Dielectric capillaries are widely used to generate plasmas for plasma wakefield acceleration. When a relativistic drive bunch travels through a capillary with misaligned trajectory with respect to the capillary axis, it is deflected by the effect of the dielectric transverse wakefields it drives. We experimentally show that the deflection effect increases along the bunch and with larger misalignment, and we investigate the decay of dielectric wakefields by measuring the effect on the front of a trailing bunch. The space-charge field of a relativistic charged bunch propagating in plasma is screened due to the presence of mobile charge carriers. We experimentally investigate such screening by measuring the effect of dielectric wakefields driven by the bunch in a uncoated dielectric capillary where the plasma is confined. We show that the plasma screens the space-charge field and therefore suppresses the dielectric wakefields when the distance between the bunch and the dielectric surface is much larger than the plasma skin depth. Before full screening is reached, the effects of dielectric and plasma wakefields are present simultaneously.

We report tunneling spectroscopy and transport measurements in superconducting Al and ferromagnetic-insulator EuS bilayers. The samples display remanent spin-splitting, roughly half the superconducting gap, and supercurrent transport above the average paramagnetic limit. We interpret this behavior as arising from the interplay between two characteristic length scales: the superconducting coherence length, $\xi$, and the magnetic domain size, $d$. By comparing experimental results to a theoretical model, we find $\xi/d \approx 10$. In this regime, spin-averaging across the micromagnetic configuration can locally suppress superconductivity, resulting in percolative supercurrent flow., Comment: 15 pages, 4+7 figures

Particle-based fluid simulations have emerged as a powerful tool for solving the Navier-Stokes equations, especially in cases that include intricate physics and free surfaces. The recent addition of machine learning methods to the toolbox for solving such problems is pushing the boundary of the quality vs. speed tradeoff of such numerical simulations. In this work, we lead the way to Lagrangian fluid simulators compatible with deep learning frameworks, and propose JAX-SPH - a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) framework implemented in JAX. JAX-SPH builds on the code for dataset generation from the LagrangeBench project (Toshev et al., 2023) and extends this code in multiple ways: (a) integration of further key SPH algorithms, (b) restructuring the code toward a Python package, (c) verification of the gradients through the solver, and (d) demonstration of the utility of the gradients for solving inverse problems as well as a Solver-in-the-Loop application. Safe and reliable disclosure of information from confidential data is a challenging statistical problem. A common approach considers the generation of synthetic data, to be disclosed instead of the original data. Efficient approaches ought to deal with the trade-off between reliability and confidentiality of the released data. Ultimately, the aim is to be able to reproduce as accurately as possible statistical analysis of the original data using the synthetic one. Bayesian networks is a model-based approach that can be used to parsimoniously estimate the underlying distribution of the original data and generate synthetic datasets. These ought to not only approximate the results of analyses with the original data but also robustly quantify the uncertainty involved in the approximation. This paper proposes a fully Bayesian approach to generate and analyze synthetic data based on the posterior predictive distribution of statistics of the synthetic data, allowing for efficient uncertainty quantification. The methodology makes use of probability properties of the model to devise a computationally efficient algorithm to obtain the target predictive distributions via Monte Carlo. Model parsimony is handled by proposing a general class of penalizing priors for Bayesian network models. Finally, the efficiency and applicability of the proposed methodology is empirically investigated through simulated and real examples.

The fusion of non-Abelian anyons or topological defects is a fundamental operation in measurement-only topological quantum computation. In topological superconductors, this operation amounts to a determination of the shared fermion parity of Majorana zero modes. As a step towards this, we implement a single-shot interferometric measurement of fermion parity in indium arsenide-aluminum heterostructures with a gate-defined nanowire. The interferometer is formed by tunnel-coupling the proximitized nanowire to quantum dots. The nanowire causes a state-dependent shift of these quantum dots' quantum capacitance of up to 1 fF. Our quantum capacitance measurements show flux h/2e-periodic bimodality with a signal-to-noise ratio of 1 in 3.7 $\mu$s at optimal flux values. From the time traces of the quantum capacitance measurements, we extract a dwell time in the two associated states that is longer than 1 ms at in-plane magnetic fields of approximately 2 T. These results are consistent with a measurement of the fermion parity encoded in a pair of Majorana zero modes that are separated by approximately 3 $\mu$m and subjected to a low rate of poisoning by non-equilibrium quasiparticles. Predicting flashback represents a pivotal challenge in the development of innovative perforated burners for household appliances, especially for substituting natural gas with hydrogen as fuel. Most existing numerical studies have utilized two-dimensional (2D) simulations to investigate flashback in these burners, primarily to reduce computational costs. However, the inherent complexity of flashback phenomena suggests that 2D models may inadequately capture the flame dynamics, potentially leading to inaccurate estimations of flashback limits. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) simulations are employed to examine the impact of the actual slit shapes on the flashback velocities of hydrogen-premixed flames. Steady-state simulations are conducted to compute flashback velocities for three equivalence ratios ($\phi=0.6$, $0.8$, and $1.0$), investigating slits with fixed width and varying lengths. Additionally, transient simulations are performed to investigate the flashback dynamics. The results are compared with those from 2D configurations to assess the reliability of the infinite slit approximation. For stable flames, 2D simulations underpredict the burner plate temperature compared to slits with lengths typical of practical devices but match the 3D results as $L\to\infty$. Conversely, flashback velocities are consistently underpredicted in 2D simulations compared to 3D simulations, even as $L\to\infty$. This is due to the critical role of the slit ends in flashback dynamics, where preferential diffusion, the Soret effect, and higher preheating due to a higher surface-to-volume ratio trigger the initiation of flashback in those regions. These findings underscore the necessity of employing 3D simulations to accurately estimate the flashback velocities in domestic perforated burners.

Hydrogen has emerged as a promising option for promoting decarbonization in various sectors by serving as a replacement for natural gas while retaining the combustion-based conversion system. However, its higher reactivity compared to natural gas introduces a significant risk of flashback. This study investigates the impact of operating and geometry parameters on flashback phenomena in multi-slit burners fed with hydrogen-methane-air mixtures. For this purpose, transient numerical simulations, which take into account conjugate heat transfer between the fluid and the solid walls, are coupled with stochastic sensitivity analysis based on Generalized Polynomial Chaos. This allows deriving comprehensive maps of flashback velocities and burner temperatures within the parameter space of hydrogen content, equivalence ratio, and slit width, using a limited number of numerical simulations. Moreover, we assess the influence of different parameters and their interactions on flashback propensity. The ranges we investigate encompass highly H2-enriched lean mixtures, ranging from 80% to 100% H2 by volume, with equivalence ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.0. We also consider slit widths that are typically encountered in burners for end-user devices, ranging from 0.5 mm to 1.2 mm. The study highlights the dominant role of preferential diffusion in affecting flashback physics and propensity as parameters vary, including significant enrichment close to the burner plate due to the Soret effect. These findings hold promise for driving the design and optimization of perforated burners, enabling their safe and efficient operation in practical end-user applications.

Machine learning has been successfully applied to grid-based PDE modeling in various scientific applications. However, learned PDE solvers based on Lagrangian particle discretizations, which are the preferred approach to problems with free surfaces or complex physics, remain largely unexplored. We present LagrangeBench, the first benchmarking suite for Lagrangian particle problems, focusing on temporal coarse-graining. In particular, our contribution is: (a) seven new fluid mechanics datasets (four in 2D and three in 3D) generated with the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method including the Taylor-Green vortex, lid-driven cavity, reverse Poiseuille flow, and dam break, each of which includes different physics like solid wall interactions or free surface, (b) efficient JAX-based API with various recent training strategies and three neighbor search routines, and (c) JAX implementation of established Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) like GNS and SEGNN with baseline results. Finally, to measure the performance of learned surrogates we go beyond established position errors and introduce physical metrics like kinetic energy MSE and Sinkhorn distance for the particle distribution. Missing data arises when certain values are not recorded or observed for variables of interest. However, most of the statistical theory assume complete data availability. To address incomplete databases, one approach is to fill the gaps corresponding to the missing information based on specific criteria, known as imputation. In this study, we propose a novel imputation methodology for databases with non-response units by leveraging additional information from fully observed auxiliary variables. We assume that the variables included in the database are continuous and that the auxiliary variables, which are fully observed, help to improve the imputation capacity of the model. Within a fully Bayesian framework, our method utilizes a flexible mixture of multivariate normal distributions to jointly model the response and auxiliary variables. By employing the principles of Gaussian Cluster-Weighted modeling, we construct a predictive model to impute the missing values by leveraging information from the covariates. We present simulation studies and a real data illustration to demonstrate the imputation capacity of our method across various scenarios, comparing it to other methods in the literature, Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

This paper proposes a methodology for exploring how linguistic behaviour on social media can be used to explore societal reactions to important events such as those that transpired during the SARS CoV2 pandemic. In particular, where spatial and temporal aspects of events are important features. Our methodology consists of grounding spatial-temporal categories in tweet usage trends using time-series analysis and clustering. Salient terms in each category were then identified through qualitative comparative analysis based on scaled f-scores aggregated into hand-coded categories. To exemplify this approach, we conducted a case study on the first wave of the coronavirus in Italy. We used our proposed methodology to explore existing psychological observations which claimed that physical distance from events affects what is communicated about them. We confirmed these findings by showing that the epicentre of the disease and peripheral regions correspond to clear time-series clusters and that those living in the epicentre of the SARS CoV2 outbreak were more focused on solidarity and policy than those from more peripheral regions. Furthermore, we also found that temporal categories corresponded closely to policy changes during the handling of the pandemic.

We contribute to the vastly growing field of machine learning for engineering systems by demonstrating that equivariant graph neural networks have the potential to learn more accurate dynamic-interaction models than their non-equivariant counterparts. We benchmark two well-studied fluid-flow systems, namely 3D decaying Taylor-Green vortex and 3D reverse Poiseuille flow, and evaluate the models based on different performance measures, such as kinetic energy or Sinkhorn distance. In addition, we investigate different embedding methods of physical-information histories for equivariant models. In this article, we share our experience related to the new photo-injector commissioning at the SPARC\_LAB test facility. The new photo-injector was installed into an existing machine and our goal was not only to improve the final beam parameters themselves but to improve the machine handling in day-to-day operations as well. Thus, besides the pure beam characterization, this article contains information about the improvements, that were introduced into the new photo-injector design from the machine maintenance point of view, and the benefits, that we gained by using the new technique to assemble the gun itself.

In this paper the use of betatron radiation as a seed for the Free Electron Laser (FEL) is presented. The scheme shown can be adopted from all FEL driven by plasma accelerated electron beams via Particle or Laser Wake Field Acceleration. Intense radiation in the region of X ray characterized by a broad spectrum, the betatron radiation, is indeed produced in the plasma acceleration process from the electron passing through the ionized gas. We report the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) discovery of a three-planet system around the bright Sun-like star HD~22946(V=8.3 mag),also known as TIC~100990000, located 63 parsecs away.The system was observed by TESS in Sectors 3, 4, 30 and 31 and two planet candidates, labelled TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs) 411.01 (planet $c$) and 411.02 (planet $b$), were identified on orbits of 9.57 and 4.04 days, respectively. In this work, we validate the two planets and recover an additional single transit-like signal in the light curve, which suggests the presence of a third transiting planet with a longer period of about 46 days.We assess the veracity of the TESS transit signals and use follow-up imaging and time series photometry to rule out false positive scenarios, including unresolved binary systems, nearby eclipsing binaries or background/foreground stars contaminating the light curves. Parallax measurements from Gaia EDR3, together with broad-band photometry and spectroscopic follow-up by TFOP allowed us to constrain the stellar parameters of TOI-411, including its radius of$1.157\pm0.025R_\odot$. Adopting this value, we determined the radii for the three exoplanet candidates and found that planet $b$ is a super-Earth, with a radius of $1.72\pm0.10R_\oplus$, while planet $c$ and $d$ are sub-Neptunian planets, with radii of$2.74\pm0.14R_\oplus$ and $3.23\pm0.19R_\oplus$ respectively. By using dynamical simulations, we assessed the stability of the system and evaluated the possibility of the presence of other undetected, non-transiting planets by investigating its dynamical packing. We find that the system is dynamically stable and potentially unpacked, with enough space to host at least one more planet between $c$ and $d$.(Abridged), Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures. We report supercurrent transport measurements in hybrid Josephson junctions comprised of semiconducting InAs nanowires with epitaxial ferromagnetic insulator EuS and superconducting Al coatings. The wires display a hysteretic superconducting window close to the coercivity, away from zero external magnetic field. Using a multi-interferometer setup, we measure the current-phase relation of multiple magnetic junctions and find an abrupt switch between $\pi$ and 0 phases within the superconducting window. We attribute the 0-$\pi$ transition to the discrete flipping of the EuS domains and provide a qualitative theory showing that a sizable exchange field can polarize the junction and lead to the supercurrent reversal. Both $0$ and $\pi$ phases can be realized at zero external field by demagnetizing the wire.

Missing data theory deals with the statistical methods in the occurrence of missing data. Missing data occurs when some values are not stored or observed for variables of interest. However, most of the statistical theory assumes that data is fully observed. An alternative to deal with incomplete databases is to fill in the spaces corresponding to the missing information based on some criteria, this technique is called imputation. We introduce a new imputation methodology for databases with univariate missing patterns based on additional information from fully-observed auxiliary variables. We assume that the non-observed variable is continuous, and that auxiliary variables assist to improve the imputation capacity of the model. In a fully Bayesian framework, our method uses a flexible mixture of multivariate normal distributions to model the response and the auxiliary variables jointly. Under this framework, we use the properties of Gaussian Cluster-Weighted modeling to construct a predictive model to impute the missing values using the information from the covariates. Simulations studies and a real data illustration are presented to show the method imputation capacity under a variety of scenarios and in comparison to other literature methods.

Social dialogue, the foundation of our democracies, is currently threatened by disinformation and partisanship, with their disrupting role on individual and collective awareness and detrimental effects on decision-making processes. Despite a great deal of attention to the news sphere itself, little is known about the subtle interplay between the offer and the demand for information. Still, a broader perspective on the news ecosystem, including both the producers and the consumers of information, is needed to build new tools to assess the health of the infosphere. Here, we combine in the same framework news supply, as mirrored by a fairly complete Italian news database - partially annotated for fake news, and news demand, as captured through the Google Trends data for Italy. Our investigation focuses on the temporal and semantic interplay of news, fake news, and searches in several domains, including the virus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Two main results emerge. First, disinformation is extremely reactive to people's interests and tends to thrive, especially when there is a mismatch between what people are interested in and what news outlets provide. Second, a suitably defined index can assess the level of disinformation only based on the available volumes of news and searches. Although our results mainly concern the Coronavirus subject, we provide hints that the same findings can have more general applications. We contend these results can be a powerful asset in informing campaigns against disinformation and providing news outlets and institutions with potentially relevant strategies.

Next-generation plasma-based accelerators can push electron beams to GeV energies within centimetre distances. The plasma, excited by a driver pulse, is indeed able to sustain huge electric fields that can efficiently accelerate a trailing witness bunch, which was experimentally demonstrated on multiple occasions. Thus, the main focus of the current research is being shifted towards achieving a high quality of the beam after the plasma acceleration. In this letter we present beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration experiment, where initially preformed high-quality witness beam was accelerated inside the plasma and characterized. In this experiment the witness beam quality after the acceleration was maintained on high level, with $0.2\%$ final energy spread and $3.8~\mu m$ resulting normalized transverse emittance after the acceleration. In this article, for the first time to our knowledge, the emittance of the PWFA beam was directly measured.

Superconductors that possess both broken spatial inversion symmetry and spin-orbit interactions exhibit a mix of spin singlet and triplet pairing. Here, we report on measurements of the superconducting properties of electron-doped, strained SrTiO3 films. These films have an enhanced superconducting transition temperature and were previously shown to undergo a transition to a polar phase prior to becoming superconducting. We show that some films show signatures of an unusual superconducting state, such as an in-plane critical field that is higher than both the paramagnetic and orbital pair breaking limits. Moreover, nonreciprocal transport, which reflects the ratio of odd versus even pairing interactions, is observed. Together, these characteristics indicate that these films provide a tunable platform for investigations of unconventional superconductivity.

Time-Of-Flight (TOF) methods are very effective to detect particles accelerated in laser-plasma interactions, but they shows significant limitations when used in experiments with high energy and intensity lasers, where both high-energy ions and remarkable levels of ElectroMagnetic Pulses (EMPs) in the radiofrequency-microwave range are generated. Here we describe a novel advanced diagnostic method for the characterization of protons accelerated by intense matter interactions with high-energy and high-intensity ultra-short laser pulses up to the femtosecond and even future attosecond range. The method employs a stacked diamond detector structure and the TOF technique, featuring high sensitivity, high resolution, high radiation hardness and high signal-to-noise ratio in environments heavily affected by remarkable EMP fields. A detailed study on the use, the optimization and the properties of a single module of the stack is here also described for an experiment where a fast diamond detector is employed in an highly EMP-polluted environment. Accurate calibrated spectra of accelerated protons are presented from an experiment with the femtosecond Flame laser (beyond 100 TW power and ~$10^{19}$ W/cm$^2$ intensity) interacting with thin foil targets. (001)-oriented thin films of the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal cadmium arsenide can realize a quantum spin Hall insulator and other kinds of topological physics, all within the flexible architecture of epitaxial heterostructures. Here, we report a method for growing (001) cadmium arsenide films using molecular beam epitaxy. The introduction of a thin indium arsenide wetting layer improves surface morphology and structural characteristics, as measured by x-ray diffraction and reflectivity, atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The electron mobility of 50-nm-thick films is found to be 9300 cm2/Vs at 2 K, comparable to the highest-quality films grown in the conventional (112) orientation. This work demonstrates a simple experimental framework for exploring topological phases that are predicted to exist in proximity to the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal phase.

In a Weyl orbit, the Fermi arc surface states on opposite surfaces of the topological semimetal are connected through the bulk Weyl or Dirac nodes. Having a real-space component, these orbits accumulate a sample-size-dependent phase. Following recent work on the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal cadmium arsenide (Cd3As2), we have sought evidence for this thickness-dependent effect in quantum oscillations and quantum Hall plateaus in (112)-oriented Cd3As2 thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We compare quantum transport in films of varying thickness at apparently identical gate-tuned carrier concentrations and find no clear dependence of the relative phase of the quantum oscillations on the sample thickness. We show that small variations in carrier densities, difficult to detect in low-field Hall measurements, lead to shifts in quantum oscillations that are commensurate with previously reported phase shifts. Future claims of Weyl orbits based on the thickness dependence of quantum transport data require additional studies that demonstrate that these competing effects have been disentangled.

Many applications for topological insulators (TIs) as well as new phenomena require devices with reduced dimensions. While much progress has been made to realize thin films of TIs with low bulk carrier density, nanostructures have not yet been reported with similar properties, despite the fact that size confinement should help reduce contributions from bulk carriers. Here we demonstrate that Bi2Se3 nanoribbons, grown by a simple catalyst-free physical-vapour deposition, have inherently low bulk carrier densities, and can be further made bulk-free by size confinement, thus revealing the high mobility topological surface states. Magneto transport and Hall conductance measurements, in single nanoribbons, show that at thicknesses below 30nm the bulk transport is completely suppressed which is supported by self-consistent band-bending calculations. The results highlight the importance of material growth and geometrical confinement to properly exploit the unique properties of the topological surface states.

Topological superconductivity is central to a variety of novel phenomena involving the interplay between topologically ordered phases and broken-symmetry states. The key ingredient is an unconventional order parameter, with an orbital component containing a chiral $p_x$ + i$p_y$ wave term. Here we present phase-sensitive measurements, based on the quantum interference in nanoscale Josephson junctions, realized by using Bi$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator. We demonstrate that the induced superconductivity is unconventional and consistent with a sign-changing order parameter, such as a chiral $p_x$ + i$p_y$ component. The magnetic field pattern of the junctions shows a dip at zero externally applied magnetic field, which is an incontrovertible signature of the simultaneous existence of 0 and $\pi$ coupling within the junction, inherent to a non trivial order parameter phase. The nano-textured morphology of the Bi$_2$Te$_3$ flakes, and the dramatic role played by thermal strain are the surprising key factors for the display of an unconventional induced order parameter., Comment: 47 pages, 7 figures in the main text and 12 figures in the supplementary material

Multi MeV protons \cite{snavely2000intense} and heavier ions are emitted by thin foils irradiated by high-intensity lasers, due to the huge accelerating fields, up to several teraelectronvolt per meter, at sub-picosecond timescale \cite{dubois2014target}. The evolution of these huge fields is not well understood till today. Here we report, for the first time, direct and temporally resolved measurements of the electric fields produced by the interaction of a short-pulse high-intensity laser with solid targets. The results, obtained with a sub-$100$ fs temporal diagnostics, show that such fields build-up in few hundreds of femtoseconds and lasts after several picoseconds.

Two-dimensional states in confined thin films of the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 are probed by transport and capacitance measurements under applied magnetic and electric fields. The results establish the two-dimensional Dirac electronic spectrum of these states. We observe signatures of p-type conduction in the two-dimensional states as the Fermi level is tuned across their charge neutrality point and the presence of a zero energy Landau level, all of which indicate topologically non-trivial states. The resistance at the charge neutrality point is approximately h/e2 and increases rapidly under the application of a magnetic field. The results open many possibilities for gate-tunable topological devices and for the exploration of novel physics in the zero energy Landau level., Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev. B

Plasma wakefield acceleration is the most promising acceleration technique for compact and cheap accelerators, thanks to the high accelerating gradients achievable. Nevertheless, this approach still suffers of shot-to-shot instabilities, mostly related to experimental parameters fluctuations. Therefore, the use of single shot diagnostics is needed to properly understand the acceleration mechanism. In this work, we present two diagnostics to probe electron beams from laser-plasma interactions, one relying on Electro Optical Sampling (EOS) for laser-solid matter interactions, the other one based on Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) for single shot measurements of the transverse emittance of plasma accelerated electron beams, both developed at the SPARC_LAB Test Facility.

The magnetotransport properties of epitaxial films of Cd3As2, a paradigm three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, are investigated. We show that an energy gap opens in the bulk electronic states of sufficiently thin films and, at low temperatures, carriers residing in surface states dominate the electrical transport. The carriers in these states are sufficiently mobile to give rise to a quantized Hall effect. The sharp quantization demonstrates surface transport that is virtually free of parasitic bulk conduction and paves the way for novel quantum transport studies in this class of topological materials. We report on the observation of a possible topological Hall effect in thin films of the itinerant ferromagnet Eu1-xSmxTiO3. EuTiO3 and Eu0.955Sm0.045TiO3 films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The EuTiO3 film is insulating. The Hall resistivity of the Eu0.955Sm0.045TiO3 films exhibits the anomalous Hall effect below the Curie temperature of ~ 5 K as well as additional features that appear at 2 K. It is shown that these features are magnetic in origin and consistent with the topological Hall effect seen in materials systems with topologically nontrivial spin textures, such as skyrmions. The results open up interesting possibilities for epitaxial hybrid heterostructures that combine topological magnetic states, tunable carrier densities, and other phenomena., Comment: Accepted, Appl. We have identified anomalous behavior of the escape rate out of the zero-voltage state in Josephson junctions with a high critical current density Jc. For this study we have employed YBa2Cu3O7-x grain boundary junctions, which span a wide range of Jc and have appropriate electrodynamical parameters. Such high Jc junctions, when hysteretic, do not switch from the superconducting to the normal state following the expected stochastic Josephson distribution, despite having standard Josephson properties such as a Fraunhofer magnetic field pattern. The switching current distributions (SCDs) are consistent with nonequilibrium dynamics taking place on a local rather than a global scale. This means that macroscopic quantum phenomena seem to be practically unattainable for high Jc junctions. We argue that SCDs are an accurate means to measure nonequilibrium effects. This transition from global to local dynamics is of relevance for all kinds of weak links, including the emergent family of nanohybrid Josephson junctions. In superconductor-topological insulator-superconductor hybrid junctions, the barrier edge states are expected to be protected against backscattering, to generate unconventional proximity effects, and, possibly, to signal the presence of Majorana fermions. The standards of proximity modes for these types of structures have to be settled for a neat identification of possible new entities. Through a systematic and complete set of measurements of the Josephson properties we find evidence of ballistic transport in coplanar Al-Bi2Se3-Al junctions that we attribute to a coherent transport through the topological edge state. The shunting effect of the bulk only influences the normal transport. This behavior, which can be considered to some extent universal, is fairly independent of the specific features of superconducting electrodes. A comparative study of Shubnikov - de Haas oscillations and Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy gave an experimental signature compatible with a two dimensional electron transport channel with a Dirac dispersion relation. A reduction of the size of the Bi2Se3 flakes to the nanoscale is an unavoidable step to drive Josephson junctions in the proper regime to detect possible distinctive features of Majorana fermions., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures

Computational kernel of the three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3D-Var) problem is a linear system, generally solved by means of an iterative method. The most costly part of each iterative step is a matrix-vector product with a very large covariance matrix having Gaussian correlation structure. This operation may be interpreted as a Gaussian convolution, that is a very expensive numerical kernel. Recursive Filters (RFs) are a well known way to approximate the Gaussian convolution and are intensively applied in the meteorology, in the oceanography and in forecast models. In this paper, we deal with an oceanographic 3D-Var data assimilation scheme, named OceanVar, where the linear system is solved by using the Conjugate Gradient (GC) method by replacing, at each step, the Gaussian convolution with RFs. Here we give theoretical issues on the discrete convolution approximation with a first order (1st-RF) and a third order (3rd-RF) recursive filters. Numerical experiments confirm given error bounds and show the benefits, in terms of accuracy and performance, of the 3-rd RF., Comment: 9 pages

Dissipation encodes interaction of a quantum system with the environment and regulates the activation regimes of a Brownian particle. We have engineered grain boundary biepitaxial YBaCuO junctions to drive a direct transition from quantum activated running state to phase diffusion regime. The cross-over to the quantum regime is tuned by the magnetic field and dissipation is encoded in a fully consistent set of junction parameters. To unravel phase dynamics in moderately damped systems is of general interest for advances in the comprehension of retrapping phenomena and in view of quantum hybrid technology.

We analyze the linear stability of a stalled accretion shock in a perfect gas with a parametrized cooling function L ~ rho^{beta-alpha} P^alpha. The instability is dominated by the l=1 mode if the shock radius exceeds 2-3 times the accretor radius, depending on the parameters of the cooling function. The growth rate and oscillation period are comparable to those observed in the numerical simulations of Blondin & Mezzacappa (2006). The instability mechanism is analyzed by separately measuring the efficiencies of the purely acoustic cycle and the advective-acoustic cycle. These efficiencies are estimated directly from the eigenspectrum, and also through a WKB analysis in the high frequency limit. Both methods prove that the advective-acoustic cycle is unstable, and that the purely acoustic cycle is stable. Extrapolating these results to low frequency leads us to interpret the dominant mode as an advective-acoustic instability, different from the purely acoustic interpretation of Blondin & Mezzacappa (2006). A simplified characterization of the instability is proposed, based on an advective-acoustic cycle between the shock and the radius r_nabla where the velocity gradients of the stationary flow are strongest. The importance of the coupling region in this mechanism calls for a better understanding of the conditions for an efficient advective-acoustic coupling in a decelerated, nonadiabatic flow, in order to extend these results to core-collapse supernovae., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures, to appear in ApJ (1 new Section, 2 new Figures)

The puzzle of birth velocities of pulsars (pulsar kicks) could be solved by an asymmetric explosion of type II Supernovae. We propose a simple hydrodynamical mechanism in order to explain this asymmetry, through the advective-acoustic cycle (Foglizzo 2002) : during the phase of stalled shock, an instability based on the cycle between advected perturbations (entropy / vorticity) and acoustic perturbations can develop between the shock and the surface of the nascent neutron star. Eigenfrequencies are computed numerically, improving the calculation of Houck & Chevalier (1992). The linear instability is dominated by a mode l=1, as observed in the numerical simulations of Blondin et al. (2003) and Scheck et al. (2004). The instability of Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion, observed in numerical simulations, is analyzed through known physical mechanisms and possible numerical artefacts. The mechanisms of the longitudinal and transverse instabilities, established within the accretion line model, are clarified. They cannot account for the instability of BHL accretion at moderate Mach number when the pressure forces within the shock cone are taken into account. The advective-acoustic instability is considered in the context of BHL accretion when the shock is detached from the accretor. This mechanism naturally explains the stability of the flow when the shock is weak, and the instability when the accretor is small. In particular, it is a robust proof of the instability of 3D accretion when gamma=5/3 if the accretor is small enough, even for moderate shock strength (M sim 3). The numerical artefacts that may be present in existing numerical simulations are reviewed, with particular attention paid to the advection of entropy/vorticity perturbations and the artificial acoustic feedback from the accretor boundary condition. The linear stability of stalled accretion shocks is investigated in the context of core collapse of type II supernovae. We focus on a particular instability mechanism based on the coupling of acoustic perturbations with advected ones (vorticity, entropy). This advective-acoustic cycle takes place between the shock and the nascent neutron star. Both adiabatic and non-adiabatic processes may contribute to this coupling, but only adiabatic ones are considered in this first approach. The growth time of the adiabatic instability scales like the advection time, and is dominated by low degree modes l=0,1,2. Non radial modes (l=1,2) found unstable by Blondin et al. Spectrophotometric indices for $18$ Galactic globular clusters, obtained from CCD observations and careful reductions, were used to determine reliable calibrations on metallicity $[Fe/H]$. The indices were measured in the bandpasses adopted by Burnstein et al. (\cite{BFGK84}). Adding other observations of Burnstein et al. (\cite{BFGK84}) we obtained our results from an homogeneous sample of indices for $26$ globular clusters. Relations with indices defined by other Authors and with metallicity photometric indices or parameters were also computed. In each case the relations are quite satisfactory. Observational data were compared with synthetic indices derived from Buzzoni's (\cite{B89}) models and detailed discussions were performed for $Mg_2$, $Fe_{52}$, and $H_\beta$. The observational points seem to be systematically shifted with respect to the fiducial lines traced by the models. The scenario confirms that a certain degree of oxygen enhancement would be necessary to obtain a better agreement between observed data and theoretical predictions. This enhancement, however, removes some of the disagreement, but not all of it. The dependence of the observed $Fe_{52}$ and $H_\beta$ indices on the metal content for different HB morphologies was considered. Finally, some results were also discussed from a statistical point of view. A principal component analysis was applied to the index sample to study the number of independent parameters necessary to reproduce the observations. This article focuses on dual-language children's books and their role as multicultural documents which establish a fruitful dialogic relationship between the cultural identities they represent. By means of a theoretic framework based on Translation Studies, and of a descriptive approach, the analytical part of the article takes into account the main characteristics of a text corpus selected from three different collections by Sinnos, one of the most important Italian publishing houses specializing in multicultural books.
