the companies employed fewer than 10 employees, (2) The greatest shortage of qualified workers was in the pressroom, followed by layout and design, composition and imposition, and reproduction photography, (3) The industry desired more post-high school formal trade training, and (4) School programs were desired in which students could obtain a broad range of experiences. Conclusions include: (1) Production employees should be prepared with a background in the overall reproductions processes, and (2) The disadvantages of production printing by school classes were numerous. Abstract

This book explains how to implement a Total Quality Management (TQM) program within an organization focusing in particular on ways to sustain the effort. Part 1 of five offers an overview of the TQM approach and the rationale for adopting it. Topics of discussion include signs of the need for change, what TQM is and what it is not, the basics of implementation and the benefits of the TQM approach. Part 2 focuses on the "Language of TQM" and discusses the definition of quality, the performance standard of TQM, building quality into work, and measuring quality. Part 3, "The Organization of TQM," describes how the organization parallels the existing management structure and implements both a top down and a bottom up mechanism for identifying problems and improvement opportunities. Part 4 covers the practical techniques for accomplishing the task of implementing an organization-wide continuous improvement effort. Part 5, the final section, discusses different strategies for implementing TQM, touches on common mistakes and misconceptions about TQM that inhibit its application, and suggests ideas for tailoring the TQM process to individual organizations. An appended reference section offers examples of measures by functional area, examples of unquality (error) costs by functional area, the premise of TQM, a definition of participative management and a concordance. Abstract

This study provides a preliminary assessment of the potential benefits of applying unsteady separation control to transport aircraft. Estimates are given for some of the costs associated with a specific application to high-lift systems. High-leverage areas for future research were identified during the course of the study. The study was conducted in three phases. Phase 1 consisted of a coarse screening of potential applications within the aerodynamics discipline. Potential benefits were identified and in some cases quantified in a preliminary way. Phase 2 concentrated on the application to the wing high-lift system, deemed to have the greatest potential benefit for commercial transports. A team of experts, including other disciplines (i.e. hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems, structures, configurations, manufacturing, and finance), assessed the feasibility, benefits, and costs to arrive at estimates of net benefits. In both phases of the study, areas of concern and areas for future research were identified. In phase 3 of this study, the high-leverage areas for future research were prioritized as a guide for future efforts aimed at the application of active flow control to commercial transport aircraft.

4. Evaluation of a telerobotic system to assist surgeons in microsurgery

Abstract

A tool was developed that assists surgeons in manipulating surgical instruments more precisely than is possible manually. The tool is a telemanipulator that scales down the surgeon's hand motion and filters tremor in the motion. The signals measured from the surgeon's hand are transformed and used to drive a six-degrees-of-freedom robot to position the surgical instrument mounted on its tip. A pilot study comparing the performance of the telemanipulator system against manual instrument positioning was conducted at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. The results show that a telerobotic tool can improve the performance of a microsurgeon by increasing the precision with which he can position surgical instruments, but this is achieved at the cost of increased time in performing the task. We believe that this technology will extend the capabilities of microsurgeons and allow more surgeons to perform highly skilled procedures currently performed only by the best surgeons. It will also enable performance of new surgical procedures that are beyond the capabilities of even the most skilled surgeons. Copyright 1999 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

7. An Appraisal of the 1967 NDEA Institutes for Advanced Study in Industrial Arts and Their Impact upon Professional Activities of Participants and Directors.

Abstract

This study was conducted to ascertain the impact on the subsequent professional practices of institute directors and participants and to collect the opinions of these people regarding instruction, organization and administration of the 29 institutes. Mailed questionnaires were returned by 28 directors and 671 participants. Findings included: (1) Over 80 percent of the participants had changed course objectives, course scope, and reading habits, (2) 19 percent of the participants indicated new professional association memberships, and 33 percent indicated more active organizational involvement, (3) Stipend payments influenced participation more than graduate credit, (4) 87 percent of the participants found the content "high but adaptable" or "directly applicable," (5) Institute personnel were rated "good" or "outstanding" by over 60 percent of the participants, (6) Increased experimental and mass production activities were reported by 53 and 44 percent respectively, (7) 94 percent of the participants gave an overall rating of "good" or "outstanding," and (8) 80 percent felt completely free to question staffs of the institutes.
