The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

Numerous sources produce the ionization impact on the planetary atmosphere. The tropospheric cloudiness therewith is originated at such altitudes, which coincide with places of the maximum of the atmospheric ionization that caused by space radiation. Components of cosmic radiation, penetrating down to the stratospheric and tropospheric altitudes, produce in the first place the ionization of aerosols that brings to subsequent amplifying the activity of atmospheric vortices. The ionized aerosol constituent is of primary importance both in the initiation of plasma vortices and in the concentration of energy-mass by air vortices due to the humidity condensation. The ionization process is cascading, that causes the non-linear impact of penetrating rays, which amplifying with growing the air pollution. Various heterogeneities inside plasma subsystems provoke the random intensification of aperiodic electrostatic disturbances, which can exert a significant action on the development of vortices. Sometimes beaded lightning arises during thunderstorm. Using the approach of the Boltzmann kinetic equation, the characteristics of electrostatic oscillations for non-uniform plasma, are analytically derived. The analytical expressions are obtained for non-magnetized plasma. In the limits of the Earth's atmosphere, these solutions are strictly applicable to the origination of electrostatic modulations along the lines of force of the geomagnetic field and approximately applicable in cases, when the impact of the Earth's magnetic field is negligible. The explicit expressions are deduced both in the hot plasma approximation and in the cold plasma approximation. It is demonstrated that the formation of chain elements of discharge in hot inhomogeneous plasma is defined by the nonmonotonic distribution of charges and fields. In the first of two articles, we present here a novel mesoscopic micromagnetic approach for simulating materials composed of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. Starting with the atomistic modeling of quasi one-dimensional systems, we explicitly show how the material parameters for the mesoscopic model of an antiferromagnet can be derived. The comparison between magnetization profiles obtained in atomistic and mesoscopic calculations (using a Heusler alloy as an example) proves the validity of our method. This approach opens up the possibility to recover the details of the magnetization distribution in ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic materials with the resolution of a few nanometers covering length scales up to several hundreds of nanometers.

In the second part of this publication, we present simulation results for two three-dimensional models of Heusler-type alloys obtained by the mesoscopic micromagnetic approach. In the first model, we simulate the magnetization reversal of a single ferromagnetic (FM) inclusion within a monocrystalline antiferromagnetic (AFM) matrix, revealing the evolution of the complex magnetization distribution within this inclusion when the external field is changed. The main result of this ``monocrystalline'' model is the absence of any hysteretic behavior by the magnetization reversal of the FM inclusion. Hence, this model is unable to reproduce the basic experimental result for the corresponding nanocomposite -- hysteresis in the magnetization reversal of FM inclusions with a vertical shift of the corresponding loops. To explain this latter feature, in the second model we introduce a polycrystalline AFM matrix, with exchange interactions between AFM crystallites and between the FM inclusion and these crystallites. We show that within this model we can not only reproduce the hysteretic character of the remagnetization process, but also achieve a semi-quantitative agreement with the experimentally observed hysteresis loop assuming that the concentration of FM inclusions strongly fluctuates. These findings demonstrate the reliability of our enhanced micromagnetic model and set the basis for its applications in future studies of Heusler alloys and FM/AFM nanocomposites.

In the search for improved permanent magnets, fueled by the geostrategic and environmental issues associated with rare-earth-based magnets, magnetically hard (high anisotropy)-soft (high magnetization) composite magnets hold promise as alternative magnets that could replace modern permanent magnets, such as rare-earth-based and ceramic magnets, in certain applications. However, so far, the magnetic properties reported for hard-soft composites have been underwhelming. Here, an attempt to further understand the correlation between magnetic and microstructural properties in strontium ferrite-based composites, hard SrFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ (SFO) ceramics with different contents of Fe particles as soft phase, both in powder and in dense injection molded magnets, is presented. In addition, the influence of soft phase particle dimension, in the nano- and micron-sized regimes, on these properties is studied. While Fe and SFO are not exchange-coupled in our magnets, a remanence that is higher than expected is measured. In fact, in composite injection molded anisotropic (magnetically oriented) magnets, remanence is improved by 2.4% with respect to a pure ferrite identical magnet. The analysis of the experimental results in combination with micromagnetic simulations allows us to establish that the type of interaction between hard and soft phases is of a dipolar nature, and is responsible for the alignment of a fraction of the soft spins with the magnetization of the hard. The mechanism unraveled in this work has implications for the development of novel hard-soft permanent magnets.

Motivated by recent experimental polarized neutron results, we present a numerical micromagnetic study of the interfacial (intergrain) Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in nanocrystalline terbium. We demonstrate that the DMI-induced spin misalignment between adjacent nanograins is the reason for the formation of the asymmetric positive-negative pattern seen in polarized neutron scattering experiments. Analysis of the remagnetization process suggests the generic impact of the DMI on the macroscopic magnetic parameters of polycrystalline defect-rich materials.

Interval systems of linear algebraic equations (ISLAE) are considered in the context of constructing of linear models according to data with interval uncertainty. Sufficient conditions for boundedness and convexity of an admissible domain (AD) of ISLAE and its belonging to only one orthant of an $n$-dimensional space are proposed, which can be verified in polynomial time by the methods of computational linear algebra. In this case, AD ISLAE turns out to be a convex bounded polyhedron, entirely lying in the corresponding ortant. These properties of AD ISLAE allow, firstly, to find solutions to the corresponding ISLAE in polynomial time by linear programming methods (while finding a solution to ISLAE of a general form is an NP-hard problem). Secondly, the coefficients of the linear model obtained by solving the corresponding ISLAE have an analogue of the significance property of the coefficient of the linear model, since the coefficients of the linear model do not change their sign within the limits of the AD. The formulation and proof of the corresponding theorem are presented. The error estimation and convergence of an arbitrary solution of ISLAE to the normal solution of a hypothetical exact system of linear algebraic equations are also investigated. This work is dedicated to the review and perspective of the new direction that we call "Neuropunk revolution" resembling the cultural phenomenon of cyberpunk. This new phenomenon has its foundations in advances in neuromorphic technologies including memristive and bio-plausible simulations, BCI, and neurointerfaces as well as unconventional approaches to AI and computing in general. We present the review of the current state-of-the-art and our vision of near future development of scientific approaches and future technologies. We call the "Neuropunk revolution" the set of trends that in our view provide the necessary background for the new generation of approaches technologies to integrate the cybernetic objects with biological tissues in close loop system as well as robotic systems inspired by the biological processes again integrated with biological objects. We see bio-plausible simulations implemented by digital computers or spiking networks memristive hardware as promising bridge or middleware between digital and (neuro)biological domains.

Magnetic nanoparticles offer unique potential for various technological, biomedical, or environmental applications thanks to the size-, shape- and material-dependent tunability of their magnetic properties. To optimize particles for a specific application, it is crucial to interrelate their performance with their structural and magnetic properties. This review presents the advantages of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering techniques for achieving a detailed multiscale characterization of magnetic nanoparticles and their ensembles in a mesoscopic size range from 1 to a few hundred nanometers with nanometer resolution. Both X-rays and neutrons allow the ensemble-averaged determination of structural properties, such as particle morphology or particle arrangement in multilayers and 3D assemblies. Additionally, the magnetic scattering contributions enable retrieving the internal magnetization profile of the nanoparticles as well as the inter-particle moment correlations caused by interactions within dense assemblies. Most measurements are used to determine the time-averaged ensemble properties, in addition advanced small-angle scattering techniques exist that allow accessing particle and spin dynamics on various timescales. In this review, we focus on conventional small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS), X-ray and neutron reflectometry, gracing-incidence SAXS and SANS, X-ray resonant magnetic scattering, and neutron spin-echo spectroscopy techniques. For each technique, we provide a general overview, present the latest scientific results, and discuss its strengths as well as sample requirements. Finally, we give our perspectives on how future small-angle scattering experiments, especially in combination with micromagnetic simulations, could help to optimize the performance of magnetic nanoparticles for specific applications., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures

We present a numerical algorithm for predicting the optimal conditions for the effective alignment of magnetic particles in dense powders during the compactization process using an externally applied field. This task is especially important for the permanent magnets development due to the fact that alignment of anisotropy axes of nanocomposite grains increases both remanence and coercivity of magnetic materials. In contrast to previously known methods where magnetic moment of each particle was assumed to be 'fixed' with respect to the particle itself, our approach takes into account the (field-dependent) deviation of this moment from the particle anisotropy axis that occurs even for magnetically 'hard' particles possessing a strong mechanical contact. We show, that this deviation leads to the existence of the optimal value of the applied field for which the particle orientation (or alignment) time is minimal. The influence of the external pressure and internal mechanical friction on the details of the compactization/orientation process is also studied.

In the quest to image the three-dimensional magnetization structure we show that the technique of magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is highly sensitive to the details of the internal spin structure of nanoparticles. By combining SANS with numerical micromagnetic computations we study the transition from single-domain to multi-domain behavior in nanoparticles and its implications for the ensuing magnetic SANS cross section. Above the critical single-domain size we find that the cross section and the related correlation function cannot be described anymore with the uniform particle model, resulting e.g. in deviations from the well-known Guinier law. We identify a clear signature for the occurrence of a vortex-like spin structure at remanence. The micromagnetic approach to magnetic SANS bears great potential for future investigations, since it provides fundamental insights into the mesoscale magnetization profile of nanoparticles., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We report the results of an unpolarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study on Mn-Zn ferrite (MZFO) magnetic nanoparticles with the aim to elucidate the interplay between their particle size and the magnetization configuration. We study different samples of single-crystalline MZFO nanoparticles with average diameters ranging between 8 to 80 nm, and demonstrate that the smallest particles are homogeneously magnetized. However, with increasing nanoparticle size, we observe the transition from a uniform to a nonuniform magnetization state. Field-dependent results for the correlation function confirm that the internal spin disorder is suppressed with increasing field strength. The experimental SANS data are supported by the results of micromagnetic simulations, which confirm an increasing inhomogeneity of the magnetization profile of the nanoparticle with increasing size. The results presented demonstrate the unique ability of SANS to detect even very small deviations of the magnetization state from the homogeneous one., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

The present document discusses plans for a compact, next-generation multi-purpose detector at the LHC as a follow-up to the present ALICE experiment. The aim is to build a nearly massless barrel detector consisting of truly cylindrical layers based on curved wafer-scale ultra-thin silicon sensors with MAPS technology, featuring an unprecedented low material budget of 0.05% X$_0$ per layer, with the innermost layers possibly positioned inside the beam pipe. In addition to superior tracking and vertexing capabilities over a wide momentum range down to a few tens of MeV/$c$, the detector will provide particle identification via time-of-flight determination with about 20~ps resolution. In addition, electron and photon identification will be performed in a separate shower detector. The proposed detector is conceived for studies of pp, pA and AA collisions at luminosities a factor of 20 to 50 times higher than possible with the upgraded ALICE detector, enabling a rich physics program ranging from measurements with electromagnetic probes at ultra-low transverse momenta to precision physics in the charm and beauty sector., Comment: Input to the 2020 Update of the European Particle Physics Strategy

In this paper, the resistive switching and neuromorphic behavior of memristive devices based on parylene, a polymer both low-cost and safe for the human body, is comprehensively studied. The Metal/Parylene/ITO sandwich structures were prepared by means of the standard gas phase surface polymerization method with different top active metal electrodes (Ag, Al, Cu or Ti of about 500 nm thickness). These organic memristive devices exhibit excellent performance: low switching voltage (down to 1 V), large OFF/ON resistance ratio (about 10^3), retention (> 10^4 s) and high multilevel resistance switching (at least 16 stable resistive states in the case of Cu electrodes). We have experimentally shown that parylene-based memristive elements can be trained by a biologically inspired spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) mechanism. The obtained results have been used to implement a simple neuromorphic network model of classical conditioning. The described advantages allow considering parylene-based organic memristors as prospective devices for hardware realization of spiking artificial neuron networks capable of supervised and unsupervised learning and suitable for biomedical applications., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We propose a road-map to experimental implementation of cytoskeleton-based computing devices. An overall concept is described in the following. Collision-based cytoskeleton computers implement logical gates via interactions between travelling localisation (voltage solitons on AF/MT chains and AF/MT polymerisation wave fronts). Cytoskeleton networks are grown via programmable polymerisation. Data are fed into the AF/MT computing networks via electrical and optical means. Data signals are travelling localisations (solitons, conformational defects) at the network terminals. The computation is implemented via collisions between the localisations at structural gates (branching sites) of the AF/MT network. The results of the computation are recorded electrically and/or optically at the output terminals of the protein networks. We demonstrate how micromagnetic simulations can be employed in order to characterize and analyze the magnetic microstructure of nanocomposites. For the example of nanocrystalline Nd$-$Fe$-$B, which is a potential material for future permanent-magnet applications, we have compared three different models for the micromagnetic analysis of this material class: (i) a description of the nanocomposite microstructure in terms of Stoner-Wohlfarth particles with and without the magnetodipolar interaction; (ii) a model based on the core-shell representation of the nanograins; (iii) the latter model including a contribution of superparamagnetic clusters. The relevant parameter spaces have been systematically scanned with the aim to establish which micromagnetic approach can most adequately describe experimental data for this material. According to our results, only the last, most sophisticated model is able to provide an excellent agreement with the measured hysteresis loop. The presented methodology is generally applicable to multiphase magnetic nanocomposites and it highligths the complex interrelationship between the microstructure, magnetic interactions, and the macroscopic magnetic properties.

We discuss possible designs and prototypes of computing systems that could be based on morphological development of roots, interaction of roots, and analog electrical computation with plants, and plant-derived electronic components. In morphological plant processors data are represented by initial configuration of roots and configurations of sources of attractants and repellents; results of computation are represented by topology of the roots' network. Computation is implemented by the roots following gradients of attractants and repellents, as well as interacting with each other. Problems solvable by plant roots, in principle, include shortest-path, minimum spanning tree, Voronoi diagram, $\alpha$-shapes, convex subdivision of concave polygons. Electrical properties of plants can be modified by loading the plants with functional nanoparticles or coating parts of plants of conductive polymers. Thus, we are in position to make living variable resistors, capacitors, operational amplifiers, multipliers, potentiometers and fixed-function generators. The electrically modified plants can implement summation, integration with respect to time, inversion, multiplication, exponentiation, logarithm, division. Mathematical and engineering problems to be solved can be represented in plant root networks of resistive or reaction elements. In this paper we perform the detailed numerical analysis of remagnetization processes in nanocomposite magnetic materials consisting of magnetically hard grains (i.e. grains made of a material with a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy) embedded into a magnetically soft phase. Such materials are widely used for the production of permanent magnets, because they combine the high remanence with the large coercivity. We perform simulations of nanocomposites with Sr-ferrite as the hard phase and Fe or Ni as the soft phase, concentrating our efforts on analyzing the effects of ({\it i}) the imperfect intergrain exchange and ({\it ii}) the non-spherical shape of hard grains. We demonstrate that - in contrast to the common belief - the maximal energy product is achieved not for systems with the perfect intergrain exchange, but for materials where this exchange is substantially weakened. We also show that the main parameters of the hysteresis loop - remanence, coercivity and the energy product - exhibit non-trivial dependencies on the shape of hard grains, and provide detailed explanations for our results. Simulation predictions obtained in this work open new ways for the optimization of materials for permanent magnets.

In inhomogeneous bulk ferromagnets, the dominating sources of spin disorder are related to spatial variations of (i) the magnitude of the local saturation magnetization and of (ii) the magnitude and/or direction of the magnetic anisotropy field. For the particular example of a porous ferromagnet, where the magnetization inhomogeneity is at maximum, we demonstrate, by means of experimental neutron scattering data and micromagnetic simulations, the anisotropic character of magnetization fluctuations induced by the dipolar interaction.

In order to maintain the security of power system at an appropriate level and at low cost, it is essential to accurately assess the steady-state stability limits and power flow feasibility boundaries, i.e., the power system marginal states (MS). This paper is devoted to creation and theoretical substantiation of the MS model based on nonlinear programming (NLP-MS model), its research to reveal MS properties which promote better MS understanding, to evolution of the theory of power systems and MS, to elaboration of more effective algorithms of MS problem solution. We comment on the Letter "Origin of surface canting within $\mathrm{Fe}_3\mathrm{O}_4$ nanoparticles" by K.L. Krycka et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bf 113$, 147203 (2014)].

A memristor is often identified by showing its distinctive pinched hysteresis curve and testing for the effect of frequency. The hysteresis size should relate to frequency and shrink to zero as the frequency approaches infinity. Although mathematically understood, the material causes for this are not well known. The d.c. response of the memristor is a decaying curve with its own timescale. We show via mathematical reasoning that this decaying curve when transformed to a.c. leads to the frequency effect by considering a descretized curve. We have analyzed magnetic-field-dependent small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) data of soft magnetic two-phase nanocomposite ferromagnets in terms of a recent micromagnetic theory for the magnetic SANS cross section [D. Honecker and A. Michels, Phys. Rev. B $\mathbf{87}$, 224426 (2013)]. The approach yields a value for the average exchange-stiffness constant and provides the Fourier coefficients of the magnetic anisotropy field and magnetostatic field, which is related to jumps of the magnetization at internal interfaces.

Non-linear magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic nanoelements excited by the spin-polarized dc-current is one of the most intensively studied phenomena in solid state magnetism. Despite immense efforts, synchronization of oscillations induced in several such nanoelements (spin-torque driven nanooscillators, or STNO) still represents a major challenge both from the fundamental and technological points of view. In this paper we propose a system where synchronization of any number of STNOs, represented by magnetization vortices inside squared nanoelements, can be easily achieved. Using full-scale micromagnetic simulations we show that synchronization of these STNOs is extremely dynamically stable due to their very large coupling energy provided by the magnetodipolar interaction. Finally, we demonstrate that our concept allows robust synchronization of an arbitrary number of STNOs (arranged either as a 1D chain or as a 2D array), even when current supplying nanocontacts have a broad size distribution.

Memristors are promising next-generation memory candidates that are nonvolatile, possess low power requirements and are capable of nanoscale fabrication. In this article we physically realise and describe the use of organic memristors in designing statefull boolean logic gates for the AND OR and NOT operations. The output of these gates is analog and dependent on the length of time that suitable charge is applied to the inputs, displaying a learning property. Results may be also interpreted in a traditional binary manner through use of a suitable thresholding function at the output. The memristive property of the gate allows the for the production of analog outputs that vary based on the charge-dependent nonvolatile state of the memristor. We provide experimental results of physical fabrication of three types of logic gate. A simulation of a one-bit full adder comprised of memristive logic gates is also included, displaying varying response to two distinct input patterns.

Based on combination of experimental measurements and first-principles calculations we report a novel carbon-based catalytic material and describe significant acceleration of the hydrogenation of magnesium at room temperature in presence of nickel nanoparticles wrapped in multilayer graphene. Increase of the rate of magnesium hydrogenation in contrast to the mix of graphite and nickel nanoparticles evidences intrinsic catalytic properties of explored nanocomposites. Results of simulations demonstrate that the doping from metal substrate and the presence of Stone-Wales defects turn multilayer graphene from chemically inert to chemically active mode. The recent development of a micromagnetic simulation methodology - suitable for multiphase magnetic nanocomposites - permits the computation of the magnetic microstructure and of the associated magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) cross section of these materials. In this review article we summarize results on the micromagnetic simulation of magnetic SANS from two-phase nanocomposites. The decisive advantage of this approach resides in the possibility to srutinize the individual magnetization Fourier contributions to the total magnetic SANS cross section, rather than their sum, which is generally obtained from experiment. The procedure furnishes unique and fundamental information regarding magnetic neutron scattering from nanomagnets.

We have used numerical micromagnetics for the calculation of the magnetic (small-angle) neutron scattering cross section of nanocomposites. The novel aspect of our approach consists in the possibility to study the applied-field dependence of the individual contributions to the total magnetic scattering. Such a micromagnetic tool ideally complements neutron experiments in which one generally measures only a weighted sum of the Fourier components of the magnetization. The procedure furnishes unique and fundamental information regarding the magnetic microstructure and corresponding magnetic scattering from nanomagnets. A new methodology for micromagnetic simulations of magnetic nanocomposites is presented. The methodology is especially suitable for simulations of two-phase composites consisting of magnetically hard inclusions in a soft magnetic matrix phase. The proposed technique allows to avoid the unnecessary discretization of the 'hard' inclusions (these are normally in a single-domain state), but enables an arbitrary fine discretization of the 'soft' phase. The method is applied to the determination of the equilibrium magnetization state of an iron-based nanocomposite from the Nanoperm (FeZrBCu) family of alloys and to the calculation of the corresponding small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) cross-section. For this highly interesting material, the results of our simulations exhibit a remarkable agreement with the nontrivial 'clover-leaf' SANS cross-sections observed experimentally (A. We report the fabrication and properties of a polymeric memristor, i.e. an electronic element with memory of its previous history. We show how this element can be viewed as a functional analog of a synaptic junction and how it can be used as a critical node in adaptive networks capable of bioinspired intelligent signal processing.

The influence of wave frequency variation on the anomalous cyclotron resonance $\omega=\omega_{Be}+kv_{\|}$ interaction (ACRI) of energetic electrons with a ducted finite amplitude whistler-mode wave propagating through the so-called transient plasma layer (TPL) in the magnetosphere or in the ionosphere is studied both analytically and numerically. The anomalous cyclotron resonance interaction takes place in the case when the whistler-mode wave amplitude $B_{W}$ is consistent with the gradient of magnetic field $\overrightarrow{B_0}$. The region of phase space occupied by anomalously interacting energetic electrons (synchronous particles) is determined. The efficiencies of both the pitch-angle scattering of resonant electrons and their transverse acceleration are studied and the efficiencies dependence on the magnitude and sign of the wave frequency drift is considered. It has been shown that in the case of ACRI occuring under conditions relevant to VLF-emission in the magnetosphere, the energy and pitch-angle changes of synchronous electrons may be enchanced by a factor $10^2 \div 10^3$ in comparison with ones for nonsynchronous resonant electrons.
