Spin polarization in chiral molecules is a magnetic molecular response associated with electron transport and enantioselective bond polarization that occurs even in the absence of an external magnetic field. An unexpected finding by Santos and co-workers reported enantiospecific NMR responses in solid-state cross-polarization (CP) experiments, suggesting a possible additional contribution to the indirect nuclear spin-spin coupling in chiral molecules induced by bond polarization in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. Herein we provide a theoretical treatment for this phenomenon, presenting an effective spin-Hamiltonian for helical molecules like DNA and density functional theory (DFT) results on amino acids that confirm the dependence of J-couplings on the choice of enantiomer. The connection between nuclear spin dynamics and chirality could offer insights for molecular sensing and quantum information sciences. Helium implantation in epitaxial thin films is a way to control the out-of-plane deformation independently from the in-plane strain controlled by epitaxy. In particular, implantation by means of a helium microscope allows for local implantation and patterning down to the nanometer resolution, which is of interest for device applications. We present here a study of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) films where strain was patterned locally by helium implantation. Our combined Raman, XRD and TEM study shows that the implantation causes an elongation of the BiFeO3 unit cell and ultimately a transition towards the so-called super-tetragonal polymorph via states with mixed phases. In addition, TEM reveals the onset of amorphization at a threshold dose that does not seem to impede the overall increase in tetragonality. The phase transition from the R-like to T-like BiFeO3 appears as first-order in character, with regions of phase coexistence and abrupt changes in lattice parameters.

While ferromagnets are at the heart of daily life applications, their large magnetization and resulting energy cost for switching bring into question their suitability for reliable low-power spintronic devices. Non-collinear antiferromagnetic systems do not suffer from this problem and often possess remarkable extra functionalities: non-collinear spin order may break space-inversion symmetry and thus allow electric-field control of magnetism, or produce emergent spin-orbit effects, which enable efficient spin-charge interconversion. To harness these unique traits for next-generation spintronics, the nanoscale control and imaging capabilities that are now routine for ferromagnets must be developed for antiferromagnetic systems. Here, using a non-invasive scanning nanomagnetometer based on a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond, we demonstrate the first real-space visualization of non-collinear antiferromagnetic order in a magnetic thin film, at room temperature. We image the spin cycloid of a multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ thin film and extract a period of $\sim70$ nm, consistent with values determined by macroscopic diffraction. In addition, we take advantage of the magnetoelectric coupling present in BiFeO$_3$ to manipulate the cycloid propagation direction by an electric field. Besides highlighting the unique potential of NV magnetometry for imaging complex antiferromagnetic orders at the nanoscale, these results demonstrate how BiFeO$_3$ can be used as a versatile platform for the design of reconfigurable nanoscale spin textures.

We report a procedure to design 2-dimensional acoustic structures with prescribed scattering properties. The structures are designed from targeted properties in the reciprocal space so that their structure factors, i.e., their scattering patterns under the Born approximation, exactly follow the desired scattering properties for a set of wavelengths. The structures are made of a distribution of rigid circular cross-sectional cylinders embedded in air. We demonstrate the efficiency of the procedure by designing 2-dimensional stealth acoustic materials with broadband backscattering suppression independent of the angle of incidence and equiluminous acoustic materials exhibiting broadband scattering of equal intensity also independent of the angle of incidence. The scattering intensities are described in terms of both single and multiple scattering formalisms, showing excellent agreement with each other, thus validating the scattering properties of each material.

Mirror-symmetric acoustic metascreens producing perfect absorption independently of the incidence side are theoretically and experimentally reported in this work. The mirror-symmetric resonant building blocks of the metascreen support symmetric and antisymmetric resonances that can be tuned to be at the same frequency (degenerate resonances). The geometry of the building blocks is optimized to critically couple both the symmetric and the antisymmetric resonances at the same frequency allowing perfect absorption of sound from both sides of the metascreen. A hybrid analytical model based on the transfer matrix method and the modal decomposition of the exterior acoustic field is developed to analyze the scattering properties of the metascreen. The resulting geometry is 3D printed and experimentally tested in an impedance tube. Experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions proving the efficiency of these metascreens for the perfect absorption of sound in the ventilation problems.

Antiferromagnetic thin films are currently generating considerable excitement for low dissipation magnonics and spintronics. However, while tuneable antiferromagnetic textures form the backbone of functional devices, they are virtually unknown at the submicron scale. Here we image a wide variety of antiferromagnetic spin textures in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films that can be tuned by strain and manipulated by electric fields through room temperature magnetoelectric coupling. Using piezoresponse force microscopy and scanning NV magnetometry in self-organized ferroelectric patterns of BiFeO3, we reveal how strain stabilizes different types of non-collinear antiferromagnetic states (bulk-like and exotic spin cycloids) as well as collinear antiferromagnetic textures. Beyond these local-scale observations, resonant elastic X-ray scattering confirms the existence of both types of spin cycloids. Finally, we show that electric-field control of the ferroelectric landscape induces transitions either between collinear and non-collinear states or between different cycloids, offering perspectives for the design of reconfigurable antiferromagnetic spin textures on demand.

We report the experimental design of a 1D stealth acoustic material, namely a material that suppresses the acoustic scattering for a given set of incident wave vectors. The material consists of multiple scatterers, rigid diaphragms, located in an air-filled acoustic waveguide. The position of the scatterers has been chosen such that in the Born approximation a suppression of the scattering for a broad range of frequencies is achieved and thus a broadband transparency. Experimental results are found in excellent agreement with the theory despite the presence of losses and the finite size of the material, features that are not captured in the theory. This robustness as well as the generality of the results motivates realistic potential applications for the design of transparent materials in acoustics and other fields of wave physics.

The limits of flexural wave absorption by open lossy resonators are analytically and numerically reported in this work for both the reflection and transmission problems. An experimental validation for the reflection problem is presented. The reflection and transmission of flexural waves in 1D resonant thin beams are analyzed by means of the transfer matrix method. The hypotheses, on which the analytical model relies, are validated by experimental results. The open lossy resonator, consisting of a finite length beam thinner than the main beam, presents both energy leakage due to the aperture of the resonators to the main beam and inherent losses due to the viscoelastic damping. Wave absorption is found to be limited by the balance between the energy leakage and the inherent losses of the open lossy resonator. The perfect compensation of these two elements is known as the critical coupling condition and can be easily tuned by the geometry of the resonator. On the one hand, the scattering in the reflection problem is represented by the reflection coefficient. A single symmetry of the resonance is used to obtain the critical coupling condition. Therefore the perfect absorption can be obtained in this case. On the other hand, the transmission problem is represented by two eigenvalues of the scattering matrix, representing the symmetric and anti-symmetric parts of the full scattering problem. In the geometry analyzed in this work, only one kind of symmetry can be critically coupled, and therefore, the maximal absorption in the transmission problem is limited to 0.5. The results shown in this work pave the way to the design of resonators for efficient flexural wave absorption.

Magnetic refrigeration based on the magnetocaloric effect at room temperature is one of the most attractive alternative to the current gas compression/expansion method routinely employed. Nevertheless, in giant magnetocaloric materials, optimal refrigeration is restricted to the narrow temperature window of the phase transition (Tc). In this work, we present the possibility of varying this transition temperature into a same giant magnetocaloric material by ion irradiation. We demonstrate that the transition temperature of iron rhodium thin films can be tuned by the bombardment of ions of Ne 5+ with varying fluences up to 10 14 ions cm --2 , leading to optimal refrigeration over a large 270--380 K temperature window. The Tc modification is found to be due to the ion-induced disorder and to the density of new point-like defects. The variation of the phase transition temperature with the number of incident ions opens new perspectives in the conception of devices using giant magnetocaloric materials.

The electric field control of functional properties is a crucial goal in oxide-based electronics. Non-volatile switching between different resistivity or magnetic states in an oxide channel can be achieved through charge accumulation or depletion from an adjacent ferroelectric. However, the way in which charge distributes near the interface between the ferroelectric and the oxide remains poorly known, which limits our understanding of such switching effects. Here we use a first-of-a-kind combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectroscopy, near-total-reflection hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, and ab-initio theory to address this issue. We achieve a direct, quantitative, atomic-scale characterization of the polarization-induced charge density changes at the interface between the ferroelectric BiFeO3 and the doped Mott insulator Ca1-xCexMnO3, thus providing insight on how interface-engineering can enhance these switching effects., Comment: Work supported by ERC Consolidator grant MINT (Contract No. 615759)

The control of optical fields is usually achieved through the electro-optic or acousto-optic effect in single-crystal ferroelectric or polar compounds such as LiNbO3 or quartz. In recent years, tremendous progress has been made in ferroelectric oxide thin film technology - a field which is now a strong driving force in areas such as electronics, spintronics and photovoltaics. Here, we apply epitaxial strain engineering to tune the optical response of BiFeO3 thin films, and find a very large variation of the optical index with strain, corresponding to an effective elasto-optic coefficient larger than that of quartz. We observe a concomitant strain-driven variation in light absorption - reminiscent of piezochromism - which we show can be manipulated by an electric field. This constitutes an electrochromic effect that is reversible, remanent and not driven by defects. These findings broaden the potential of multiferroics towards photonics and thin film acousto-optic devices, and suggest exciting device opportunities arising from the coupling of ferroic, piezoelectric and optical responses., Comment: Work supported by ERC Consolidator grant MINT (Contract No. 615759)

In all-oxide ferroelectric (FE) - superconductor (S) bilayers, due to the low carrier concentration of oxides compared to transition metals, the FE interfacial polarization charges induce an accumulation (or depletion) of charge carriers in the S. This leads either to an enhancement or a depression of its critical temperature depending on FE polarization direction.Here we exploit this effect at a local scale to define planar weak-links in high-temperature superconducting wires. This is realized in BiFeO3(FE)/YBa2Cu3O7(S)bilayers in which the remnant FE domain structure is written at will by locally applying voltage pulses with a conductive-tip atomic force microscope. In this fashion, the FE domain pattern defines a spatial modulation of superconductivity. This allows us to write a device whose electrical transport shows different temperature regimes and magnetic field matching effects that are characteristic of Josephson coupled weak-links. This illustrates the potential of the ferroelectric approach for the realization of high-temperature superconducting devices.

The XAFS beamline at Elettra Synchrotron in Trieste combines X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to provide chemically specific structural information of materials. It operates in the energy range 2.4-27 keV by using a silicon double reflection Bragg monochromator. The fluorescence measurement is performed in place of the absorption spectroscopy when the sample transparency is too low for transmission measurements or the element to study is too diluted in the sample. We report on the development and on the preliminary tests of a new prototype detector based on Silicon Drift Detectors technology and the SIRIO ultra low noise front-end ASIC. The new system will be able to reduce drastically the time needed to perform fluorescence measurements, while keeping a short dead time and maintaining an adequate energy resolution to perform spectroscopy. We experimentally report perfect acoustic absorption through the interplay of the inherent losses and transparent modes with high $Q$ factor. These modes are generated in a two-port, one-dimensional waveguide which is side-loaded by isolated resonators of moderate $Q$ factor. In symmetric structures, we show that in the presence of small inherent losses, these modes lead to coherent perfect absorption associated with one-sided absorption slightly larger than 0.5. In asymmetric structures, near perfect one-sided absorption is possible (96 \%) with a deep sub-wavelength sample ($\lambda/28$). The control of strong absorption by the proper tuning of few resonators with weak losses will open new possibilities in various wave-control devices.

We experimentally and analytically report broadband and narrowband perfect absorption in two different acoustic waveguide-resonator geometries by the mechanism of critical coupling. In the first geometry the resonator (a Helmholtz resonator) is side-loaded to the waveguide and it has a moderate quality factor. In the second geometry the resonator (a viscoelastic porous plate) is in-line loaded and it contains two resonant modes with low quality factor. The interplay between the energy leakage of the resonant modes into the waveguide and the inherent losses of the system reveals a perfect and a broadband nearly perfect absorption. The results shown in this work can motivate relevant research for the design of broadband perfect absorbers in other domains of wave physics.

This work proposes a different procedure to encrypt images of 256 grey levels and colour, using the symmetric system Advanced Encryption Standard with a variable permutation in the first round, after the x-or operation. Variable permutation means using a different one for each input block of 128 bits. In this vein, an algorithm is constructed that defines a Bijective function between sets Nm = {n in N, 0 <= n < fac(m)} with n >= 2 and Pm = {pi, pi is a permutation of 0, 1, ..., m-1}. This algorithm calculates permutations on 128 positions with 127 known constants. The transcendental numbers are used to select the 127 constants in a pseudo-random way. The proposed encryption quality is evaluated by the following criteria: Correlation; horizontal, vertical and diagonal, Entropy and Discrete Fourier Transform. The latter uses the NIST standard 800-22. Also, a sensitivity analysis was performed in encrypted figures. Furthermore, an additional test is proposed which considers the distribution of 256 shades of the three colours; red, green and blue for colour images. On the other hand, it is important to mention that the images are encrypted without loss of information because many banking companies and some safety area countries do not allow the figures to go through a compression process with information loss. i.e., it is forbidden to use formats such as JPEG., Comment: 13 pages

In tunnel junctions with ferroelectric barriers, switching the polarization direction modifies the electrostatic potential profile and the associated average tunnel barrier height. This results in strong changes of the tunnel transmission and associated resistance. The information readout in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) is thus resistive and non-destructive, which is an advantage compared to the case of conventional ferroelectric memories (FeRAMs). Initially, endurance limitation (i.e. fatigue) was the main factor hampering the industrialization of FeRAMs. Systematic investigations of switching dynamics for various ferroelectric and electrode materials have resolved this issue, with endurance now reaching $10^{14}$ cycles. Here we investigate data retention and endurance in fully patterned submicron Co/BiFeO$_3$/Ca$_{0.96}$Ce$_{0.04}$MnO$_3$ FTJs. We report good reproducibility with high resistance contrasts and extend the maximum reported endurance of FTJs by three orders of magnitude ($4\times10^6$ cycles). Our results indicate that here fatigue is not limited by a decrease of the polarization or an increase of the leakage but rather by domain wall pinning. We propose directions to access extreme and intermediate resistance states more reliably and further strengthen the potential of FTJs for non-volatile memory applications.

We report Bessel-like beam formation of acoustic waves by means of an axisymmetric grating of rigid tori. The results show that the generated beam pattern is similar to that of Bessel beams, characterized by elongated non-diffracting focal spots. A multiple foci structure is observed, due to the finite size of the lens. The dependence of the focal distance on the frequency is also discussed, on the basis of an extended grating theory. Experimental validation of acoustic Bessel-like beam formation is also reported for sound waves. The results can be generalized to wave beams of different nature, as optical or matter waves.

We investigate the sound propagation in an air-filled tube periodically loaded with Helmholtz resonators. By tuning the Helmholtz with the Bragg resonance, we study the efficiency of slow sound propagation in the presence of the intrinsic viscothermal losses of the system. While in the lossless case the overlapping of the resonances results in slow sound induced transparency of a narrow frequency band surrounded by a strong and broadband gap, the inclusion of the unavoidable losses imposes limits to the slowdown factor and the maximum transmission. Experiments, theory and finite element simulations have been used for the characterization of acoustic wave propagation. Experiments, in good agreement with the lossy theory, reveal the possibility of slowing sound at low frequencies by 20 times. A trade-off among the relevant parameters (delay time, maximum transmission, bandwidth) as a function of the tuning between Bragg and Helmholtz resonance frequency is also presented.

We present the design of a structured material supporting complete absorption of sound with a broadband response and functional for any direction of incident radiation. The structure which is fabricated out of porous lamellas is arranged into a low-density crystal and backed by a reflecting support. Experimental measurements show that strong all-angle sound absorption with almost zero reflectance takes place for a frequency range exceeding two octaves. We demonstrate that lowering the crystal filling fraction increases the wave interaction time and is responsible for the enhancement of intrinsic material dissipation, making the system more absorptive with less material.

The symmetry matching between the source and the lens results of fundamental interest for lensing applications. In this work we have modeled an axisymmetric gradient index (GRIN) lens made of rigid toroidal scatterers embedded in air considering this symmetry matching with radially symmetric sources. The sound amplification obtained in the focal spot of the reported lens (8.24 dB experimentally) shows the efficiency of the axisymmetric lenses with respect to the previous Cartesian acoustic GRIN lenses. The axisymmetric design opens new possibilities in lensing applications in different branches of science and technology.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel mechanism of sound wave concentration based on soft reflections in chirped sonic crystals. The reported controlled field enhancement occurs at around particular (bright) planes in the crystal, and is related to a progressive slowing down of the sound wave as it propagates along the material. At these bright planes, a substantial concentration of the energy (with a local increase up to 20 times) was obtained for a linear chirp and for frequencies around the first band gap. A simple couple mode theory is proposed, that interprets and estimates the observed effects. The results are obtained for the case of sound waves and sonic crystals, however they are extendable to other type of waves in modulated host matter.

A theoretical and experimental study of the propagation of sound beams in- and behind three-dimensional sonic crystals at frequencies close to the band edges is presented. An efficient collimation of the beam behind the crystal is predicted and experimentally demonstrated. This effect could allow the design of sources of high spatial quality sound beams.

The effect of the presence of a finite impedance surface on the wave propagation properties of a two-dimensional periodic array of rigid cylinders with their axes perpendicular to the surface is both numerically and experimentally analyzed in this work. In this realistic situation both the incident and the scattered waves interact with these two elements, the surface and the array. The interaction between the excess attenuation effect, due to the destructive interference produced by the superposition of the incident wave and the reflected one by the surface, and the bandgap, due to the periodicity of the array, is fundamental for the design of devices to control the transmission of waves based on periodic arrays. The most obvious application is perhaps the design of Sonic Crystals Noise Barriers. Two different finite impedance surfaces have been analyzed in the work in order to observe the dependence of the wave propagation properties on the impedance of the surface.

Complex Band Structures and Multiple Scattering Theory have been used in this paper to analyze the overlapping of the evanescent waves localized in point defects in Sonic Crystals. The Extended Plane Wave Expansion (EPWE) with supercell approximation gives the imaginary part of the Bloch vectors that produces the decay of the localized modes inside the periodic system. Double-cavities can present a coupling between the evanescent modes localized in the defect, showing a symmetric or antisymmetric modes. When point defects are close, the complex band structures reveal a splitting of the frequencies of the localized modes. Both the real part and the imaginary values of wave vector of the localized modes in the cavities present different values for each localized mode, which gives different properties for each mode. Novel measurements, in very good agreement with analytical data, show the experimental evidences of the symmetric and antisymmetric localized modes for a double-point defect in Sonic Crystals (SC). The investigation on the localization phenomena and the coupling between defects in periodic systems has a fundamental importance both in pure and in applied physics.

The complex band structures calculated using the Extended Plane Wave Expansion (EPWE) reveal the presence of evanescent modes in periodic systems, never predicted by the classical \omega(\vec{k}) methods, providing novel interpretations of several phenomena as well as a complete picture of the system. In this work we theoretically and experimentally observe that in the ranges of frequencies where a deaf band is traditionally predicted, an evanescent mode with the excitable symmetry appears changing drastically the interpretation of the transmission properties. On the other hand, the simplicity of the sonic crystals in which only the longitudinal polarization can be excited, is used to interpret, without loss of generality, the level repulsion between symmetric and antisymmetric bands in sonic crystals as the presence of an evanescent mode connecting both repelled bands. These evanescent modes, obtained using EPWE, explain both the attenuation produced in this range of frequencies and the transfer of symmetry from one band to the other in good agreement with both experimental results and multiple scattering predictions. Thus, the evanescent properties of the periodic system have been revealed necessary for the design of new acoustic and electromagnetic applications based on periodicity.

This work theoretically and experimentally reports the evanescent connections between propagating bands in periodic acoustic materials. The complex band structures obtained by solving for the $k(\omega)$ problem reveal a complete interpretation of the propagation properties of these systems. The prediction of evanescent modes, non predicted by classical $\omega(\vec{k})$ methods, is of interest for the understanding of these propagation properties. Complex band structures provide an interpretation of the evanescent coupling and the level repulsion states showing the possibility to control of evanescent waves in periodic materials.

An acoustic metamaterial made of a two-dimensional (2D) periodic array of multi-resonant acoustic scatterers is analysed in this paper. The building blocks consist of a combination of elastic beams of Low-Density Polyethylene Foam (LDPF) with cavities of known volume. Sound inside the structure can excite elastic resonances of the material as well as acoustic resonances in the cavities producing several attenuation peaks in the low-frequency range. Due to this behaviour at the subwavelength regime we can define this periodic array as a Locally Multi-Resonant Acoustic Metamaterial (LMRAM) presenting strong dispersive characteristics of the effective properties with subwavelength multi-resonant structural units. The results shown in this paper could be use to design effective Sonic Crystal Acoustic Barriers with wide tunable attenuation bands in the low-frequency range.

The physical properties of a periodic distribution of absorbent resonators is used in this work to design a tunable wideband bandstop acoustic filter. Analytical and numerical simulations as well as experimental validations show that the control of the resonances and the absorption of the scatterers along with their periodic arrangement in air introduces high technological possibilities to control noise. Sound manipulation is perhaps the most obvious application of the structures presented in this work. We apply this methodology to develop a device as an alternative to the conventional acoustic barriers with several properties from the acoustical point of view but also with additional aesthetic and constructive characteristics.

The use of Sonic Crystals as environmental noise barriers has certain advantages from the acoustical and the constructive point of view with regard to conventional ones. One aspect do not studied yet is the acoustic interaction between the Sonic Crystals and the ground due to, up to now, this latter is not included in the analytical models used to characterize these Sonic Crystals. We present here an analytical model, based on multiple scattering theory, to study this interaction considering the ground as a finite impedance surface. Using this model we have obtained interesting conclusions that allow to design more effectively noise screens based on Sonic Crystals. The obtained results have been compared with experimental and numerical, finding a good agreement between them.

Research into properties of heterogeneous artificial materials, consisting of arrangements of rigid scatterers embedded in a medium with different elastic properties, has been intense throughout last two decades. The capability to prevent the transmission of waves in predetermined bands of frequencies -called bandgaps- becomes one of the most interesting properties of these systems, and leads to the possibility of designing devices to control wave propagation. The underlying physical mechanism is destructive Bragg interference. Here we show a technique that enables the creation of a wide bandgap in these materials, based on fractal geometries. We have focused our work in the acoustic case where these materials are called Phononic/Sonic Crystals (SC) but, the technique could be applied any types of crystals and wave types in ranges of frequencies where the physics of the process is linear.

Evanescent modes in complete sonic crystals (SC) and SC with point defects are reported both theoretically and experimentally in this paper. Plane wave expansion (PWE) and, in general, $\omega(k)$ methods have been used to calculate band structures showing gaps that have been interpreted as ranges of frequencies where no real $k$ exists. In this work, we extend PWE to solve the complex $k(\omega)$ problem applied to SC, introducing the supercell approximation for studying one vacancy. Explicit matrix formulation of the equations is given. This $k(\omega)$ method enables the calculation of complex band structures, as well as enabling an analysis of the propagating modes related with real values of the function $k(\omega)$, and the evanescent modes related with imaginary values of $k(\omega)$. This paper shows theoretical results and experimental evidences of the evanescent behavior of modes inside the SC band gap. Experimental data and numerical results using the finite elements method are in very good agreement with the predictions obtained using the $k(\omega)$ method., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

We show both experimentally and theoretically the evanescent behaviour of modes in the Band Gap (BG) of finite Phononic Crystal (PC). Based on experimental and numerical data we obtain the imaginary part of the wave vector in good agreement with the complex band structures obtained by the Extended Plane Wave Expansion (EPWE). The calculated and measured acoustic field of a localized mode out of the point defect inside the PC presents also evanescent behaviour. The correct understanding of evanescent modes is fundamental for designing narrow filters and wave guides based on Phononic Crystals with defects., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Using a low-temperature conductive-tip atomic force microscope in cross-section geometry we have characterized the local transport properties of the metallic electron gas that forms at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. At low temperature, we find that the carriers do not spread away from the interface but are confined within ~10 nm, just like at room temperature. Simulations taking into account both the large temperature and electric-field dependence of the permittivity of SrTiO3 predict a confinement over a few nm for sheet carrier densities larger than ~6 10^13 cm-2. We discuss the experimental and simulations results in terms of a multi-band carrier system. Remarkably, the Fermi wavelength estimated from Hall measurements is ~16 nm, indicating that the electron gas in on the verge of two-dimensionality., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

The alpha-beta magneto-structural phase transition in MnAs/GaAs(111) epilayers is investigated by elastic neutron scattering. The in-plane parameter of MnAs remains almost constant with temperature from 100 K to 420 K, following the thermal evolution of the GaAs substrate. This induces a temperature dependent biaxial strain that is responsible for an alpha-beta phase coexistence and, more important, for the stabilization of the ferromagnetic alpha-phase at higher temperature than in bulk. We explain the premature appearance of the beta-phase at 275 K and the persistence of the ferromagnetic alpha-phase up to 350 K with thermodynamical arguments based on the MnAs phase diagram. We report on the appearance of magnetic stripes in MnAs/GaAs(100) epilayers at temperatures well below the ferromagnetic transition of the system. The study has been performed by ferromagnetic resonance experiments (FMR) on MnAs epilayers grown on (100) and (111) GaAs substrates. The FMR spectra of the MnAs/GaAs(100) samples at 180 K reveal the appearance of zones of different magnetic behavior with respect to the low-temperature homogeneous ferromagnetic phase. The angular and the temperature dependence of the spectra serve us to detect the inter-growth of the non-magnetic phase into the ferromagnetic phase at a very early stage of the process. The experimental data show that the new phase nucleates in a self-arranged array of stripes in MnAs/GaAs(100) thin films while it grows randomly in the same films grown on GaAs(111)., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The magnetic properties of MnAs epilayers have been investigated for two different substrate orientations: GaAs(100) and GaAs(111). We have analyzed the magnetization reversal under magnetic field at low temperatures, determining the anisotropy of the films. The results, based on the shape of the magnetization loops, suggest a domain movement mechanism for both types of samples. The temperature dependence of the coercivity of the films has been also examined, displaying a generic anomalous reentrant behavior at T$>$200 K. This feature is independent of the substrate orientation and films thickness and may be associated to the appearance of new pinning centers due to the nucleation of the $\beta$-phase at high temperatures., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We study defect modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice with a localized defect within the framework of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is shown that for a significant range of parameters the defect modes can be accurately described by an expansion over Wannier functions, whose envelope is governed by the coupled nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation with a delta-impurity. The stability of the defect modes is verified by direct numerical simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic plus defect potentials. We report on the use of the LaAlO3 (LAO) high-k dielectric as a tunnel barrier in magnetic tunnel junctions. From tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) measurements on epitaxial La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/LAO/La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 junctions, we estimate a spin polarization of 77% at low temperature for the La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/LAO interface. Remarkably, the TMR of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/LAO/Co junctions at low bias is negative, evidencing a negative spin polarization of Co at the interface with LAO, and its bias dependence is very similar to that of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3/STO/Co junctions. We have obtained bulk samples of the graphite intercalation compound, CaC6, by a novel method of synthesis from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. The crystal structure has been completely determined showing that it is the only member of the MC6, metal-graphite compounds, which has rhombohedral symmetry. We study a rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in which an optically induced Josephson coupling allows for population transfer between the two species. In a regime where separation of species is favored, the ground state of the rotating system displays domain walls with velocity fields normal to them. We study the scattering properties of optical dipole-mode vector solitons recently predicted theoretically and generated in a laboratory. We study the generation of vortices in rotating axially elongated magneto-optical traps, a situation which has been realized in a recent experiment (K. W. Madison, F. Chevy, W. Wohlleben, J. Dalibard, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 806 (2000)). We predict that at a critical frequency the condensate experiences a symmetry breaking and changes from a convex cloud to a state with one bended vortex. We also discuss several effects which enlarge the critical frequency with respect to other geometries of the trap: these are, (i) the failure of the Thomas-Fermi approximation on the transverse degrees of freedom of the condensate, (ii) the enhancement of the transverse asymmetry of the trap by means of rotation and (iii) the yet unobserved bending of the vortex lines., Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures; completely revised tex with new figures

We study the rotational properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a rotating harmonic trap for different trap anisotropies. Using simple arguments, we derive expressions for the velocity field of the quantum fluid for condensates with or without vortices. While the condensed gas describes open spiraling trajectories, on the frame of reference of the rotating trap the motion of the fluid is against the trap rotation. We also find explicit formulae for the angular momentum and a linear and Thomas-Fermi solutions for the state without vortices. In these two limits we also find an analytic relation between the shape of the cloud and the rotation speed. In this paper we develop a new approximation method valid for a wide family of nonlinear wave equations of Nonlinear Schr\"odinger type. The result is a reduced set of ordinary differential equations for a finite set of parameters measuring global properties of the solutions, named momenta. We prove that these equations provide exact results in some relevant cases and show how to impose reasonable approximations that can be regarded as a perturbative approach and as an extension of the time dependent variational method., Comment: 4 pages, no figures

We study the stability of vortex-lines in trapped dilute gases subject to rotation. We solve numerically both the Gross-Pitaevskii and the Bogoliubov equations for a 3d condensate in spherically and cilyndrically symmetric stationary traps, from small to very large nonlinearities. In the stationary case it is found that the vortex states with unit and $m=2$ charge are energetically unstable. In the rotating trap it is found that this energetic instability may only be suppressed for the $m=1$ vortex-line, and that the multicharged vortices are never a local minimum of the energy functional, which implies that the absolute minimum of the energy is not an eigenstate of the $L_z$ operator, when the angular speed is above a certain value, $\Omega > \Omega_2$., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures in EPS format
