A liquid drop containing a long fiber is a complex system whose configuration is determined by an interplay of elastic stresses in the fiber and capillary forces due to the liquid. We study the morphological evolution of fibers that are much longer than the drop diameter in evaporating sessile drops. After insertion, the fibers are either found in an ordered or disordered state, with increasing disorder for increasing fiber length. Upon evaporation, the order increases, in such a way that the final configuration deposited on the solid surface is either a circle, an ellipse, or 8-shaped. The morphology of the deposit depends on the fiber length and the elastocapillary length, both non-dimensionalized with the characteristic drop size, which we classify in a morphology regime map. The disorder-to-order transition allows depositing ordered fiber structures on solid surfaces even in cases of a strongly disordered state after fiber insertion. Combined with technologies such as inkjet printing, this process could open new avenues to decorate surfaces with filamental structures whose morphology can be controlled by varying the fiber length.

To characterize the absorption properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its relation to the LG we present the so-far largest survey of metal absorption in Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra of extragalactic background sources. The UV data are obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and are supplemented by 21 cm radio observations of neutral hydrogen. Along 270 sightlines we measure metal absorption in the lines of SiII, SiIII, CII, and CIV and associated HI 21 cm emission in HVCs in the velocity range |v_LSR|=100-500 km s^-1. With this unprecedented large HVC sample we were able to improve the statistics on HVC covering fractions, ionization conditions, small-scale structure, CGM mass, and inflow rate. For the first time, we determine robustly the angular two point correlation function of the high-velocity absorbers, systematically analyze antipodal sightlines on the celestial sphere, and compare the absorption characteristics with that of Damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) and constrained cosmological simulations of the LG. Our study demonstrates that the Milky Way CGM contains sufficient gaseous material to maintain the Galactic star-formation rate at its current level. We show that the CGM is composed of discrete gaseous structures that exhibit a large-scale kinematics together with small-scale variations in physical conditions. The Magellanic Stream clearly dominates both the cross section and mass flow of high-velocity gas in the Milky Way's CGM. We have obtained IRTF/SpeX spectra of eight moderate-redshift (z=0.7-2.4), radio-selected (log R*~0.4-1.9) broad absorption line (BAL) quasars. The spectra cover the rest-frame optical band. We compare the optical properties of these quasars to those of canonically radio-quiet (log R*<1) BAL quasars at similar redshifts and to low-redshift quasars from the Palomar-Green catalog. As with previous studies of BAL quasars, we find that [OIII] 5007 is weak, and optical FeII emission is strong, a rare combination in canonically radio-loud (log R*>1) quasars. With our measurements of the optical properties, particularly the Balmer emission line widths and the continuum luminosity, we have used empirical scaling relations to estimate black hole masses and Eddington ratios. These lie in the range (0.4-2.6)x10^9 M_sun and 0.1-0.9, respectively. Despite their comparatively extreme radio properties relative to most BAL quasars, their optical properties are quite consistent with those of radio-quiet BAL quasars and dissimilar to those of radio-loud non-BAL quasars. We present images of 29 post-starburst quasars (PSQs) from a Hubble Space Telescope (\emph{HST}) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel Snapshot program. These broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGN) possess the spectral signatures of massive ($M_{burst} \sim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$), moderate-aged stellar populations (hundreds of Myrs). Thus, their composite nature provides insight into the AGN-starburst connection. We measure quasar-to-host galaxy light contributions via semi-automated two-dimensional light profile fits of PSF-subtracted images. We examine the host morphologies, as well as, model the separate bulge and disk components. The \emph{HST}/ACS-F606W images reveal an equal number of spiral (13/29) and early-type (13/29) hosts, with the remaining three hosts having indeterminate classifications. AGNs hosted by early-type galaxies have on average greater luminosity than those hosted by spiral galaxies. Disturbances, such as tidal tails, shells, star-forming knots, and asymmetries are seen as signposts of interaction/merger activity. Disturbances such as these were found in 17 of the 29 objects and are evenly distributed among early-type and spiral galaxies. Two of these systems are clearly merging with their companions. Compared to other AGN of similar luminosity and redshift these PSQs have a higher fraction of early-type hosts and disturbances. Our most luminous objects with disturbed early-type host galaxies appear to be consistent with merger products. Thus, these luminous disturbed galaxies may represent a phase in an evolutionary scenario for merger driven activity and of hierarchical galaxy evolution. Our less luminous objects appear to be consistent with Seyfert galaxies not requiring triggering by major mergers. Many of these Seyferts are barred spiral galaxies.

The current paradigm for the AGN phenomenon is a central engine that consists of an inflow of material accreting in the form of a disk onto a supermassive black hole. Observations in the UV and optical find high velocity ionized material outflowing from the black hole. We present results from Suzaku and XMM-Newton observations of a sample of intrinsic NAL quasars with high velocity outflows. Our derived values of the intrinsic column densities of the X-ray absorbers are consistent with an outflow scenario in which NAL quasars are viewed at smaller inclination angles than BAL quasars. We find that the distributions of alpha_ox and Dalpha_ox of the NAL quasars of our sample differ significantly from those of BAL quasars and SDSS radio-quiet quasars. The NAL quasars are not significantly absorbed in the X-ray band and the positive values of Dalpha_ox suggest absorption in the UV band. The positive values of Dalpha_ox of the intrinsic NAL quasars can be explained in a geometric scenario where our lines of sight towards the compact X-ray hot coronae of NAL quasars do not traverse the absorbing wind whereas lines of sight towards their UV emitting accretion disks do intercept the outflowing absorbers., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted in New Astronomy Reviews

We use Keck/HIRES spectra of 37 optically bright quasars at z=2-4 to study narrow absorption lines that are intrinsic to the quasars (intrinsic NALs, produced in gas that is physically associated with the quasar central engine). We identify 150 NAL systems, that contain 124 C IV, 12 N V, and 50 Si IV doublets, of which 18 are associated systems (within 5,000 km/s of the quasar redshift). We use partial coverage analysis to separate intrinsic NALs from NALs produced in cosmologically intervening structures. We find 39 candidate intrinsic systems, (28 reliable determinations and 11 that are possibly intrinsic). We estimate that 10-17% of C IV systems at blueshifts of 5,000-70,000 km/s relative to quasars are intrinsic. At least 32% of quasars contain one or more intrinsic C IV NALs. Considering N V and Si IV doublets showing partial coverage as well, at least 50% of quasars host intrinsic NALs. This result constrains the solid angle subtended by the absorbers to the background source(s). We identify two families of intrinsic NAL systems, those with strong N V absorption, and those with negligible absorption in N V, but with partial coverage in the C IV doublet. We discuss the idea that these two families represent different regions or conditions in accretion disk winds. Of the 26 intrinsic C IV NAL systems, 13 have detectable low-ionization absorption lines at similar velocities, suggesting that these are two-phase structures in the wind rather than absorbers in the host galaxy. We present statistical and monitoring results of narrow absorption lines that are physically related to quasars (i.e., intrinsic NALs). We use Keck/HIRES spectra of 37 optically bright quasars at z=2-4, and identify 150 NAL systems that contain 124 C IV, 12 N V, and 50 Si IV doublets. Among them, 39 are classified as intrinsic systems based on partial coverage analysis. At least 50% of quasars host intrinsic NALs. We identify two families of intrinsic systems based on their ionization state. Some intrinsic systems have detectable low-ionization NALs at similar velocities as higher-ionization NALs, although such low-ionization lines are rare in broad absorption line (BAL) systems. We also have observed an optically bright quasar, HS1603+3820, eight times with Subaru/HDS and HET/MRS over an interval of 4.2 years (1.2 years in the quasar rest frame), for the purpose of monitoring a variable C IV mini-BAL system. We find that all the troughs of the system vary in concert. However, no other correlations are seen between the variations of different profile parameters. We propose that the observed variations are either (i) a result of rapid continuum fluctuations, caused by a clumpy screen of variable optical depth located between the continuum source and the mini-BAL gas, or (ii) a result of variable scattering of continuum photons around the absorber., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures; Conference proceedings to appear in "The Central Engine of Active Galactic Nuclei", ed. We present the results of a search for variability in the equivalent widths (EWs) of narrow, associated (Delta v < 5,000 km/s) absorption lines found in the UV spectra of z < 1.5 quasars. The goal of this search was to use variability as a means of identifying absorption lines arising in gas that is intrinsic to the quasar central engine. We have compared archival HST/FOS spectra of quasars with recent spectra obtained as part of our own snapshot survey of the same objects with STIS. The intervals between observations are 4-10 years. We primarily focused on the C IV absorption lines, although we also studied other lines available in the same spectra (e.g., Ly-alpha, N V, O VI). Our main result is that 4 out of 15 quasars, or 4 out of 19 associated absorption systems, contained variable narrow absorption lines, which are indicative of intrinsic absorption. We conclude that a minimum of 21% of the associated absorption-line systems are variable. Because not all systems will have necessarily varied, this is a lower limit on this fraction and it is consistent with previous estimates based on variability, partial coverage analysis, or statistical arguments. If we interpret the upper limits on the variability time scale as upper limits on the recombination time of the absorber, we constrain the density of the absorber to be n_e > 3000 cm^{-3} and its distance from the ionizing source to be R < 100pc. Moreover, we are now able to pick out specific intrinsic absorption-line systems to be followed up with high-dispersion spectroscopy in order to constrain the geometry, location, and physical conditions of the absorber. The 3C 273 and RX J1230.8+0115 sightlines probe the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster at physical separations between the sightlines of 200-500 h_70 kpc. We present an analysis of HST STIS echelle and FUSE UV spectroscopy of RX J1230.8+0115 in which we detect five Lyman-alpha absorbers at Virgo distances. One of these absorbers is a blend of two strong metal line absorbers coincident in velocity with the highest neutral hydrogen column density absorber in the 3C 273 sightline ~350 h_70 kpc away. The consistency of the metal line column density ratios in the RX J1230.8+0115 sightline allows us to determine the ionization mechanism (photoionization) for these absorbers. While the low signal-to-noise ratio of the FUSE spectrum limits our ability to model the neutral hydrogen column density of these absorbers, we are able to constrain them to be in the range 10^{16-17} cm^-2. The properties of these absorbers are similar to those of the 3C 273 absorber studied by Tripp et al. However, the inferred line-of-sight size for the 3C 273 absorber is only 70 pc, much smaller than those inferred in RX J1230.8+0115, which are 10-30 h_70 kpc. The small sizes of all three absorbers are at odds with the >~350 h_70 kpc minimum transverse size implied by an application of the standard QSO line pairs analysis. On the basis of absorber associations between these two sight lines we conclude that a large-scale structure filament produces a correlated, not contiguous, gaseous structure in this region of the Virgo Supercluster. These data may indicate that we are detecting overdensities in the large scale structure filaments in this region. Alternatively, the presence of a galaxy 71 h_70 kpc from a 3C 273 absorber may indicate that we have probed outflowing, starburst driven shells of gas associated with nearby galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, accepted ApJ
