We describe the design and performance of the near-infrared (1.51--1.70 micron), fiber-fed, multi-object (300 fibers), high resolution (R = lambda/delta lambda ~ 22,500) spectrograph built for the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). APOGEE is a survey of ~ 10^5 red giant stars that systematically sampled all Milky Way populations (bulge, disk, and halo) to study the Galaxy's chemical and kinematical history. It was part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) from 2011 -- 2014 using the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at Apache Point Observatory, New Mexico. The APOGEE-2 survey is now using the spectrograph as part of SDSS-IV, as well as a second spectrograph, a close copy of the first, operating at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. Although several fiber-fed, multi-object, high resolution spectrographs have been built for visual wavelength spectroscopy, the APOGEE spectrograph is one of the first such instruments built for observations in the near-infrared. The instrument's successful development was enabled by several key innovations, including a "gang connector" to allow simultaneous connections of 300 fibers; hermetically sealed feedthroughs to allow fibers to pass through the cryostat wall continuously; the first cryogenically deployed mosaic volume phase holographic grating; and a large refractive camera that includes mono-crystalline silicon and fused silica elements with diameters as large as ~ 400 mm. We have begun developing a new metallicity calibration for RR Lyrae stars that includes high-temperature phase regions. Our calibration is an updated and expanded version of the Delta-S, equivalent width method, but which is applicable for most phases of the pulsation, and for the hotter, shorter-period RRc stars. This calibration will be constructed from spectral observations of well studied, bright RR Lyrae stars with metallicities from published high-resolution studies, within the range $-2.5 < [Fe/H] < -0.3$. Phase information for our calibration stars were taken from the AAVSO website, and the MacAdam Student Observatory at the University of Kentucky. Low-resolution spectroscopy $(R \sim 1000)$ was obtained using the McDonald Observatory, 2.1 meter telescope. We present a calibration of the metallicity and physical parameters (temperature, luminosity, gravity, mass, radius) for RR Lyrae stars using the ugriz SDSS photometric system. Our work is based on calculations of synthetic horizontal branches (HBs), fully taking into account evolutionary effects for a wide range in metallicities and HB morphologies. We present the first V, B-V color-magnitude diagram of the Leo IV dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a faint Milky Way satellite recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have obtained B,V time-series photometry reaching about half a magnitude below the Leo IV turnoff, which we detect at V= 24.7 mag, and have performed the first study of the variable star population. We have identified three RR Lyrae stars (all fundamental-mode pulsators, RRab) and one SX Phoenicis variable in the galaxy. In the period-amplitude diagram the Leo IV RR Lyrae stars are located close to the loci of Oosterhoff type I systems and the evolved fundamental-mode RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic globular cluster M3. However, their mean pulsation period, $$=0.655 days, would suggest an Oosterhoff type II classification for this galaxy. The RR Lyrae stars trace very well the galaxy's horizontal branch, setting its average magnitude at $= 21.48 \pm 0.03$ mag (standard deviation of the mean). This leads to a distance modulus of $\mu_{0}=20.94 \pm 0.07$ mag, corresponding to a distance of $154 \pm 5$ kpc, by adopting for the Leo IV dSph a reddening $E(B-V) = 0.04 \pm 0.01$ mag and a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -2.31 $\pm$ 0.10., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Variable stars have been identified for the first time in Fornax 4, the globular cluster located near the center of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. By applying the image subtraction technique to B,V time series photometry obtained with the MagIC camera of the 6.5-m Magellan/Clay telescope and with the wide field imager of the 4-m Blanco/CTIO telescope, we detected 27 RR Lyrae stars (22 fundamental mode, 3 first overtone, and 2 double-mode pulsators) in a 2.4'x2.4' area centered on Fornax 4. The average and minimum periods of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars, = 0.594 d and P(ab,min)=0.5191 d, respectively, as well as the revised position of the cluster in the horizontal branch type--metallicity plane, all consistently point to an Oosterhoff-intermediate status for the cluster, unlike what is seen for the vast majority of Galactic globular clusters, but in agreement with previous indications for the other globular clusters in Fornax. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars located within 30 arcsec from the cluster center is =21.43 +/- 0.03 mag (sigma=0.10 mag, average on 12 stars), leading to a true distance modulus of (m-M)o=20.64 +/- 0.09 mag or (m-M)o=20.53 +/- 0.09 mag, depending on whether a low ([Fe/H]=-2.0) or a moderately high ([Fe/H]=-1.5) metallicity is adopted., Comment: Apj, in press

We present a long-term project aimed at completing the census of (bright) variable stars in Galactic globular clusters. While our main aim is to obtain a reliable assessment of the populations of RR Lyrae and type II Cepheid stars in the Galactic globular cluster system, due attention is also being paid to other types of variables, including SX Phoenicis stars, long-period variables, and eclipsing binaries., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. We present the first results of a variable star search in the field and in the globular clusters of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Variable stars were identified using the Image Subtraction Technique (Alard 2000) on time-series data obtained with the ESO 2.2 m and the Magellan 6.5 m telescopes. The variable star sample includes RR Lyrae stars, Dwarf Cepheids and Anomalous Cepheids. CCD photometry on the intermediate-band uvbyCaH-beta system is presented for the old open cluster, NGC 6253. Despite a high level of field star contamination due to its location toward the galactic center, combination of the data from the multiple color indices with the core cluster sample derived from radial star counts leads to the identification of a set of highly probable, single cluster members. Photometric analysis of a select sample of 71 turnoff stars produces a reddening value of E(b-y) = 0.190 +/-0.002 (s.e.m.) or E(B-V) = 0.260 +/- 0.003 (s.e.m.) from 71 stars. The metallicity indices, delta-m1 and delta-hk, both identify this cluster as the most metal-rich object studied on either system to date. Simple extrapolation of the available metallicity calibrations leads to [Fe/H] ranging from +0.7 to +0.9. Metal-rich isochrones with overshoot imply an age between 2.5 and 3.5 Gyr, with an apparent distance modulus between (m-M)= 11.6 and 12.2, depending upon the isochrones used. The improvement in the fit using alpha-enhanced isochrones may indicate that the cluster [Fe/H] is closer to +0.4, but the photometric indices are distorted by an elemental distribution other than a scaled solar. The galacto- centric position of the cluster, in conjunction with data for other clusters and Cepheids, is consistent with the inner disk reaching and maintaining a metallicity well above solar since the early history of the disk, unlike the solar neighborhood., Comment: Accepted for March 2003 AJ; 19 pages in preprint format; 12 compressed jpeg figures; 1 postscript table, and 1 data table accessible at http://kubarb.phsx.ukans.edu/~anthony/6253.tab1.txt
